Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture – a new art video game

April 17, 2015 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Created by The Chinese Room

From creators of Dear Esther, and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, The Chinese Room is dead set on creating yet another first person art video game, but this time it will incorporate elements from all of their previous games.

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture will be available exclusively for the PlayStation 4 – and most surely they will take advantage of Sony’s architecture to create a beautiful world to get lost in.

Players have the task of discovering where everybody in this little quirky village has disappeared – it’s like they vanished from existence all together. Where did they go? How did they leave this world? And more importantly why?

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture was revealed back in 2013 at Sony’s Gamescom presentation, and the trailer made us think of a post-apocalyptic scenario – goose bumps were all present on our arms. You can also feel the brooding sense of terror that comes paired with the unknown right here.

A new trailer has arisen on YouTube yesterday. It’s not as haunting as the launch one, but it still transports you into a unsettling state. It starts in a children’s class room, where you can see signs of fighting. This trailer is not for those who scare easily – more so, if you it gets stuck in your brain the whole day, you’ll probably go insane obsessing about what is really going on.

game footage

Dan Pinchbeck, creative art director in charge of the game, has hinted that it will feel somehow like Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day – ” Imagine reading a novel and you’re really into it, and 30 pages before the end someone comes up and takes it out of your hand and goes, ‘I’m afraid that’s it. Your time’s up.’ “, he said ” It’s an artificial conceit that doesn’t necessarily produce a good player experience.”. After playing an hour in the game, the player will be transported back to the beginning, having a limited time to explore the world and find out a way to solve this mystery.

Dan Pinchbeck has also went out of his way proclaiming the soundtrack to be – “[…] one of the best game soundtracks ever created.”. To be honest, the little track that spans 1 minute and 39 seconds that is available on Soundcloud is just heartbreaking. You can feel it immerse you in the terrifying world of uncertainty. And with their huge success with Dear Esther – the exceptional soundtrack created by Jessica Curry, and the magnificent world you are set in – I have no worries that the guys and girl at The Chinese Room will deliver an extraordinary game.

Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture is set to be released this Summer, but, as I said before, only for the PlayStation 4. Hopefully we’ll see a port soon for other consoles, and PC.

Facebook Introduces New Feature: “On This Day” Brings Back Blasts from the Past

March 26, 2015 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

on this dayFacebook has recently unveiled a new feature, called On This Day that resurfaces old posts, photos and status updates that have happened on a given day in the past.

If a user posted some pictures of a party on this day back in 2012, Facebook will send them an alert reminding them of that particular day and how much fun you’ve had at that party.

In order for the feature to be activated, users must subscribe to the service. If they do, then blasts from the past will appear in the news feed. Users can also go to www.facebook.com/onthisday and see all of the historical posts from that particular day.

Facebook users need to know that the On This Day feature will not turn your older posts public. If a user wants their friends to see the posts or make them public, they can share them to their friends, or tweak the visibility preferences and make them completely public.

This is not the first time the social media giant has tinkered with bringing back blasts from the past, at the end of last year it implemented a Year in Review feature that resembled a digital scrapbook with content gathered from the previous year.

The feature, much like the On This Day, had its fair share of criticism, as many users complained that the feature brought back painful memories from the past. One woman was reminded by the death of her daughter in the Year in Review feature and she went on to release a very painful and eye-opening public letter on how Facebook’s feature did more harm them good.

Facebook isn’t the only online company that likes to delight or shock its users with blasts from the past. Timehop is an app that digs up old posts from various social media networks, such as Twitter, Instagram and even Facebook.

Right now, On This Day is slowly being rolled out, which means that it is not yet available all over the world. There is no word just yet, if the feature will be a permanent one.

Facebook Will Allow People To Transfer Money Via Its Messenger App

March 20, 2015 By Karen Jackson 1 Comment

Facebooks comes yet again, with a new way of expanding their technological empire. The new feature release by Facebook will allow people to transfer money via its Messenger app, using their credit cards.

Facebook Messenger app is among the largest chat platforms on the planet, and over 500 millions users use it every month. Last year, Facebook bought WhatsApp, with nearly $22 billion, and this is a separate messaging app that presently counts 700 million active users worldwide.

In the United States, Facebook is about to launch a money transfer system from one friend to another.

fb

One of the most feared competitor for Facebook’s new offer is the mobile payment, Venmo, an app owned by eBay’s PayPal.  Very popular among young users, what Facebook proposes is not just a payment system, but a social network that permits users to post public or private messages about the purpose of the money they are sending.

The e-commerce start-up, called Square, offers a similar app trough which people can send money via email. Also, Snapchat, the start up known for its messages that disappear, permits users also to send money to one another, trough a partnership with Square.

With the new service, Facebook wished to make simpler the process as much as possible, explained Steve Davis, the product manager who is leading the project.

“We know that conversations about money are happening all the time.”(…)“But most conversations begin in one place and end in another place,” stated Davis.

