Peek in your neighbor’s yard with the DJI beginner drone

August 6, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Peek in your neighbor's yard with the DJI beginner drone

Ever wondered what decorating style your neighbor chose for his garden? The new DJI beginner drone is quickly becoming known as highly accessible, intuitive and easy to control.

The DJI Phantom 3 Standard was designed with first time drone pilots in mind. Based on the DJI Phantom 3 Professional and Phantom 3 Advanced, the drone manufacturer strove to come out with a new model that would enable drone newbies to explore their curiosities without having to break the bank.

Let’s take a look at the more technical stuff. The DJI beginner drone can record clips at thirty frames per second with a high quality ninety four degree distortion free lens. You’ll get 12 megapixels photos both in DNG RAW and JPG. And you can use your wireless connection to see almost in real time what your camera sees with the DJI Go app.

This sounds like a futuristic description from a sci fi book by Philip K Dick, but with drones becoming more and more accessible to the public, we’re probably going to have many of them flying over our heads soon.

DJI’s latest model also comes with an updated remote controller. This is an upgraded version of the DJI Phantom 2 Vision remote controller. As newly added features, it has an incorporated wifi range extender as well as a wheel that allows the users to angle the camera faster and easier.

What else does DJI Phantom 3 Standard include? It has GPS stabilization and can fly for twenty five minutes due to the interchangeable Intelligent Flight Batteries that were especially created for the Phantom 3 series.

The “Follow Me” intelligent feature of the DJI beginner drone will have the Phantom 3 Standard following the user or an object chosen by the pilot. With the Waypoint Navigation the user will be able to set a route for the drone with various points of interest.

The DJI beginner drone will proceed to fly in circles around the requested object and will frame it in the center of the shot. You’ll be left with a beautiful cinematic video that is almost impossible to capture manually.

The quadcopter Standard version of the DJI drone costs $799 and can shoot 2.7k video, surpassing the 1080p video clips his predecessor, the Phantom 3 Advanced, can shoot.

If you’ve been planning a wedding and you just need that aerial shot in your wedding movie, then you might want to look for a photographer who owns the Phantom 3 DJI drone. And if you feel more adventurous, you can try it yourself, trusting the accessibility and stability of the DJI beginner drone.

Mazda MX-5 Miata Roadster To Launch In 2016 in the US

July 27, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

MAZDA MX-5 MIATA

The Mazda MX-5 Miata Roadster is set to launch in 2016 in the US, and it will cost $25,000.

In 1989, the car-manufacturer took a gamble and released their first iteration of the Mazda Miata. Now, years later, the Mazda Miata Roadster is one of the most loved, and hip vehicles on the market.

The Mazda MX-5 Miata is the fourth generation Miata to see the light of day.

Sure, it’s not the most powerful car, but it’s stylish as hell. Just take a look at a couple of pictures down below, and see for yourself.

MAZDA MX-5 MIATA

The car-manufacturer made their next gen. Miata Roadster weigh less than their previous model, 150 pounds less to be exact, and they managed to also make it more spacious. More room to add luggage for that trip to the Grand Canyon you’ve been planning for ages.

Manager Rod McLaughlin, who is in charge o Mazda’s North American vehicle line is confident that their MX-5 Miata will be a big hit in 2016, and that their fans will fall in love with their new car.

Reports show that the Miata is the most loved Roadster in the states.

MAZDA MX-5 MIATA

For the moment, reviews for the Mazda MX-5 Miata Roadster are overwhelmingly positive, but only a handful of people have had the opportunity to test the new, unreleased, car.

Mazda recommends drivers to get accustomed with their manual drive transmission, but this isn’t to say that the MX-5 Miata doesn’t have an optional automatic transmission – of course, it will cost you more.

The manual transmission MX-5 Miata will weigh 2,332 pounds, and the automatic one stands at 2,381 pounds..

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The MX-5 Miata can go up to $30,000. The base Sport model will cost Mazda enthusiasts $24,915, while the next model, dubbed The Club, will stand at $28,600.

