FPS LawBreakers Breaks the Moon and Shatters the World

August 30, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

LawBreakers multiplayer-oriented FPS

Nope, LawBreakers isn’t your average post-apocalyptic first person shooter.

It’s just a plain shooter, but don’t let this fool you into thinking that it’s borderline average. We’re talking about Cliff Bleszinski here, the dev genius who brought us Unreal Tournament and Gears of War.

LB takes place in the future, and players will be in charge of a group of Marines. These space-marines have one goal in mind – to gun down villains in the name of justice.

This may seem like your average futuristic plot-line, but Bleszinski assures us it isn’t. LawBreakers is set in a post-catastrophe world where our Earth is in pieces because someone shattered the Moon through countless experiments. When I say someone, I imply humans – we are stupid little creatures.

So, after humanity breaks the moon, we start rebuilding, better and bigger. Violent groups take wind of this and the possibility of owning Terra. Attacks on the new world are frequent and visceral.

These LawBreakers are the only safeguard humanity has against vicious gangs. They are embedded with super-human supplements, and their training consists of vast periods of time spent in low-gravity zones. Basically, they are bad ass!

LawBreakers Logo

LawBreakers will be a free shooter that includes RPG-elements. It’s clearly inspired from TitanFall and the unreleased Battleborn. It’s multiplayer-oriented, and based on classes. It’s set to launch sometime in 2016. At the current moment, we don’t know on which platforms it will be available.

Classes will have unique abilities. Let’s take the assassin. He’s able to double jump, among other things – Bleszinski showcased it on a Twitch Live Stream.

The game world is a stew of old and new, with various timey references set in a modern, dystopic medium.

The US government has to sell parcels of national land because it went bankrupt during the cataclysm. The highest bidder is always the favorite. This way, Yakuza bought land near the edge of the Grand Canyon and set up shop – a criminal network shop.

Hard to reach, easily defendable and surrounded by rocks floating in low-gravity zones, the Yakuza HQ is one secure modern fortress.

Here’s the cinematic trailer that shows Terra attacked by stars and its inhabitants alike.

Introducing YouTube Gaming, Twitch’s Competitor

August 29, 2015 By Michael Turner Leave a Comment

YouTube Gaming Launched by Google

YouTube Gaming is Twitch’s main competitor. YouTube was already a big player, but Google doesn’t want it to become old and stale. The big G, starting with the 26th of August, has begun promoting YouTube Gaming as a separate dedicated website and app aimed at, go figure, gaming.

Users who want Call of Duty search results won’t have to go through Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe.

Yet, this wasn’t the main problem.

Esports popularity has grown tremendously over the past five years and Twitch was the main hub for it. Google can’t let this happen. If they succeed in their endeavor, if the company manages to separate different gaming content, they can rest assured that people will use it.

If you build it, they will come.

YouTube Gaming - Lui Calibre

Lui Calibre, whose site has 3.5 million subscribers, holds a cookie in the shape of the YouTube Gaming App’s heart logo. Photo: Susan Karlin.

YouTube Gaming resembles Netflix when it comes to watching a stream. It stays true to it roots, but you won’t notice the vanilla components that made the video service popular. Comments can be seen on the side, you can give a streamer either a thumbs-up or a thumbs-down and you can subscribe to their channel.

It’s really not that hard to use, and I’m inclined to think that the main YouTube page would benefit from looking like this.

The biggest difference lies in its essence. It’s gaming-oriented. There’s a list where you can see what games are trending, there are featured channels, and there are even landing pages for certain games.

Results are divided into categories like live shows, popular videos and pre-recorded Let’s Play vids.

The Android app looks a lot like Twitch’s, but its desktop counterpart is more fine-detailed. It looks sleeker, better organized and easier to use.

YouTube Gaming Android App

But this isn’t how you poach users from Twitch. Better features and great content creators will, however. The benefit of rewinding a stream in case you’ve missed its beginning is definitely a start.