Facebook, is aiming to keep the payment and conversations in the same message, that could also be used as a record. So the new feature, will be easy to use, as right next to the thumbs up button on the Messenger chat, there will be a dollar sign that, if pressed you can send money.

If there already exists a debit card number saved in the app, you can send cash to the other person in the conversation by pressing the dollar sign and after, you enter the amount. The entire conversation will be saved to serve as later proof.

payments

In order to minimize the risk of unauthorized money transfers, Facebook stated, that users must enter a PIN or they should use Apple’s fingerprint identification system, before they are allowed to send the cash.

The use of debit cards to help the transfer to happen, makes the money transfers between the two bank accounts pretty fast, and allows Facebook to offer this service for free to users. The difference between this and PayPal or Venmo, is that users don’t have to remember to withdraw the money later on, explained Davis.

Like many of the other Facebook features, the button for the Messenger payments will be progressively introduced to Messenger users from the U.S. over the coming months, and  the option will be available on mobile apps but also on the web version.

For starters, the feature will be available to send money only between people who are friends on Facebook, meaning it will not compete right away with Apple Pay and other mobile payment services, that were created specially to help people to make their purchases more easy with their phones. According to Davis, the commercial market creates a completely different set of challenges.

Facebook has stated, that, there have been certain merchants, mainly overseas, who have been informally using Facebook Messenger to make money transactions.

Facebook has a payment business, that earned them almost $1 billion last year, most of the money coming from  games that are hosted on its platform.

It has also been trying with an e-commerce system, that permits merchants to list things for sale and collect the cash from the purchases straight on the social network.

Wall Street has been, enthusiastically anticipating the addition of payments to Facebook Messenger since last June, when Facebook, hired David Marcus, the president of PayPal, to be in charge of its messaging plans.

In January, the chief executive of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg,  told analysts, that is expected for Messenger and WhatsApp, to bring in big money eventually, as he believed that both of these apps, will be huge contributors to their business in time, as long as they do it the right way.

Samsung Galaxy S6 New Rumors

February 26, 2015 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Samsung Galaxy S6 New Rumors

There have been a lot of new rumors about the Samsung Galaxy S6 this past week. We were bombarded with numerous new details about the device before its launch. So we decided to take all those rumors and put them into a nice little list for your convenience, to read before the launch of the new Samsung flagship.

We’ve seen a lot of new details about Samsung’s new smartphone, such as the Galaxy S6 release date, the Galaxy S6 specs and, of course, the Galaxy S6 design. But recently there have been more Samsung Galaxy S6 new rumors than ever before as the launch of the new device is getting closer. Even Samsung is now promoting the smartphone with teasers about “The New Galaxy”.

The new mobile phone from the South Korean company, however, is probably the least secretive thing in the market and we’ll possibly see everything about the new device in the Samsung’s Unpacked event on March 1st. Inside the event, the company will reveal its new smartphone that will compete with the HTC One M9, LG G4, iPhone 6 and many more.

It’s only natural that customers wish to find out more Galaxy S6 details. And with this in mind, we’ve put together a list of Samsung Galaxy S6 new rumors for everyone to enjoy and we’ll focus on things such as the Galaxy S6 release date, the Galaxy S6 design and many others. Enjoy.

Samsung Galaxy S6 New Rumors

Galaxy S6 Release Date

The launch date of the Galaxy S6 is getting closer. We know this because the Galaxy S6 Edge and the Galaxy S6 were seen passing on their way to shelves through the Global Certification Forum. Certifications from the Global Certification Forum are just some of other many certifications the Galaxy S6 will get before its launch date.

The certifications are for two versions of the new smartphone. We expect to see the new device in two different forms, a Galaxy S6 Edge model and a normal one. These certs are great news but the company still has a long way to go before it is ready to make the new smartphones available to the public.

Galaxy S6 Battery Details

In the recent time we’ve seen a lot of new rumors about the Galaxy S6 battery. We’ve seen photos showing that the Galaxy S6 has a 2600 mAh battery. This information was also present in a report last week that claimed the new flagship from Samsung indeed comes with a 2600 mAh battery. This means that the battery on the S6 is 200 mAh smaller than that on the Galaxy S5.

If the company does end up using a smaller battery for the new device it means that there is a lot of confidence in the Exynos 7 chip that we expect to see in the Galaxy S6. We also expect to see a lot of software improvements too, that will help the device deliver a strong battery life without the company having to add to its bulkiness by using a big battery inside the smartphone.

There are also strong rumors that say the S6 will feature wireless charging.

Galaxy S6 Design Rumors

Samsung Galaxy S6 New Rumors

Samsung continues to tease about the Galaxy S6 design. All rumors have hinted at a design featuring metal and maybe glass too.

Samsung released a new teaser about the Galaxy S6 that hints at the smartphone’s form factor. The company posted a small teaser on Twitter that suggests the new device will feature a premium design that will utilize metal and glass.

