New Algorithm Can Identify Depression in Your Instagram Feed

August 22, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

your Instagram feed could reveal depression

There appears to be a connection between the use of color in an Instagram photo and the mental state of a person.

A new algorithm seems to be 70 percent accurate when determining depression in people who use certain filters in Instagram.

Social media gives us a good insight into people’s life, maybe more than we sometimes want, but now researchers have discovered a machine that checks Instagram photos and can diagnose depression and other mental illnesses.

The new study conducted by Andrew Reece of Harvard University and Chris Danforth of the University of Vermont reveals the fact that there is a strong connection between the usage of color and the mental state of a person.

Any Instagram user will probably know that the photo-feed app provides around 23 different filters that you can apply on top of your photo. Researchers have concluded that the more a person uses one of the filters, the grayscale option called Inkwell, the more depressed they are likely to be.

The study was conducted on around 170 people who were asked to share photos from their Instagram feed and answer several questions from a standard clinical depression survey. After sharing some of their photos they were then asked to rate 100 photos from each person based on how sad, happy or interesting the photos appeared. Moreover, they had to comment on the filters chosen by others and the number of faces in each picture.

The researchers used the photos in a machine-learning algorithm that noticed the correlations between image properties and depression. This algorithm found that decreased saturation and brightness and increased hue predicted depression.

Also, specialists reached the conclusion that people with depression usually have fewer likes on their photos and tend to comment a lot on other people feed.

The findings showed that individuals who used less bright filters or no filters at all were more likely to suffer from depression and the accuracy of this prediction was more than 70 percent. Because of the high prediction, researchers believe that their technique can be used to discover early signs of mental illnesses.

What is certain for now is that an individual’s mental state is transmitted to social media and by using computational methods the elements expressed through photos can be easily identified.

Life Saving Epipens Are Becoming Too Expensive

August 17, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

EpiPens can be purchased in packs of two

EpiPens are a vital part of families that have children with food allergies

The life-saving Epinephrine-dispensing EpiPens are a vital part of families that have children with food allergies. In the case of a severe reaction, people rely on them for a dose of the medicine that could save their life.

An epinephrine autoinjector is a medical device for injecting a measured dose or doses of epinephrine also known as adrenaline, by means of auto-injector technology. The devices contain a spring-loaded needle that exits the tip of the device (in some cases through a sterile membrane) and penetrates the recipient’s skin, to deliver the medication via intramuscular injection.

Nearly one out of every thirteen children has a food allergy and only last year, about 3.6 million prescriptions were written for EpiPens. They expire each year and need to be replaced.

In the last nine years, after Mylan bought the rights for EpiPen, the price for this life-saving device increased by over 450 percent, from $50 for one injector to $600 for a pack of two, leaving the dose out of reach for many families.

The device can be purchased in packs of two at FDA’s recommendation that people suffering from allergies must carry two doses just in case. However, selling them in packs of two could also mean that if one is lost, to replace it, people must double the cost by buying an extra.

For people with no insurance, this total cost of $600 must be borne out of pocket. Moreover, other insurance plans reduce the cost of the medicine but still leaves the patients to pay several hundred dollars for it.

While the price of the actual medicine is just a few dollars, Mylan — the manufacturer of EpiPen—enjoys having just a few competitors in the field.

Over the last seven years, there has been reported a 67 percent increase in the number of people using EpiPens making it the main source of income for Mylan.

The spectacular increase of the EpiPens’s price has led to families resorting to syringes filled with epinephrine as a cheaper alternative. Although it is cheaper, it also could be fatal if a vein is injected instead of a muscle.

Depending on their medical insurance plans, Mylan is offering clients coupons worth up to $100 that will allow a number of users to pay less than the asking price.

105 Years-Old Killer Whale Seen in the Pacific

August 8, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

killer whale seen in the Pacific

A killer whale which is presumably as old as the Titanic has been spotted last week

According to the nonprofit organization Orca Network, a killer whale which is presumably as old as the Titanic has been spotted last week off the coast of Washington state.

