Hawaii Bill Seeks to Implement Full Renewable Transportation

Hawaii has a new bill for 100 percent renewable transportation by 2045.

The state of Hawaii of the United States is one of the most progressive ones when it comes to environmental protection policies. The state legislature has introduced a new bill which seeks to implement complete renewable transportation by 2045.

This goal joins the currently implemented target of having all the energy utilities in Hawaii coming from renewable sources also by 2045. The renewable transportation bill is being supported by the Blue Planet Foundation. Jeff Mikulina, the director of the organization, has stated that Hawaii needs to develop a proper vision for its future of transportation, as currently, the majority of fossil fuels go to the transportation industry.

The new renewable transportation bill would not require that the residents of the state discard their fossil fuel-powered cars, at least not yet. This sentiment was emphasized by Representative Chris Lee, the chairman of the Energy and Environment house committee.

Nonetheless, the bill proposes a somewhat ambitious goal, especially in a state where out of an estimated 1 million cars on the road, there are only around 5,000 electric cars. Unfortunately, Hawaii is not a big enough market to decide the trends of the auto industry and, as such, the state is somewhat dependent on the decision they make. Therefore, the new renewable transportation bill does not impose a strict mandate, just a relative goal.

Some of the details of the bill are still being worked out since its introduction into the state legislature. It remains to be seen if it will pass or not, as Hawaii seems keen on becoming a trend setter for renewable energy despite the fact that new US president favors more conventional sources of energy.

In addition to the transportation bill, lawmakers have also introduced a new bill which seeks to increase the required number of charging stations across the state. Currently, there is only one station for every 100 parking spaces. This bill could help incentivize more residents to purchase electric cars, as they would have more charging options.

The renewable transportation bill is also supported by local auto dealerships, but the move to electric cars will require a massive marketing campaign in order to convince residents about its benefits.

Science Created The First Stable Semisynthetic Organism

A team of scientists managed to create the first stable semisynthetic organism which is a breakthrough in the area.

A team of scientists managed to create the first stable semisynthetic organism, an achievement based on many years of work and which could open up many new paths.

Three years ago, a team of researchers reported a breakthrough. They presented the first organism with 6 bases. The genetic base of all the DNA-based life forms is based on four bases. These are A, T, G, and C. Or more exactly, adenine and thymine. And also guanine and cytosine.

In 2014, the scientists presented an organism that had 6 bases. Four of them, the aforementioned ones, were natural. The other two were artificial. They were titled X and Y.

The research team is part of the La Jolla, California Scripps Research Institute. They were led by Floyd Romesberg. At the time, the researchers were able to incorporate their new base pair. This was introduced into an E. coli bacterium. Still, the ensuing organism did not maintain the pair. It was eliminated during the division process.

The X and Y were slowly dropped. And the extra information they left behind was limited. Even though the DNA was modified, the data was left incomplete.

Now, Romesberg and his team beat the process. They were able to create the first stable semisynthetic organism. This is also a modified bacterium.

A research paper on the matter was released earlier this week. It was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Available online since January 23, it is titled as follows. “A semisynthetic organism engineered for the stable expansion of the genetic alphabet”.

The stable semisynthetic organism was seen to be able to retain its synthetic base. They have remained in the DNA after the division process. This modified bacterium is based on three pairs. They are A-T, C-G, and the new X-Y.

Romesberg went to offer some details. According to him, the first semisynthetic organism had an unstable genome. This latter has to be stable throughout the lifespan. And not just for a day.

This first stable semisynthetic organism is able to do so. It has managed to maintain its extra information. As such, Romesberg declared that they have made it more life-like.

Researchers used a nucleotide transporter. This helped them create the modified bacterium. With help from the transporter, the semisynthetic organism was able to hold on to the X-Y pair. As it was maintained, the added pair was also copied. And it then distributed across the cell membrane.

CRISPR-Cas9 was used in order to test the results. This is a gene-editing tool. With it, the scientists analyzed the now stable semisynthetic organism.

They looked for cells containing the synthetic base. Such cells could have been marked as foreign. Because of this, the organism would have destroyed them.

For the moment, the added synthetic bases just exist. The stable semisynthetic organism has no utility for them. This fact has been specifically programmed. First of all, the scientists meant to determine if the bases could just survive.

It remains to be seen if the microbes will be imbued with the power to read the added code. Or when they may be determined to do so. According to the researchers, the current organism is a breakthrough in itself.

And making them read the code could open up a new path. It may help create protein currently unavailable in nature. As such, new medicine and drugs could be developed.

More research on the matter is nonetheless needed. Presently, the researchers pointed out the following fact. The study can be considered the foundation for future research and discoveries.

Google Maps Adds Parking Indicator

Google Maps beta users report a parking indicator feature.