The most expensive Miata model will be the Grand Touring and will cost $30,000. The motive being that Mazda added black leather interiors, rain sensing wipers, blind spot warnings, and smart keyless entry – plus other new high-tech features.

MAZDA MX-5 MIATA

The brand new Miata model will have 155 horsepower, and the company has noted that they don’t want to be the fastest Roadster, but instead, they want to be the most loved vehicle. In Europe, and Japan, the MX-5 will be equipped with a 1.5 liter engine. In the states it will have a 2.0 liter SKYACTIV engine.

It’s going to be more fuel efficient that the latest model, the company states.

You Should Go Update Windows Right Now!

July 21, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Windows Security Breach

Usually, Microsoft tends to push Windows updates once a month, on a Tuesday – little fixes here, and there. But when you get an urgent update on a Monday, that Microsoft deems Critical, you know something has gone terribly wrong. But what?

Well, there’s a huge hole in the security of your Windows OS, that allows hackers to take complete control, remotely I may add, of your PC, through a font. It’s a bug of sorts that the Windows team just completely a) forgot to fix, or b) didn’t even know it existed until now.

Through Windows custom fonts, a hacker can input code in your machine – let’s say that you search Google for whatever, and you go beyond page number 20 where the shady bunch of websites reside. You click on the URL for a website, and your done for, because the hacker can use the custom font, even a document, to hack away at your beloved personal data.

Windows 10 also has this critical bug

This Critical Bug was also found in the latest Windows 10 Test Builds.

Another reason to fear Comic Sans, right?

This update is urgent, and it does require a restart. Back-up your data, perform the update, and go on with your life.

Windows custom fonts have been co-developed by Microsoft, and Adobe. Go figure, Adobe is screwing up again. Can we all just agree that we need a new Flash that isn’t the equivalent to a latent disease, and also, a new company that does the exact thing as Adobe, but without screwing up big time?

The security flaw was noticed by security company FireEye, and it’s team comprised of Genwei Jiang and Mateusz Jurczyk. FireEye is Google’s S.H.I.E.L.D. – actually, they are called Project Zero, and they are in charge of discovering security flaws, and how hackers can breach their OS.

Your Windows PC will Restart in T minus 13 minutes

If you see this prompted, click on restart before you save all of your information!

This is bad news for Microsoft. Their new Windows 10 OS is just about to hit its release date on the 29th of July, and reports have it that this critical bug has been found in the final test builds of M’s new, unreleased, OS – test builds which are considered to be the end-product that will ship on the 29th.

The company continues to note that no Windows PC has been found to be a victim of such an attack, but you should update right now – better to be safe, than sorry, right?!

New Microsoft Windows!

Windows 10 will be released on the 29th of July.

If you want to read more about the issue, and its technical details, visit Microsoft’s official security bulletin page.

If you have Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8, and 8.1 update your PC now!

So, are you going to upgrade for FREE on the 29th of July to Windows 10? Or are you like me, and you’re going to wait to see what compatibility issues, if there are any, come up?

Aston Martin and its $2.3 Million Hypercar

June 30, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Aston Martin Vulcan

Aston Martin has built a $2.3 million hypercar – if you’re in love with carbon fiber, I have some pretty good news for you.

The only way to build super fast, super light, and mind blastingly expensive cars is to go the carbon fiber way – which is also stronger than steel by the way.

Well, Aston Martin’s new hypercar named Vulcan is a track-dedicated vehicle, unlike the McLaren P1, and Ferrari LaFerrari – which are also built out of carbon fiber, but not entirely. The Vulcan – I love the name – doesn’t have the unnecessary things like leather interiors, and paint, air conditioning, and radio. After all, it’s made for the tracks.

Aston Martin’s Vulcan isn’t street legal, so if you’re thinking to buy one to show off around the block, think again – manufacturer Aston Martin even charges you extra because they are illegal.

