State Judge Orders 72-Hour Shutdown of WhatsApp in Brazil

May 4, 2016 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

The judicial order to interrupt the tremendously popular chat service for 72 hours affected nearly 100 million Brazilians

On Monday afternoon, 100 million Brazilians were declined access to the popular messaging service WhatsApp after one state judge decided to suspend the service for 72 hours. Mobile operators that failed to comply with the ruling risked a fine of $142,000 per day.

But after an emergency appeal, the service was back Tuesday afternoon.

About half of Brazil’s population uses the service. In the South American country, WhatsApp is even more popular than Facebook, which owns the app. About 91 percent of Brazilian phone users use the service to chat for free. Worldwide, 900 million users log in WhatsApp every day.

Judge Marcel Maia Montalvão, who issued the order, has eyed Facebook once more a couple of months ago when he ordered the arrest of the company’s VP for South America, Diego Dzodan, for failing to hand over sensitive information to investigators in a drug-trafficking case.

Dzodan was locked up for 24 hours. But he argued before an appellate court that the encryption used by cell phones didn’t allow Facebook to have access to any communication.

In the wake of the recent ruling, WhatsApp executives said that they cannot hand over information that they currently don’t have. According to a national newspaper, the judicial order to shutdown the service for three full days is related to the same drug-trafficking case.

The deadlock, however, stems from a larger controversy over the appropriateness of the use of end-to-end encryption offered by some tech companies to protect their users’ privacy. When such encryption is set in place, only phone users can read the content of their communication, not the companies themselves.

But the move is not well-tolerated by government agencies that are either involved in criminal investigations or mass surveillance programs. The issue often resulted in nasty PR wars such as the Apple-FBI standoff we all have witnessed last month.

Because of end-to-end encryption, WhatsApp was unable to comply with a subpoena that demanded critical information on specific users of the service. So, the situation led to the judicial order that blocked the service nationwide on Monday.

Around the world, some governments are already taking steps to ban end-to-end encryption from their residents’ mobile phones. The White House, as well, has recently contemplated legislation to create backdoor access in encryption for federal agencies.

Windows Phone and BlackBerry Are Saying Goodbye to WhatsApp

February 29, 2016 By Roxanne Briean 2 Comments

Windows Phone and BlackBerry Are Saying Goodbye to WhatsApp

It has been recently announced by the developer that Windows Phone and BlackBerry are saying goodbye to WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging service that has been released nearly 9 years ago. And it’s not even just that as older Android versions such as 2.2 and beyond as well as Nokia S40 and Nokia Symbian S60 operating systems will also be affected by the change.

This was a decision made by the company when they stated that although back when the app first came out, more than 70 percent of the devices that it ran on were either Nokia or BlackBerry, the current state of affairs does not allow the instant messaging application to expand their list of features on said platforms.

Naturally this only means that the support offered for the application will be discontinued starting with the end of the year 2016. The application will still exist on said mobile operating systems, but will not be receiving any new updates any longer. While it’s not unusual for apps to stop development for older platforms, it came as a surprise when BlackBerry OS 10 was part of the latest announcement.

Hardly an old platform, the decision to stop support for WhatsApp on BlackBerry 10 comes as what is probably the most questionable of all. The reason behind it may be unrelated to the instant messaging app, and instead have something to do with the fact that BlackBerry seems to have been putting a focus on Android as an operating system. Chances are that BlackBerry will no longer be using their native operating system in the phones that they make any longer.

This is bound to create some further problems for BlackBerry as a company, as their decline may continue. Seven years ago, BlackBerry phones represented roughly 70% of the market. Once smartphones started taking over the scene, BlackBerry alternatives lost ground to the point at which now it only holds 1% of the market.

The announcement is a little more problematic for areas of the globe where BlackBerry and other older phone models of the likes are the regular and once support ends for them, it will draw a decrease in WhatsApp users upon itself. South Africa is the best example of the situation: in South Africa, there are 4 million BlackBerry users and the instant messaging application has about 10 million users – most of which are using older phones. And considering that WhatsApp is the most popular application of its kind, the repercussions may be notable to say the least.

WhatsApp Court Ordered 48 Hour Service Shutdown

December 17, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Brazilian Flag And WhatsApp Logo

In another example of controversy and law and social media clashing, the 1st Criminal Court of São Bernardo do Campo located in São Paulo, Brazil, decided yesterday to shutdown WhatsApp’s services in all of Brazil.