Google Maps is one of the most appreciated services in the world as it has facilitated the travel experiences of many users. But Google is not resting on its laurels and seems to always on the lookout for new features to add which will improve the quality of their app.

The newest feature to come to Google Maps seems to be a parking indicator. As many drivers know, trying to find parking in a crowded location can be frustrating and time-consuming. It seems that the prayers of drivers were finally answered as Google has launched a parking availability alerts to the beta version of the Google Maps app.

The feature was first hinted back in August 2016, when Android Police discovered several code strings in a teardown of the v9.34 beta app. However, only now has Google started to launch the new feature for a limited number of beta users for the 9.44 version.

According to reports from those users, the function of parking indicator feature for Google Maps is quite self-explanatory. It will issue alerts to users regarding how hard it will be to find a parking space in certain locations at a certain time. The app will offer specific details regarding the levels of parking congestion such as severe, hard, medium, and easy. It will also include a description for each level.

Users which were fortunate enough to get access to new parking feature will see a small “P” icon next to the driving duration estimate of the GPS mode of Google Maps. The level of parking congestion will be easily determined by the color of the icon. For example, if parking is limited the P icon will become red.

As useful as the new feature may be for drivers, at this point, it is unclear how and in which location Google will make the determinations regarding parking congestion.  Apps that provide similar functionality like Parker, obtain their information by tapping into smart meters in garages or streets. Other systems use motion sensors, car-tracking cameras, GPS and other technologies to determine the traffic and parking congestion.

Furthermore, it is unclear when the general release of the future will occur, but it should be in the near future provided the beta test irons out all the bugs quickly.

Bacon, Nutella, And Other Foods Increase The Risk Of Cancer

Recent research has shown that not just Nutella, but many other foods and beverages influence the risk of cancer among Americans. According to Michael Greger, the NutritionFacts founder, many chronic diseases are influenced by two primary factors: lifestyle and diet.

More precisely, both account for 80 percent of the source of any severe condition. The researchers discovered in recent years that many widely-popular foods could lead to cancer and several other potentially deadly conditions.

Based on the latest findings, it looks like palm oil contains a carcinogenic contaminant. This edible oil is used in Nutella and other foods. Last year, the WHO officials announced that processed meats, such as ham, bacon, and hot dogs, can lead to colorectal cancer.

Plus, red meat might also influence this risk. Another group of experts came to the conclusion that alcohol can lead to seven types of cancers. According to the scientists, the highest cancer prevalence is among heavy drinkers.

However, people who consume moderate and low amounts of alcohol are also at risk. According to registered dietitian Angie Murad, although many studies link certain foods to cancer, it doesn’t necessarily mean that consuming them is bad altogether.

Plus, many people get confused, and they no longer know what foods they should avoid. Therefore, Murad believes that Americans should improve their lifestyle and adopt healthier dietary habits.

She also says that based on the WHO statistics, our average lifetime likelihood of developing colon cancer is just five percent. Plus, there are other factors which might contribute to the development of this condition, including the overall quality of our eating style and genetics.

Nevertheless, Murad notes that even if bacon is not an unhealthy food, it becomes dangerous if we consume it on a daily basis. She underlines that people who want to prevent chronic diseases and cancer should be careful with all their lifestyle decisions, not just with some particular foods which might be related to cancer.

As such, she recommends people to be more physically active during the day. Also, Americans shouldn’t focus on consuming starches and meat, but on whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and other healthy foods.

Achieving a healthy weight is not hard as long as you make the right decisions regarding your lifestyle and diet excepting the people who have a chronic disease or metabolic disorders which prevent them from losing weight.

Ruby Seadragon Captured on Video

Scientists capture on video the mysterious Ruby Seadragon.

Our planet’s ocean holds a myriad of marine ecosystems which many remain unexplored. As such, it is no surprise that scientists are able to find new species of marine animals every so often. Among one of the most recently discovered species is the ruby seadragon which was even captured on video for the first time.

Until now, scientists have discovered a total of three species of seadragons, the Common, Leafy and the Ruby seadragon. However, the first two species are quite well documented and were observed in their natural system plenty of times, the ruby seadragon proved more elusive.

Researchers from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California at San Diego, in collaboration with scientists from the Western Australian Museum have conducted a scientific expedition to film the mysterious animals in the wild, just off the coast of Western Australia.

The research team used a small remotely operated vehicle, equipped with a camera, to explore the waters at around 164-feet deep. It was only several days of exploring that the researchers were able to capture the first sightings of the mysterious species in the wild. They filmed two Ruby Seadragons near the Recherche Archipelago of Western Australia, and the scientists have new information regarding their habitat, behavior, and anatomy.