We expect Samsung to release a device with a premium build quality like the iPhone 6 and finally please its fans all over the world.

Galaxy S6 Camera

The rumors about the Galaxy S6 camera initially hinted at a 20MP or 16MP sensor but it seems like Samsung settled for the 16MP sensor similar to the one in the Galaxy S5.

Samsung claims that they’ve made a lot of improvements on the camera but this doesn’t come as a surprise seeing how much it’s been mentioning the new camera in the past few weeks. The company has been very busy in promoting the camera on the new flagship so we expect it to deliver significant improvements and changes.

Galaxy S6 Storage

The rumors about the storage in the Galaxy S6 hint that the device will come in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB models. If carriers in the United States will release more than one model, expect the smartphones to be priced accordingly. More storage means more money in the smartphone market.

We expect Samsung to make the models with more storage at least $50 more expensive. Samsung already did something similar with the 16GB and 32GB models of the S4. The 16GB model of the Samsung Galaxy S4 was $199.99 and the 32GB one was $250.

Galaxy S6 Price

We expect that the on-contract price of the new Samsung Galaxy S6 to be about the same as previous Galaxy devices. Samsung seems like they have always tried to match the prices of its competitor, Apple. The base 16GB model iPhone 6 is priced at $199.99 on contract. We don’t expect Samsung to make its S6 more expensive than that, or at least, not by a lot.

We expect that the new Samsung Galaxy S6 to be made of metal, and to come with very powerful new features. However, this premium build and great features are also present in HTC One series and the iPhone 6 and both of them have a price of $199.99 in the United States. A much steeper price than that might scare away potential customers. This is not a risk that Samsung can afford to take this year. Mainly because the mobile market is struggling and there are a lot of affordable great Android devices out there already. Not to mention the sales the iPhone 6 has seen.

Galaxy S6 Edge Price

Samsung Galaxy S6 New Rumors

There are rumors that Samsung will also launch a Galaxy S6 Edge. But the new device will have its screen bent on both sides, unlike the Galaxy Note Edge.

The Note Edge is $100 more expensive than the regular Galaxy Note 4. Samsung said that this technology is intended for high-end consumers. The Galaxy S6 Edge will probably have a similar price distinction.

We expect the Galaxy S6 Edge to be at least $100 more expensive than the regular model. This means that some providers will offer the curved display smartphone for $300 or more on the on-contract deal.

Galaxy S6 Expensive Off-Contract

We really don’t expect that Samsung will follow in the steps of the Nexus and make its device cheap off-contract.

We expect that the new flagship from Samsung to cost around $600. This price seems to be the standard for new phones such as the iPhone 6 and Samsung followed this trend for years. If the device will be cheaper than $600 it will definitely shock us.

Galaxy S6 Edge Very Expensive Off-Contract

The Galaxy S6 Edge is expected to be very expensive off-contract. If the curved model of the Galaxy S6 will be more expensive than the regular one by $100 on-contract, we really expect the South Korean company to price it somewhere between $700 and $800 off-contract.

This will probably scare some of Samsung’s customers but we don’t believe it cares all that much. The Galaxy S6 Edge is a premium smartphone that will definitely come with a premium price. We don’t expect it to be anything less than very expensive.

Galaxy S6 Similar Prices

No carriers will get away with pricing the device $100 more than others. Most of the times, all the carriers and retailers in the United States offer the smartphones at around the same price.

In the past we’ve seen Sprint tried to charge $50 more on-contract but the carrier always drops the price to match AT&T and Verizon’s price point.

Galaxy S5 Price Drop

Samsung Galaxy S6 New Rumors

We expect that the Galaxy S5 will get a price drop from the $199.99. It will probably cost around $90 on-contract. The older Galaxy S5 is still a pretty great smartphone and carriers in the United States will possibly offer the older device as an alternative to the more expensive Galaxy S6.

We also believe that refurbished Galaxy S6s will see the light of day after a few months after its release. We saw AT&T offer a Galaxy Note 4 that’s been refurbished for $250. Granted, this isn’t actually a steal, however it’s still a pretty decent deal.

Galaxy S6 vs iPhone 6

The iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6 are two of the best smartphones available and they will be a serious competition for the new Galaxy S6. Things look like they will get more serious as Samsung confirmed it has bought LoopPay. This service is expected to help the company battle with Apple’s new ApplePay service.

LoopPay works with 90 percent of retail locations and over 10,000 cards and banks. The system doesn’t use NFC for payment and instead sends a wireless signal to the reader of the magnetic card. There is already a product sold by the company that works with Android phones and we expect that the Samsung Galaxy S6 will feature a LoopPay system built in.

February 25, 2015 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Best LG Smartphones

If you are looking for an LG to be your next smartphone, then the further information should help you make up your mind. The best four LG smartphones to choose from that you might just like.

