Ice Wheels Lexus NX

December 22, 2015 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

One of the ice wheels Lexus NX sculptors.

It’s the season to be jolly, and Lexus, the Japanese car company, certainly had some jolly good time with their latest marketing stunt, involving their Lexus NX model.

You see, most automakers would give a polite nod to the Winter Holidays by making a winter-themed add, or maybe adding some visual elements to some of their models, etc.

Not Lexus. They thought such things are a bit passé. So they took the bold and engineering-wise problematic decision to replace the wheels on one of their NX cars with ice wheels.

And no, that’s not some fancy euphemism, metaphor or plain exaggeration. They actually replaced the original wheels with ones made entirely of ice.

More so, the car was meant to be driven around on said wheels, which it was.

Now, granted, the driving itself took place in a controlled environment within a place warded off from the public and it wasn’t quite fast (more like parking speed). But that’s due to the fact that the wheels had to bear the 2 ton car on top of them, so it’s understandable why the company and driver weren’t really keen for any racing, despite the acrylics that were put inside the wheels to make them more solid and capable of bearing the load.

Anyway, the transition of the ice wheels Lexus NX from a nice concept to reality wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of 4 master ice sculptors which worked an average of 36 hours on each wheel. They are all part of a company with 35 years of specialized expertise in this field, the “Hamilton Ice Sculptors”.

The finished ice wheels resembled the original ones up to tiny details like the tread pattern, because they were built using laser scans previously taken of the original wheels. And the artists took it further, by inserting LEDs inside them so they light up in the darkness, for an extra cool visual effect.

The work required to make the ice wheels Lexus NX consisted of three months of research, design and testing. And the most creative and risky trick employed to keep it all together for its short drive was to chill the car at -30 degrees Celsius for five whole days prior to its run for glory.

As you might expect, there was a non-negligible chance that the car wouldn’t start after being frozen at such a temperature for 5 days. But, as the company proudly points out, it not only started but did so on the first try and drove as intended.

Of course, such confidence as manifested both in the marketing stunts it pulls (the ice wheels Lexus NX is just the latest) and its tone is polarizing people. Some like their brash courage. Others see it as pointless arrogance.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Last Minute Shopping Tech Gift Ideas for Christmas

December 22, 2015 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Tech Gift Ideas Header

It’s mere days until Christmas day; while you may have been caught up with work and everything, your kids for example surely haven’t. And that Christmas party that you’ve been planning for this year isn’t nearly enough without the much-awaited gifts to wrap everything up with, don’t you think?

Well, it’s alright if you’re late with doing your gift shopping simply because you’ve run out of ideas after all these years of imaginative and insightful presents. For what technology is concerned, I think that more often than not, it will make a great and vast source of ideas and possible gifts for absolutely anyone. After all, we’re slowly moving towards that fabled moment in human evolution when mostly everything will be done by some technological means.

So whether you’re looking for gifts for your kids, your friends and even the elders of your family, tech is what we know and do best, so here’s our list of ideas for this year’s last minute Christmas shopping.

Tech Gift Ideas #1 – Polaroid Zip

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Polaroid Zip

There’s nothing better than managing to take a shot of that perfect moment you’ve experienced with your friends to truly immortalize it, one would think. That’s true, but add a portable photo printer to the ordeal and you’ve got your most special moments out in physical form to share with your dear ones on the spot. The Polaroid Zip Instant Photoprinter is a perfectly mobile and pocket-sized device that you can connect to any smartphone or tablet wirelessly via Bluetooth which will allow you to edit and print 2 x 3 inch format photos, in color.

Amazon has plenty of them for sale, in all of the 4 color variations for $129.99.

Tech Gift Ideas #2 – Tile (Second Generation)

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Tile (Second Generation)

I’m sure I speak for a lot of people when I say I reminisce the amount of times I wished there was a search function in real life and not just on computers. While it’s not exactly the same, the second generation of Tile is an amazingly useful item to have. After you pair it with your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth and attach it to your keys or that one item that you always seem to be misplacing, you’ll be able to trigger an audio notification from your phone whenever the object is question has gone missing. Find your keys in a matter of seconds instead of running late for work again because you’ve spent 15 minutes looking for your keys.

Considering the amount of time you’ll be saving with the tiny Tile, the $24.99 price that’s attached to it on Amazon shouldn’t be a problem.

