Lenovo Unveils Alexa-Powered Smart Assistant

January 3, 2017 By Deborah Campbell 1 Comment

smart assistant speaker

Lenovo has revealed their new Smart Assistant speaker.

Smart speakers which feature a smart home assistant made waves in 2016 with the launch of Amazon’s Echo and Dot products as well as the Google Home. However, it seems that the market is set to become slightly more crowded as Lenovo, the largest PC maker in the world, has decided to build their own speaker while still using Amazon’s Alexa smart assistant.

Lenovo’s new device has a similar shape to the Amazon Echo but it seems to borrow design aspects from Google Home as well. More specifically, the speakers are covered in a fabric which comes in different colors, orange, gray and black, while the top part of the device features a black or white plastic.

Furthermore, the microphone part of the Lenovo Smart Assistant can also be found on top of the speaker, like the Echo. However, it’s slightly jutting out rather than being covered by more plastic. Lenovo has stated that the design is meant to allow more ventilation for the Intel Atom processor inside the speaker. One last difference from the Echo is that Lenovo’s new device features eight far-field microphones, compared to Amazon’s only seven such microphones.

Despite being smart speakers, it seems that both Amazon and Google focused more on the part of the smart assistant, as the devices have not been regarded as great speakers. This is where Lenovo actually improves on previous systems, by offering a special edition of their new devices which comes with a Harman Kardon speaker.

This edition of the Lenovo Smart Assistant is slightly more expensive, but could very well be worth it if you play a lot of music through the speaker and have a high standard for sound. Lenovo has stated that their speaker will include Amazon’s assistant, known as Alexa, which can also be found in the Echo or Dot devices. Users can set up the speaker using the company’s app for both Android and iOS.

The Lenovo Smart Assistant device will start shipping to customers this year, in May. Interested customers can purchase the standard edition of the speaker for $130, the same price as a Google Home but cheaper than the $180 Echo. However, if prefer a higher sound quality, the Harman Kardon edition will drive you back $180.

In The State That Legalized Marijuana The Number Of Traffic Deaths Decreased

December 31, 2016 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

traffic deaths decline after medicinal marijuana

The report did not prove that there is a link between medicinal marijuana and the decline of traffic deaths.

Legalization of marijuana has been a debating topic for many people. A lot of them believed that only bad things can happen if is legalized. This is not the case since in some states that have legalized marijuana the number of traffic deaths has declined.

Many people believed that the legalization of marijuana is going to cause more traffic deaths but in fact, it did exactly the opposite. In the last 20 years, more than 27 states legalized medicinal marijuana. A new report shows that deaths on average have declined since 1985.

The report analyzed more than 1 million fatalities in the US between 1985 and 2014. The researchers observed that the traffic deaths decreased by more than 11 percent on average since medicinal marijuana was legalized. The decrease was particularly high (12%) when it comes to people aged between 25 and 44.

The authors of the report mentioned that this is a big number. The findings were published in the American Journal of Public Health. One of the authors of the study, Benjamin Hansen, mentioned that public safety is not affected by the legalization of marijuana. He said that access to medicinal marijuana can even improve the public safety.

The authors mentioned that like alcohol, marijuana is a drug and it can affect the ability to drive. This is why people shouldn’t drive under the influence. The report did not prove that there is a link between medicinal marijuana and the decline of traffic deaths.

The authors mentioned that they can’t prove the cause and effect and that they just observed the decline of traffic deaths. The authors also mentioned that people who consume marijuana might be more aware of the fact that they shouldn’t drive after they smoked pot.

The report also shows that for every state the number of deaths caused by traffic was different. For instance, in New Mexico, the decrease was by 17% and then it increased. The authors mentioned that these are just numbers and they can’t prove the link between medicinal marijuana and the number of deaths caused by car accidents.

What is your opinion about the legalization of marijuana and traffic deaths?

Google Changes Algorithm to Exclude Holocaust Denial Sites

December 28, 2016 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Holocaust search

Google removes Holocaust denial sites from top search results.

As the largest and most popular search engine in the world, Google can be an amazing tool for people to learn more about the world, but it can even lead to the spread of propaganda and misinformation if it isn’t adequately managed.

For example, when users search for certain keywords like Holocaust denial, you can expect several authoritative sites showing undisputed evidence of that atrocious historical event. However, there are some sites promoted by groups that either don’t believe the Holocaust happened or they just want people to think that. One such site, Stormfront, supported by Neo-Nazi and supremacist groups was at the top of Google’s search results for Holocaust denial alongside the sites of Jewish museums.