Currently, Twitch’s most viewed channel racks-up approximately 32,000 viewers. YouTube’s most popular channel has around 11,000 – these may be users who are just trying out the service. Also, because YouTube features channels on its front page.

People don’t think of YouTube as a live streaming hub, but they’re starting to.

YouTube Gaming - PewDiePie Content Creator

Felix Kjellberg aka PewDiePie

Let’s take PewDiePie. He’s a huge part of YouTube and YouTube Gaming. He creates content especially for the video service. Because he uses Google’s video platform as his second home, he keeps people coming back.

If Felix Kjellberg decides to leave for Twitch, the majority of his fan-base will leave along with him. I’m curious to see if dividing YouTube in two will be worthwhile for Google, or if it’s a big mistake.

What do you think? Is Google making a mistake? Will Twitch reign supreme? Tell us in the comments section down below.

Alienware Rolls Out 4 Gaming Laptops And X51 Desktop

August 28, 2015 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Alienware Rolls Out 4 Gaming Laptops And X51 Desktop

The in-house PC gaming brand owned by Dell has just made it public that they will be updating some of their devices. The announcement took place at the PAX Prime gaming convention that is held annually in Seattle. The gaming PCs include 4 gaming laptops and one desktop.

Alienware stated they are not putting out new designs, but rather enhancing their existing products. Alienware X51 is a desktop that is famous among professional gamers who require full power systems for touring.

X51 is getting a boost and jumps straight to the sixth generation Core i5 and Core i7. We can also expect faster DDR4-rated RAM. More news about Alienware’s 4 Gaming Laptops is expected from the IFA tech trade that will be held in Berlin in a week.

Another cool feature the new X51 promises is an optional liquid cooling. This translates into a combination of a pump and a radiator in a single device.

Alienware Rolls Out 4 Gaming Laptops And X51 Desktop

The design of the new X51 won’t blend in with your decor, but it promises a lot of high end features. The device is matte black with a green strip on the sides. The inside space is limited, so the CD drive has been sacrificed and expelled from the new model. But instead users get a removable tray for the GPU to compensate for that.

X51 R3 will be compatible with its Graphics Amplifier. However, before you go all out and buy yourself one of those, you should keep in mind that the amplifier is half as big as X51. Kind of a turn off, to be honest.

With two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports, built in 802.11ac Wi-Fi, 8GB of RAM and a CPU liquid cooler, Alienware seems to have worked hard to please the gamers’ niche and meet their demanding requirements. But have they succeeded?

Alienware Rolls Out 4 Gaming Laptops And X51 Desktop

What do early verdicts predict? We can’t deny the updated features are pretty attractive. However, this would be a wise choice only if you were specifically looking for a small gaming PC.

Props to the clever cooling solution as well. Alienware hit the nail on the head with that one. But the additional costs of a buying a separate graphics amplifier and also an external graphics card fail to fully justify this purchase.

If you’re a gaming enthusiast with a liking for small PCs and you want a sleek frame, the X51 R3 meets most of the expectations but leaves some space for improvement.

Facebook M stands for Mediocre or Mistake, You Pick

August 28, 2015 By Karen Jackson 1 Comment

Facebook M

Facebook M has been unveiled yesterday. It’s a personal assistant currently in beta, and it’s being tested by about 200 totally random users in the Bay Area. Facebook M is quite unique, mainly because it employs human power. These trainers-of-the-M are capable of completing real day to day activities like buying an item or making a reservation.

We don’t know what the M will turn into, what we do know is that it won’t be your run of the mill personal assistant. Well, if it’s different it should be better, right?

Well, not exactly.

Digital assistants are pretty weak at the moment. Regardless, they are forced upon consumers. M seems to be a different kind of beast – seems to be. At the dawn of this millennium, when flip phones where introduced to voice control, people where in awe. It ended up being a gimmick that you could show off and laugh in its face.

Technology is growing exponentially, and tech industry behemoths are trying to revive it. It does have tremendous potential, but Facebook M will be found inside the Messenger app and it will be text-based. This is a huge mistake.