Tech Gift Ideas #3 – Razor Hovertrax

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Razor Hovertrax

You may have actually seen this one around, either on display in shopping centres or at least on TV. The spiritual successor to the Segway has lost its handlebars and the entire vertical bit of the construction and even made an improvement to its self-balancing system. In some ways, I guess you could say it’s a much slower but also much safer skateboard. Considering it’s automated and can only go up to 6 miles an hour, however, you won’t be taking it to the skateboarding park anytime soon. Surely much appreciated by kids, the Razor Hovertrax is what I would call an early attempt at those hover boards we’ve been seeing in Sci-Fi movies since we were kids ourselves.

A little costly, but surely a great amount of fun, the Razor Hovertrax can be purchased directly from the Razor website for $599.99. As alternatives, you can either try Amazon or your local Walmart.

Tech Gift Ideas #4 – Une Bobine

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Une Bobine

For all the iPhone users out there who have attempted to maintain a FaceTime or Skype call with video for longer amounts of time, you’ve probably run in this situation. You’re low on battery and your hand is tired and there’s literally no way to hold the phone leaning on a vertical surface because of the charger plug at the bottom. For anyone who finds themselves video calling a lot as well as looking for solutions to the aforementioned problem, the Une Bobine is a very minimal and yet futuristic looking cable that you can very well use as a stand for your iPhone. It’s perfectly bendable so you can shape it any way you like and it features a Lightning port on one end and an USB jack on the other. You can use it for video calling, photo shooting setup and even as a nifty nightstand decoration while you’re charging your phone overnight.

It’s available for purchase via Amazon for $34.99.

Tech Gift Ideas #5 – Olloclip 4 in 1

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Olloclip 4 in 1

For all the aspiring smartphone photographers out there who can’t get everything they wished for from their iPhone 6’s camera, the Olloclip 4-in-1 is here to help. In essence, it’s a lens system that clips onto the top of your iPhone that will enhance the image quality for both your front facing and rear facing cameras. It can be adjusted for both the normal and Plus versions and on top of the 10x and 15x magnification, respectively, you also get a wide-angle lens and a fisheye lens.

You can purchase the set from Herman St. for $26.96

Tech Gift Ideas #6 – Tylt Energi Sliding Power Case

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Tylt Energi Sliding Power Case

We all have that one friend that spends most of his waking time with their phone in their hand, even if they’re not doing anything in particular. There’s always websites to browse, scores to check, texts to send, things to see and videos to watch. And because battery tends to drop at worrying rates with all of these lovely and bright displays these days, one needs a backup. Instead of the usual portable battery that will need to be carried around too (those things aren’t exactly small), you can instead opt for the Tylt Energi Sliding Power Case – designed for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Basically you get a portable battery in the shape of a case that serves as a downright sturdy source of protection for your phone. It will add a rechargeable 3,200 mAh battery that stop automatically when your phone reaches 100%.

This great power case can be found on Amazon for $78.70.

Tech Gift Ideas #7 – Grush Gaming Toothbrush

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Grush Gaming Toothbrush

You can never be too careful with your children’s dental health. Because it is in their nature, kids will not only find brushing teeth an absolute drag that they have to do just because they’re told to, but may also not be amazingly thorough with it once they get to it. By employing clever use of gamification principles, the Grush Gaming Toothbrush makes kids actually find a joy in brushing their teeth. Furthermore, thanks to the motion sensor in it, parents will be able to track their kids brushing habits and patterns if you sync it to your phone via the dedicated app.

The toothbrush is currently offered only via the official website at GrushGamer.com for $59.

Tech Gift Ideas #8 – Drones and Other Remote Controlled Vehicles

I had to make this one a category because there are a fair few RC devices out there that you might want to take a look at, given that each one is somewhat special – in one way or another.

  • Blade BLH7600 Nano QX RTF. This tiny quadcopter is most proficient when flying indoors; but despite its size and weight, it’s amazingly sturdy and even comes with spare blades and canopy, should they need replacing. It’s a great toy that features simple controls and a smooth learning curve if you’re new to flying drones. It’s available on Amazon for $79.98.

