The last living female passenger pigeon named as Martha died at the Cincinnati zoo in 1914. Martha was the last creature left in its entire generation. The bird had ruled the sky of America for several years since it was once the most common species like wild turkey. The most fascinating thing of this wild blue dove is that it can flock in millions at a time.
People loved to eat and shot them because of which they died more speedily. A number of authors have referred the passenger pigeons in their books and numerous artists have painted them.
Generally, passenger pigeons symbolize the American spirit of struggle and self-determination. Whereas, most of the people consider it as the story of the people that took the land.
The passenger pigeon was quite dissimilar from the city pigeon. They had a blue smooth and shiny body along with wings of blue color. They used to fly together in billions, even if they are migrating from north to south.
Martha and two other dead pigeons will be displayed today at the Smithsonian. It is now centennial celebrations of the dead pigeons due to which the museum exhibited behind a glass wall. Few scientists and researchers are struggling to bring back passenger pigeons to life through experimentation.