Why?

Cortana, Google Now and Siri are personal assistants, but they are quite different from one another. The only common ground is that all three of them live in their own ecosystem. Highly popular ecosystems which we carry on a daily basis.

Zuckerberg’s M doesn’t have its own home. Unless Facebook is planning on unveiling their own OS anytime soon, it’s not going to have it in the near future. Digital assistants need their own hardware in order to be fully integrated, and subsequently useful.

Facebook M

There are too many steps a user has to make to get to M. But, if they play their cards right, Facebook might just hit gold. The Messenger App is installed on almost every smartphone on the planet. Zuckerberg just announced via Facebook that on the 24th of August 2015, a Monday, one out of seven people tuned into the social media platform.

That’s approximately 1 billion people.

Facebook is looking a little bit naive with their promos. In the screenshot below, someone asks M what is the best burger joint in Chicago, and the DA replies with a link. Why would you need to use something else when you already have Google?

Facebook M

M stands for Mistake

Why would you use M in the first place? You need to type sentences in the Messenger App, coherent sentences mind you, so Facebook M understands what you are asking. You could just type keywords in Google and get the desired info.

If there’s a problem with the reservation then you either have to a) type more messages, or b) call the restaurant yourself. Why not do this in the first place without going through all this hassle?

Text-based is confusing, and more so annoying as hell. Phrases can be misinterpreted, and ladies, we’ve all had a ton of text-based fights with boyfriends or girlfriends. It’s not a pretty sight.

Meet Rolly, The First Rollable Keyboard By LG

Meet Rolly, The First Rollable Keyboard By LG

The official description of the product we’ve all been craving for is here and has us fangirling over LG’s solid “roll it yourself” keyboard. LG knows what most tablet and smartphone users lack: space. So they’ve been working on a rollable keyboard that compacts into a stick when you don’t use it.

The wireless portable keyboard‘s announcement took place before the German tech show, IFA, which will start on September 4th in Berlin. After the model will be officially unveiled and launched, the gadget will be ready to hit the shelves in the US, Europe, Latam and Asia.

LG has been known for their home appliances, but in recent years they’ve been focusing on smartphones and tablets as well. Their latest release, the rollable keyboard, will be made from impact resistant polycarbonate and plastic.

When unfolded, it will have four rows of keys and two foldable arms at the top edge that will support your smartphone or your tablet.

Meet Rolly, The First Rollable Keyboard By LG

With a single AAA battery and Bluetooth 3.0, Rolly should keep you powered up for a maximum of three months. After it’s unrolled from its stick shape it is automatically enabled for auto pairing.

The full sized QWERTY keyboard will save up on storage and portability so you can say good bye to straining your eyes and fingertips to type on your tablet.

LG didn’t compromise on size too much. While regular keyboards having 18 mm, Rolly’s keys will be 17 mm. We’re still in the dark about its costs, but that’s really overshadowed by the thought that this rollable keyboard will fit in a purse or a bag.

According to LG, their purpose was to design an item that would enhance LG smartphones and tablets without sacrificing the looks or feel. Following this goal, they didn’t create a mere silicone keyboard, but went for physical keys that would withstand even the most furious typist.

Meet Rolly, The First Rollable Keyboard By LG

Although the rollable keyboard lacks a row entirely dedicated to numbers, LG promises the key pitch will give you the satisfaction of a full fledged keyboard.

Rolly will also be able to connect to two devices at once. Pressing a special button on the keyboard will help you switch back and forth between the devices.

LG has even bigger plans for the future: there have been talks about some other mobile accessories. With a start like this, we’re setting high expectations for LG, who’d better live up to their reputation and deliver other top notch devices like the Rolly.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015 Review

August 27, 2015 By Kenneth Scott 1 Comment

The Third Gen Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015

Not that many laptop brands have lasted as long as Lenovo’s ThinkPad product-line. Its success has led to Lenovo hybrids and Ultrabooks. The company’s latest laptop, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015, is a flag-ship Ultrabook which sports a superb design wrapped around a magnesium alloy and carbon fibre build.

