Moto X 2014 is an upgraded edition of the Moto X handset that came out in August 2013. The best thing about Moto X is that each owner of the device can personalize the device before placing an order. The Moto Maker is the feature that that allows you to choose the colors and options which will help in giving a customized appeal to the device.
The original Moto X was born last year when Motorola was taken over by Google. The new Moto X 2014 is one of the ending products from Motorola before it moves over to Lenovo. Here is the detailed review of Moto X 2014:
Design
When it comes to design, the Moto X 2014 surely does well in pleasing the audience. The handset appears slightly curved. The older Moto X came with a plastic body. However, the manufacturers have replaced it with a premium looking metallic frame.
The metal frame looks good but one of the major features of Moto X 2nd gen is that the rear cover can be replaced by custom covers by using the Moto Maker feature. The handset measures 140.8 x 72.4 x 10 mm and weighs 144g.
Below the display of Moto X, you can find a single speaker that produces impressive sound output. The handset is available in black and white colors. The rear panel can be replaced with custom back panels.
Display
Moto X 2014 comes with a 5.2-inch AMOLED screen that is protected by Gorilla Corning Glass 3 protection. Last year’s Moto X came with 4.7-inch display that supported 720p. However, the new Moto X 2014’s display supports full HD display resolution and offers 424 ppi. By this the Moto X slots itself among the likes of LG G3, HTC One M8 and Sony Xperia Z3.
The display is very clear and offers rich colors and the viewing angles are also very good. Under bright sunlight, users will have no problems in reading the contents of the display.
Processor, RAM and Storage
Motorola Moto X 2014 is powered by Snapdragon 801 chipset. It includes a Krait 400 quad-core processor that clocks at 2.5 GHz and Adreno 330 graphics. The handset is equipped with 2GB RAM. The handset may not be high on performance specs but it does manage to support 3D intensive games easily. On the performance front, the Moto X tries its best to be on par with any other popular Android flagship smartphone.
The Moto X 2014 comes in two storage options, namely 16GB and 32GB. Out of the 16GB, Motorola has made 12GB available for users to store their files. One of the downsides of the 2nd gen Moto X is that it does not feature a microSD card slot.
Camera, Connectivity and Sensors
Moto X from 2013 came with 10 megapixel camera. However, Motorola has now upped the number of megapixels on the new Moto X. It comes with a rear camera of 13 megapixels. It can record videos of 2160p and 1080p quality. The front-facing camera of the Moto X is of 2 megapixels. It can also record 1080p videos. The rear camera is enabled with the first ever ring flash which does well in illuminating the subject.
Moto X 2014 comes with numerous connectivity features. It includes Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, aGPS and GLONASS. It includes a host of usual sensors such as accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, compass, and barometer.
Software Features
Moto X is powered with Android v4.4.4 KitKat and it will be one of the first devices to get the yet to arrive Android L OS update. The exclusive Moto features will surely impress the audience. The Moto Assist features allows the handset to show you relevant information depending on the time of the day, whether you are in a meeting or driving your vehicle.
Moto Display is a cool feature that allows you to see up to three notifications on the display on the standby screen. You can view alerts without turning on the display as the screen is equipped with four IR sensors around the display.
The Moto Voice feature allows you to use your Moto X handset without touching the device. In other words, you can use customized voice commands to activate certain features of the device. The Moto Actions lets you use gestures to respond to carry various on the device such as swiping on the display to silence a phone call or flicking the wrist two times would make the handset start the camera app.
Apart from these Moto features, the handset does not include any bloatware. The Moto X 2014 does well in delivering the pure Android experience to the audience. Google Drive is offering 50GB of free cloud storage for Moto X users.
Battery
The Moto X 2014 comes housed with 2300mAh battery. It is a non-removable battery. Last year’s Moto X came with a 2200mAh battery. It takes around 170 minutes to fully charge the battery and is capable of delivering up to 6 hours of talk time on 3G. Motorola claims that the battery of the Moto X can last for 24 hours.
Pricing and Carriers
The Moto X is currently available with two carriers in the US, AT&T and T-Mobile
AT&T Moto X
On contract with AT&T, the Moto X is available with a one time payment of $70. As of now, AT&T Next deals are not available for Moto X 2014. Without contract, the Moto X 2nd gen can be purchased for $545.
T-Mobile Moto X
T-Mobile is selling unlocked Moto X for $350. The T-Mobile Moto X is currently out of stock through the official website of Motorola.
Verizon Moto X
Verizon Moto X can be availed for $50 along with a two-year contract. Without contract, the Verizon powered Moto X is available for $500.
Moto X Developer Edition is only available on Verizon. It can be purchased for $400. With zero down payment, buyers can either choose to pay in six months, twelve months or eighteen months.