The South Korean electronics company, LG, has had an impressive success on the smartphones market. Even though the share of the market is not even close to the levels reached by Apple and Samsung, LG, Android system phones, have found their own niche among certain users around the world.

Smartphones created by LG have unique features like Knock Code, which allows users to gently knock on their screens and in patterns defined by user, to unlock their phones. LG has recently started to use Android 5.0 Lollipop in the devices that it manufactures.

Best LG SmartphonesThe most recent models LG has released on the market, like the G3, G2, G Pro 2 and G Flex, have each their good and bad parts. People looking to buy an LG phone should consider these four models of phones as their options and a comparison made between these phones should help you decide which you want to buy.

LG G3 best smartphones

1. LG G3

The G3 has a size of 5.76 x 2.94 x 0.35 inches and a weight of 5.26 oz, much bigger and heavier than the G2, which measures 5.45 x 2.79 x 0.35 inches and has a weight of 5.04 oz.
The G Pro 2, named the bigger version of the G2, measures 6.22 x 3.22 x 0.33 inches and weighs 6.07 oz. However, the G Flex, is the longest of the all the options, measuring 6.32 x 3.21 x 0.31 inches and weighing 6.24 oz.

The G Flex, has a special curved design that that follows the contour of its face.

Best LG Smartphones

Screen size and display

The G3, the latest smartphone, of the South Korean company, features a display of 5.5-inch, 1440 x 2560. Its screen is bigger than its predecessor as the G2’s screen is of 5.2 inches and a display of 1080×1920 pixels.
The G Pro 2 has a larger screen of 5.9-inches, a display of 1080 x 1920, but the phone with the largest screen is the G Flex model, with a screen of 6.0-inches, and a 720 x 1080 display. When it comes to pixel density, the G3 smart phone has the best looking screen.

Camera

All four smart phones have similar 13 MP back cameras and 2.1MP frontal cameras. Both models, G3 and G2, own LG’s optical image stabilisation option, but the feature has been much improved in the G3 compared to G2.

Hardware

The G3, has embedded a quad core Snapdragon 801processors and 3GB of RAM and thanks to this, the G3 is the most powerful of all of them.G2 and G Flex both have a quad core Snapdragon 800 processor and only 2GB of RAM, and the G Pro 2 has the exact quad core processor but owns 3GB of RAM.

lg_g_pro_2_white

Memory

The G3 has an internal memory of 32GB and a microSD card slot that allows the expanding of the memory with almost 128GB, but the G2 doesn’t have the ability of storage expansion in some markets, to add to its 32GB worth of internal memory.

The same problem appears also in the G Flex, which has been built without any expandable memory options to add to its internal memory of 32GB. On the other hand, G Pro 2 has the expandable memory feature, and can be added up to 64GB, to its internal memory of 32GB.

So in the end it all depends on the preferences of each user, when trying to decide which LG smartphone is the most suited to buy. But, of course, that the last model of LG, the G3 is the most advised to get.

YouTube Kids Soon To Be Released

February 21, 2015 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

youtube-kids

The days refusing to let your child watch cartoons on YouTube by himself as you were afraid he/she would watch something inappropriate are over. YouTube Kids soon to be released,is a new app for children that will run only cartoons and kids shows.

According to YouTube’s product manager, Shimrit Ben-Yair, they have been receiving a lot of demands from parents who were asking them if there was a way of making YouTube a better place for children.

Child with tablet computer

The new app released by Google Inc.’s online video service will be available for smartphones and tablets and reportedly, it should feature original episodes of popular tv shows for children, such as “Thomas the Tank Engine” and “Sesame Street”, but would also include content from the plenty of kids friendly channel featured on YouTube, reported a source familiar with the subject.

Tuesday night has been released a screen shot of the app, which showed the titles mentioned above but there were also mentioned “Reading Rainbow”, “Mother Goose Club” and many others. The app will be called YouTube kids and is expected to be free and will work as a separate app, from the mainstream YouTube app. The design of the new app will have a kids friendly look, minimal scrolling and bulbous icons, added the source.

YouTube-Kids-iPad

The home screen, will have large tiles, with images of popular television shows and four simple icons consisting of, music, shows, explore and learning, which will allow children to browse trough the top videos. Trough the list of approved content, there will be National Geographic Kids videos, and the puppet masters from the Jim Henson Company.

The app will also include features for parents, for example there will be available a timer which parents could use to control how much video kids are allowed to watch. However, there is one small thing, that might disappoint certain people, for the beginning, YouTube kids will not run on Apple devices. After the release, the app will be available only for Android operating system devices.

Google is planning to announce the new app on February 23d, when the executive of YouTube, Malik Ducard, will appear at the Kidsscreen Summit, a conference regarding the kids entertainment industry. Launching an app like this, that is destined for children use, Google will have to agree with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, which is inspected by the Federal Trade Commission.

One of the COPPA rules, states that websites that are created for children must notify parents if collecting personal information.