Aston Martin Vulcan

At the beginning of 2015, Aston Martin announced that they are building a hypercar that will sell for $2.6 million, and the company recommends potential buyers to first try out the 540-horsepower V12 Vantage S so they can get accustomed to what the Vulcan may feel like.

Aston Martin says that the following specifications aren’t final, but you should expect something on these lines.

  • 800-horsepower;
  • 7-liter V12 engine;
  • 0-60 in less than three seconds;
  • Top speed of 200 mph;

Now, the Aston Martin Vulcan isn’t the most expensive hypercar available on the market. McLaren has a $3.3 million car, sorry, not car, but behemoth named P1 GTR. And Ferrari has a tiny little automobile called the FXX K that can output 1000 horsepower. Sheesh, and here’s me with my 130 horsepower Ford Mondeo just inhaling all the dust.

Aston Martin Vulcan

Aston just showcased the interior of their new hypercar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England – an event where a company shows off their expensive automobile, so wealthy British people buy their stuff. Yay for being so rich you don’t even care about money when you buy a $3 million car that you can’t even drive on the road like normal people do – ” but mom, now I need a track for my new car, you can’t leave me hanging like this, what will the other oligarchs think of me?!” says a filthy rich 1 percent’er.

But in al fairness, the Aston Martin Vulcan looks superb – it’s what Bruce Wayne would buy for his alter-ego Batman. No, sorry, it’s what Bruce Wayne would build for Bats.

Aston Martin Vulcan

There are only 24-limited edition Aston Martin Vulcans available at the moment, so you better head down real quick to your car dealership and tell them you want the new Vulcan. But seriously, it’s most likely that it will sell immediately.

If you want to compete in Le Mans, go for it. If you want to compete in the neighbourhood who gets to the super-market first, methinks it’s a little bit of an overkill.

Google Play Music is Now Free, Sort Of, In America

June 24, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Google Play Music

Google Play Music is now kinda’ free for users residing in America, but it’s ad supported following Spotify’s model.

Google couldn’t have announced this at a better time, for them. Apple Music is almost a week away from us, and Google announcing this new option for their music streaming service might cripple Apple’s  plans of dominating the market. Sure, it’s going to be ad supported, you can’t use the service in offline mode, and it excludes some songs from its repertoire.

The free version will consist of curated playlists, which are tailored for different parts of the day – I don’t think you want to hear melodic death metal just before you go to sleep.

Google Play Music, the free version, will run on Google-owned Songza radio app – which the big G bought last year.

Google Play Music

Google product manager Elias Roman said that – ” Even if you’re not already a Google Play Music subscriber, we’ve got you covered. Google Play Music now has a free, ad-supported version in the US, giving you a new way to find just the right music – and giving artists another way to earn revenue. The new free, ad-supported version of Google Play Music is launching first in the US. It’s available on the web today, and is rolling out this week to Android and iOS. “

With Apple Music launching on the 30th of June, Google might have just shifted some of the hype towards them. It wouldn’t have been such a big news if Apple Music wasn’t launching, but Google knows that timing is essential.

Google Play Music might just beat Apple Music

Audiophiles might just join Google Play Music after having but a taste of what the music streaming service is all about – the monthly subscription costs $10.

According to reports, Google Play Music had around 815,000 paying subscribers in the US last December.

The free option for Google Play Music doesn’t seem to be expanding to other countries anytime soon, but their paid subscription is already available in 52 countries across the world.

Apple Music is already facing some serious issues, but the whole scandal with Taylor Swift was the cherry on top. I know, they twisted it around, but does it seriously take a huge artist to pull its most popular album, Taylor’s 1989, for Apple to realize that not paying royalties to musicians for the first three months of the free trial is just plain absurd?

The shame Apple, the shame.

Taylor Swift Apple Scandal

Taylor Swift Apple Scandal

We should be happy that the competition is so big – this means that we, the users, should get only the best quality of service.

I’m a fan of Google Play Music, but I’ll definitely try Apple Music out to see what’s it all about – hey, free three months!

What about you? Are you sticking with Google Play Music? Or are you switching to Apple Music? Tell us in the comments section below!