The third iteration to bear the name Carbon follows the 2012 and 2014 releases. Lenovo doesn’t just staple the Carbon name onto the same old rehashed device. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon competes with top-of-the-shelf laptops from Apple and Dell. It’s also more business oriented and it comes packed with an extended warranty, vPro and TPM.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Review

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015 Third Gen Model

It has a high-resolution, top-notch screen, with an excellent and comfortable keyboard, it’s lightweight sporting a beautiful exterior design, and the three year warranty is just the bomb.

The thing is, for the $1,900 price tag, it isn’t the best one in its price range. Battery life is great, but it gets beaten elsewhere, it’s bigger and heavier than its rival, and because it’s so business oriented it makes Lenovo pump up the price a bit.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Design and Build Quality

New Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015 Model

It’s beautiful and sleek, with a powerful vibe to it. It comes with a matte black finish, a red trackpoint and a diagonal retro logo. It shouts ThinkPad from its every screw.

The Carbon stays true to its ThinkPad origins and the machine favors being practical over little gimmicks. Dedicated buttons have been augmented onto the trackpoint and the capacitive functions keys are now binned, featuring more practical physical keys. It’s something that we would have just loved for the second gen 2014 model. It’s a nice addition, more so considering that Lenovo has clearly been listening to its community.

The machine is built out of high-quality materials, there is no doubt here. But Lenovo doesn’t showcase this in detriment of the device’s practicality. Aluminium and magnesium stand at the core of build-materials. If they were to use only aluminium, the machine would be slippery and it would have been riddled with scratches from God knows where

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015 Brand New Model

The panel found on the rear of the machine’s display is built from fine carbon-fibre. Other gaps found on the Carbon are filled with reinforced fibre made out of plastic. At the touch, the blackness feels soft and smooth.

I’ve got no quarrel with how Lenovo constructed their machine. It’s lightweight and sturdy because of the materials used.

The Carbon was never constructed with design in mind just for design’s sake. This means that the latest Apple MacBook Pro, or the Dell XPS 13 are better looking. They are sleeker, and subsequently more desirable. The ThinkPad has been built with business in mind – elegant, simple but capable of doing the exact same thing other flag-ship laptops boast about.

Even though it’s business-aimed, it’s an Ultrabook, clearly. The Carbon X1 weighs 1.31 kilos, which is just a couple of grams lighter than the MacBook Pro. Surprisingly, Lenovo’s machine is just about as thick as the 13-inch MacBook Air.

It’s more than great, but it’s worth noting that there are other consumer machines which are smaller, and lighter. The Dell XPS 13, revised, is about 15 millimeters thin and weighs 1.17 kilos.

The new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015

It’s not something noticeable at first, but if you carry it on a day to day basis, it will pull on your shoulder more, and your carry-bag will be a little bit bigger.

It has better components when compared to the 2014 second gen model. The machine is 4G-ready, it has a dual-band 802.11ac wireless support and the TPM and vPro are included to assure security for businesses – this isn’t something that you will be get if you choose to acquire a Dell or a MacBook.

Indeed, it can be upgraded, but not by much. The RAM is soldered in place, but you can lift the base panel and gain access to the M.2 SSD, the wireless card and other internals.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Screen and Sound Quality

Brand new Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015

The X1 Carbon has a 14-inch display and a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 – the display panel is of IPS descent. With a pixel density of 210ppi it’s borderline excellent, however Apple’s latest MacBook features 227ppi. Though, the difference isn’t noticeable at all.

Because of the screen’s high density images, icons and text are sharp and clear.

You’ll be using the scaling option for Windows. If you opt-in for a native res, then the OS will look small and it will become barely usable.

Unfortunately, third party tools still don’t get as much support as we would have wanted. It isn’t a huge issue, but it’s worth mentioning that there will be minor pixelation problems and other visual artefacts present. It has improved, a lot I might add, but OS X is by far the better one.