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Blade BLH7600 Nano QX RTF

  • Axis Aerius. Next up in the list of small sized quadcopters is the Axis Aerius – even smaller than the Blade Nano. It comes in a very compact package with the controller sporting a plastic dome that you can store the Axis Aerius in. The battery will give you roughly 5 minutes of flight time and it allows you to easily spot it thanks to the bright LEDs. Not recommended for outdoor use in most cases still, however. You can get it from the Axis website for $35.

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Axis Aerius

  • Joysway Mad Shark 17” F1. Switching from aerial to aquatic, the Mad Shark is a fun torpedo boat that you can remotely control through a 2.4 GHz two-channel transmitter and receiver. It’s incredibly fast to, being able to reach up to 30 miles per hour thanks to the 2500KV Water Cooled Brushless Outrunner motor. We’ve only found it on Amazon.com so far, for $79.99.

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Joysway Mad Shark 17” F1

  • Air Hogs Star Wars Remote Control Millennium Falcon. We’ve found this great, in-theme drone too that will suffice for any Star Wars fan out there. It has an impressive range of 200 feet and features 2.4 GHz communication. Luckily, this one is a little easier to get your hands on as it’s currently being sold by Walmart for $88.84.

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Air Hogs Star Wars Remote Control Millennium Falcon

  • Parrot MiniDrone Jumping Sumo. And last but not least, let’s not forget about a good old rough terrain explorer such as the Parrot MiniDrone. It can take some crazy turns and even jumps up to 2.5 feet, not to mention that it comes with some predefined controls for a wide range of acrobatics. The greatest part of it all, however, is the fact that it comes with a preinstalled wide-angle camera slapped right on the front of the drone that can stream video to your smartphone while you’re using it. Who needs to attach a separate GoPro when you’ve got this? This amazingly talented and awesomely designed ground drone can be found on Amazon for $109.99.

Tech Gift Ideas #9 – Apple iWatch

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Apple iWatch

If you’ve got the budget to spare, what better gift to get a tech-savvy person than a smartwatch? While there’s nothing we can say to make the iWatch anything more than just a flashy extension of your Apple smartphone, it’s surely the beginning of a soon centric gadget in our day to day lives. If you hurry just the tiniest bit, you might still be able to get your hands on one of the discounted Apple iWatches at Sam’s Club. If not, you can get them straight from apple.com or any retail Apple store for $349.00.

Tech Gift Ideas #10 – Moga Pro Power

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Moga Pro Power

This is one thing that will certainly appeal to your gamer friends will make mobile phone gaming legit by attaching a full scale controller to your smartphone. The Moga Pro Power employs the Xbox 360 controller model and has a S.M.R.T. Lock Arm where you can place your smartphone to turn it into a portable gaming console. You can also attach it to tablets, but that will require a separate slate purchase. Otherwise, this great device will not only make mobile phone gaming easier, but also charge your phone while it’s at it.

You can currently purchase it for a large discount on Amazon, at only $48.99 in comparison to its usual $80.

Tech Gift Ideas #11 – Xbox One Chatpad

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Xbox One Chatpad

While we’re at the gaming section, no matter how fast you’re with your controller typing on your Xbox one console, chatting to someone is a downright hectic ordeal that most won’t even bother with. Give yourself and your gamer friends a break and make use of the Xbox One Chatpad. It connects into the bottom of your controller and contains a full-keyboard (despite rather small scaled). It features backlighting and offers you a rather good degree of headset audio control. It works on Windows 10 too so you can use it in more than one way.

It’s currently available on Amazon for $34.99 or off the official Microsoft website, right here.

Tech Gift Ideas #12 – Console Gift Cards: Xbox One and Playstation 4

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Xbox Gift Cards

It’s difficult to keep track of all the games your friends already own or not if you’re thinking of gifting them something. You don’t want to find yourself in the awkward moment where you realize that you just got your best buddy the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt which he just bought last week on Steam Sales. Instead, and trust me – it will be much appreciated, you can get your gamer friends gift cards for their console of choice. They normally come in 3 amount variants – $10, $20 and $50 – which can suffice for most games, old or new. Alternatively, you can also opt to get them various amounts of subscription for PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live.

Both the gift cards and subscription cards can be found on either Amazon, eBay or via the official console websites at Playstation or at Xbox.

