Nutella Ingredient May Cause Cancer, Company Disputes Study

January 13, 2017 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

A Nutella ingredient may cause cancer if processed at hight temperatures.

Although the internet’s adoration for Nutella seems to have died down slightly, a new study issued by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reveals that a key ingredient in the popular product, palm oil, may cause cancer in certain conditions.

According to EFSA study, palm oil, a widely used chemical in the food industry as well as an essential Nutella ingredient can become carcinogenic when it is processed at high temperatures of around 200 degrees Celsius.

More specifically, the EFSA study reveals that the highest amounts of known carcinogens such as the glycidyl fatty acid esters (GE), 2-monochloropropanediol (2-MCPD), and 3-monochloropropanediol (3-MCPD) were found in processed vegetable oils. Furthermore, they were present in higher concentrations in palm oils and palm fats.

Although the study did not specifically mention Nutella, as they only referred to margarine, cakes, and pastries as possible sources of contact with those substances for small children. However, one glance at the ingredient label and you can find out that the controversial palm oil is indeed a Nutella ingredient.

Following the findings of the study, several supermarkets in Italy decided to pull the popular product from their shelves. The company that produced Nutella is based in Italy and is known as Ferrero has taken a public stance against the claims it can cause cancer.

It several posts about their product and the recent controversy, the company sought to assure their consumers that the product is safe for consumption by stating the way they use palm oil to produce Nutella does not lead to the formation of the carcinogens in question. The EFSA study did not make any recommendations regarding the consumption of Nutella, as more research is required to assess the risk.

However, palm oil is affected by a number of other controversies such as farmers in Indonesia burning down large swaths of forest to plant more palm trees from whose fruits the oil is produced. Being the cheapest oil on the market at $800 a ton compared to $845 for sunflower oil is used at a large scale in the food industry. As such, Ferrero even defended its use of palm oil, in general, stating it gives Nutella it’s distinct texture and taste, unlike any other type of vegetable oil.

Amazon has quietly acquired Harvest.ai security startup

Big tech companies acquire startups quite often, with some purchases being more publicized than others depending on the stakes of the transaction or the popularity of the companies involve. The newest acquisition in the tech industry comes from Amazon which seeks to increase its protection systems through the Harvest.ai security startup.

Although the acquisition was not publicly revealed, Techcrunch was able to obtain some of the details of the deal.  According to them, Amazon acquired the Harvest.ai security startup for $19 million, which is considerably more than the $2.3 million that the company managed to attract as seed funding.

The startup was initially based in San Diego, and was funded in 2014 by a team which includes even two former NSA employees, and has a total of 12 employees, which will be relocating to Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle. Before the acquisition, Harvest.ai used artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms in order to analyze the behavior of users in correlation with a company’s key IP as a way to identify and stop attacks before manage to steal customer data.

Although neither Amazon nor Harvest.ai issued any statements or comments on the acquisition, refusing to answer any of Techcrunch’s inquiries, there are considerable signs that the deal has been already finalized, such as information posted by employees and third-party companies regarding the status of the startup.

Harvest.ai’s main AI product still has a patent pending and its known as MACIE Analytics. It mainly uses AI system to monitor how a company’s intellectual property is accessed by customers in real-time. The AI is able to determine what every user is accessing, moving, or copying specific documents. It can even determine where and when they are doing this kind of operations. These AI systems are meant to identify suspicious behavior in order to prevent data breaches and leaks.

The MACIE Analytics is able to integrate with both cloud as well as on-premise system, where it starts to examine various patterns of logins, access to documents and overall data, and remote network access to determine any possible sources of attacks. Thus, it is very likely that Harvest.ai will be tasked with increasing the security of Amazon’s cloud platform.

WIPP Workers Will Resume Depositing Waste Underground

January 5, 2017 By Kenneth Scott 1 Comment

WIPP workers will resume depositing nuclear waste underground after the repository was shut down.

