You probably believed that every part of your body is genetically inherited. Apparently, your nose shape is “designed” by climate, not by your parents. The nose shape is important for helping you condition the air you breathe. This might be the reason why it was made by climate and not genetically inherited.

A new study shows that the nose shape is made in such a way to help us adapt to climate. Despite the fact that sometimes people tell you that you have the same nose as your mother or your father, they are wrong. Your nose shape has an important job in your system and it is made this way to help you adapt to the environment.

This new research was conducted by a team of scientists from Pennsylvania State University. They discovered that the nose shape is different from place to place. People born in cold places have a different nose shape than people who live in warm places.

This is our way to adapt to the climate. The researchers discovered that people who live in warm and humid climates have a wider nose. On the contrary, those who live in cold and dry places have a narrower nose. The findings show that the climate we live in shapes us too, not only genetics do.

“The positive direction of the effects indicates that wider noses are more common in warm-humid climates, while narrower noses are more common in cold-dry climates,” said Mark D. Shriver, Professor at Pennsylvania State University.

The researchers observed that people in cold places need a narrower nose so that they could alter the airflow in order to become warmer and more humidified. Since the air is warmer and more humid there, people who live in warm climates can have a wider nose. They don’t need to alter the air.

Researchers also observed that people who had a narrower nose shape and lived in colder climates were more likely to have more children than those with wider noses. This shows, once again, that every creature on Earth has a way of adapting to the climate.

More Opioid Prescriptions In The US Than Any Other Country

Doctors should stop giving opioid prescriptions.

Opioids are one of the biggest problems in the US. More and more people die from opioids overdose. Despite the fact that the number of opioid prescriptions has been decreasing in the last few years, Americans are the ones that consume the most opioids in the world.

The US is the country where people use opioids more than in any other parts of the world. Despite the fact that states officials have been trying to lower the rate of opioid consumption, this did not happen. A new report shows that US citizens are prescribed 6 times more opioids per capita than citizens in France or Portugal.

The numbers are shocking, especially because there are so many deaths caused by opioid prescriptions. Doctors should stop giving opioid prescriptions. Instead, people should receive other drugs that are less harmful and less addictive too.

Everybody knows that opioids are addictive. Once a person starts to take them they can’t stop easily. After they don’t receive opioid prescriptions anymore, they tend to use other drugs like heroin. These drugs are dangerous. They have cause hundreds of deaths every year in the US.

The most shocking news is that US citizens consume almost 99% of the opioid supplies worldwide. This means that there are countries where opioids are not even prescribed. Despite the fact that many might believe that there are many opioid prescriptions in the US due to the aging population, this is not true.

There are other countries that have more people aged more than 65 and the consumption of opioids is much lower than in the US. One factor that can influence the number of opioid prescription is the aggressive marketing of pharmaceutical manufacturers.

They are the ones who benefit from the consumption of opioids. The ones that produce these drugs are also the ones that still support the consumption of their products in the US. People should stop consuming these drugs and try other alternative measures.

For instance, for chronic back pain guidelines recommend massages and exercises. Drugs are only recommended when these alternative measures fail. Opioids are not recommended in any case since they are so dangerous.

Common Painkillers Might Increase The Risk Of Cardiac Arrest

Doctors are advising people who have heart problems to avoid common painkillers.

We all know that some drugs can do more harm than good. This is why people should not take pills without the approval of a doctor. A new research shows that common painkillers might increase the risk of cardiac arrest.

Ibuprofen, for instance, is one of the most common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Studies have shown that this drug can increase our chances of having a cardiac arrest by almost 50%. This means that people who usually take painkillers are more likely to have a cardiac arrest.

Doctors are advising people who have heart problems to avoid common painkillers. They have a higher risk of suffering cardiac arrests when compared to those without heart conditions. There are some drugs that might increase the risk more than others.

“Diclofenac and ibuprofen, both commonly used drugs, were associated with significantly increased risk of cardiac arrest,” mentioned Professor Gunnar Gislason.

NSAIDs are the most common pills people use worldwide. Many of these drugs don’t even need a prescription. Ibuprofen is one of the drugs that can be purchased without a prescription and it is also one of the most dangerous ones.

