McDonalds Introduces Happy Goggles VR Headset

March 1, 2016 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

McDonalds VR

McDonalds is introducing – for a limited time only – its very own take on virtual reality headsets and introducing them in the famous Happy Meals menus for kids: the McDonalds VR. However, not all McDonalds restaurants are doing this as so far only the ones in Sweden have adopting bundling these Google Cardboard-like devices into their menu. It’s actually pretty bright as the VR headsets don’t even come separately, but instead can be assembled from the packaging that the meal’s contents come in.

The offer is a one-time thing that only 14 restaurants from Sweden will be offering over the next two weekends, and they also come in a limited number: only 3,500 Happy meal boxes will be made available. This will be done on the occasion of the Swedish recreational holiday known as ‘Sportlov’ when families usually go skiing to celebrate it.

Naturally, along the VR headsets that you can make from the Happy Meal packaging, McDonalds created a skiing VR game named ‘Slope Stars’ that you can start putting the virtual reality gear to use with. The game needs to be downloaded off of the respective application online stores (App Store or Google Play) and can be played without the VR headset too, but naturally, the experience will be enhanced that way.

On the other hand, you can use the McDonalds Happy Goggles with any VR-capable mobile game that you can find in the app stores as it contains everything you would ever need to make it work. The way kids are supposed to transform their Happy Meals into VR devices is by simply tearing and cutting along some marked lines and folding the box in a particular way (instructions included, of course), then inserting in the VR lenses that you can find included in the package as well.

The smartphone that you have to put in the VR headset is your responsibility, however.

The new McDonalds VR package is made in collaboration with the Swedish alpine ski team that officially endorsed the ‘Slope Stars’ VR game. It is not known if Google had anything to do with the headset in question, given the uncanny resemblance, but the McDonalds VR set employs the same kind of construction as the Google Cardboard.

And all you have to do in order to get it – as long as you’re in Sweden the next 2 weeks – is to make sure you get there fast enough to catch one of the 3,500 limited edition packages and be prepared to whip out an extra $4.10 for it.

HTC Vive Pre-orders Start On 29 February, Watch Out Oculus

January 12, 2016 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

HTC Vive Pre-orders Start On 29 February, Watch Out Oculus

HTC Vive pre-orders start on 29 February, watch out Oculus, you’re in a for the fight of your life. Given that virtual reality enthusiasts all over the world were utterly shocked last week upon the news that Palmer Luckey doesn’t know what in the same ballpark means, the HTC Vive might just have the upper hand.

Cher Wang, HTC CEO, has spoken to the Telegraph and said that the company has chosen to shift its focus on virtual reality, and drive away from the smartphone industry, because now, HTC, is more realistic.

HTC has partnered with game maker supreme Valve to design an immersive virtual reality headset. It will sell world-wide starting with April of this year, competing directly with the much-awaited Oculus Rift. Sony’s PlayStation VR is out of the question at the current moment as there is no information available on pricing or release date. What we do know is that Sony has stated, over and over again, that the company will release their virtual reality headset only when they have enough content available – the Japanese company is known for working on more than 100 titles for their VR headset.

For the HTC Vive, Valve will be in charge of the gaming platform with their beloved Steam – as well as offering a place for Oculus Rift lovers.

Even though we have an official pre-order date, we still don’t know what the price of a Vive headset will retail at. Yet, we will have details in the upcoming weeks regarding the cost of a Vive, notes Cher Wang.

But why the sudden shift from the smartphone industry?

Well, because the huge competition from Xiaomi and Apple, with both companies pumping a ton of money on marketing and communications. There are also a lot of other Chinese competitors that offer low-quality devices with staggering specifications, notes the CEO of HTC.

During CES 2016, HTC displayed and demoed their 2nd-gen dev kit, the Vive Pre. Those who were present, were the first to witness the huge difference between the two dev kits.

However, regardless of the change in design, the price needs to meet the expectations of VR enthusiasts across the world so the adoption rate soars, and brands jump on the bandwagon.

You need a powerful PC to run a VR headset. A PC that will make you cough up something between $500 and $1000. Dell’s Alienware has already started offering bundles that shave $200 off the base price of an Oculus Rift, and, Cher Wang says, that HP and Asus will be releasing VR-ready PCs in the upcoming months.

Improved Samsung Gear VR Costs $99, Sells this November

September 26, 2015 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

The new and improved Samsung Gear VR Headset

When Samsung initially released its virtual reality headset for mobile platforms earlier this year, they called it Innovator Edition. Now, the Korean-based company is preparing their product for release – it’s finally consumer-ready!

The new and improved Samsung Gear VR will cost $99 and it will start shipping this November.

The announcement was made on the 24th of September during the Oculus Connect 2 developer conference that took place in Los Angeles. Peter Koo, who is Samsung’s Vice President of Mobile took to the conference’s stage to announce their plans.

This comes right in time for US’s Black Friday event. It will start selling worldwide shortly after its United States debut.

More so, proving that it wants the virtual reality industry to bloom, Samsung is committing to Oculus Rift’s goal – to make VR a mass-market product. That’s the only way to entice VR enthusiasts to buy a headset.

The new and improved Samsung Gear VR will work with all the company’s flagship phones that where released in 2015. This means that if you have recently acquired a Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 and Note 5, you own a VR compatible device.

The new and improved Samsung Gear VR headset can be used with Samsung's 2015 flagship phones

Samsung’s VR headset now sports a 22 percent lighter hardware. Koo notes that this makes the headset more comfortable to use for extended periods of times. Also, the touchpad found in the side of the headset has received a somewhat complete make-over. Yet, Koo didn’t care to talk more about what this actually entails.