WIPP or the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant workers will resume depositing nuclear waste underground after the repository was shut down for almost three years.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant or WIPP is the third deep geological repository in the world. It is situated in New Mexico, the nearest town being Carlsbad.

WIPP has received a license for permanently disposing of transuranic radioactive waste. The period is set for 10,000 years. Such waste is the byproduct of nuclear weapons production and research.

Back in 2014, the repository had to face some issues. It had to deal with the ever-increasing backlog of toxic waste. Some also questioned the repository’s safety.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant experienced a series of incidents. As a radiation source was discovered, the plant was shut down. The source of the respective issue was detected.

Although it has since been resolved, the WIPP remained closed off for almost 3 years. However, news about the repository was released.

On Wednesday, the United States Department of Energy issued a statement. It announced that the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant will be resuming its activity. More exactly, it has resumed depositing nuclear waste in the underground.

The U.S. Department of Energy is the owner of the WIPP. In February 2014, the department decided to shut down the repository. Its decision came after two main incidents.

February 2014 saw an underground truck fire. It also had to face a waste drum leak. This latter burst and released radiations. The problem and reason behind this latter problem were determined to have been caused by improper packing.

Last month, the Department of Energy cleared the repository operation to reopen. The Department contracts the Nuclear Waste Partners so as to operate the WIPP.

According to media reports, the first pallets have already been deposited. Reports state that two pallets were placed in one of the repository’s underground rooms. The two pallets were reported as being low-level radioactive waste drums.

Rick Fuentes went to offer details. He is an onsite waste handler and union president. According to him, the drum transfer went well. Said drums were moved from a storage building situated above ground.

They were then transferred to one of the WIPP’s underground chambers. The drums were already stored on site. They had reportedly been awaiting underground placement since the repository’s shutdown.

For the moment, WIPP workers will resume depositing onsite waste. Other waste shipments remain on hold. Defense sites and national laboratories also used the plant. However, it remains to be seen if shipments from said sources will be resumed.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant will be officially reopened on Monday. A ribbon-cutting event will take place. U.S. Energy Secretary, Ernest Moniz, as well as other officials, are expected to participate.

WIPP has seen a number of repairs over the past year. Workers have reportedly taken to resolving a number of issues. As such, fire safety issues were addressed. Falling rock problems and comprised air flow issues were also taken into account.

The repository is used to store several transuranic waste products. More exactly, it deposits potentially contaminated gloves, tool, or other similar materials.

These are the result of decades of work involving the development of nuclear weapons. This waste is stored in thick, salt-rock beds. As such, it is deposited about 2,150 feet below ground.

Malware Files Sent on WhatsApp Steal User Info

January 4, 2017 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

WhatsApp icon

WhatsApp users should be wary of Excel malware files.

Android is the most versatile mobile operating system as it is able to run any type of file users might need. However, this very functionality can pose a security risk. This was the case where several WhatsApp users received malware files on the platform.

The malware files come in the form of fake Microsoft Excel documents which seem to be issued by the National Defense Agency or the National Investigation Agency. These organizations are part of the Indian government. If downloaded and opened on a user’s device, the documents trigger the installation of a malware.

This hidden malware is then able to collect all sort of user info like various app privileges and information, thus gaining control of the user’s device. From there, it’s even able to collect banking information as well as your passwords, depending on the type of activities you have used your phone for and what apps you have installed.

The recent reports which revealed the existence of this new exploit also stated that the two fake files are most commonly titled as “NIA-selection-order.xls” and “NDA-ranked-8th-toughest-College-in-the-world-to-get-into.xls”. Keep a look out for these names or any other suspicious and unrelated Excel files or anything that you didn’t expect to receive.

