Smart Trash Can Devices Unveiled at CES

January 4, 2017 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

genican smart trash device

GeniCan and Eugene are smart trash devices which scan your garbage.

With the Consumer Electronics Show only a few days away, we can expect an array of smart home appliances to make their debut on the showroom floor. However, most of them will be a new generation of previously seen devices and only a few consist of genuine innovation. Among these, you can count GeniCan and Eugene as the world’s first smart trash can devices.

As much as we like to disregard our garbage, it plays an important role in our lives. An analysis of a person’s garbage can tell a lot about a person, their lifestyle, and diet. The way we deal with our trash, whether we recycle it or not is just as important. Thanks to GeniCan and Eugene, all these tasks can be easily managed.

GeniCan is a Wi-Fi enabled device which can be easily attached to the side of your trash can or recycling bins. If features a barcode scanner so that when you’re about to discard the package of a certain product, you can allow GeniCan to scan it and add it to your shopping list. The device even has a microphone for voice recognition, so you can easily add a product which doesn’t have a barcode.

The device is managed through an Android or iOS app. This is where you can find your shopping lists, which can be shared with anyone in your family. The app even allows the device to order items automatically using Amazon’s Dash Replenishment program. GeniCan will be released in early 2017, at a price of $150, with pre-orders available now at $125.

Another new smart trash device similar to GeniCan is Eugene. It has mostly the same functions as GeniCan, with one more extra functionality developed for environmentally-concerned people.  Eugene is developed by Uzer and its another Wi-Fi enabled scanner that reads your trash. However, when it does so, besides adding to a shopping list, it also informs you if you can recycle that specific container. The mobile app of Eugene will inform you of how much energy you’ve saved by recycling.

The developers of Eugene have stated that the device will be released in the US and the UK by the end of 2017 at a price $99.

Eye Tracking Company The Eye Tribe Was Acquired By Oculus

December 29, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

eye tracking technology

Many people are wondering how Oculus is going to use the technology that the eye tracking company is developing.

The Eye Tribe was acquired by Oculus, the VR technology from Facebook. This is a great acquisition for Facebook which realized that for better VR they need an eye tracking company like the Eye Tribe.

The first rumors about this acquisition were made public in a Facebook post by Robert Scoble. This acquisition was also confirmed by a spokesperson from Facebook. The terms of this deal were not made public yet.

The Danish startup, The Eye Tribe was launched in 2011 by 4 students from the IT University of Copenhagen. The startup was created in order to make eye tracking accessible to the masses. This is why Facebook acquired them for Oculus.

The eye tracking technology that is provided by The Eye Tribe is a great fit for Oculus because it offers a simplified and enhanced user experience. The eye tracking devices for computers have a small price of $99. This is another advantage for Facebook.

Many people are wondering how Oculus is going to use the technology that the eye tracking company is developing. The company already produced special technology for VR that generates perfect graphics that can save computational power.

The technology for VR is named The Eye Tribe Tracker Pro and it allows every user to connect a device to another computer machine so that it can monitor eye movement when a person is reading a sheet music or scrolling down a page.

This is a great step for Oculus and it is going to make it even better. The eye tracking tech is important for Oculus and is going to be a great partnership for both of the companies. The Danish startup has taken a grant from The Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation of $2.3 million.

This acquisition is great for Oculus and it is certain that the Danish startup is going to benefit from this too. Let’s wait and see what new features is going to have Oculus after it starts using the eye tracking tech too. 2017 is going to be a great year for technology.

What is your opinion about Oculus? Are you interested in the VR technology?

South Korean Scientists Develop Manned Robot

December 28, 2016 By Karen Jackson 1 Comment

Method-2 manned robot

Engineers have been able to build the fist bipedal manned robot.

A large part of fiction involving robots portrays humans able to pilot large mechanized suits, or more commonly known as mecha, as the term was popularized by the famous Japanese manga Gundam.  Scientists were able to create a manned robot which has a similar function to a mecha portrayed in various works of fictions, including the movie Avatar.

A team of engineers from the Hankook Mirae Technology company in South Korea has built a 13-feet tall manned robot named Method-2. The robot is controlled by a human pilot located in the cockpit inside the robot and can take several steps just like a human. However, it can be quite a hazard as weighs around 1.5 tons.

The Method-2 manned robot successfully completed its initial tests conducted by a team of 30 engineers from the robotics company during the afternoon of December 27. The Hankook Mirae Technology chairman, Yang Jin-Ho issued a statement claiming that the company’s robot is the first and only bipedal manned robot in the world. Method-2 was built with the purpose of working in conditions such as extreme hazards, where humans cannot go without adequate protection.