Kids-

So far, it is not clear whether the new app will generate money for YouTube, and another thing that is uncertain is how would content associates make money. There is the option of generating revenue by advertising ads in the app, but this seems to be still under discussion. Deciding to do so, Google will surely find a lot of advertisers willing to buy spots.

The vice president and media director of advertising agency, Starcom, Darcy Bowe, stated that her clients are affected by the lack of digital advertising places adjusted for children. Instead, they tend to put more money into television ads. Until now, YouTube has not been an option, as the site is designed for people from the age 13 and above, Bowe added.

When asked if they would be willing to advertise on a kids-safe YouTube app, Bowe, replied that everybody would be interested and would love the idea.

YouTube videos addressed to children have had an incredible audience, the family entertainment channels have risen with 200% in views, every year, compared to 50% for the rest of the site.

Healbe GoBe Review: Is A Fitness Gadget Able To Count The Calories You Have Eaten?

February 10, 2015 By Karen Jackson 1 Comment

healbe-gobe

When struggling to loose weight, being able to be informed on how much energy you have spent, could be very helpful, but there are two aspects of the problem. A fitness tracker might tell you how many calories you have burnt during a 5 kilometres you have run in the morning, but it wouldn’t know about the high caloric breakfast you might have after. For those worrying about that now, there is a device that can tell you if you have eaten more calories than you have burnt.

SUMMARY

There are gadgets that allow you to log your daily diet, but people might forget to log on their meals every time, including the goodies they cheated their diet with. So, the perfect fitness wearable gadget would be the one that tracks your physical activity, auto logs your sleep hours and is aware of everything you have eaten without you telling it. GoBe, by Healbe costs $300 and it promises to do all of those things

The marketing slogan of the products is “GoBe You” and the main idea of it is quite simple: a wearable gadget that can provide a complete overview of your every day fitness condition. The device can tell if you have eaten more calories than you have burned, or the other way around, can analyse the quality and duration of your sleep, can keep count of you daily water intake and can even measure the stress levels, among others. For those who are into fitness, diets and keeping their body healthy the device might be a dream come true.

After all these life changing claims, it was obvious there were going to be certain critics who were doubting its capacity, saying that they found it hard to believe the gadget can measure the caloric intake, the way it was presented by the company. The only way to prove them right or wrong was to test the device itself.

DOES IT REALLY WORK?

For a broad explanation, the system the gadget was created, is based on a impedance sensor that can detect fluid levels in our body tissue. Theoretically after we consume food, our system converts it to glucose and as body cells absorb it, they release water. GoBe calculates this moving of fluid and with the help of an algorithm it converts all that into a number of calories.

The device has risen a lot of medical controversies, as medical experts believe that the measuring of calories in this manner was impossible and also they are skeptics whether the device can measure glucose in the blood non invasively, as they haven’t yet found a way to do it otherwise.

So the only way to prove them wrong or right was to test the device itself.

HARDWARE

healbe-gobe-back-2

The device is designed to be worn on the wrist. The aspect is not very discreet, compared to fitness trackers. GoBe is a large metallic piece fixed with a plastic strap. It has one button and a punctured top section serves to hide a simple LED display.

The bottom of the gadget has two plug-ins for charging and the metal sensor that is in contact with the skin. The aspect of it might remember you of a GPS tracking device similar to the ones that could be used to attach on criminals who were released out on bail. Most probably it is not one of the cutest devices but isn’t either all up in your face. The dark grey strap can be taken out and replaced with a purple one, which comes with the package.

GoBe has three sensors: the impedance sensor, a pressure sensor and an accelerometer. All three together, calculate calories, heart rate and activity. The last two sensors together are able to analyse your sleep. It can connect to the phone via Bluetooth and it is water proof up to three meters which means users can shower and swim at peace.

It is not uncomfortable to wear, even though the size of the main sensor part is bigger than the wrist with about 1 centimetre, almost 2 towards the ticker part. The tester admitted to feeling a small itch on the spot where the sensor makes contact with the skin.

Regarding the battery life, Healbe claims it will last for three whole days.

SOFTWARE

app

The gadget works on both Android and iOS, and the app created for it will show all your situation.
The pairing process is quite simple as the app asks you to switch on your GoBe and once it finds it you pair the two of them the same as any other Bluetooth device. After that you will need to fill in your vitals, for a more precise calorie calculation, like size, gender, age etc.).

Once that is completed, you will be forwarded to the main interface of the app, which has five sections: Energy, Water, Heart, Sleep and Stress. So it was designed for more actions than just calculate the food intake. If swiping every section’s icon to the left, you will read a short summary, total amount of burnt calories, sleep hours and so on.

The prime section is called “My Energy Balance”, portrayed as a circular icon that can be used as a visual shortcut. At the beginning the circle will be half filled and depending on the calories intake of that day, the volume inside will grow or decrease. Under this, written with the big font is the number that shows your up to date shortfall or excess in KCAL. If you scroll down, it shows you how many grams of protein, carbohydrates and fat you have eaten. It will also inform you on how many of those grams have transformed back into energy.

gobesoftware1

HOW DOES IT WORK?