Doctors mentioned that all these drugs need to be purchased with a prescription. This is because many people believe they are safe if they don’t need a prescription to buy them. Once people believe they are safe, they buy them frequently.

In order to show the effects of common painkillers, researchers analyzed all patients who have suffered a cardiac arrest between 2001 and 2010, in Denmark. They observed that people who used painkillers regularly were more likely to experience cardiac arrest. This shows that NSAIDs are not safe at all and they should be avoided.

People who take diclofenac or ibuprofen are advised to go to their doctor and review the treatment. There are safer painkillers on the market that have almost the same effects without causing so much harm. Also, people who need to take these painkillers should never take more than the daily recommended dosage. All in all, people should use these drugs only when necessary and in small dosage.

The Size Of Black Men Is Overestimated

Black men are often seen as a threat, despite the fact that they are not.

Racism is still a big problem even nowadays. People perceive black men as being more muscular when compared to white men. This is why black men are considered to be more of a threat than white men.

A new study shows that people have misconceptions about black people. This research was published in the Journal Of Personality and Social Psychology. The biggest issue revealed in this study is the way people perceive black women and men.

They are normally seen as natural athletes and this is why they are seen as a threat sometimes. A series of experiments showed that black men are seen as bigger and more muscular than white men that have the same size. This shows that there are misconceptions about black people.

“Black people are often dehumanized but also super-humanized; this means that people will attribute superhuman characteristics to black people,” said lead author John Paul Wilson

In order to conduct this study, researchers showed the participants photos of black and white men. The participants were shown 45 images of white males and 45 pictures with black ones. All of them were football players. Despite the fact that most of the white men were bigger and taller than the black ones, the participants saw them otherwise.

Most of the participants answered by saying that the black football players were more muscular, taller, and bigger than the white ones. This shows, once again, that black men are often seen as a threat, despite the fact that they are not.

After the participants responded to this experiment, they were put to another test. Researchers told them to imagine that they would fight these men. Most of the participants, once again, mentioned that the black players were “more capable of harming” them than the white male.

The scientists that were involved in this study mentioned that the findings show that many people still base their answers on stereotypes.  This is why more people fear black men and why they think that police should use force against them.  Researchers mentioned that these perceptions could have dangerous consequences.

Too Much Screen Time For Children Can Cause Diabetes

There might be a connection between screen time and diabetes.

Technology has almost become a family member for most of us. We use smartphones, TVs, laptops, tablets, and other gadgets in order to stay connected, work, and relax. Since they see their parents on the laptop all the time, children tend to spend more and more screen time. We all know that there are some consequences to this problem.

Previous studies showed that children that spend too much screen time have a higher risk of becoming overweight or obese. A new study goes even further. It shows that there might be a connection between screen time and diabetes. Although it might seem like a long shot, researchers believe that children who spend too much screen time are more likely to develop diabetes.

The Effects of Spending Too Much Screen Time

This research was conducted by scientists at the University of London. They analyzed more than 4,400 9 and 10-year olds. Researchers observed that 1 in 5 children spend more than 3 hours in front of screens. They also saw that these kids were heavier. The ones that are more likely to spend more screen time were boys.

The team of researchers mentioned that heavier children have a higher chance of developing insulin resistance. This means that they might have higher levels of blood sugar. Over time, these levels can increase the chance of developing type 2 diabetes. Researchers believe that kids should spend less time watching TV or playing video games.

 “Our findings suggest reducing screen time may be beneficial in reducing type 2 diabetes risk factors,” mentioned the leader of the study, Dr. Claire Nightingale.

In order to be healthy and to avoid disease, children need to spend more time outside, away from any type of screen. This way they can also develop their social and emotional skills. Kids who tend to spend more time playing on the computer or checking their smartphone are less likely to have many friends. This is because they tend to be more isolated than others.

Many studies showed that spending too much screen time is not beneficial for children and adults. Besides the fact that it can increase the chance of obesity and disease, it also increases the feeling of isolation.