The manned robot closely resembles the military robots seen in the movie Avatar, when the pilot was placed inside the machine so that it can pilot it. The current Method-2 manned robot is still far from other giants manned robots, as it does even have the same functionality as the robots in Avatar who are lighter and respond more quickly to commands allowing the pilot for a greater flexibility.

Nonetheless, the Method-2 is able to mimic the pilot’s limb movements, despite its arms weighing around 286 pounds each and it around two times taller than the average height of a man. Due to its excessive weight, every time the robot takes a step the ground shakes and its many motors produce a loud whirring sound.

The manned robot costed around $200 million to develop since 2014, money invested by Yang as he wanted to his childhood dream of building a robot become a reality. The project was not without its challenges, as the size of the robot was at an unprecedented scale and they had no reference point in building it. Further research and development are still required on its power and balance systems.

Heart Attacks Spike During The Holiday Season

December 26, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Man having a heart attack

Americans are more likely to die of heart attacks during Christmas.

There are many years since the researchers have been trying to figure out why the number of heart attacks spike every Christmas season. Some believe that people have to deal with a tremendous amount of stress during this time of the year due to busy schedules.

Also, they are more likely to end up with food-borne illnesses caused by rich meals. Alcohol consumption can play a major role as well. In other words, all these factors combined might be associated with the elevated number of heart attacks in the United States.

Although during the winter months, the freezing temperatures can restrict blood vessels, the scientists have eliminated this possibility during the latest study. The team calculated the rates of heart attacks in New Zealand during the holiday season to see whether they were similar to the ones in the US.

They chose New Zealand because the country is smaller, so the researchers could track the population easier. Also, the winter in New Zealand is like the summer in the US. Plus, they celebrate Christmas on December 25th too.

The researchers analyzed the mortality rate of heart attacks in New Zealand between 1988 and 2013. Based on the estimates, the number of cardiovascular disease events increased by four percent during the holiday season outside of medical facilities.

In addition to this, the victims were slightly younger than those who died of similar causes over the course of the year. Previous studies have shown that the mortality rate of heart disease is five percent higher during the holiday season, including the Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

A group of British researchers monitored the mortality rate of cardiac events in England a decade ago, and they concluded that there was no spike in heart attacks during Christmas, but there was one on New Year’s Eve.

The scientists haven’t found a direct cause yet that might influence the increasing number of deaths caused by heart attacks during the holiday season. However, they have two possible theories.

People might postpone medical care this time of year because they are busy and they want to spend more time with their families. The problem is that some of them die in the meantime. The second theory might be that many hospitals lack qualified professionals.

Fitbit Charge 2 Gets New Features

December 23, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

black Fitbit Charge 2

Fitbit Charge 2 users will now benefit from a range of new features.

Fitbit fitness trackers are very popular among exercise and sports enthusiasts. Although Fitbit is in the process of finalizing the deal regarding the acquisition of Pebble, that doesn’t mean the company doesn’t have time to freshen up their line of Charge 2 fitness trackers with new features. The added functionality comes through a new software update released on Wednesday.

The Fitbit Charge 2 is the company’s flagship fitness tracker. When it was released back in September, it didn’t make much of splash on a market already overcrowded with smartwatches and other wearable devices. However, thanks to a new software update, Fitbit Charge 2 owners will receive a few new features, some of which have long been requested by users.

One of the most notable and long-requested features for Fitbit’s fitness trackers is the ability to pause and resume workouts. You can’t and you shouldn’t continuously exercise without a proper short-break. Until now, users had no way to pause their workouts, which seems like a simple function but one that took Fitbit quite some time to implement. The feature will allow you to track only the time when you are actively exercising.

Another new feature is the heart rate zone visualization which will show your exact heart rate zone during a multisport activity. This allows users to know exactly what they need to do get into the next zone.

Among the most overdue features which only now has been implemented is the battery indicator. Before the software update, users could only see the exact battery life of their Fitbit Charge fitness tracker through their smartphone app. Now, the device itself will include a battery indicator.

If you weren’t always able to synchronize your training with your pattern of breathing, then the new Fitbit Charge 2 feature can help you out. The device will produce a light buzzing sound when you need to inhale and exhale. This will allow users to focus more on the exercise. This feature is also complemented by a new do not disturb mode which will block all notifications.

Finally, the Fitbit Charge 2 will now display the time in hours, minutes, and seconds all the time, so you will have precise data regarding your training regiment.

Airline Pilots Commonly Experience Depression Symptoms

December 19, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

two airline pilots

A new study found that depression is common among airline pilots.

