Hawai is more used to preparing for storms than actually getting one. In fact Hawai has only been hit by hurricanes three times since 1950, it has a much higher number for tropical cyclones though; 147. However this time Hurricane Isele is expected to make landfall later this week which could be followed by Tropical Storm Julio potentially making contact a few days later.
Its still not clear how damaging the storms could actually be but it doesn’t seem like Hawai is taking any chances. Stores are committed to re-stocking their bottled water, baby supplies and canned meat supply as soon as streams of shoppers fill their carts.
Scott Ankrom, assistant manager of the Costco said “Days like today, in a situation like this, we just throw open the doors and hold on for the ride.” The busy store has had to restock water continuously and sold as much water on Monday as it sold in all of last week.
Interestingly, in preparation, some people have chosen to vote early in the primary elections which are on Saturday.