Two People In Critical Condition After Consuming Toxic Tea

After consuming toxic tea two people were admitted to the hospital in critical condition

Tea is one of the healthiest drinks that you can consume. Many people drink tea on a regular basis in order to treat their diseases. Apparently, tea can actually make you ill. This is the case for two people in San Francisco.

After consuming toxic tea both of them were admitted to the hospital in critical condition. San Francisco Department of Public Health mentioned that these people consumed the same herbal tea that was purchased from a seller in Grant Avenue in Chinatown.

The people that are in critical condition drank this toxic tea in February and March. A woman in her 50s and a man in his 30s were the ones that became ill soon after drinking this herbal tea. The symptoms started to show after less than an hour.

Their symptoms consisted in irregular heartbeats and severe weakness. Due to these severe symptoms, both of them were admitted to the hospital. The leaves for the tea were sold by Sun Wing Wo Trading Co.

What did the Toxic Tea Contain?

After these people were admitted to the hospital, tests were run on the toxic tea. It was discovered that the poison was aconite. This plant-based poison is dangerous because it affects the heart. This substance can be deadly, especially when it is consumed in large quantities.

Normally, the aconite is used in Asian herbal medicine. This can treat many medical conditions. The problem is that it was not processed properly. When this happens the plant is poisonous. There is not cure for aconite contamination. This is why it is so dangerous.

What is going to happen to the toxic tea?

The health department in San Francisco decided to withdraw the products that were consumed by these victims. They also want the shop to help them find the source of the contamination. The health department wants to avoid any other contaminations caused by the toxic tea.

“Anyone who has purchased tea from this location should not consume it and should throw it away immediately,” said Dr. Tomás Aragón, health Officer for the City & County of San Francisco.

Despite the fact that some people might not experience the symptoms of the contamination immediately, they have to go to the hospital, if they start appearing. People are asked to stop consuming this tea, even if they don’t experience any symptoms.

We all know that our heart is the engine that keeps us alive. As long as it beats, we live. Apparently, there is a part of our system that works after the heart stops. Our brain is the one that can still function after we are practically dead.A new study suggests that brain activity doesn’t simply stop the moment we die. Although it doesn’t function for a long time after the heart stops, this research shows that the brain works a few minutes after we die.

The researchers discovered that our brain continues its activity for almost 10 minutes after we are considered dead. Although it might seem odd, the brain activity in dead people is the same as the one in people who are sleeping.

This study was conducted by researchers from the University of Western Ontario. Their findings show, once again, how complex the brain really is. Previous studies conducted on decapitated rats showed that their brain still worked a minute after they were killed. This new research shows that there is a big difference between the brain activity observed in people and the one observed in rats.

In order to conduct this study, scientists analyzed 4 people who were taken off life support. They analyzed both the brain activity levels before and after they were taken off life support. The researchers observed that one of the patients’ brain was active more than 10 minutes after he was considered dead.

A Rare Phenomenon, Not a Scientific Fact

Despite the fact that scientists observed brain activity after death, they are more inclined to believe that it was a rare phenomenon and not a scientific reality. However you put it, the research shows that some people can experience brain activity even after they are dead.

Due to the fact that it has ethical implications, the researchers mentioned that they can’t continue their studies. The researchers mentioned that they can’t consider these findings a scientific fact because only one of these patients had brain activity after he was dead.

The team of scientists completed the research by saying that death is a mysterious phenomenon. They also stated that this phenomenon is different for every person that experiences it. This is because every person’s system reacts differently when he or she dies.

Low-Gluten Diet Linked To Increased Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes

A long-term study suggests that this type of diet can increase our risk of type 2 diabetes.

People are trying to find the best diet for them. Some are trying the Mediterranean diet, while others try a low-gluten one. The problem with severe diets is that our bodies lack some nutrients. If we avoid certain products or substances, we might do more harm than good.

Researchers are trying to figure out if a low-gluten diet can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. A new study focuses on finding out if the lack of gluten can affect our health. This long-term study suggests that this type of diet can increase our risk of type 2 diabetes.

This study started in 1984 and it estimated how much gluten people eat. More than 200,000 participants responded to food questionnaires every 2 to 4 years. The findings of more than 30 years of study were presented today.