It has a fantastic 6,584k color temperature, but the XPS 13 beats it, slightly. In fact, ThinkPad’s rivals end up in the lead in almost every department. Brightness levels are better than Dell’s XPS, but when comparing black points Dell, once again, takes first place.

However, both of them are exquisite.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015 Third Generation Model

Lenovo features a 1,013:1 contrast. Dell is superior with 1,505:1. Yet again, another area where the Carbon falls a little bit short.

The X1 has a high-quality sharpness and it can handle anything photo-edit related, but Apple’s latest MacBook has flawless viewing angles and much better scaling due to its OS X.

Sound-quality wise, speakers are quite good, but they have too much middle. This means that volume is plentiful, but treble takes a beating. Sound doesn’t seem to have the required high-punch in order to really stand out.

What I found impressive is how much bass the laptop can output. Unfortunately, it gets swamped and sound  is buried under a stew of high-pitched noises trying to make themselves heard.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Performance

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015 is aimed at businesses

The ThinkPad X1 comes packed with a Core i7-5600U proc that outweighs Dell’s XPS. It’s even faster due to it having 400MHz. The L3 cache can stretch the power even further with Turbo Boost.

Clearly, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon beats Dell in the performance department, but it doesn’t pack enough punch to make a clear ground between itself and Apple’s MacBook machine. It came as quite the shock because Apple’s laptop has a Core i5 proc. Under closer investigation, you can observe that Apple’s machine has a more powerful and faster chip – 100MHz faster.

MacBook’s GPU also overpowers Lenovo’s – it’s an Intel Iris 6100, which is better than X1’s HD Graphics 5500 chipset.

Benchmark tests is where both machines prove their worth. Although the Carbon scored 17.1 frame per second in the Unigine Heaven gaming test, it comes dead second in Geekbench. It barely scored 5,194. Apple’s MacBook managed a whooping 7,010.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015 is built out of high-quality materials

Bottomline is that both machines output a decent amount of speed for work related tasks. Your usual office apps run without issues. Photo editing tools work flawless. Only the most demanding programs will make the X1 struggle.

Storage tests proved that the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is quite the beast. That is, if it’s compared with average laptops that come equipped with an HDD. The X1 M.2 Samsung SSD is by far quicker than any hard drive, but it’s sequential read and write speeds aren’t enough to compete with Apple’s machine.

Lenovo’s 482MB/s read speed and 256MB/s write speed doesn’t compare with Apple’s 645MB/s and 1.2GB/s.

There were no issues regarding heating or too much noise. The i7 proc reached a high of 68 degrees and little to none heat got out of the laptop.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Battery Life

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015 has a high-quality screen

During a standard 40 percent brightness test, the ThinkPad lasted 9 hours and 50 minutes. This is more than great, but its rivals performed better. The Dell XPS 13 almost reached the half day mark, and the MacBook Pro went over it.

The Carbon is pretty good in this area, but its competitors take the gold.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Keyboard and Trackpad

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015 has 210ppi.

Lenovo’s ThinkPads are considered to have one of the best keyboards on the market. The third gen X1 Carbon had big shoes to fill.

Initially I thought that because the Carbon was so lightweight and slim, Lenovo had to cut down somewhere, and that somewhere had to be the keyboard area. Quality remains unhindered. Keys are still large with a deep dip so you can type better and faster. Typing is consistent and responsive, it’s soft and comfortable. No criticism here.

The third gen Carbon has a better trackpad than its previous gen brother, and its two built-in buttons are highly responsive. The points can feel a little bit twitchy, initially, but it has to be this way for a longer use. Its more than decent.

Lenovo’s keyboard remains reigning king, but the trackpad? Not so much. MacBook Pro’s Force TouchPad is better. But to be honest, this is a matter of taste. Needless to say, both of them are great.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Miscellaneous

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015 is as thin as they get

The most expensive Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon costs $2650. But there are cheaper configs available. You can choose from various options that include, or exclude touchscreens. You can choose a 1920 x 108 res or a 2560 x 1440 one. You can even choose models with more, or less RAM and storage.