The DxO One Turns Your iPhone Into a DSLR

June 19, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

DxO One Camera

The DxO One is an awesome add-on that can make your iPhone shoot DSLR-quality photographs.

We all take a ton of pictures on a monthly basis – whether we’re taking pics of our loved ones, or just quickly snapping something funny that you’ve witnessed on your daily commute. At the current moment, we don’t need to worry that our pics will be pixelated, and indescribable because the market is saturated with devices that offer average camera units.

But none of the smartphones on the market can output a DSLR-quality photo.

DxO One pic sample

Shot with a DxO One camera

Here’s where the DxO One comes in handy. It’s due to be released this Fall, and the digital image processing company that is behind the DxO One states that it’s going to be pocket-sized, and it’s going to connect easily to your iPhone, or iPad device – you pair them using your Lightning connector.

Basically, the DxO One uses your iPhone, or iPad, as a viewfinder. The company is promising DSLR-quality photos, but this won’t come cheap. The DxO One is going to cost $599. Yikes! That’s quite expensive. The company states that their little pocket friendly camera will compete with full-sized mirrorless cameras.

Here’s another sample of the quality that it can output:

DxO One Camera

Shot with a DxO One camera

The camera is super light weighing at about 3.8-ounces, and measuring 2.65-inches tall. The cherry on top is its camera unit that features a 20.2 megapixel sensor, and because it’s paired with an f/1.8 lens, it can compete with 32mm-equivalent lens’.

The DxO One is going to come with its very own Apple app. You can use it to change the ISO, and the aperture, as well as swivelling the camera when it’s connected to your iPhone, or iPad, in order to take photos from different perspectives. Don’t forget those awesome DSLR-quality selfies. Also, you can shoot video at 1080p.

Shot with a DxO One camera

The photos you take are stored on DxO One’s microSD card, but you can easily transfer them to your device of choice.

If you jump on the bandwagon and pre-order the DxO One now, you can get the company’s very own image processing software for free.

Now, the DxO One doesn’t have a flash of its own, and it will use your iPhone’s, or iPad’s flash, but the company noted that the camera will work perfectly in a low light setting. I haven’t tested it yet, and all we have are these photos that the company has released. They look pretty good, but it isn’t the first time a company has lied to sell their product.

Google Owned Nest Labs Launches Nest Cam

June 18, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Google-owned Nest Labs

Google-owned Nest Labs, which is their smart-home automation company, has just announced Nest Cam.

Nest Labs has been working hard on improving their already released products to better suite smart-home dwellers, and in addition to that, the company just announced their new home-monitoring camera. It has a microphone, speakers, motion-sensors, and night-vision – to ensure that everything is safe 24/7.

The Nest Cam was built-upon Dropcam’s highly applauded top-quality camera – a company which Nest Labs acquired last Summer for the sum of $555 million.

It shoots 1080p video with the help of a wide-angled lens, and a three megapixel sensor. If you’re having problems with your storage capacity, Nest Labs offers a new cloud service that will be fully integrated with their Nest Cam. It’s called Nest Aware and it will cost you an additional monthly subscription – $15 to $45 depending on what plan you may choose.

Meet The Nest Cam

Meet The Nest Cam

Considering the fact that the Nest Cam retails at $310, I say that it comes down to the almost expensive kind. Sure, there are a ton of other high-definition cameras available, but how many of them are going to help smart-home owners?

The Google-owned company also announced a new addition to their fire safety product line – a redesigned version of their Protect line includes sensors that can detect fire, smoke, and CO2 emissions.

Also the company has announced that major improvements were made regarding their software. Nest’s 2011 original thermostat software received an upgrade. Nest also notes that the company’s mobile app has been updated to the 5.0 version – improvements have been made, and now a smart-home owner can control and interact with Net’s suite of products more easily.

Nest Thermostat

“At Nest, we always wanted to build more than a thermostat. Our vision was to create a thoughtful home, a home that takes care of itself and the people in it. Five years later, all the pieces are in place.” said Tony Fadell, now the chief executive of Nest, and one of the co-founders, along with Matt Rogers. They launched the company in 2010, and last year it was acquired by Google for $3 billion.