The killer whale which is known by the scientists as J12 but nicknamed Granny is considered to be 105 years old and has been photographed while swimming and jumping with other orcas.

Granny, which according to a news station was alive one year before the Titanic took its trip across the Atlantic is supposed to be born in 1911. According to these findings, Granny is the oldest living killer whale.

When the killer whale was spotted, she was jumping in and out of the water. This behavior is usually a sign of playfulness and is considered a directive towards high health status. Orcas are extremely fast swimmers and have been recorded at speeds of up to 54km/h.

Female orcas usually don’t exceed the limit of fifty years old, and only a few of them overcome the age of a hundred. Scientists started to follow Granny in 1971 when she was already sixty years old and surpassed her age limit.

The Orca Network says that the margin of error on appraising the killer whale’s age is 12 years.

Due to their similarity, there are some ways to tell orcas apart. Among these, we must mention their scars or margins. Granny, for example, has a half-moon shaped notch and a marking on her dorsal fin.

The killer whale or orca belongs to the oceanic dolphin family, of which it is the largest member. Some feed exclusively on fish, while others hunt marine mammals such as seals and dolphins. Their sophisticated hunting techniques and vocal behaviors are often specific to a particular group and passed across generations.

At up to nearly 10 meters long, male orcas are larger than females and have a tall dorsal fin that can go up to 2 meters height. Female length is about 20% less, and the curved dorsal fin is less than half the height of the males.

Granny is generally seen in waters around Canada and Washington.

Unfortunately, the orca populations in the US and Canadian Pacific Northwest, Iceland and Japan were negatively impacted from the 1960s to the 1980s by the live capture industry.

Climate Reports Reveal New Records in 2015

August 3, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Climate Report Reveal New Records

The latest climate report revealed record-breaking temperatures.

The latest climate reports revealed that 2015 is one of the most important years when it comes to global temperatures. Researchers are worried that the climate changes are no longer subtle, with temperatures both in the oceans and on air reaching new limits and sea levels arriving at new historic heights.

The annual surface temperatures overcome the ones confirmed last year. 90 percent of the CO2 inserted in the atmosphere is assimilated by the oceans that also reached record breaking temperatures. The expansion of the oceans is, at the same time, due to melting glaciers. The fastest increase in water level is encountered in the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, with an average of 3.3 mm a year. As they warm, oceans tend to expand, causing the sea level to rise.

Climate reports show that the sea levels in 1993 were about 2.27 inches lower that in 2015. In 2015, the global average temperatures exceeded records set by the ones last year by more than 0.1 degree Celsius.

The heatwave experienced in recent months has heavy consequences claiming thousands of lives. Also, due to the lack of rainfall, several forest fires have devastated entire regions. These are all several effects of global warming that are severely affecting us and have long-lasting impacts if not permanent.

The extreme warmth was also influenced by the El Niño Event in which abnormal high-temperature Pacific Ocean waters were impregnated in the atmosphere together with the heat-trapping gasses radiated from the cities. The El Niño Event also amplified the Pacific tropical cyclone activity which contributed to drought and increasing wildfire in some parts of the world as well as a strong release of carbon dioxide. Drought area was the most extreme since the 1980s.

According to climate reports, last year was a record setting one, thereby, every continent experienced record-breaking temperatures and South America, and Africa suffered from extreme drought conditions. Also, 2015 was the 36th consecutive year of alpine glacial melt, more than half of Greenland’s surface was in a melting state. In areas such as North Alaska, temperatures have increased by 1.2 degrees Fahrenheit every ten years since 2000.

Artificial Leaf Can Produce Burnable Fuel from CO2

July 31, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

artificial leaf

Around this time last year, a marvelous invention was proposed as a potential panacea for all our climate troubles: A solar-powered solution that involves using the ambient carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to create materials for batteries and planes.

Now, almost a year later, another innovation comes out of Chicago to suggest a similar reaction: A solar cell that sucks the CO2 out of the atmosphere while also generating hydrocarbon fuel.

The researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago who made the breakthrough explained that the product is more like an artificial leaf which mimics the process of photosynthesis – turning sunlight and carbon dioxide into fuel.

“The new solar cell is not photovoltaic — it’s photosynthetic,” said the senior author of the study Amin Salehi-Khojin, an assistant professor at UIC. The paper on the new technology has been published in the journal Science.

The process of producing energy from fossil fuels to greenhouse gas can now be reversed in a more sustainable way and help recycle atmospheric carbon into fuel with the help of sunlight.

artificial leaf

Instead of acting like a real plant and producing sugar, the solar cell artificial leaf produces synthesis gas – also known as syngas – which burns on its own or turns into diesel and other materials.

There is one obstacle, however, to actually developing technology like this one or the solar-CO2-lithium innovation.

Producing composites and other fuels from greenhouse gasses costs a lot of money; the revolution in how we produce sustainable energy and fuels can only happen if CO2-derived syngas becomes as cheap as a gallon of gasoline.

Meanwhile, the Chicago researchers’ system uses a different catalyst to convert CO2 to burnable carbon. Nanoflake tungsten diselenide, as it’s called, is some 20 times cheaper than precious metals that have been used in the past.

Addressing climate change seems to be increasingly driven by new innovations, similar to the ones that contributed to the problem for decades. We have examples of such inventions, but it’s going to take a significant leap to take them out of the research lab and into the market.

Salehi-Khojin believes the system they created can be adapted to be used in solar farms, as well as on a smaller scale. Some more years of research could perhaps even make it usable on Mars.

NASA Astronauts Prepare in Atlantic Ocean For Mars Conditions

July 26, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Starting July 21, NASA astronauts have begun training in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean, in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

While it may sound strange to have space men training underwater, NASA’s 16-day mission is supposed to mimic conditions similar to those on planet Mars.

Six astronauts have dived into Aquarius Reef Base, which is located 19 meters below sea level. The mission – dubbed as NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) – is designed to help astronauts and the additional mission teams to check their skill and equipment for potential Mars missions.

According to the space agency, the conditions at Aquarius Reef Base are, in fact, quite similar to the conditions astronauts deal with when they work in microgravity environments.

NASA Astronauts

NASA revealed that the NEEMO aquanauts learn to deal with the changes that come with living and working on a distant asteroid, planet or moon.

During the 16-day training, NASA astronauts had one special experiment that required using DNA sequencer. Reid Wiseman, one of the astronauts in the mission, shared a picture of the tool in action.

The DNA Sequencer, named Minion, helps crew members perform the necessary DNA analyses, test microbes, and monitor their own health.

NASA astronaut Kate Rubins said the DNA sequencer is a useful tool at the International Space Station (ISS).

“NEEMO 21 astronauts and crew will pioneer complex tasks on the seafloor utilising the most advanced underwater navigation and science tools which are methodically choreographed to mimic a Mars exploration traverse,” said Bill Todd, leader of the NEEMO Project.

NASA Astronauts

The NEEMO team chosen for this particular mission is made up of Marc O Griofa (Teloregen/VEGA/AirDocs), NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman, Noel Du Toit (Naval Postgraduate School), Matthias Maurer from European Space Agency, Dawn Kernagis (Institute for Human & Machine Cognition), and NASA astronaut Megan McArthur.

The mission involves simulated spacewalks and lessons of piloting underwater vehicles. One of the first challenges for the team was building a coral nursery, which allowed the crew members to practice their construction skills in low-gravity.

The NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) teams involved in the NEEMO 21 Project are confident this kind of missions could offer astronauts some much-needed practice before engaging in extraterrestrial trips.

Trump Adviser and Retired Army Vet on Benghazi: Clinton is a ‘Disgrace’

July 22, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Pensive Donald TrumpOn July 19, Al Baldasaro, a New Hampshire politician who currently gives advice to Donald Trump on veteran matters, said in a live radio broadcast Hillary Clinton is a “disgrace” and should be executed for treason for the way she handled the 2012 Benghazi scandal.