The cheapest Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon costs $1,900 and it comes packed with a 1920 x 1080 res display, non-touchscreen however, 4 gigs of RAM, an SSD comprised of 128 gigs and an Intel Core i5 5200U proc.

If you want to compare the Lenovo with its competitors, you should know that the MacBook Air’s cheapest model retails at $1,300, and Dell’s XPS 13 starts at $1230. You can save a ton of money, but neither of them don’t have vPro, or TPM like the ThinkPad.

Lenovo’s 2015 Carbon comes with a three-year warranty. This is more than great, and it can put your mind at peace when considering the long-term investment.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Verdict

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015 is 4G-ready!

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon is an impressive laptop and it shines in every area. Yet, it gets beaten by competitors in almost every department. It’s aimed at businesses but it also offers a commercial appeal. Unfortunately, business use is on the top of its priority lists.

It’s as thin as you get them, and it won’t strain your back even though it’s slightly bulkier than the MacBook Pro or the Dell XPS 13. The screen is sharp, with vibrant colors. Everything looks superb on the laptop’s display, but visually, Apple’s machine betters the ThinkPad.

The X1 Carbon outperforms the XPS, but it’s a ton slower than Apple’s MacBook Pro. Also, Lenovo, although it has a great battery life, considering all things, it gets bested by Dell and Apple.

If you’re in need of a consumer laptop, then you should definitely go for an Apple or Dell machine. Lenovo’s ThinkPad is best used for business. Its strengths lie in the vPro, the fingerprint reader, TPM, the more than generous huge three-year warranty and access to all of its internals.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 2015 has a three-year warranty

Because it’s business oriented, you’ll have to pay more. Is it worth the trade-offs? It’s a pretty great business Ultrabook, but going over the $2,000 mark seems a little bit of an overkill for what it has to offer. The laptop is consistently good, with no crashes encountered, and most importantly it doesn’t creak or squeak. Build material is top notch.

Bottomline is – looking for a business machine? Take the Lenovo. Looking for a consumer machine? Pick an Apple or Dell laptop.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Price – Between $1,900 and $2,650.

Former Apple CEO Relaunches Obi as Obi Worldphone

August 27, 2015 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Obi Relaunches as the Obi Worldphone

John Sculley,  Apple CEO from 1983 to 1993, took the industry by surprise today when he unveiled a relaunch of Obi, now called Obi Worldphone.

With help from Robert Brunner, Ammunition design founder, Obi Worldphone looks pretty darn cool and unique. It’s an inexpensive phone with mid-level performance capabilities.

The new Android smartphone has been launched in two different models.

  • The Obi Worldphone SF1 which costs $199.
  • The Obi Worldphone SJ1.5 which costs $129.

Both models will be available this October. The company’s target demo is 25 year olds and younger. John Sculley is aiming the new redesigned Obi at emerging markets in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

With Xiaomi and Huawei reigning kings in China, surpassing Apple and taking the first and second place in the country, it is unknown at the moment if John will try to tackle this market too.

Both Obi Worldphone models will feature your usual components like Qualcomm and MediaTek procs, with the latter being used for the $129 Obi. Corning Gorilla Glass, a Sony camera and Dolby sound for both smartphones.

The thing is, Sculley and his company will focus more on how the Obi Worldphone looks rather than what it’s equipped with. They want to be a design-led company, he told Engadget.

Sculley thinks that they have the upper-hand when it comes to competing with mobile industry giants like Apple, HTC and Samsung. The smartphone manufacturer notes that because these companies are so huge they don’t have that much liberty to play with design or branding material. They tend to move slower.

The Obi Worldphone was unveiled by former Apple CEO John Sculley

This, paired with the Obi Worldphone being a fresh start-up, makes John’s company more free to swap components and change smartphone designs to better server users.