When referring to GoBe, the message transmitted on Healbe’s site is “Tell it nothing. Knows everything.” Even though this is the goal of the invention apparently this might be true only in the minds of its marketing team. The device doesn’t ask you to log food manually, but you have to inform it on when you have eaten, if not you will get no tracking.

You are supposed to press for two seconds GoBe’s only button to let the device know that you are preparing to eat, and from that point on GoBe should receive the rest of the information from the impedance sensor for the next 15 to 30 minutes, while your body is absorbing what you ate. A procedure that seems legit, but parts away from the idea of the gadget being automatic. Sometimes one might forget to press the button, or remember about it during the meal.

healbe-gobe-wrist-pulse

But it comes with a back up plan. When you sink with the app, if the device logged any impedance information, it would ask you to confirm if you were eating or not at that time. So it wont skip the meals you forgot to fill in. What is a little bothering is that the at times there are several pop ups that keep asking if you ate at a certain time. Sometimes these periods are overlapping. For example it asks “Did you eat between 12:00 and 12:25?” and then ask you if you ate between 12:15 and 12:35, etc. If you fill in the data at the end of the day, you might not remember exactly at what time you had a biscuit, even if you try to remember.

Another problem might be the battery life. It can happen the battery to run out while you are sleeping or at the end of the day, even if you have charged it in the morning. The battery dying right before a meal, and having to constantly charge it, can be quite frustrating, if it affects the accuracy of calorie counting, showing a large difference of caloric intake between the manually calculated and the ones logged by GoBe.

When your comes to tracking your sleep, GoBe might turn out to be exceptional as unlike the counting of calories this is indeed automatic. It really manages to log sleep and naps very accurate. As the device is aware of your heart rate trough out the day, plus the movement information reported by the accelerometer, and the extra data the device would gather while you are sleeping.

Apart from this, the gadget offers information about the quality of your sleep, including the moments when your heart rate is below 60(bradychardia) and when you go trough irregular heart beating(arrhythmia) and also tells you, if your body goes trough heart blocks.

On the fitness activity tracking, the device seems to do a good job as well, since it can measure your pulse, it will know when you are running and for how long and in this way it would tell you the effects it will have on your body.

CONCLUSION

purple_large

Bottom line, the gadget might need further improvement, especially in the counting calories area, as it doesn’t deliver useful enough data. And there is also the fact that it’s a device that requires interaction, despite its claims of “knowing everything”.

Barrett Brown is Going to Jail for Hacking

January 24, 2015 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Some bad news surfaced recently. Barrett Brown is going to jail for hacking as a judge sentenced the journalist to spend 63 months in jail and to pay abour $890,000 as restitution for the Stratfor Global Intelligence hack in 2011. Supporters of the young activist and writer claim that he was doing nothing more than just providing links to the actual material. However, he is still going to jail for five years.

You most likely know Brown as a spokesperson for Anonymous, an unofficial title he used now and then. Barrett Brown isn’t known as a hacker, however. He wasn’t the one that actually hacked Stratfor. About a year ago, Jeremy Hammond, a member of Anonymous, was also charged on the same offence by a federal judge and was sent to spend 10 years in prison. It was Hammond who said to The Guardian in December that Brown did nothing more than just provide a link to the data that was hacked for the public.

The Department of Justice dropped several of the charges connected to the sharing of the link to the hacked data. Brown was left with a more serious charge claiming he helped a Stratfor hacker evade officials, one for search obstruction and several charges in a different case that claim Brown threatened a federal officer.

Over the duration of Brown’s trial, the charges regarding the link to the hacked data were removed. During that time, a campaign to free the 33 year old was being born. Barrett spent 31 months in jail, and activists claim that the judge’s decision to make Brown face an enormous fine and aggressive sentence is setting a “dangerous precedent”. However, Brown only has $225 to pay in fines. The rest of the $890,250 will go to clients of Stratfor, and Stratfor itself for… well, pay back.

More jaw dropping than this, however, is the fact that Brown was originally sentenced to spend 105 years in jail for the initial charges and other offenses. While no one is actually claiming Brown did absolutely nothing wrong, it’s the government’s aggressive stand against hackers and anyone it decides is a hacker, to be exact, that is absolutely terrifying.

The definition of hacking of the government in the United States is quite wide and the punishments are very severe, as we have learned after the suicide of Aaron Swartz. President Obama has just recently set in place a new set of proposals regarding cyber security which will broaden even further the US government’s definition of hacking and make the penalties even more severe. This will most likely make matters take an even worse turn.