After likening Clinton to Jane Fonda, who denounced the U.S. military policy during the Vietnam war and was accused of treason after the controversial visit to Hanoi, Baldasaro said Clinton was nothing more than a “piece of garbage”

“She is a disgrace . . .,”

he said.

Baldasaro was especially upset with how the former secretary of state lied to grieving mothers about their sons killed in Benghazi. He noted that Clinton demanded backup security for hundreds of e-mails just after the attack.

“Something’s wrong there,”

the retired marine added.

He also said that he was disgusted by the “whole thing” and called for the presumptive Democratic nominee to be ”put in the firing line and shot for treason.”

Baldasaro, who also picked on the media for the biased way of depicting Trump, had been a Trump supporter ever since before the businessman-turned-politician’s participation in the state’s primary earlier this year.

On Wednesday, the retired army vet was asked whether he would stand by his statements a day earlier. He promptly said that he would without a doubt. He expendable that in the military, a person who mishandles classified information that eventually lands in the hands of the enemy or other countries is shot by the firing squad. So, he believes Hillary should share the fate of wartime traitors.

He also praised America’s freedom of speech which has enabled him to speak his mind, but added that Clinton is not above the law. He noted that if it were for other State department official or veteran, they would be in prison by now.

Clinton’s campaign replied to Baldasaro’s “outrageous rhetoric” accusing him and Trump of mainstreaming hatred just like the nominee did during the Republican Convention. A spokesperson for the Democratic presidential nominee also accused Trump of trying to overtake the GOP through these dangerous tactics.

The Secret Service recently told reporters that they learned about the accusations and they started an investigation into the matter.

Obesity Can Shorten Your Life by Up to Three years

July 15, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

obese American manA  comprehensive study found that being overweight can shorten you life span by one year, while obesity can cost you up to three years of your life. Researchers found that people in the normal BMI range had the lowest risk of dying prematurely.

However, the study found that the death rates also increased for those below the “normal” range and the mildly overweight.

According to the recent research, the risk of dying from all causes rose as the body mass index went up. For instance, those mildly overweight or with a BMI reading between 25.0 and 27.5 risk losing 1.07 years of their lives.

Those mildly obese (BMI: 30 to 35) risk losing 1.45 years of their life spans; the severely obese with a BMI higher than 35 risk losing nearly 2 years, while the morbidly obese (BMI above 40) could see their life span shrink by 2.76 years.

Study authors noted that their meta-analysis which included observations on people worldwide challenges previous believes that being overweight or mildly obese does not impact life span. The findings also challenge the so-called “obesity paradox” which suggests that more body fat has a protective effect on metabolism in healthy people.

Researchers deemed the paradox purely speculative and hypothetical.

Still the risk of premature death dropped suddenly in overweight and obese people aged 70 or older. According to researchers, the risk of early death was more prominent in younger population, i.e. those in the 35-49 age range, than in the older one, i.e. those in the 70-89 range.

Researchers also found that overweight and obese men had a higher risk of premature death than their female counterparts.

Scientists that reviewed the research paper, however, said that study should be taken with a pinch of salt. They noted that it is yet unclear whether we should apply the newly found link between unhealthy BMI and early death to the general population.

NIH researcher David Berrigan and two fellow researchers who were not involved in the study wrote in an accompanying paper that more research needs to be done. They also noted that the findings cannot be generalized as smoking habits and other risk factors for early death were not taken into account in the meta-analysis.

The latest analysis was based on more than 200 studies, which were conducted after 1970, from 32 countries. The study also revealed that the risk of premature death was higher in the underweight and severely obese in Europe than in Asia.

Study results were published July 13 in the journal Lancet.

Meningitis Outbreak Ravages LA Gay Community

July 8, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Rainbow flagA recent meningitis outbreak has sickened dozens of members of the Los Angeles county’s gay community. Researchers are now trying to figure out why the potentially fatal disease affects mostly gay and bisexual men in the area.