It’s also important to remember that the malware activates and begins to steal information as soon as you click the files in order to either download them, view them or edit them in any manner. This cannot be avoided no matter in what app you are trying to open the specified files. Many users have speculated that the malware files were intended for individuals who are actually part of the military or the government, or even those interested in international relations. However, nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

The malware has already been reported to government officials, but it’s very likely to continue to spread to unsuspecting WhatsApp users. Security experts also issued a warning stating that in these types of cases, other hackers could develop copycat malware which has the same function and be transmitted through the same method. As such, it’s recommended to maintain a state of permanent vigilance regarding the files you get, if you’re not keen on installing an antivirus app.

Hyundai’s Next-Gen Fuel Cell SUV Features a 348 Miles Range

January 1, 2017 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

a white Hyundai Tucson

Hyundai’s next-gen fuel cell SUV will have a range of 348 miles.

The auto industry’s efforts in creating more ecologically-friendly cars are focused on the development and improvement of either full electric cars or that of the hydrogen-powered fuel cell. Although many companies have fully embraced the development of better electric cars and their batteries, other companies placed their bets on the success of hydrogen fuel cells.

One such company is Hyundai, which released its first hydrogen-powered car back in 2014, equipped with the Hyundai Tucson Fuell Cell.  Although it was a commendable effort by the company, the range of the car was eclipsed by other similar offers from Honda or Toyota. However, it seems instead of calling it quits, Hyundai has been hard at work developing their next generation of hydrogen fuel cell.

According to a new report from Motor Trend, the company is currently in the process of completing a new generation of fuel cells for SUVs, which will be capable of increasing the range of the company’s car by up to 30 percent. This translates into a max range of 348 miles on single charge.

Although this new fuel cell will put Hyundai ahead of its competitors like Honda’s Clarity Fuel Cell which has a range of 366 miles or the Toyota Mirai offering 312 miles. The range of hydrogen-powered cars is more important than on electric cars due to its undeveloped infrastructure, an issue which electric car manufacturers have addressed over the years, at least in the United States, like Tesla’s network of Supercharger stations.

Despite the buzz generated by Hyundai’s new fuel cell, the report reveals that the technology will only be available starting with January 2018, with an official reveal to happen sometime in 2017, as well as details regarding its price and marketing. The report places the SUV equipped with the second-generation hydrogen fuel cell at around $50,000. However, it’s unclear whether or not the company will keep the leasing program it currently has in place for their Tucson SUV in the US.

Furthermore, as promising as Hyundai’s new fuel cell sounds, it could once again be eclipsed by its competitors, if they manage to develop similar improvements in their fuel cell technology. Especially so, if they will release it around the same period.

Women’s Brain Changes During Pregnancy

December 23, 2016 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

Women’s brain experiences several changes during pregnancy.

Pregnancy is among the most drastic changes experienced by a woman’s body. However, a new study revealed that during this process, that besides the body, a woman’s brain also experience changes which can change her outlook on motherhood and the intentions of other people.

According to a new study recently published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, pregnancy changes the size as well as the structure of several regions in the brain which are responsible for a person’s understanding of feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and even the intentions of others.

During their extensive analysis, researchers discovered that the women who scored higher on a test regarding the strength of their maternal bonds also experienced the highest degree of changes in the brain during their pregnancy. The brain changes can even last at least two years after birth.

Elseline Hoekzema, the coauthor of study as well as a senior brain scientist at the Leiden University, Netherlands, revealed that they haven’t investigated the overall extent of the changes for a longer period than two years.

Dr. Hoekzema noted that the brain changes experience during pregnancy can last in laboratory mice until old age. However, at this point, it isn’t entirely clear if women experience these changes for such a long period. As such, more research is required to determine the overall impact of pregnancy on a woman’s brain and her outlook on life and relationships.

For their study, the researchers included 25 women who were ready to become mothers for the first time, as well as 19 of their male partners. Both groups underwent high-resolution MRI brain scans before conception.  The researchers scanned the brain of the participants again after giving birth, as well as 20 new women who had never given birth, and 17 of their male partners.