Tech Gift Ideas #13 – Bose QuietComfort 25 Headphones

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Bose QuietComfort 25 Headphones

Headphones are always a good way to go in what gifts are concerned; whether you go for in-ear or over the head headsets, they can be greatly appreciated by anyone who enjoys music a great amount and wants to get a more reliable way of using their smartphone’s music player and still take calls. Our best option for this selection of factors is by far the Bose QuietComfort 25 Headphones – 2015 market leader in what circumaural noise cancelling headphones are concerned. They offer a great amount of immersion and do an amazing job and cancelling outside noise, while still offering you the chance to use them to take calls too.

They are a little more expensive, however, as they go for $269.95 on the bose.com website.

Tech Gift Ideas #14 – iRobot Roomba 880

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas iRobot Roomba 880

Who says household helpers can’t make great gifts too? As society slowly moves towards smart homes and basically automatic everything, you can start by making vacuuming a much less harrowing business. The iRobot Roomba 880 is one of the smartest automatic vacuums we’ve seen because it uses a set of improved scanners that manage to map out rooms and allows it to navigate through them almost perfectly. With several modes that you can set it on, the iRobot will do your vacuuming for you as soon as you turn it on; or alternatively schedule it to do a routine cleaning.

The easiest way to get the iRobot Roomba 880 is via Amazon, where you can find it for $699.

Tech Gift Ideas #15 – iHome iBT29BC Alarm Clock

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas iHome iBT29BC Alarm Clock

Useful and awesome looking, the iHome IBT29BC alarm clock is as much as it is a great addition to your room’s décor. It can change colors through a wide palette so it will go with any kind of wall color. As an alarm clock, it does what any other alarm clock would, including radio. However, I doubt your alarm clocks can also charge your phones via USB or also take it upon themselves to become speakerphones too. No need to struggle to maintain a voice call while you’re trying to get ready for school or work when you can simply take it through your alarm clock.

The iHome Alarm Clock is priced at $69.99 on Amazon.

Tech Gift Ideas #16 – Philips Hue White Starter Kit

Christmas Tech Gift Ideas Philips Hue White Starter Kit

Last but not least in the chapter of home customization and smart homes over all, if you or any of your acquaintances are fidgeting around the idea of remotely controlled homes, here’s a good idea. Because it’s difficult to transition towards a “smart house” if yours wasn’t built to be one by default, it’s easiest to begin with the smallest appliances. Lights, for example. The Philips Hue White Starter Kit consists of two white Hue bulbs, along with their remotely controlled bridge so you can sync them to your smartphone. They include movements sensors too so they can also turn on automatically when you get home for example.

Amazon is the best place to get them from, where they’re listed at a price of $79.99.

Microsoft Surface Book Proves Interesting

December 21, 2015 By Deborah Campbell 2 Comments

The Microsoft Surface Book

Microsoft released the Surface Book on October 26, 2015 in the US, with later release dates for other countries.

In the barely two months since its launch, the Surface Book has gained a lot of traction on the market, by some reports, accounting (along with the Surface Pros) for what appears to be Microsoft’s new-found dominance over Apple in the tablet sales category.

This success is as surprising as it is easy to understand.

Easy because the Microsoft Surface Book, despite initial announcements of being Microsoft’s first laptop, is in fact more than that: a laptop-tablet hybrid (which counts in the above mentioned report)!

Surprising, because not many expected that there was a good potential market for laptop-tablet hybrids out there just waiting to be tapped. Which Microsoft seems to not only have confirmed, but already dominated.

The design and functionality of the Microsoft Surface Book is, admittedly, impressive.

It splits into two parts: a bottom, solid keyboard base which also has the nifty capability of acting as a tablet stand and a top, completely functional and detachable tablet (including a battery).

When connected, they become a proper laptop. In other words, it doesn’t look, feel or function like a tablet with a support that happens to be a keyboard.

This also has to do with the brilliant hinge that allows you to move the screen of the laptop (in this case the tablet itself).

Because most of the important hardware is built-in into the tablet, it is of course heavier than a normal laptop screen. So the hinge was a critical component to take into account to prevent the screen from closing or falling backwards under its weight.

It’s made of multiple strong segments that neatly extend or retract as needed.

However, there’s a downside to this as well: when in a fully closed position, because of these segments, there is a bit of space at the back of the laptop, where the keyboard base and tablet are joined (think the spine, if the laptop where a book).

The tablet itself is a 13.5 inch display one, but with an intriguing, not so frequently used 3:2 ratio. It’s also slim: 8.5 mm.