This ban will last for 48 hours and has already affected the market standing of Whatsapp against its biggest competitor there, Telegram.

In the first three hours since the shutdown went into effect, 500,000 new Brazilian users signed up for Telegram. After four hours of shutdown in total, the number had swelled to 1,000,000. And soon after jumped to 1,500,000.

Telegram was very pleased by the upheaval and determined to make the best of it.

Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook (which owns WhatsApp) and WhatsApp founder Jan Koum were not so pleased. The latter posted the following on Facebook, and Zuckerberg liked the post:

We are disappointed in the short-sighted decision to cut off access to WhatsApp, a communication tool that so many Brazilians have come to depend on, and sad to see Brazil isolate itself from the rest of the world.

However, the WhatsApp court ordered 48 hour service shutdown isn’t something that came out of the blue. A judicial court order was issued on the 23rd of July, that WhatsApp did not comply with. They received another notification of the order on the 7th of August, when they had still not complied, and were also issued a fine.

Then, yesterday, Judge Sandra Regina Nostre Marques took note that WhatsApp is still not complying so, within the boundaries of the powers she wields under Brazilian law and according to its Internet legislation, ordered the shutdown.

All of the Brazilian phone companies were instructed to block WhatsApp’s texting and Voice Over IP (VOIP) services.

SindiTelebrasil is one of these and has obeyed the order with stringency and zeal.

It comes as no surprise, considering that Brazilian phone companies have kept trying to control companies like WhatsApp and Telegram.

They claim VOIP services are similar to those offered by them and are in fact competition that undermines them.

As such, Brazilian phone companies claim that companies like WhatsApp should be considered telecommunications companies and subjected to Brazilian law, just like SindiTelebrasil and others are.

The staggering fact is that a report shows 93% of the 110,000,000 people using the internet in Brazil used WhatsApp prior to the shutdown.

That’s why there is an economic battle on top of the legal battle, with competitors like Telegram and the Brazilian phone companies respectively, trying to get in on WhatsApp’s action.

Still, the legal battle remains at the core. The Brazilian Network Band News TV claims that the court’s insistence towards the shutdown stems from an investigation focusing on a drug trafficker linked to one of the biggest and most dangerous criminal gangs in São Paulo who used WhatsApp in his dealings.

You Can Now Send WhatsApp Messages With Google Now

Google just announced that users will now be able to dictate and send messages on WhatsApp, Viber and WeChat by using Google Now. The announcement about the latest update was made in a blog post.

Android’s OK Google feature has been around for a while now. The voice assistant helped users perform various tasks like setting a reminder, Googling stuff or calling a friend. The command was pretty straightforward: “OK Google” and you were just a few spoken words away from sending a SMS.

Google Now has built on that and now its users will also be able to send messages via WhatsApp, Viber, WeChat Telegram and NextPlus as long as they dictate in English. Google’s plans include adding more languages and more apps in the neart future.

So how does the magic work? All you have to do is say “OK Google, send a WhatsApp message to Mary” and Google Now will take care of the rest.

You Can Now Send WhatsApp Messages With Google Now

Sending a WhatsApp or Viber message has never been this simple before. The smartphone voice assistant from Google will pick up on your command and ask you to start dictating your message. There’s also a shortcut version that’s a bit more straightforward. Here are the instructions. Just say “OK Google, send a WhatsApp message to Mary: let’s meet tonight” and Google Now will deliver your message in seconds.

If all this sounds good, make sure you have the latest version of the messaging app, the latest Google app and you’re now ready to safely text while you’re driving. In addition it’s bound to save users a lot of time opening the apps and typing up messages.

The privileged Android users are likely to remain the only ones who’ll be able to dictate and send messages on WhatsApp, Viber, WeChat Telegram and NextPlus without opening the apps and typing.

As of January 2015 WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app worldwide, with more than 800 million active users. This came 6 years after the app was launched by Brian Acton and Jan Koum and one year after Facebook bought WhatsApp back in February 2014.

In an attempt to attract even more people and cover more users’ needs at the beginning of 2015 Whatsapp launched a calling feature for Android, iOS and Windows. They also made the app available on web browsers, perfectly mirroring the chats on your mobile phone and vice versa.

We can only imagine Google Now will help WhatsApp increase in popularity and gather even more users in the following months.