The brain scans revealed that the new mother experienced a significant loss of gray matter in several areas of the brain, which are commonly associated with emotional intelligence, and general social cognition. Scientists were immediately able to detect the brain changes, but they are uncertain on how to interpret them. Scientists are torn between the benefits of brain changes during pregnancy with the potential negative effects of losing gray matter.

Facebook Launches Colored Backgrounds for Status Updates

December 20, 2016 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

Facebook logo on screen

Facebook is currently rolling out a new colored backgrounds feature for status updates.

Although Facebook believes that the future communication will be centered around video mediums, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the service is ready to completely abandon traditional text as a way to lets user express themselves. Quite the contrary, Facebook keeps adding various features for text messages in hopes of getting people to be more active on the platform.

For this purpose, Facebook latest feature is a new customization option which enables users to change the color of the background for status updates. This colored backgrounds feature was first spotted by TechCrunch and it was later confirmed by Facebook.

The colored backgrounds customization options will allow users to choose from several different colors so that their status update can be complemented by the feeling of the color they have chosen. Users can choose between yellow, red, purple, orange, a number of blue variations and more. Facebook also implemented some more advanced customization options for the feature such as a color gradient, which might seem more appealing than just the flat options.

Unfortunately, the new colored backgrounds feature won’t be available to everyone at the start. Facebook will gradually release them for Android users at first. However, the status updates with color backgrounds posted by Android users can be seen on both the desktop platform as well as on iOS.

The new feature seems to be a way for Facebook to incentivize sharing user-generated content with other users.  Earlier this year, an internal report revealed that the sharing of personal Facebook posts and content has gradually declined by 21 percent each year since mid-2015. Instead of personal posts, Facebook users have increasingly shared and posted links to a wide range of external content.

It is surprising to see a new feature for status updates, especially since Facebook has been mainly focused on promoting their Live video feature as well as prioritizing the new format of its News Feed. This lines up with Facebook’s estimates that by 2021, video content will generate around 70 percent of traffic on the platform across all devices.

Depending on how the new colored backgrounds feature is, Facebook may very well start implementing a new feature for text-based communication, instead of focusing all their efforts on video.

Exoplanet has Clouds Made of Vaporized Jewels

December 13, 2016 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

bright orange exoplanet

Gas giant exoplanet has clouds made of vaporized jewels.

When you consider how vast the Universe really is, then the possibilities for various scenarios and extreme or just weird conditions on planets are likely to be discovered by scientists. One such strange discovery is that of a giant exoplanet with extreme weather conditions and clouds made of vaporized jewels.

Scientists analyzing data provided by NASA’s Kepler space telescope have discovered a huge alien planet. What makes it particularly interesting is that it has powerful winds consisting in bright clouds made from various types of vaporized jewels formed due to the high temperatures.

The exoplanet named HAT-P-7b has been under extensive observation between 2009 and 2013. Scientists conducted several studies regarding the strange conditions of the planet and determined that it is 40 percent bigger than Jupiter while being around 1,040 light-years away from Earth.  Researchers observed that the planet completes a trip around its star every 2.2 Earth-days and has an average temperature of 4,180 degrees Celsius.

A fascinating aspect of the exoplanet is its clouds. They are mainly composed of corundum which is a material that forms sapphires and rubies. Corundum is also a colorless material which condenses at temperatures found on the day side of the planet. However, scientists are more excited that they have discovered another gas giant with weather outside our solar system.

The lead author of the study, David Armstrong, from the University of Warwick, England has stated that their results show how strong winds circle around the planet and transport its unique clouds to the day side from its night side. The speeds of the winds can change dramatically which leads to huge cloud formations that eventually dissipate. This phenomenon is what causes the high brightness of the planet which can be visually stunning when viewed from up close.

Based on the amount of light reflected over time, scientists determined that the exoplanet presents evidence of an atmosphere. However, since the planet is just a gas giant it does not have any land which makes it unsuitable for human exploration in the future. The scientists’ study was published in the journal Nature Astronomy on December 12, 2016.