Depression is one of the most common mental health problems in the world, experienced by persons in various fields of work and from various demographics.  One field in which depression is common but patients don’t seek treatment is commercial flight companies, more specifically in airline pilots.

A study of depression in airline pilots was started after the murder-suicide of the pilot from the European airline Germanwings. The researchers were interested to discover how prevalent depression symptoms are in airline pilots.

For their study, the researchers recruited a number of 3,485 active airline pilots through emails, newsletter, postcards as well as advertisements. The participants were required to fill an anonymous health survey, consisting of various questions aimed to detect symptoms of depression.

After compiling all the data after an extensive analysis, the researchers revealed that out of all the airline pilots surveyed, a number of 426, or 13 percent of total, met the conditions for a depression diagnostic. Additionally, 75 pilots reported in the last two weeks they were thinking about self-harm or they had suicidal thoughts.

Although most of the airline pilots surveyed were men, the study found that among the four percent of female pilots, the depression rate was higher than in men. This trend is compatible with the rate seen in the general population. Overall, depression symptoms were more likely to occur in pilots who were on sleep-aid medication or verbally or sexually harassed. To make matters worse, the study found that all the participants were unlikely to seek treatment for their depression because they might lose their job.

The study was published Wednesday in the journal Environmental Health by a team of researchers led by Joseph G. Allen from Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He emphasized the fact that study should not undermine the public’s confidence in airline pilots.

Pilots are heavily vetted and monitored continuously throughout their career. Additionally, the FAA announced back in 2010, that pilots who suffer from mild depression will be able to continue flying as long as they are taking one of the four approved antidepressants for a period of 12 months with satisfactory results.

What do you think about the depression symptoms of airline pilots?

Isle Royale Wolf Population Might Be Saved

December 18, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Isle Royale wolf

Conservation efforts are being made to save the Isle Royale wolf population.

Managers of the Isle Royale National Park started to consider introducing thirty gray wolves because this predator species is threatened. The officials have three other options, and one of them involves relocating maximum 15 wolves to the park and many other over two decades.

Another option is to do nothing at the moment. Last but not least, the managers might do nothing to facilitate the recovery of the gray wolves. In this case, this species will disappear from the Isle Royale National Park because their numbers dropped down to just two inbred specimens over the past few years.

The four options are included in a report developed by researchers from the National Park Service, outside consultants, and other staff members. The officials will publicly announce their final decision after the three-month comment period which ends on the 15th of March.

Unfortunately, gray wolves are not endemic to the Isle Royale National Park. Furthermore, other species, including the lynx and caribou spent a longer period in this area before they were wiped out.

Wildlife biologists believe that the first gray wolves arrived at the Isle Royale area in the 1940s, after crossing the 15-mile surface of the frozen lake. Also, they might have come from Ontario or Minnesota too.

Most campers and visitors underline that this mysterious species must be preserved. Although this animal is widely popular, the managers said that they wouldn’t take this fact into consideration. They explained that they need to assess the advantages and disadvantages of introducing several gray wolves into the Isle Royale National Park.

Regardless of their decision, wolves have always had a major role in any given ecosystem. Starting from the 1920s, the experts believe that wolves have occasionally roamed in the park, especially during cold winters where the food was scarce.

As such, their presence in the park might have refreshed the gene pool. Still, the scientists underline that inbreeding had some long-term consequences as well. It is worth mentioning that the moose population has increased over the past few years as there are over 1,200 specimens in the park.

In other words, the wildlife biologists point to the fact that the gray wolves would keep the moose numbers in check and prevent them from damaging the trees of the Isle Royale National Park.

Psychiatric Drugs Taken By 17% of Adult Americans

December 14, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

psychiatric drugs

A new study found that almost 17% of American adults take psychiatric drugs to treat one of these conditions.

While the opioid epidemic is getting worse a new study discovered that more and more adults in the US are taking psychiatric drugs. These types of drugs are used to treat conditions like anxiety, insomnia, and depression. More and more American adults suffer from depression and anxiety, thus contributing to the increased use of prescription phychiatric drugs.

A new study found that almost 17% of American adults take psychiatric drugs to treat one of these conditions. This is concerning because it shows that people are more stressed and they are developing mental conditions. This could lead to worse conditions like dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Another problem with the fact that 1 in 6 adults are taking psychiatric drugs is the side effects. Every drug has side effects but these drugs tend to have more than usual pills. First of all, people can get addicted to these drugs and the side effects caused by psychiatric drugs can be long-term ones.