The $199 model is a 4G and LTE equipped smartphone. It has a reinforced fiberglass body due to Corning Gorilla Glass, and it’s 5-inch display is sharp and crystal clear. It has two Sony camera units with flashes on the back and the front. The SF1 features a Snapdragon 615 proc with 2 gigs of RAM and 16 gigs of storage space. For $249 you’ll get 3 gigs of RAM and 32 gigs of storage space.

The cheaper SJ1.5 model has 3G support, a MediaTek quad-core proc and 16GB of storage.

The Obi Worldphone for Emerging Markets

Both models run on Android 5.1 Lollipop and both phones have dual SIM slots. The latter is a must-have for emerging countries.

Initially, it will see the light of day in Pakistan, Turkey, India, Tanzania, South Africa, Nigeria, Keynia, Thailand, Saudia Arabia, the UAE, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Elbows off the table and smartphones in your pocket

August 26, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Elbows off the table and smartphones in your pocket

We take our smartphones everywhere with us: on first dates, to the hospital, to dinner with our parents, to swimming lessons and even to church. We can no longer deny their ubiquity. Despite being everywhere, we still lack an etiquette for using smartphones. When is and when isn’t acceptable to take out your device and glaze your fingers over the screen, immersed in Facebook, Twitter or Reddit content?

The Pew Research Center took on the task of carrying out a survey on 3,217 Americans, out of which 3,042 were smartphone users. The results point to the fact that we all have different opinions on cell phone etiquette. Most of us are annoyed when someone takes out their phone at dinner, but we’re all guilty of the same thing.

A look at the numbers from the report shows that nine out of ten adults carry their smartphones everywhere they go, and the majority of interviewers with ages between 18 and 29 think it’s ok to use their gadgets in public places like crowded buses.

Elbows off the table and smartphones in your pocket

If a staggering ninety percent of the surveyed young adults said they wouldn’t shy away from flipping through Facebook on their smartphones on a crowded subway, only eleven percent agreed that using the phones in quiet places like a movie theater is acceptable.

Exactly how many of these young adults admitted to using a cell phone on their last social gathering? The survey showed that as much as eighty-nine percent of them answered affirmatively. Guided by the “always on” motto, the young generation seems to crave being online at all times, no matter the social circumstances.

This can have serious effects on multiple fronts. Scientists worry human interactions are sacrificed to the benefit of Whatsapp and Reddit. But using your smartphones also disables you from multitasking. Texting or talking while driving is the best example to illustrate that inattention can be fatal.

Elbows off the table and smartphones in your pocket

Eighty-two percent of the Pew survey respondents admitted that whenever their friends are more interested in their smartphones than in their companies it ruins the atmosphere and it can hurt the whole gathering.

Although meant to help people connect, these gadgets seem to be a double-edged sword. The survey revealed that young adults often use their smartphones to engage or disengage from a social gathering.

So what is everyone looking up on their smartphones at parties? The same survey found that fifty-five percent sent text messages, emails or posted something from the gathering they were attending. Fifty-three percent of the respondents said they posted a photo or a video while fifty-one percent googled something they thought the group would be interested in.

Maybe Pew Research Center should repeat their survey with teenagers. The results, I’m sure, will be worth our time.

Rovio Fires Employees Even Though Angry Birds 2 is a Hit

August 26, 2015 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Rovio's Angry Birds

Angry Birds maker Rovio is firing employees due to money problems, even though Angry Birds 2 is a hit.

The Finnish company is having serious troubles paying the bills and it’s going to cut approximately 260 jobs. This comes after a 110 employee lay-off in October of 2014.

When 2013 ended, the company had 800 employees.

News that Rovio is laying-off people comes as a huge surprise considering that their latest release is a big hit across the world.

Angry Birds 2 sits at 50 million downloads in one month. It has topped the charts in the U.S. App Store market and the Chinese one. Also, as you can see down below, Angry Birds 2 is sitting nicely in many other countries.

Rovio's Angry Birds Charts Across the world

However, Angry Birds 2 is starting to fall in these charts. Sure, 50 million downloads is huge, but their freemium model isn’t working as the company expected.