This situation was first reported by the marketing director of the Breman Museum located in Atlanta, Georgia. The museum is paying Google in advertisements fees so that it is promoted among the first search results when people search Holocaust-related terms. However, the Holocaust denial site Stormfront did not pay such fees and it was still the top result despite being a hateful website promoting false information.

The Breman Museum filed a complaint with the company and as a result, Google has made various tweaks to its search algorithm so that other sites similar to Stormfront, which are promoting hate and false facts like the denial of the Holocaust will no longer be shown in the first few pages of the search results. Furthermore, Google has emphasized its search algorithm with offer users more credible content with better quality. It will also take direct actions against non-authoritative sites promoting misinformation.

Google’s current standing regarding this matter has changed since it first came to light. The company initially did not want to take any action, expressing their commitment to a free and open internet. This position was similar to that of Facebook in regards to their fake news controversy. However, facing an increasing amount of backlash, they decided to implement the discussed changes.

At this point, Holocaust denial site, Stormfront is still showing on the first page of the search results, but it’s gradually losing its standing as it takes time for Google’s changes to their search algorithm to have a full effect. The company has also stated that such tweaks can be challenging and it does not always get it right on the first try.

China Launched Carbon-Tracking Satellite

December 22, 2016 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

pollution in Beijing

China has launched its first carbon-tracking satellite.

China is among the countries affected the most by pollution and has been one of the leading supports of climate change initiatives like the Paris Agreement. Recently, it has successfully launched its first carbon-tracking satellite into orbit.

The name of the satellite is TanSat, as “Tan” means carbon in Chinese. It was deployed on top of the country’s Long March 2D booster on Wednesday, December 22nd, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre, located in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia.

The TanSat carbon-tracking satellite was first started in the first months of 2011, and it was initially scheduled to launch at the end of 2015. The satellite passed both the Preliminary Design Review as well as the Critical Design Review. However, Chinese officials did not reveal what led to the series of delays during the Satellite Readiness Review stage. Nonetheless, all hurdles were passed and the satellite has been deployed into Earth’s orbit.

The TanSat project was developed by Chinese Academy of Sciences, and it features two deployable solar arrays which are capable of sustaining it for its three-year-long mission. The satellite’s main purpose is to monitor the global distribution of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. China hopes that the collected data will help scientists better understand the impact of carbon dioxide and its contribution to climate change as well as its variation throughout the seasons.

The satellite will monitor the global levels of carbon every 16 days, with a high degree of accuracy. The data will also be used for a wide range of project in various research fields such as meteorology and oceanography. The launch came after a new study revealed that greenhouse gas emissions have remained stable due to cuts made by China. The country hopes that the new mission will be followed by a further decline in their carbon emissions.

Besides the TanSat satellite, the rocket also launched one high-resolution and two spectrum micro-nano satellites. They are meant to monitor the agriculture and forests in China. The launch of their carbon-tracking satellites makes China the third country to deploy such a satellite into orbit, behind the United States and Japan.

What do you think about China’s carbon-tracking satellite? Should other countries follow suit?

Scientists Discover Sun-Like Star Which Ate Planets

December 19, 2016 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

sun-like star eating planets

Scientists discover a sun-like star which ate some of its planets.

A team of scientists has announced their discovery of a sun-like star which has destroyed some of its own planets. Researchers can use this behavior to determine what could happen to our solar system in the future.

Researchers from the La Silla Observatory in Chile used the 3.6-meter telescope to study a star they found around 300 light-years away from Earth. What makes this sun particularly interesting to observe is that it consumed some of the planets in its system and scientists think it may provide useful data to determine what fate some of the planet’s in our solar system can expect in the future.

Although there isn’t any chance for our sun to start destroying planets, at least not in the near future, scientists hope to use their discovery to learn more about the evolution and life cycles of solar systems. This discovery complement the overall exploration efforts of scientists around the world in their attempt to learn how the universe works.

Scientists discovered the sun-like star named HIP68468 after it was part of a study with the purpose of discovering planets that orbit stars which are very similar to our own sun. Although researchers discover an increasing number of exoplanets, they still haven’t found one that orbits a solar twin which has the same characteristics of our sun in terms of size, luminosity, and color.

The study, which was published in the Astronomy & Astrophysics journal, revealed that it found evidence regarding the existence of a super-Neptune as well as a super-Earth orbiting the sun-like star. The evidence must still be reviewed, but if it’s confirmed then this discovery would mark the first time that scientists have found an Earth-like exoplanet orbiting a solar twin.

The scientists think that star might have consumed some of its planets because a six billion years old star should not have as much lithium as they found it to have. This finding coupled with a number of other elements associated with rocky planets led scientists to conclude that the only explanation must be that it consumed some of its planets.