It is now clear that the government is interpreting however it wants hacking laws that were put into place in the ‘80s. If this trend continues, the average person may be thrown in jail for just accessing or sharing a link to some hacked data. This is not a good thing to do to people who are using computers in a country that claims to respect the freedom of speech as much as the U.S. does.

Dell XPS 13 2014 Review: Sleek, Powerful & Expensive

January 10, 2015 By Karen Jackson 6 Comments

dell-xps-13-side

Since Dell first launched it back in 2012, the XPS 13 laptop received small but quite important changes while maintaining a very sleek design. Ultrabooks have become very popular these last few years and a lot of laptops now look like Apple’s MacBook Air, and we’re not just talking about the Dell XPS 13.

We’ve really liked the previous generations of Dell’s XPS 13 laptops but there were always a few reasons they weren’t our  top choice. A very important reason is that they always felt like they weren’t actually high-end machines.

The first XPS 13 featured a display with a low resolution of 1,366 x 768 which also had a bad viewing angle. This was kind of disappointing seeing how the laptop was pretty expensive at the time. However, the original XPS 13 was still a pretty decent laptop with a solid build quality.

In 2013, Dell finally made the decision of putting a full HD display on their laptop. However, that year, Dell forgot to put the latest trend in their laptop: a touchscreen. The 2013 edition of the XPS 13 was a 13 inch $1,300 machine that featured no touch screen. This seemed quite unacceptable at the time.

Finally, after years of tweaks, the Dell XPS 13 features a 1080p touch screen display. It took a lot of time but Dell eventually polished their machine into something that satisfies nearly every need. This newest edition of the laptop is without a doubt a very capable and sturdy machine and in some ways it even overcomes the Apple MacBook Air.

For $1,049 you can buy the laptop without the touch screen feature but this doesn’t really seem like a good idea to save a few dollars. Our configuration features an Intel Core i5 processor, 128GB SSD and 8GB of memory. The price for this configuration is $1,349. It’s a very steep price, we’ll give you that, as you can get the same configuration for $1,000 or even less, but the premium build and design is worth it. An even better configuration of the Dell XPS 13 featuring an i7 CPU and a SSD drive of 256GB costs $1,649.

The Dell XPS 13 doesn’t feature an HDMI port but instead the company chose to put a mini-DisplayPort on their ultrabook. This doesn’t seem like a good idea but the fact that Dell will provide full support for the laptop over the next years and that its body resembles more a 11 inch machine than a 13 one makes it a great choice over other 13 inch laptops.

This is our Dell XPS 13 review.

Dell XPS 13: Features and Design

dell-xps-13-features

The design of the laptop is mostly unchanged from when it first came out in 2012. It’s a very simple and sleek silver aluminum laptop which immediately makes us think of the Apple MacBook, but to be fair, this design is pretty standard nowadays in almost all ultrabooks. Over the years, ultrabooks have had similar designs so it’s kind of unfair to keep saying that silver ultrabooks all resemble the design used by Apple, even if they do so, more or less.

When compared to other 13 inch notebooks, you will find that the Dell XPS 13 is slightly smaller in size. This is because the XPS 13 is closer in size to an 11 inch machine but still features a 13 inch display. This is claimed by Dell and while it isn’t exactly so, the device is definitely smaller than other 13 inch laptops.

The feel of the laptop is also amazing. The top side of the laptop is aluminum and the base of it is carbon fiber which makes it look and feel almost bulletproof. The display is covered by a layer of Gorilla Glass. The same components as a normal sized 13 inch laptop are packed into a smaller package make the laptop feel very sturdy and quite heavier than you may expect it to be.

The black matte design in the interior is very minimalist and only features a big touch pad and the standard keyboard used by Dell in their laptops. As with other generations, the keys (which are backlit, of course) are overly rounded and the typing is very pleasant and quiet. However, we feel that the function keys are somewhat annoying because they are only half in size when compared to the rest of the keys.

One other annoyance are the special features of those keys like volume control or brightness require the user to have the ‘Fn’ key held down to access those special functions.

The most exciting feature of the laptop, however, remains the 13.3 inch display. 2013’s version of the laptop increased the display resolution to 1,920 x 1,080 from the first edition of 1,366 x 768 but still didn’t feature touch capabilities. With this newest edition of the Dell XPS 13 we finally received a full HD touch screen display which makes the laptop a whole lot better to control in Windows 8.

The screen is quite bright with great colors and looks very good from a variety of different angles. That being said, the overlay of the screen made of glass is extremely glossy and is a magnet for glare from even the most remote lighting source.

Dell XPS 13: Performance

dell-xps-13-main

Maybe it’s because of the smaller casing, but it looks like Dell wasn’t quite capable of cramming in the standard connections and ports on the laptop. It has an SDXC card reader and instead of an HDMI port, the laptop only features a mini-DisplayPort output. An Ethernet port is also completely missing from the ultrabook.