” We have three products today, they work well on their own, they work better together, and they work great with third-party products.” noted Lionel Paillet, Nest’s general manager for Europe.

The Internet of Things has seen a major growth in the past year, and more and more manufacturers are working towards developing internet-connected devices.

The key players still remain Google, and Apple. Both recently announcing improvements in the area – Google launched Brillo, which is an operating system designed for connected devices, and Apple detailing their HomeKit framework designed for communicating, and controlling connected accessories.

Google is Set to Launch YouTube Gaming for Streamers

June 15, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

YouTube Gaming to launch this Summer

Google has just officially announced that they will tackle video game streaming with their new YouTube Gaming. It feels like a direct attack to Twitch and their service.

Google’s new platform will add all of Twitch’s features, while sporting a few new ideas of its own. Gamers will be able to share their original content as easily as they would have on Twitch.

YouTube Gaming is set to launch sometime this Summer, and users can be a part of the new platform by sharing Let’s Play content, and other live streams, in a different hub – separate from YouTube itself.

According to product manager Alan Joyce, and his statement on the YouTube official blog – ” YouTube Gaming is built to be all about favorite games and gamers, with more videos than anywhere else. From Asteroids to Zelda, more than 25,000 games will each have their own page, a single place for all the best videos and live streams about that titles. You’ll also find channels from a wide array of game publishers and YouTube creators.”

YouTube Gaming to launch this Summer

Alan also added that their new platform will be centred around live streaming, but the company doesn’t discourage gamers to upload their original content. As you might have known already, YouTube Gaming will let gamers easily live stream at 60 frames per second, automatically converting their video without problems.

The platform’s in-built search engine will be modified around games, so if you are to search for Lego, you’ll get Lego Worlds, and other Lego related game results, and not videos about the real-life Lego bricks.

YouTube Gaming will be Twitch’s direct challenger, which is now the go-to place for video-game streamers around the world. Twitch is owned by Amazon, and their latest report states that they have a monthly audience of over 100 million viewers at the end of 2014.

Google will be present at this year’s E3 conference, and they will most likely detail their new live streaming platform. What we do know at the moment is that their new service will be launched in the US, and UK. For those of you living in Europe, don’t despair, the platform will come eventually – maybe even at the end of 2015, but rumours have it that it will be released sometime in the early 2016.

Will PewDiePie join YouTube Gaming?

PewDiePie is the most known Let’s Play streamer.

It is unknown at the moment if Google will offer this service to Asia, Australia, or other zones.

If you want to be notified about details regarding YouTube Gaming, follow their official channel on Twitter – it’s up and running!

I can’t wait to stream playing The Witcher 3 – I need to let people know how much Roach sucks, and what a bad horsey he is!

Are you going to change venues from Twitch to YouTube? Tell us in the comments section below!

HP Sprout Just Turned Into the Most Affordable 3D Scanner!

June 12, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

HP Sprout

So the HP Sprout just turned into the most affordable 3D scanner – the 3D high-quality Capture Stage will sell starting this July for $299.

Hewlett-Packard knows what’s up. The 3D printing trend isn’t a trend at all. It feels more like an industrial revolution – although it isn’t.

HP will start selling the Capture Stage accessory this July for their Sprout PC that will allow it to act as a functional 3D scanner – highly accurate, and reliable.

How does HP’s new accessory work? Well, the circular stand 3D Capture Stage will be located at the base of the HP Sprout PC exactly under its RealSense 3D Camera. HP’s device will capture up to eight separate scans that will be blended into a 3D image – it’s angled at 15 degrees, and it will slowly rotate in order to output the best quality possible.

HP Sprout Capture Stage limitations

After you get your desired result, you can shape the 3D images in any way you want. HP Sprout features a touch sensitive Touch Mat surface that allows the user to manipulate objects by turning them around, reshaping them, changing their colour, and even cropping them. Afterwards, you can export the data to a 3D modelling program like Autodesk’s Meshmixer or Microsoft’s 3D Builder.