The captured seadragons lead to the conclusion that the Ruby Seadragon lacks the ornate appendages which are similar to leafs. They once thought that this characteristic was found among all seadragons, based on the findings in the previously analyzed Common and Leafy subspecies. They use the appendages to camouflage in seaweed or kelp meadows as a way to avoid predators.

Scientists became aware of the Ruby seadragon subspecies due to preserved specimens that were collected around a hundred years ago. Although the remains were initially misidentified as belonging to the Common or Leafy Seadragons, the researchers were able to discern that it’s a new subspecies as they assembled a rotating 3D model of the animals using a computer tomography scan from more than 5,000 X-ray slices. They were particularly intrigued by the lack of the leafy appendages.

However, the only way to confirm the existence of the Ruby Seadragon was to actually observe in the wild. The research team accomplished their objective by partnering with Total Marine Technology, ROV company based in Australia.

Scientists Developed Artificial Spider Silk

Scientists were able to produce artificial spider silk.

Scientists have developed a new way of creating artificial spider silk using protein molecules. By using only 10 rice grains’ weight they can produce up to 1,5 miles of thread which is almost as strong as the natural fiber. Spider silk is known for its amazing properties but harvesting and applying it in real-life situations have proven difficult and expensive.

A team of international researchers from Spain, Sweden, the UK, and China has built a spinning device by taking inspiration from the spider anatomy. The machine is able to create synthetic silk more efficiently than any spider while still maintaining its amazing properties such as being stronger than Kevlar and being 30 times thinner than a human hair. Furthermore, the artificial silk is easier overall to produce and harvest, thus making it considerably cheaper than the real thing.

The study, published in the journal Natural Chemical Biology, reveals that the natural spider silk is made of several protein molecules commonly known as spidroins. They can be found in the spider’s silk glands and can be found in a very concentrated solution.

When the spider wants to release the web, the solution is squeezed through a small duct with an acidic and high-pressure environment which forces the molecules to link together and form the spider silk. As you know, spiders use it to create their webs which wouldn’t be possible if the silk wasn’t strong and had very low density.

Researchers experienced difficulties replicating the process the spider used. They were able to synthesize the spidroin protein molecules by programming bacteria and yeast to produce it but had trouble linking the molecules together into the fiber. However, they were able to create the artificial spider silk by developing their own narrow duct from what is known as a glass capillary tube measuring only 10 to 30 microns wide at the tip.

The researchers were successful in creating 125 milligrams of protein molecules using a liter of bacterial culture. As the molecules linked together, the researchers ended up with a km of silk from just their initial liter of bacterial culture. Despite being somewhat inferior to the natural silk, their silk was still superior in strength and elasticity than all other previous attempts at replicating the natural material.

Valve Adds Controller Support to All Steam Games

Valve adds controller support for all Steam games.

Steam has received a new beta update which reveals that the popular game platform will soon be able to have controller support for all games. This will allow gamers more options and flexibility. Furthermore, the Steam controller interface will be able to work with Xbox gamepads as well.

When it comes to games and how to play them, gamers like to have as many options as possible. This goes from using a standard keyboard and mouse to using a gamepad or joystick. However, not all Steam games have supported the option to use other types of controllers.

The new Steam client update which is currently on the beta version of the platform will soon be released on the live version. With its release, gamers will be able to enjoy whatever Steam game they want with a controller. The update includes support for specific controllers such as the Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers, as well as any other general X-input gamepads.

The new update will allow gamers to properly customize the controls of their gamepads, by mapping any combination of keyboard and mouse functions to the device. However, standard controllers are well-known for lacking the capacity needed to play a strategy game for example. Only Valve’s unique Steam controller is able to offer this type of functionality due to its unique interface.

During the previous year, Valve decided to support PS4 controllers by allowing them access to the Steam controller’s interface. This allowed users to map any combination of keyboard and mouse controls to the specific buttons on the controller so that it can play a larger variety of games than ever before.

Although many gamers appreciated Valve for increasing the number of options they have to play a game, many also wondered if the Xbox One controller will also receive the same perks as the PS4 controller. After a few months of waiting, Valve has finally decided to announce that in the same patch, the Xbox One controller will be able to access the Steam controller’s interface and benefit from its customization options.

Lyft and Uber Adress Discrimination Report

Uber and Lyft have responded to accusations of discrimination.

Car-sharing or ride-hailing services have only been around for a few years now, but have seen a lot of controversies, more so than any other companies in recent memory. The latest situation comes after both Uber and Lyft, two of the most prominent companies in the US market reportedly discriminated against passengers from minorities.

Earlier this year, a study revealed that customers which are part of certain minority groups were more often discriminated against by both Uber and Lyft services. The study focuses mostly on how customers of African-American descent face more cancellations from drivers, or at least waited longer for their rides. Women from this group even experienced longer rides than normal.