The research team has emphasized the lack of any immediate danger of our solar system, as the sun is 1.5 billion years younger than HIP68468. They also will continue to monitor 60 solar twins in hopes of finding more Earth-like exoplanets.

Twitch Has Developed Automated Tool To Control Chats

December 14, 2016 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

twitch automated tool

The developers of AutoMod mentioned that the automated tool is not as easy to trick as users believe.

Technology has evolved a lot in the last few years. There are a lot of social media sites and chat rooms on the internet and people are communicating faster than they ever used to. This has caused some problems because people sometimes tend to make comments which are considered sexist or racist.

Manual moderation can’t keep track with these comments and messages and some of them remain on the sites. This is why Twitch has created an automated tool which is going to moderate these comments and posts. The name of the automated tool is AutoMod.

This tool is going to take care of those inappropriate messages. This means that Twitch is not going to rely on users to flag messages; it is going to use this tool to take down the messages much faster. All inapropriate content will be detected by AutoMod and sent to a moderation queue for dismissal or approval.

There are four levels of aggression from which users can choose. These levels are sexual language, identity, profanity, and aggressive speech. The developers of AutoMod mentioned that the automated tool is not as easy to trick as users believe. They also said that this automated tool goes beyond banned word lists and can find the smallest inappropriate content.

“Beyond identifying inappropriate words and phrases, AutoMod can detect potentially inappropriate strings of emotes and other characters or symbols that others could use to evade filtering,” mentioned the developers in a press release.

Other sites have tried to develop automated tools that can detect inappropriate messages or comments but many of those were tricked by users and their comments are still there. This automated tool, developed by Twitch needs to be better and to really detect sexual or aggressive language. Many users will try to trick the automated tool but developers still believe that their tool can’t be fooled by trolls.

The automated tool is now available in English and it can also work in beta form in Czech, Italian, Arabic, Polish, Spanish, Turkish, Portuguese, Korean, and French. Users can turn on this automated tool from their setting page on Twitch.

What is your opinion about AutoMod? Do you think that this tool is going to work?

Scientists Develop Gentle Bot with Human Touch

December 12, 2016 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Gentle Bot hand

Scientists developed a soft robotic hand named Gentle Bot.

A lot of challenges need to be met before robots will become available for consumers. However, thanks to the hard work scientists, the fear that robots can easily harm us with their metal hands will gradually become unfounded. They have developed a robot hand with a human-like touch.

Researchers from the Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, have revealed in their study, published in the journal Science Robotics, that they developed a robot hand with sensitive and soft touch known as the Gentle Bot. The robot hand is able to touch and manipulate fragile items as well as being able to sense their shape and texture.

The lead author of the article, Huichan Zhao, a doctoral candidate in mechanical engineering, has revealed that their Gentle Bot is not using motors to power the joints. Instead, the robot hand is soft and comes equipped with many sensors, both outside and inside it. This invention will allow developers to close the gap between human and robot hands.

A cruder version of the soft robotic technology is already in use in warehouses where they have to handle food and other types of fragile products. The novel aspect of the scientists’ invention is that it is able to handle even more delicate items than ever before. Although the technology requires further research, it holds the potential for various applications in robotics, allowing them to safely interact with humans, as well as in other fields like prosthetics.

Before this invention, robots could only detect the items they were holding if they conducted electricity. Thanks to the technology demonstrated by the Gentle Bot, for the soft robot hand to sense the items, they only need to conduct light. This is due to the fact that the robot hand is equipped stretchy optical waveguides with LEDS built-in. This sensor is able to detect any small alterations in the amount of the light that goes into the device, acting similar to nerves.

The Gentle Bot also has the added benefit of being cheaper to make. Robot hands which rely on light signals rather than electricity can be produced with cheaper materials. This, in turn, could lower the cost of all of its applications, from robots to prosthetics.

Suicidal Thoughts Are Common Among Medical Students

December 8, 2016 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

medical students

The students who are the most affected by depression are medical students.

Students are known for experiencing depression, especially during exams and term papers. The students who are the most affected by depression are medical students. Many other studies before this one proved that students experience depression and even suicidal thoughts.

This new research focused on medical students and the way they feel. They discovered that 1 in 10 med students experience suicidal thoughts and have developed depression. In order to conduct this study, researchers analyzed students from more than 45 countries.

Researchers analyzed different studies that were published since January 1963 up to September 2015. These studies involved almost 130,000 medical students from more than 45 countries. This recent study found that almost 30% of med students experience depression symptoms and more than 10% have suicidal thoughts. These numbers are concerning.