At $299 it makes it one of the most affordable 3D scanners, but it still feels a little bit expensive for a bunch of plastic with a motor inside. But even so, it can tremendously help engineers and animators that use the HP Sprout – although, it’s mostly aimed at hobbyists and enthusiasts. If you plan on working on a prestigious project you’ll need more than a $299 3D scanner.

HP has stated that objects can’t be larger than 200 millimetres along any side, limiting it vastly. Hewlett-Packard offered Claymation models as the best example for their Capture Stage 3D scanner.

HP Sprout turns into an affordable 3D scanner

This isn’t the first time HP is meddling with this kind of technology. Recently, they’ve been experimenting with their 23.6-inch Zvr monitors that would allow its users to blend reality by modifying objects right in front of them in thin-air – you just need to use a stylus and wear a pair of 3D glasses.

Killing two birds with one stone, HP is tackling virtual reality and augmented reality and at the same time it tries to offer 3D printing enthusiasts the possibility of acquiring affordable gear. Their ultimate goal is to add 3D printing, and virtual reality support to every device they produce. Quite a hefty goal if you ask me.

Microsoft just announced their partnership with Facebook-owned Oculus Rift, and they too are trying to blend real worlds with the virtual ones into the mainstream computing medium.

Are you going to buy the 3D scanner for your HP Sprout PC?

The Best Budget 3D Printers Available Right Now!

June 8, 2015 By Nancy Young 1 Comment

Built using 3D Printers

3D Printers are more affordable than ever. Science-fiction is a thing of the past when talking about 3D Printers, and 2015 seems to have hit the 3D printing  trend right on its head. If you’re somewhat curious about what it’s all about, but you’re on a budget, you’ve come to the right place.

There are so many 3D printers to choose from, but you need to know that each and everyone of them can help you build jewellery, spare parts, toys, and even prosthetics – to name just a few things that you can do with a budget 3D printer. Yes, you read that right – a budget 3D printer.

Sure, the cheapest 3D printer won’t have that many features as one of the top-shelf printers on the market, but that’s why I’m going to talk about budget ones.

Affordable 3D Printers

I’m usually asked – Hey Nancy, how do 3D printers work? – How to use a 3D printer? or How much is a 3D printer? – What should I buy Nancy?

I *sigh* a little and then I start ranting. First off, you should get it out of your head that there’s no such thing as the best 3D printer on the market, and 3D printer companies are somewhat circle jerking amongst themselves – the consensus is that nobody is going to catch us selling something that the average Joe can do by his own. Still, somehow, advancements are being made, and that’s why we’re witnessing 3D printers at the low price of $600.

3D Printers that shape food

I’ve even been asked if there is such a thing as a 3D food printer. Laughs all round the table of course, but you will be shocked when you hear that the answer is – Yes, there are 3D food printers, but not how you imagine them. There are quite a lot out there, and they give food a new shape, they can colour the food, and you can eat your results without having to worry that you’ll need your stomach pumped.

This 3D food printer – that we won’t talk about, because it’s frikin’ expensive; something on the line of $5000 – blends sugar, milk powder, cocoa powder, and cocoa butter to create sweet looking candy figures. Check the YouTube clip, but be warned, your taste buds will scream!

It’s kinda important that you know how 3D printers work, so we’re going to get through the basics before talking about what budget 3D printers you can buy.

How do 3D printers work?

How do 3D Printers work?

The additive manufacturing, known as 3D printing uses something called additive processes – in which the desired object is built by the machine by creating a succession of layers until the object is built.

3D printers give everyday people the possibility of creating outstanding stuff – as an FYI, someone made a prosthetic limb for his daughter; a prosthetic limb that would normally cost around $5000 was made out of $1000 materials.