So far, county health authorities confirmed that 17 patients have been diagnosed with invasive meningococcal disease. Of these patients, a dozen were diagnosed over the last two months. Eight patients were gay or bisexual men.

Officials at the L.A. County Department of Public Health noted that the disease disproportionally affects males who are either gay of bisexual. Authorities couldn’t tell why there are so many infections among the gay community.

In the L.A. County, there are about 300,000 openly gay or bisexual men among a 10 million population. In June, authorities said that at least one man died from the infection in Orange County where five more people contracted the disease and one more patient died since January.

To date, there were no reported deaths in the L.A. County.

Health authorities are urging gay and bisexual men to vaccinate against the disease. Shots will be available for free regardless whether the recipient is insured or not. The LA LGBT Center and AIDS Healthcare Foundation said that they will too provide free shots.

Los Angeles LGBT Center urged any gay, bisexual man or transgender woman to get the meningococcal vaccine.

Doctors explained that the condition, which is caused by a bacterium called Neisseria meningitidis, can lead to hearing loss, paralysis, epilepsy and even death very rapidly. You can get the disease through saliva. So high risk activities include sneezing, coughing, kissing, and sharing cigarettes or drinks.

It takes a few days for symptoms to emerge which can include migraines, muscle pain, fever, nausea, confusion, and stiff neck.

Doctors first thought that gay and bisexual men may be at a higher risk due to an underlying HIV infection. AIDS patients have weakened immune systems which can make them more susceptible to various types of infections and diseases.

However, according to the L.A. County Acute Communicable Disease Control Program, just one of the 17 patients who now have the infection is HIV-positive. County health officials advise all gay and bisexual men who had more than one sex partner or who are frequent users of gay dating apps to get immunized. And so should HIV/AIDS patients.

A similar outbreak resulted in the deaths of three gay men two years ago, authorities noted.

Runaway Dogs Overcrowd Nation’s Shelters in Wake of 4th of July Fireworks

July 6, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Woman petting a scared dogSeveral U.S. shelters reported that this year’s July 5 was one of the their busiest days in years. Shelter workers explained that Fourth of July fireworks made hundreds of dogs leave their homes and desperately seek protection on the streets.

Pet owners are urged to show up and take their dogs home. Shelter managers couldn’t tell why there was a surge in Pet Amber alerts this year. Many residents have alerted authorities after finding stray dogs wandering on their property.

They knew that the dogs probably belong to somebody as they looked well taken care of despite being scared. Some animals were so frightened that they refused to leave their place of refuge overnight.

So, people had to call Animal Control, which took them to a dog center from where their owners can retrieve them. Some shelter workers call these strays “fireworks dogs” since all of them left their owners during Fourth of July loud celebrations.

Shelter employees noted that many of the animals are absolutely terrified when they reach a shelter as if fireworks caused them a shell shock.

Pets that can be easily identified are taken to their owners directly, authorities explain. But fireworks dogs without an ID are usually taken in by a shelter.

Shelters advise pet owners to ID their pets through a tag or collar if they want to avoid the heartache associated with losing a beloved pet. However, pet owners need to hurry up and reunite with their dogs because Fourth of July canines are not treated differently than strays are.

Most shelters keep the animals and wait for their owners to show up for five days. Afterwards, the animals are offered for adoption. Yet, in the case of fireworks dogs there are some exceptions: if the animal is still not adopted after seven or eight days, its owner can take it home.

In Fort Wayne, about 100 lost pets were retrieved from the streets over just one weekend. In other municipalities, at least two dozen dogs were taken to shelters in each city. Pet owners are advised to call the county or city shelter if their dog has run away.

According to some reports, about 40 percent of dogs fall victims to noise anxiety around 4th of July celebrations. Dogs can also run away if they are scared by loud lightning strike. Experts in animal psychology explained that the condition is a full-fledged panic disorder, which usually triggers a flight response.

Fortunately, the Food and Drug Administration recently approved the first drug to calm down pets in such scenarios earlier this week.
