Google considering YouTube, Gmail account for kids

July 20, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Google Inc is is planning to permit online accounts for children under the age of 13. The company will make the parents in charge of those accounts through which they will be able to keep an eye on the accounts.

A report published in Financial Times stated that Google is making an attempt to establish a new version of YouTube for youngsters. Shortly, after the completion of this website the company will begin to work on few others child-friendly accounts like Gmail system.

Several other Internet Companies like Google and Facebook Inc. do not allow children under 13 to avail their services. Although it is rather a difficult task to stop them  as most of the under 13 age users sign up with fake information.

A.U.S law called Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) to enforce some strict controls over the accumulation and use of information of children under 13.

Google has started this effort because some parents are trying to create accounts for their children. Google merely wants to make a straightforward procedure for them, according to the reports of The Wall Street Journal.

Android Beats iOS in the US but Apple Leads in the Market Share for Smartphones

July 17, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

It may be difficult to believe at first, but research indicates that smartphone vendors in the US still have a lot more room to expand. The US is having a population of 318 million out of which only 169 million use smartphones. Relative to the population; smartphones have only penetrated into 50% of the population.

Moreover recent statistics suggest that 70% of the mobile users in the US use smartphones. The numbers are self-indicative of the potential for the expansion for smartphone companies, provided they attract the right buyers. Also, on average Americans keep their smartphones for about 21 to 24 months which also indicates the possibility to attract users to switch their smartphones.

Amongst all the OEMS, Apple has the highest market share when it comes to smartphones with an impressive 41.9% while the OS market is dominated by Google’s Android OS. It is interesting to note that Android is not only leading globally in smartphone OS but also in the US. The sales share of Android in the US smartphone market stood at 61.9% compared to iOS’s 41.9% in the three months ended on May, 2014.

As you would have guessed the market for Symbian and Blackberry Os has significantly declined despite the Lumia series.

AT&T launches Amazon Fire Phone in market for $200

July 16, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

The ‘Fire’ phone – Amazon’s newest unveiling and first foray into the smart phone market – has seen its launch, and, currently, AT&T have the exclusive rights to sell the phone. The unveiling took place on July 25, where AT&T announced two deals which can be taken advantage of alongside the purchase of the new smart phone.

As AT&T have said, you can purchase the phone – which is available both online and in stores – as part of a two year contract for $200, or $27.09 a month for the next two years with their Next instalment plan. This plan has the phone locked as a 32GB handset. Alternatively, you can purchase the 64GB handset for $299 or $31.25 a month with AT&T Next.

Before its release, it was known as the 3D Phone because word on the street was that Amazon was implementing some sort of innovative 3D technology into the handset, although, as the new phone shows, this never materialized. The phone has also integrated five front cameras, four of which are used for the Dynamic Perspective.

Amazon has also noted that the phone has a 4.7-inch HD LCD display with 1,280-by-720 resolution at 315 pixels per inch as well as runnig a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, Adreno 330 GPU, and 2GB of RAM. The company has also noted that the phone has a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, and records in 1080p at 30 fps from the front- and rear-facing shooters. Although the phone comes with all this integrated fairly well, it does not include a microSD card slot.

Amazon has also said that:

“Firefly lets you instantly discover helpful information on over 100 million movies, songs, and products. Simply press and hold the Firefly Button on the side of Fire Phone to quickly capture and launch Web addresses, send emails, or make phone calls without typing addresses or phone numbers.”

The phone received a three and a half stars out of five from PCMag, based on the features mentioned above, as well as how well these features were integrated.

Sea World takes heavy hits

June 16, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Sea World announced on Friday, that it will build new, larger environments for its whales and will fund in additional research on animals along with a program to protect ocean health and whales in the wild. The company’s shares have dropped significantly since they made their stocks public last year. Sea World has been heavily criticized recently because of a documentary called “Blackfish” which focuses on the death of a SeaWorld trainer who died as a result of aggression from the whale. The documentary suggests that captivity is not suitable for whales, they prefer their natural habitat and since their pools are inadequate in size they become aggressive towards each other. The captivity also makes them more susceptible to violence towards humans. Since the release of the documentary, many entertainers have pulled out of planned performances at Sea Worlds parks. Sea World’s longtime partnership with Southwest Airlines is ending too and the company reported disappointing second-quarter financial results.

Sea World

Sea World claims that under its new announcement it will build a tank with 10 million gallons of water at its San Diego park, with a depth of 50 feet. This new environment will be called the Blue World Project, and it will include more stimulation for the whales like fast water currents to swim against. The facility will be open to public in 2018 after which Sea World will start to make changes in other states. The company reported the cost to be hundreds of millions of dollars but no specifics were mentioned.

”Blackfish” director Gabriela Cowperthwaite complained that these changes are inadequate to please the public and neither will the improve the lives of the whales. She explained that whales are aggressively bred in captivity, separated from their family and consequently fight constantly for dominance. She makes the suggestion the people are upset because whales are not meant for captivity. She also suggests that Sea World should make oceanic sanctuaries which will allow the whales to live out their lives in a natural environment.

Dinosaur Extinction Due to Colossal Bad Luck

May 28, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

The extinction of dinosaurs has been founded to be mainly due to colossal bad luck as Stephen Brusatte states. Brussate is an evolutionary biologist and a verterbrate paleontologist from the University of Edinburgh. He led the international team in is study about the extinction of dinosaurs and the asteroid hit as published in Biological Reviews’ latest issue.

As stated from his interview with the Discovery news, he said that the asteroid almost did it, wiping dinosaurs but it happened on a bad time when the dinosaurs’ ecosystem weakened due to diversity loss. He further said that the dinosaurs would have survived if the asteroid hits million years earlier than its actual timing, then the extinction would have not happened.

It was noted that years before the asteroid hit the Earth has been undergoing extreme changes in sea level and temperature, huge volcanic eruptions and many other interconnected changes. Mountain formation and other tectonic events even led to the large seaway disappearance that covered much of North America’s interior during the Cretaceous.

These changes led to the extinction of the plant-eating dinosaurs that leaves the ecosystem imbalanced. When this asteroid hit the Yucatan Peninsula 66 years ago, it hit a paradise-like static world where dinosaurs live and caused them to become extinct in nature as what Stephen Brusatte states further.

Richard Butler from the University of Birmingham’s School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, even reminds that many bird species have become extinct about 66 million years ago. So, Butler and Brussate both agrees that if no asteroid impact and other environmental changes have happened, dinosaurs would still survive up to the present time. Yet they have also pointed out that humans won’t be here on earth if dinosaurs have not perished or came into extinction.