3D Printers can create prosthetics

Before you start giving life to your dreams, you should know that if you buy a 3D printer it won’t magically print what you want. It prints virtual design, made in a CAD file – that is a Computer Aided Design. You need a 3D modelling program like AutoCAD, Blender, Autodesk 123D, Cinema 4D, Photoshop CC, Autodesk Maya, and the list can go on and on.

OR

You can buy a 3D scanner, and scan the object that you want to copy – and later on, you can alter it in your desired program. Now, 3D scanners use a different technology that lets them generate 3D models such as time-of-flight, structured / modulated light, volumetric scanning and other things that when heard prompt me to think of science-fiction. But the tale of how I’m deeply in love with Frank Herbert is for another time.

3D Printers can use 3D scanners such as Microsoft Kinect

Companies, that you have surely heard about, have enabled their hardware to perform 3D scans. Microsoft’s Kinect can be used as a 3D scanner, so if you have one, tinker with it a little bit, and make your dreams come true.

Here’s how your average 3D scanner works.

In the near future, we’ll see a diy 3D printer that gets its virtual design from smartphones. Just point your iPhone at an object, scan it, and voilà, you can have your every own girlfriend, or boyfriend, or even both – I don’t judge!

3D printers don’t usually use the same technology, and there are up to 7 processes according to the American Society for Testing and Materials group ASTM F42 – Additive Manufacturing:

  • Vat Photopolymerisation
  • Material Jetting
  • Binder Jetting
  • Material Extrusion
  • Powder Bed Fusion
  • Sheet Lamination

Because there are so many processes, and because they are best used for creating different things we have things like a metal 3D printer, and a resin 3D printer.

For more information about the seven processes for 3D printing, I highly recommend this wiki article.

In 2013, the 3D printing industry was worth $3.07B, and it’s expect to rise up to $12B in 2018, and exceed worldwide revenue of $21B by 2020.

The Best 3D Printing Service?

3D Printers are accessible to everyone!

There are really great ones out there, and I really can’t pinpoint the best 3D printing service, but here’s a list of companies that offer this kind of service:

  • Sculpteo
  • Ponoko
  • Shapeways
  • 3ders

The consensus on the internet is that they are the best at their job. Haven’t tried them, but as long as you give them the 3D printer files, you shouldn’t have a problem. Come to think of it, you don’t even need 3D printer files, you can just select a bunch of stuff from their library. 3D printing aficionados praise them to be the best inexpensive 3D printer services.

Also, if you plan on creating designs for people to build, you can share them on Shapeways’ library, and get some nice bucks flowing.

Without further ado I present you…

The Best Budget 3D Printers

Let’s start with one of my favourites.

Printbot Simple Metal

One of the best 3D Printers on the market

One of the cheapest 3D printer on the market that costs about $599. Also, it’s one of the best 3D printers on the market best suited for the average Joe. It’s recommended for everyone.

Printbot is one of the pioneers that helped pave the way of 3D printing, and way back in 2011, its Kickstarter campaign was one of the most successful projects of the year – 3D printing wise.

Printbot is known as the best affordable 3D printer, and Simple Metal is the upgraded version of its first iteration.  It now comes with a power-coated steel frame, and an aluminium extruder – the build volume is more than enough for the average home 3D printer aficionado, and it goes up to 150 x 150 x 150.

One of the best 3D Printers on the market

The standard version could only print using PLA, but Simple Metal can be upgraded, and if you wish to do so, you can create designs that will work perfectly with ABS.

This 3D printer kit is open source, and it has one huge community behind it, meaning that users can choose from a wide array of add-ons, and of course, open source software. Being so loved by the 3D printing community, you have access to a ton of documentation, technical support, advanced modifications, and a ton of free guides.

It’s one of the most tweakable 3D printers on the market.

But it isn’t all rainbows and butterflies, it does have its weak points like having a horrid initial setup. I say horrid because it ain’t the easiest printer to use, and calibration can take a couple of hours – up to 8 if you aren’t accustomed to 3D printers. Sure, there is a ton of documentation, but that won’t help you that much at first.