For those of you who don’t know, freemium means that an app is basically free but it has an in-game currency which you can buy with real-world money. With in-game currency you acquire items that either let you use a spell more or unlock a certain part of the game early.

This model, even though highly popular, doesn’t seem to work for Rovio. Games like Candy Crush Saga, Candy Crush Soda Saga, Clash of Clans and Game of War are pummeling the top of the charts for months – all along using a freemium model.

Basically, Angry Birds 2 isn’t enough for the company to solely exist on. Rovio has expanded into Seoul and Tokyo, Shanghai and Vancouver, Los Angeles and New York City, London, and Stockholm. Their Espoo HQ is found in Finland.

This does not resemble your average indie game dev studio.

The Angry Birds franchise was one of the first to be a huge mobile hit. The likes of which were never seen before on the App Store and Play Store.

Rovio fires employees

It quickly grew from a thousand people playing it to millions of users paying a few dollars just to download the latest title. Rovio’s Angry Birds is indeed designed for mobile gaming, but fans don’t like it that they moved towards the freemium model. Micro-transactions and waiting doesn’t mold well with the game itself.

Rovio makes additional money from Angry Birds merch. The company sells licensed materials, and they sell a ton from teddy bears to pens and notebooks.

But as it becomes less and less popular, those items could very well become irrelevant.

There is one last glimmer of hope for Rovio – The Angry Birds movie. They have been working on the movie for some time now and it’s expected to be released in May of 2016.

These lay-offs, Rovio says, will affect the whole company except the teams working on the movie. This is a huge risk that might determine the fate of the company. Let’s see if their play pans out!

New Olympus Mirrorless Camera To Roll Out In September

August 25, 2015 By Michael Turner Leave a Comment

New Olympus Mirrorless Camera

The new Olympus mirrorless camera takes most of its features from its predecessor, Olympus Om-D EM-10, adding a bunch of cool stuff to make it one of the best entry cameras out there. And, of course, we can’t forget the boost it got on the design front.

What’s new with the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II? Olympus added the 5 axis sensor shift stabilization that is usually found in high end cameras. This can improve your photos’ sharpness, colors and keep blurriness at bar. The 5 axis sensor is without a precedent among entry level cameras, so it’s safe to say Olympus might have just paved the way to better and more competitive beginner photo devices.

Unlike the earlier version, the new Olympus mirrorless camera has an improved viewfinder, boasting a 2.36 million dot OLED display. Olympus also tinkered with the controls, and they added dual dials as well as a programmable function key. They are all easy to reach when your face is up against the device.

New Olympus Mirrorless Camera

The Mark II seems to have also improved its autofocus that can now capture 8.5 shots per second. Meantime, the contrast-detection AF system will adjust with each shot. You can also use the three inch touchscreen like a trackpad for selecting your autofocus point. The shutter speed varies between 1/4000 of a second and one minute.

The new Olympus mirrorless camera has ISO settings that can reach up to 25,600. It also has a one of a kind Composite feature which enables you to expose two different areas of the scene in different ways.

Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II has built in WiFI capability and you can even download a control app on your smartphone. This allows you to play around with the exposure, shoot remotely, experiment with different photo filters and even geotag your shots.

Even though you can’t film 4K videos with the new Olympus mirrorless camera, it does allow users to try out 4K time lapse mode. This means the camera will take a string of still images which will then be converted in a movie, as a time lapse. The video mode best resolution is 1080p, with 24, 30 or 60fps.

New Olympus Mirrorless Camera

Although it looks like a tiny camera, the new Mark II doesn’t make you feel you’re using an entry level camera. The magnesium alloy frame makes it look sturdier, despite its size. The various buttons and knobs allow for swift adjustments.

The new Olympus mirrorless camera will roll out in September and might prove out to be a serious competitor for the Alpha a6000 by Sony. The Mark II body will sell at $700, but if you’d like a kit including a 14-42mm lens, you’ll have to pay $900.