Experts mentioned that people can be affected even after giving up these drugs because they have withdrawal effects. Once a person gives up on psychiatric drugs, the individual in question might feel even worse than before taking these drugs.

The study also showed that women are more likely to take this type of drugs. 1 in 5 women mentioned that they are taking psychiatric drugs. When it comes to men, they tend to think twice before taking drugs.

White men and women were more likely to take these drugs than Hispanics and Afro-Americans. The researcher also discovered that older people tend to take more pills. This survey was made in 2013 and it continued in 2014 to see if people quit their prescription drugs or continue to take them. A lot of people continued the treatment and even added other drugs.

This study should be a wake-up call for doctors because they need to be more careful when they prescribe this type of drugs. It is important to know exactly what your patients need and want. Doctors who prescribed psychiatric drugs like Xanax and Zoloft need to check on their patients regularly. Side effects should be monitored carefully.

Google Signs Cuba Deal for Faster Internet

December 13, 2016 By Karen Jackson 1 Comment

Havana, Cuba

Google’s Cuba deal improves internet speed to users of Google services.

Google has announced it has signed a new deal on Monday with Cuba’s state-run telecommunications firm in order to move a few of its server on the island nation. This will speed up the internet access to Cubans who will access YouTube and various other Google sites and products.

Google has made some strides in Cuba as the Obama administration worked to re-open diplomatic relations with the country, after their Cold-War dispute. Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO was present in Havana this Monday in order to sign the Cuba deal with Mayra Arevich Marin, which is the president of the country’s State Enterprise Telecommunications. The company, also known as ETECSA, handles all the phone and internet services in Cuba.

The Cuba deal will lead to Google’s deployment of its Global Cache service to the island nation. This will reduce the time it takes content which requires high-bandwidth content to load. It’s able to speed up internet access by storing data on servers placed in secure centers on the island. Google has previously made available to Cubans their Chrome browser as well as the Google Play music service.

Despite improving the internet speed of Cuban internet users for Google services, this deal won’t actually expand the number of internet users in the country. Freedom House estimates that between 5 to 30 percent of Cuba’s population have access to the internet. The country is among the most restrictive when it comes to providing the service to its population.

ETECSA has launched several wi-fi hotspots around Cuba’s largest cities. The state-run telecom company is also experimenting with providing internet access directly into the homes of Cubans. The service has only started this year and there have been reports that it costs a few hundreds of dollars a month.

Nonetheless, Google’s Cuba deal lays the foundation for an expansion of the country’s internet infrastructure, which will eventually lead to a drop in price as well. This, in turn, will allow for a greater percent of the population to benefit from having internet service. However, Cuba has been somewhat reticent about the intentions of US companies, fearing that they will threaten the country national security.

What do you think about Google’s Cuba deal?

Contaminated Water from Fukushima Reaches US West Coast

December 12, 2016 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Fukushima power plant

Contaminated water from Fukushima has reached the United States.

Five years after the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima plant in Japan caused by a tsunami, which led to contaminated water leaking into the ocean, which it seems to have reached the shores of the west coast of the United States.

Seaborne radiation from the Fukushima disaster has been detected for the very first time near the US, by researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. They reported that a compound known as cesium-134, classified as the fingerprint of the Fukushima plant, was detected in the water retrieved from the Tillamook Bay and Gold Beach in the state of Oregon.

Woods Hole is part of a collaboration of scientific and non-profit organizations known as the Fukushima InFORM. This institution has monitored the course of the radiation plume from Fukushima as it made its way across the Pacific through the oceanic currents. To make matters worse, cesium-134 has also been detected in salmon from Canadian waters.

Researchers were quick to state that the levels of radiation detected in the water do not pose any danger to people or the environment. The levels of cesium-134 were very low and thus, unable to harm anyone who decides to take a swim in those waters or eat the sea life from the region. Scientists emphasized the fact that the radiation levels from a single X-ray are 1,000 times stronger than the radiation you would be subjected to if you swim every day for an entire year into the particular waters.

The same status also applies to the Canadian salmon, which the researchers involved with the InFORM project reported to have found in the Okanagan Lake. Despite testing positive for cesium-134, the levels are a thousand times lower than the standard set by Health Canada.

The Fukushima Dai-chi incident was the biggest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl and was caused by a 9.0 earthquake and the tsunami that followed it. Despite the dangers posed by the radiation, no direct casualty was ever discovered. However, the nuclear disaster led to an increase in cancer deaths in the following. The estimated number of deaths are between 130 and 640.  A new report from 2015 revealed that 137 children from the region, were found to have thyroid cancer.