We had on our hands the $1,349 version of Dell’s laptop which has an Intel Core i5-4200U CPU, 128GB SSD and 8GB RAM. This is probably enough for most people but for less money ($1,049) you could get a version of the same laptop featuring a Core i3 CPU and 4GB RAM. However, the cheaper model doesn’t include a touch screen which is not a very good thing for a laptop that costs more than $1,000. You could choose to spend another $300 and get the model that boasts an i7 CPU and a larger 256GB SSD.

In a benchmark test, the Dell XPS 13 performed amazingly well and even beat the newest 13 inch MacBook Air from Apple in some of the tests. However, the margins were so close that it’s highly unlikely anyone would notice a difference amongst the high end ultrabooks currently found on the market. A much more important factor for laptops such as the Dell XPS 13, and all ultrabooks in general, is the battery life.

While Dell claims you can get 15 hours of battery life from the laptop, we can say that this isn’t exactly the case. While you can, maybe, get 15 hours of life from the laptop, you can’t exactly do so if you plan on using the laptop for… well… anything at all. The original XPS 13 had a very bad battery life but this is not the case with this edition.

These more or less ridiculous claims from Dell may come from the fact that Dell used a power saving Intel processor and a power efficient display but even so, the 15 hours battery life claim seems to be a little exaggerated.

The Dell XPS 13 lasted for an impressive 8 hours and 27 minutes in a video playback test. Even though it doesn’t quite reach what Apple’s MacBook Air is capable of, it certainly is comparable to other ultrabooks boasting the same configurations from manufacturers such as Samsung, Acer and HP.

It’s worthy noting that the original XPS 13 launched in 2012 only lasted around 4 and a half hours when subjected to the same test. The 2013 version of Dell’s XPS 13 was able to run for around 5 hours and a half.

We tested the laptop with different software to see exactly how it performs. These are the results from our tests:

  1. In Adobe Photoshop CS5 image processing test, the Dell XPS 13 took 243 seconds to complete, the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus took 248, the Acer Aspire S7-392-6411 took 251 seconds, HP Spectre 13t took 261 and MacBook Air (2013 generation, 13 inch) took 333 seconds to complete.
  2. In Apple iTunes encoding test, the MacBook Air (2013 generation, 13 inch) was the fastest at 82 seconds, followed by the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus at 119 seconds, the Acer Aspire S7-392-6411 at 119 seconds, the HP Spectre 13t with 120 seconds, the same as the Dell XPS 13 also completing the challenge in 120 seconds.
  3. In Handbrake Multimedia multitasking test the results were as follows. Dells XPS 13 completed the task in 470 seconds, the HP Spectre 13t in 476 seconds, the Acer Aspire S7-392-6411 finished the task in 500 seconds, the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus in 506 seconds and the MacBook Air (2013 generation, 13 inch) finished the task last in 532 seconds.
  4. In our battery drain test we subjected the laptop to a video playback test and the results were as follows. The MacBook Air (2013 generation, 13 inch) lasted the longest with 865 minutes, the HP Spectre 13t followed with 518 minutes, the Samsung Ativ Book 9 Plus lasted for 509 minutes, the Dell XPS 13 lasted for 507 and coming last was the Acer Aspire S7-392-6411 which only lasted for 434 minutes.

Dell XPS 13: Conclusion

dell-xps-13-front

Dell fixed on the issues that plagued previous generations of the XPS 13 laptop and that is commendable. While it’s still pretty expensive considering how much these kinds of components cost at the moment, please remember that the casing made of carbon fiber and aluminum is top notch and the size is actually quite smaller than all other 13 inch ultrabooks.

It’s the first time we can actually say that the Dell XPS 13 really deserves a place amongst some of the best and high end 13 inch laptops.

Wrapping up…

PROS

– The Dell XPS 13 is obviously built with quality in mind

– Amazing carbon fiber and aluminum casing

– Feels very sturdy and very well made

– High resolution display

– Touch screen

– Great CPU

– Comes in different versions and different price tags

CONS

– Expensive

– Doesn’t feature a very good variety of ports

– No HDMI port

– You could buy a MacBook Pro for the same price you would pay for a Dell XPS 13

– Design very similar to that of older models

The verdict

The earlier versions of the Dell XPS 13 showed potential but didn’t quite come close to what we needed because they pretty much lacked standard features. Over the time, Dell finally put a high resolution display on the laptop, added a touch screen and finally made the 2014 edition a laptop that is great and capable of fulfilling most needs.

They used lasers to achieve this. Philips’ newest TV, the Smart Laser Backlight UHD TV takes advantage of a red laser to show UHD images on the display. The device is capable to connect to both iOS devices and Android ones. The company’s demo at the CES 2015 of its smartwatch was pretty amazing and the device itself performed amazingly well. Not to mention that the Alcatel Onetouch Watch is a lot less expensive than Apple’s own Watch.

The Onetouch Watch works with both iOS devices and Android devices and has a retail price of $149, far less than the starting price of $350 for Apple Watch. It will hit the market in March.