Users will have access to an expanding universe of premium content, Koo noted. This, however, is more than confusing, and nobody knows what he is talking about. Will Samsung build a special platform a la Steam for their Gear VR headset?

This sub-$100 price feels like an aggressive strategy to gain dominance over the VR market, which is yet to crown a king. Furthermore, we don’t even have an industry standard at the moment.

Joining the ranks of Google’s Cardboard, Zeiss VR One and DODOcase, the new and improved Samsung Gear VR will most likely be a hit this holiday season.

The new and improved Samsung Gear VR headset comes with its very own controller

Samsung Gear VR headset comes with its very own controller.

A more performance-driven headset will be released at the beginning of 2016. Yes, we are talking about Facebook’s Oculus Rift. But don’t expect Oculus to go under the $100 threshold. Oculus Rift CEO Brendan Iribe has hinted that their device will retail at around $500. Yet, if you want to use their headset you’ll have to use a $1000 machine.

VR is coming strong in 2016 and the mobile platform is one of its key destinations due to its large distribution capabilities.

There’s also a little VR device called Full Dive aimed at emerging markets that is yet to surface. Read our interview with one of Full Dive’s co-founders if you are interested in more details.

A Ton of Games Are Being Developed for Project Morpheus

June 16, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Project Morpheus

Wired has somehow gotten Sony to spill the beans about their Project Morpheus virtual reality headset. It’s going to come out sometime next year, and Sony’s focus is to build a huge library of games.

Sony was supposed to showcase their Project Morpheus and talk about their VR device Monday at their E3 keynote, but it didn’t happen like we expected. Sony just stated that it’s going to be a social event. Fortunately for us, Wired managed to get the president of Sony’s Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida to talk.

” We need to convince PS4 owners to spend several hundred dollars to purchase a Morpheus headset, on top of the PS4 they already have, and more gaming content is what will convince them.”, Shuhei Yoshida has said.

Project Morpheus

Can’t say I disapprove with their view on things, and I actually applaud their stance. When the time comes to look for virtual reality headsets I’ll choose the one that offers a huge library of games, and not just a headset that will allow me to watch movies and surf Facebook – I’m looking at you Oculus Rift, which, hopefully, you won’t become a Facebook VR platform.

Yoshida, and Adam Boyes, who is  Sony VP of publisher and developer relations, said that the company will showcase during E3 almost 20 demos so users can get a taste of what Project Morpheus is all about. Besides ““small indie teams [and] outfits.” as Boyes puts it, Sony will also support development of Horizon: Zero Dawn, a new IP, for their VR device, and a version of Ubisoft’s Trackmania.

“We have 30 or more games being developed that we are tracking — not all of them will come out at launch, but there are serious efforts being made on all of them,” the two have been reported of telling Wired.

Project Morpheus

More so, the two also point out that porting a virtual reality game from Oculus Rift to Project Morpheus may take only about a couple of days, and that the company is trying its best to fully support developers, and make their lives easier.

But can Project Morpheus go against the really popular Facebook-owned Oculus Rift? The VR company just announced its partnership with Microsoft, and Oculus managed to snag a couple of well-known dev companies to release exclusive titles on their platforms – Square Enix, Insomniac Games, Ready at Dawn, amongst others.

And let’s not forget HTC, and Valve’s alliance – can their SteamVR, also known as Vive, manage to get the needed attention from gamers? Valve has announced that they will feature a huge library of games easily downloadable through their Steam platform.

Project Morpheus

I’m going to wait this battle out, and I’m not going to jump head first. I’m more inclined of buying the SteamVR to be honest – Project Morpheus also seems really great. Don’t know what to say about Oculus Rift – since the news that they have been acquired by Facebook has been publicly announced, I’m feeling a little bit sceptical. The might sway me over – the company has announced that they are supporting developers with over $10 million.

Gear VR headset made by Samsung to hit stores today

March 27, 2015 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Gear VR

Best Buy is the first retailer to put Samsung’s Gear VR on shelves starting today – in over 100 stores all around the country. It was available to purchase for a short time earlier this year also, at the price of 199,99$ – we expect the price to remain the same. The official name for the virtual headset is Gear VR Innovator Edition – a model designed specifically for developers, but that doesn’t mean a home user can’t try it out.

If you’re planning on buying one of these bad boys you’ll need to have the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The phablet works as the VR’s eyes and ears – think about it as the screen and processor that helps the VR function properly. The Gear VR was developed using the same software as the Facebook owned Oculus Rift.

Some users have stated that they made the VR headset also work by pairing it with Note Edge, but Samsung doesn’t recommend any tinkering to its hardware, nor software – they do not offer support for any smartphone, or tablet, except the Galaxy Note 4.

Samsung has hinted that the Gear VR Innovator will be also available to Samsung S6, and S6 Edge users – at this moment the company is performing extensive tests regarding the compatibility of the software.

In a strategy to somehow take the spotlight from Oculus Rift, and engulf all of their fan-base, Best Buy will set up demo stations in over 100 stores so potential customers can give it a try before deciding whether or not to buy it.

Virtual Reality headsets can immerse you in a 360° video environment allowing you to explore new alien worlds, sing along on-stage with your favourite performer, watch movies like you are a part of them, and experience a video-game from a complete new perspective.

There are also some warnings regarding the usage of Virtual Reality headsets – some users have reported feeling nauseous, and entering a state of dizziness for a couple of minutes, while wearing the Gear VR Innovator, or other VR devices. Not all owners have reported such problems, and it seems to be random – depending on person to person. Rumours have it that adding a virtual nose, so its users sees it constantly, will alleviate these issues by adding a balance compass.

Is this a trend that will eventually pass? Or are we witnessing the revolution of home entertainment?