One of the best 3D Printers on the market

Also, users have reported encountering issues with nozzle jams, and feeder problems – it ain’t considered the most reliable 3D printer.

What you need to know is that it’s a cheap printer, that would most definitely suit your every newbie needs.

  • Pros

– Superb build quality

– Superb print quality

– Awesome community

  • Cons

– Print speed

– Print volume

Sharebot KIWI

One of the best 3D Printers on the market

The $860 price tag won’t hurt your wallet that much, and if you have the money I highly recommend buying this out of all the 3D printers on the market. The Sharebot KIWI isn’t that really known outside of Italy, but fortunately for us, those outside of Europe will soon have access to this beautiful beast.

Arduino will start selling world-wide the rebranded, refurbished version called Arduino Materia 101 printer.

The build area consists of 140 x 100 x 100, and setup is pretty easy, and straightforward – it’s no rocket science. It uses the config files for the well known open source Slic3r engine – it’s great when using it for advanced builds also.

Users have reported great build quality, and low failure rate – this is an important feature. Nobody wants to constantly build something that will result in a chipped end-product.

One of the best 3D Printers on the market

Although the Sharebot Kiwi one of the most reliable 3D printers on the market, because it has such a low volume build, it will put a major dent in your projects – it limits you to small builds. It doesn’t even have a heated bed, and this adds to its limitations.

I highly recommend this open source 3D printer if you just started meddling with 3D printing and the likes.

  • Pros

– Great build quality

– Great print quality

– Low material costs

  • Cons

– Absence of a heated bed

– Print volume

– Print speed

FlashForge Creator

One of the best 3D Printers on the market

If you are accustomed to the Makerbot 3D printer, then you’ll have no problems with the FlashForge Creator, because it builds on top of it. The FlashForge is a modified version of the original Makerbot, and it continues to use the same open source Replicator – only now, it features a remodelled laser cut wood frame.

Pretty great build volume that stands tall at  225 x 145 x 150, and it also has a heated build plate, a dual extruder, and on board controls.

It costs about $950, and the builds will satisfy the more enthusiastic 3D printers out there, and the community is known as one of the most vibrant and helpful bunch. Questions are answered promptly, and with sufficient details that even the noobiest noob will understand.

One of the best 3D Printers on the market

Really great quality builds, and owners of the FlashForge Creator have stated that their 3D printer has kept going even after years of use, with low failure rates – something in the 10% margins.

But, time is showing its mark, and the Creator can seem a little bit out-dated at times – precision, speed and calibration surely lack when you compare it with newly released, cheaper 3D printers.

  • Pros

– Good build quality

– Good print quality

– Low material costs

– Heated bed

– Dual extruder

  • Cons

– Low speed

– Botched precision

– Annoying when calibrating

– It feels out-dated

– Super Noisy

UP Mini

One of the best 3D Printers on the market

Considered the best home 3D printer, the UP Mini is recommended for beginners, and intermediates, and will cost you about $600. Even though it’s noisy as hell, it’s rather small for what it offers, and the average home user can get all the bang from his buck.

It comes from China, and its build volume consists of 120 x 120 x 120 – with not that many features to applaud. But it does have a great closed enclosure, and its perforated heated build plate comes in handy, and provides compatibility for ABS and PLA.

The easy to use, personal home 3D printer outputs top-shelf build quality, and the community has reported low failure rates that reside in the 10% margins. Also, maintenance isn’t that needed, and owners have reported that after a year of intensive use, the UP Mini acts like brand new.

One of the best 3D Printers on the market

But, for it to be the best personal home 3D printer, it had to sacrifice in some areas like its build volume, which is rather low. Sure, as a budget 3D printer, best suited for beginners, it’s okay, but if you plan on building bigger designs, you’ll be out of luck – also because it slightly warps the design.

  • Pros

– Good build quality

– Good print quality

– Easy setup

  • Cons

– Small build volume

– Really noisy

– Good luck finding materials

And this is the end to our article about the best budget 3D printers available right now. Keep checking back on us, because we will most likely update the least with budget 3D printers.