The researchers that conducted this study observed those who eat a lot of gluten were less likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Those who did not consume gluten had an increased risk of developing this condition over the 30 years of study.

The team of researchers mentioned that they wanted to see the effects of a low-gluten diet on healthy people. They mentioned that gluten-free foods have less fiber. This means that people that don’t suffer from celiac disease should not limit their gluten intake. The only ones that should eat gluten-free products are people that are diagnosed with celiac disease.

Other researchers that were not involved in the study mentioned that they believe the lack of fiber is the problem, not the gluten intake. People that have celiac disease should not be afraid because they don’t have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The problem is that they do have a higher chance of developing type 1 diabetes.

In the study, it was shown that people who eat less gluten also tend to eat less cereal fiber. This could be the reason for which they are more likely to have diabetes. The researchers mentioned that the only ones that should eat gluten-free products are those who are sensitive to it or those who have celiac disease. Healthy people should not start a low-gluten diet because it does more harm than good.

Pot And Booze Linked To Lower College Grades

Students who did not smoke pot but drank a lot had lower college grades in the first semester.

When you are young and foolish you tend to make a lot of not-so-smart decisions. Many college students want to experiment more and that is why they start drinking more. Some of them try out smoking pot while others smoke it regularly.

The consumption of pot and booze is known for making students care less about studying. A new research shows there is a connection between the high use of pot and booze and lower college grades. This study analyzed US students that had similar academic potential.

In order to find out if the use of booze and pot affected their academic potential, researchers compared the GPAs of the sober students with the GPAs of those who consume booze and pot. When they made the comparison they observed that the differences are huge. They were expecting to see some differences, but not that big.

Students who did not smoke pot but drank a lot had lower college grades in the first semester. As the year went on, they tended to achieve similar GPAs as sober students. This means that they realized that they needed to get better grades.

When it came to heavy users of booze and marijuana, the grades were a lot lower. These students had bad grades in the first semester and they did not do anything to improve them. Sober students, in general, had higher grades than those who drank or consumed pot.

The researchers did mention that they were surprised about one fact. Those who drank a lot were able to get similar GPAs as sober students. This means that heavy consumption of marijuana is much worse for college grades than drinking alcohol.

Although students who drank tended to repair their grades by the end of the year, this doesn’t mean that it is ok to drink regularly. Scientists mentioned that they did this study to show, once again, that alcohol and pot can make students have lower college grades.

Both marijuana and booze can impair attention, memory, the ability to identify differences, and executive functions. This can cause students to be less efficient at retaining information in class and at studying. All of these cause students to have lower grades and even quit college.

Interval Training Exercise Might Make You Look Younger

A new study focused on showing how high-intensity interval training can help us.

Exercise, exercise, exercise! This is what we hear every day. Although many people know the benefits working out brings to them, they don’t do it. A lot of researchers proved that exercising regularly is the best medicine for us. No matter if we are too tired or we want to lose weight, it is better to work out than to take drugs.

A new study focused on showing how high-intensity interval training can help us. You probably heard about this high-intensity interval training. These workouts involve short bursts of highly intense aerobic activity followed by moderate exercise. This type of interval training is apparently the best for our health.

Interval training is the type of workout that is known for reversing age-related changes. People who practice this training help their cells produce more proteins. After that, the proteins give them more energy. This is the thing that helps people feel and look younger.

In order to see which type of exercise is best for people, researchers analyzed women and men. These people were from 2 age groups. The “young group” was composed of people between 18 and 30. The “older group” had people between 65 and 80.

Researchers put all of the participants in 3 mixed groups.All of the groups contained both young and old, women and men. Each group received a different type of training. The training program took 3 months. The first group did interval training exercises. The second group focused on strength training while the last group combined both.

The team that conducted this study mentioned that they wanted to see to which type of training do people respond better. It was observed that all types of training improve overall fitness. The difference between these training sessions was at the cellular and muscle levels.

Those who did strength training had more defined and bigger muscles. This is also great for older people because they lose their muscle mass as they get older. People who had interval training exercises were the ones that benefited at the cellular level. The study showed that exercise is important and that it helps treat some health conditions and also prevent others.