What do you think about the discovery of this planet with clouds of vaporized jewels?

Pandora Premium Music App Announced for Early Next Year

December 7, 2016 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

Pandora music app

Pandora Premium has been announced for $10 a month.

It seems that the already crowded market of music streaming apps continues to grow. One year after Pandora bought what was left of Rdio, the company has recently unveiled their newest app, Pandora Premium. The company’s vision on what an on-demand music streaming service should be will be competing with apps like Spotify, Apple Music, which offer a similar service at the same price, but with more features.

Although the basic features of Pandora Premium such as ad-free streaming for an extensive library of music available anytime, and the option to save your music offline, can be found in all similar apps, Pandora Premium sets itself apart from competitors through personalization.

For example, one of the best features of Pandora’s app is the ability to automatically add similar songs to your playlist, just by tapping a button. Another great feature is the personalized search, which will provide results based on your listening history. It will take your preferences and music tastes more seriously than any other service. In the browse section as well as in the new release section, you will only find music tailored to your tastes.

A cool personalized feature of the intuitive, sleek and clean design of Pandora Premium is the ability to change the artwork based on what music you are playing. Additionally, the app will include all your prefer preferred music and radio stations familiar to the current Pandora users.

Pandora Premium will be available for both Android and iOS users during the early stages of 2017 and will feature a $10 per month subscription service. This is very similar to its competitors such as Apple Music, and Spotify. Despite the market being quite crowded, the company hopes to achieve a number of 11 million subscribers by 2020.

Pandora already has almost 80 million users on its ad-supported version and it hopes to convert at least 20 percent of those users to paying subscribers. Their estimates are cautious since Spotify manages to convert around 25 percent of its users. However, there have been companies who were not able to make a successful transition to a paid service, such as Soundcloud who had 125 million free users before.

Are you currently using Pandora? If so, are you planning on getting a subscription?

Parkinson’s Disease Linked to Gut Bacteria

December 3, 2016 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

representation of the link between gut bacteria and brain disorders

Scientists link gut bacteria to Parkinson’s disease symptoms.

A recent study has discovered an indirect link between the various form of gut bacteria and the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. The study was recently published in the journal Cell and it suggests that the disease may very well begin in our digestive systems.

Parkinson’s disease, which causes tremors and stiffness as well as several digestive issues, was long thought to be caused by high concentrations of protein in our brain. However, the new study has shown that administering mice with microbes taken from Parkinson patients, worsened the animals’ symptoms. This was not the case they researchers used samples from healthy people.

The team of researchers from the California Institute of Technology was led by Sarkis Mazmanian, decided to act based on previous studies which revealed that the gut bacteria of people suffering from Parkinson looked different than that of healthy individuals. More specifically, there are even certain classes of bacteria which were either missing or depleted from patients with Parkinson’s.

This has led the researchers to think that the gut bacteria may somehow be linked to the disease. Their experiments used genetical identical mice so that the only variable was the gut bacteria. Their findings revealed that gut bacteria do indeed regulate and are even required for the various symptoms of Parkinson’s.

Although the researchers are not entirely clear on how the bacteria affects the development of Parkinson’s, their findings do strengthen the emerging research which reveals that certain brain disorders may also be influenced by bacteria in our digestive systems.

If future research does indeed prove a direct connection between Parkinson’s and gut bacteria, then researchers are very optimistic about a possible treatment as getting drugs into the gut is much simpler than getting them to the brain. Mazmanian has also founded a company known as Axial Biotherapeutics, meant to explore any possible treatments through this link.

Researchers studying gut bacteria have not been able to classify them all, and determining which exact ones influence the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease might prove even more difficult. Companies that sell probiotics claiming to cure a range of disease have no solid proof to back up their claims, and if they have helped anyone it was very likely that it only by chance.