The study gained traction and was picked up by news sites, and it even reached Senator Al Franken of Minnesota. He wrote an open letter on November 2, and addressed it to both companies, urging them to investigate these reports of discrimination based on race.

The study revealed that the revealing the name and photo of a customer when a request to a driver is placed, is what mainly caused the drivers to discriminate between their customers. People with a picture on their profile or with black-sounding names had experienced the highest degree of discrimination. As such, the senator suggested that removing the need for passenger’s name and photos to be displayed when requesting a ride could be a solution to this problem.

Today, the senator decided to publish both Uber’s and Lyft’s responses to his open letter. The document reveals that both companies defended their current practices.  Uber considered that removing names or photos from a request or even replacing them with codes could create a series of confusions for drivers. The company believes that this may even lead to various forms of accidents like someone pretending to be an Uber driver.

Lyft offered a similar defense to that of Uber, claiming that its drivers only receive the star rating of a client before accepting the request. Afterward, only the first name of the customer is seen by the driver, with photo account being optional and are never seen by drivers in the first place.

Both companies believe that this type of information is not enough to lead to wide-spread discrimination. Furthermore, its benefits outweigh any negatives as it is required to create a digital trust profile.

Experimental Brain Cancer Treatment Is A Success

A new report has shown that this type of treatment can be used for brain cancer too.

An experimental brain cancer treatment has shown promise in the patient who tried it is alive after a year of treatment. This type of treatment was meant for leukemia and lymphomas but now scientists are trying the same treatment for brain cancer.

This treatment involves the immune system that beats cancer on its own. The name of the treatment is named Immunotherapy and it is not tested for prostate, colon, and breast cancer. A new report has shown that this type of treatment can be used for brain cancer too.

The man who tested this experimental brain cancer treatment is a 50-year-old and has glioblastoma, a very aggressive form of brain tumor. This man was treated with radiation, anti-tumor drug therapies, and even surgery. None of these treatments were effective because its cancer came back and it also spread.

The researchers tried this treatment for this man. In order to test this treatment, the researchers extracted immune cells from the man. After that, the researchers engineered the cells to express proteins that would destroy the tumor cells.

The immune cells were injected into the brain. This was the first time that these types of cells were injected into the brain. This can be extremely dangerous and this is why nobody tried this before. After less than 4 months the tumors started to get smaller. After 6 months of the treatment, all tumors disappeared.

“If we can do the same for other patients, that would be an amazing accomplishment that many decades of work and research on glioblastoma have never done,” says Badie, the leader of the study.

The patients did not experience any health problems after the treatment and he has recovered. This is not the only one who participated in this trial. On this trial participated 9 people. All of these people has similar results.

The researchers mentioned that they want to make more tests in order to make sure that this can be used to treat people who have brain cancer. This can be a revolution when it comes to brain cancer because there is little chance of survival for these patients. Let’s hope that the next trials go even better than this one.

Study Tracks Migratory Patterns of Flying Bugs

Flying bugs migrate in numbers over 3 trillion each year in England.

Insects capable of flight also migrate around the world depending the season, similar to birds. However, until now, not much was known regarding their numbers since they are hard to spot and count. Thanks to a new study, south-central England is the site where over 3 trillion flying bugs pass through.

The study which offered a rough approximation of the number of migratory flying bugs across this area in England was published in the journal Science, by a team of researchers led by Jason Chapman, a University of Exeter entomologist.

Chapman states that scientists mostly ignore the migratory patterns of insects, except that of the monarch butterfly, as they focus on more charismatic birds such as the Arctic tern, and others. However, flying bugs deserve being properly studied due to their immense potential of having either a positive or negative impact on the environment.

Chapman also went on to say that due to England’s relatively cold and damp climate, repeating the experiment in other regions of the world would very likely exceed the 3 trillion number of flying bugs found to travel through England.

For their study, the researchers monitored the seasonal migratory patterns of various insects such as the marmalade hoverfly among others. Flying bugs can be especially hard to count, due to their size and the altitudes they fly at. As such, Chapman and his colleagues had to resort to a number of specialized tools like narrow beams of radar which were pointed to the sky to spot bigger insects while using nets attached on small blimps to sample the smaller insects which fly at lower altitudes.

Besides offering an approximate number of insects that migrate throughout the south-central part of England, the researchers also discovered that migration mostly happens during daytime. Noting the lack of similar studies for other regions in the world, Chapman hopes to eventually see an increased interest in the migratory patterns of insects around the planet, as they carry both diseases as well as nutrients with them.

The study provides important data to scientists interest in learning how diseases can appear in regions, even without humans transporting them.