Another thing that is very concerning is the fact that less than 20% of those who were diagnosed with depression followed a treatment. This means that the rest of them ignored the specialist’s advice and continued to experience more depression symptoms.

The researchers mentioned that they were expecting this kind of result because many doctors experience depression even after they finished med school. They mentioned that this is an open secret for med students.

The worst part is that in some of these cases, people even commit suicide because they don’t benefit from any treatment for their condition. Once depression is getting worse, suicidal thoughts appear and after that, people can even commit suicide.

Researchers said that some of the factors that affect medical students are stress and anxiety. Both of them are caused by the fact that medical school is very competitive and people need to work hard in order to finish their studies.

One of the solutions to this problem is to change some things in the curricula of med schools and also change the student evaluation procedure. These small things might help students experience less stress and anxiety during exams.

This study is important because it might be an important step into finding out the cause for the depression that medical residents experience. Medical profesionals mentioned that not only students experience depression, those who graduated feel the same way, too. A study which was published last year showed that more than 25% of new doctors battle depression.

Honda NeuV Concept Car is Capable of Sensing Emotions

December 6, 2016 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Honda NeuV concept car

Honda NeuV concept car comes with an emotion engine for enhanced conversations.

In recent times, tech companies have invested a lot in improving AI technologies to bring their services to a whole other level. With the newest concept car reveal, it seems that Honda is also keen on being part of the upcoming AI revolution. The Honda NeuV is able to sense and understand the emotions of its drivers.

The company describes their product as being an automated EV for commuter equipped with an AI system that they’re calling the “emotion engine” which will be capable of emotions. More specifically, the AI system creates new possibilities of interaction with humans as it will react to owner’s conversations and his emotions. The purpose of the emotion engine is to create a deeper emotional bond with the car.

It seems that for the first time in years, car enthusiasts will finally be justified to say that a car has a specific personality. However, no other details about the full scope and capacity of the emotion engine are available at this moment. The car will officially be revealed at next year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where Honda will very likely release more information about the EV

The Honda NeuV is part of the company’s Cooperative Mobility Ecosystem which hopes to harness the power of AI, big data as well as robotics to enhance and transform the user’s mobility experience. Hopefully, the technology will prove to be more useful than just having a conversational bot in your car.

A car capable of sensing and understanding emotions will very likely prove to be controversial for some customers, especially those concerned about their privacy. Nonetheless, at least the AI will be able to feel some emotions, unlike most people who are left empty when laying eyes on the design of the car, which looks like a box with wheels.

Nonetheless, the Honda NeuV seems to be specifically designed to be small and very lightweight, optimized for people who only use it to commute around the city, being capable of dealing with heavy traffic and parking issues. Hopefully, for Honda, they will be able to turn around the current lack of interest in this type of vehicles.

What do you think about the Honda NeuV?

West Antarctic Ice Sheet Shows Signs of Collapse

November 30, 2016 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

a break in the Antarctica ice

The West Antarctic Ice Sheet shows signs of collapse.

Although the Antarctic Ice Sheet was previously thought not to be as affected by climate change as the Artic, scientists have now revealed that a glacier which bounds the West Antarctic Ice Sheet shows signs of collapse from inside out.

One of the largest bodies of ice in the Antarctica, the Pine Island Glacier is showing the first signs of wear caused by the increase in global temperatures.  Back in 2015, a large part of the iceberg measuring 225 square miles, broke off from the glacier and started to drift away.

Now, while testing a new imaging software, researchers found that the large break off started around 20 miles inland instead at happening on the edge of the glacier, where normally the structure is the weakest. Scientists believe that this is evidence of deep rift beneath the surface caused by the warming of the ocean. Additionally, the speculate that it only lead to more often and greater breaks in the next years.

The leader of the research team and the main author of the study published this Monday in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, Ian Howat, has emphasized the unusual fact that the rift happened in the center of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and then propagated towards the edges. He speculates that the main cause of this phenomenon is the fact that a crevasse has been melted at the bedrock level of the glacier because of increased temperature of the ocean.

This study seems to strengthen the findings of other similar studies which suggested that the West Antarctica Ice Sheet could collapse in the next century. As Antarctica contains more than 50 percent of the world’s fresh water in the form of ice, its melting would mean a potential rise in sea level of up to 10 feet. Such a drastic increase from Antarctica alone could prove devastating for many coastal cities in the US and around the world.

Scientists have clearly stated that the melting of the West Antarctica Ice Sheet is now inevitable, the only question remains is when it will happen. Studying the early signs of the rift could help us better understand when a catastrophic breakdown of the ice sheet is likely to happen. Unfortunately, we would not be able to stop it in any way.