As regards technical specifications, the Microsoft Surface Book is highly capable. With varying configurations you can choose from, but all of them with sufficient computing power and capabilities.

From the Intel ‘Skylake’ Core i5 CPU, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of SSD storage cheaper entry-level models to the more expensive higher-end Core i7 CPU, 16 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of SSD storage ones. The latter also has a dedicated 1GB Nvidia GPU.

Prices currently range from 1,499 $ to 3,199 $.

Whether the Microsoft Surface Book success was just a fluke or Microsoft is actually on to something remains to be seen, but early signs are very promising. What do you think?

Juniper Networks Spy Code Alert

December 18, 2015 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

Photo of the Juniper Networks headquarters.

Juniper Networks, one of the big US companies that produces networking devices and software, has discovered unauthorized code that can compromise such devices, in an internal review that the company recently had.

They made the announcement that such code was present on Thursday and subsequently proceeded to immediately release critical patches to fix the issue.

They recommended that users download and install these patches so that they are protected from any future attack.

The products with vulnerabilities are only those running certain versions of Juniper Networks’ operating system, called ScreenOS.

The OS system versions in question are 6.2.0r15 – 6.2.0r18 and 6.3.0r12 – 6.3.0r20.

The good news is that Juniper Networks have had no reports that the vulnerable NetScreen devices have actually been exploited.

The bad news is that if they were two be exploited, it could happen in 2 ways. Both of which are very difficult or impossible to detect.

The first scenario consists of a competent hacker getting administrative access to a Juniper device. This access can be gained remotely. And once the hacker has administrative access, he/she can simply delete the log files marking his passage. Therefore, no sign would be left of the attack and the operations performed.

The second scenario involves a likewise competent hacker being able to eliminate the encryption of data sent via the VPN’s using vulnerable Juniper devices. There are no means at the company or user’s disposal to detect whether such a decryption took place.

The disturbing part is that the unauthorized code allows for these two scenarios because it works by compromising the firewall on those Juniper devices running the above mentioned operating system. So, in essence, that barrier which should protect your computer from threats from the “outside” (the whole web) is the actual vulnerability, the entry point.

To add to that, the unauthorized code is designed to spy, not disable or damage your computer or cost you any money, which brings forth strong images of state involvement as opposed to freelance hackers or hacker organizations.

Also worth noting is that the Juniper Networks spy code alert comes just two years after a report by the German Der Spiegel featured an article on NSA’s frequent security breaches of the company’s devices, including the methods used (Feedthrough  – a toolkit that inserts software implants on Netscreen devices that remain active even after reboot or upgrade).

Also around 2013 were Edward Snowden’s allegations that the NSA and other US intelligence agencies intercept and alter technology products on a regular basis.

So why are these reports from 2 years ago relevant for the alert issued yesterday? Simple. Because the earliest version of the Screen OS 6.2.0r15 is dated 2012.

It all fits nicely and is a plausible assumption that this recently discovered breach is in fact state-sponsored.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Star Wars Merchandise to Celebrate the Latest Movie With

December 17, 2015 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Star Wars Merchandise Header

Well, it’s here folks! The much anticipated and oh so long awaited for sequel to the Star Wars movie series has started hitting the cinemas, with the rest of North America following suit. And for all the Star Wars fans out there, this might’ve just scored to be one of the best events of the year for sure. But instead of going ahead and telling you all about the movie and risk spoiling it for the few of you who haven’t yet seen it, we’re going to do something else.

Considering Christmas is less than two weeks away and that having seen or planning to see the new movie soon, the hype is surely hitting an all-time high once again, what better way is there to feed our undying passion for the series than to splurge out pocket money on some of the craziest and fun pieces of Star Wars merchandise we found in stores and online?

Don’t worry, if you haven’t seen the movie yet, we’ll keep everything spoiler free. Here’s a list of the best items we’ve found so far. Mind you, some are a little eccentric and shouldn’t be taken that seriously; they’re just fun – and at times ridiculous – things you can either get as a present for your most dedicated Star Wars fan friends or even get for yourself as a Christmas present.

1. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars Chess Set

Star Wars Merchandise Chess

Let’s start with something light, shall we? We’ve found a fair few types of Star Wars inspired chess boards, figurines included of course. No, sadly, it’s not 3D, but still a marvel to look at and a damn fun thing to make use of. Now, you can either go for a simpler, more plain version of the Star Wars Saga Edition chess set that we’ve found here on eBay for just $29.99. While we’re at it, there is a The Force Awakens version, if you’re willing to whip out another $10 extra.

For the absolutely dedicated, however, we’ve found a more advanced, and downright more expensive Star Wars Chess Game Board. It goes for $350 but it includes faithfully modelled collectible figurines (hence the spiked out price), made after the original Star Wars characters. Who cares about playing with the white or the black pieces when you get to choose whether you play with Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker, Yoda or Darth Maul?

2. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars BB-8 Interactive Talking Figure

Star Wars Merchandise BB-8

The Disney Store graces the devotees of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens with a cute little robot that will roll and bleep its way into your house and your heart as soon as you power it up. It uses a dented wheel underneath its body, making it omnidirectional, and has a surprisingly huge amount of upright stability even if the robot wobbles about a lot when moving. He can also talk and interact with anyone who spares him the attention through simple voice commands. With a vast collection of lights, sound effects and several play modes, he’s a really fun toy for anyone who wants their very own BB-8 rolling about (he can’t be remotely controlled).

The BB-8 Interactive Robot can be found on the Disney Store for $34.95. And if you don’t know who BB-8 is, might as well not look into it until after you’ve seen the Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie.

3. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars Dog Tags

Star Wars Merchandise Dog Tags

Easy to collect and a bunch of great looking trinkets, the Star Wars dog tags feature either the Rebel Alliance, Galactic Empire or Boba Fett. Whether you use them as dog tags are meant to be used, on your key chain or whatnot, they remain a very nicely designed gift or collectible. You can get them for $10.99 a piece on eBay and Amazon.

4. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars Headphones

Star Wars Merchandise Headphones

I have to say, these pairs of headphones may not be the absolute highest quality of sound rendering you can find, but they’re fairly well performing and a sight for sore eyes. With a sturdy and foldable build, a detachable cable that includes an on-wire mic and remote so you can use them with your phone, the SMS Audio Street by 50 Star Wars Edition headphones are outstandingly fashionable. There’s two editions that you can get these in, with slight differences between them. Furthermore, the first edition features either Rebel, Stormtrooper or Boba Fett color pallete and design, while the second edition comes in Rebel, R2-D2 and Darth Vader versions. Ranging between $120 and $150, you can order yourself a pair of those on Amazon but you might want to hurry – they’re low in stock at the moment and the next batch will only be made available on the 24th of December, meaning you might not be able to get them on time if you’re planning to gift them.

5. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars R2-D2 Projecting Clock

Star Wars Merchandise R2-D2 Projecting Clock

“Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you’re my only… way of telling the time!” Yeah, sadly, there won’t be any holographic Leia grinning at you from the R2-D2 figure, but this sure is a fun alternative to a plain old clock in your room. It can project the time and date on any plain surface. It may not be all 3D and holographic and just relies on simple light projections in the form of red lasers.

For this one, however, you’ll have to keep an eye out on Amazon as it’s currently unavailable for purchase and instead redirects you to other providers with slightly inflated prices. Normally, you should be able to get it for about $50 and not the $175+ that I’ve recently been spotting it going for.

6. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars Death Star Ice Molds

Star Wars Merchandise Death Star Ice Molds

Maybe not very appropriate for this time of the year, but at least for future reference you may want to get this lovely tray that makes Death Star shaped ice cubes for your beverages. They’re surprisingly high-detail too, making you feel a little bad when they start melting. However, still a great thing to have in your cupboard for any Star Wars themed party and a nice surprise to anyone who stops to notice the ice cubes in their glasses. You can get the Jollylife Silicone Mold Ice Cube Death Star Tray for as little as $7.49 on Amazon.

7. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars Death Star Planetarium

Star Wars Merchandise Death Star Planetarium

This one is a bit of a 2 in 1, as you might’ve been able to tell by the name alone. It comes in a nice Death Star figure that you can use as a simple decoration with no remorse as it’s nicely designed to start off. However, once you take off the top half cover and reveal what’s underneath, the whole device receives a whole new meaning. The glass layer is inscribed with an entire map of the entire Star Wars Galaxy that will project on your walls thanks to the light inside. There’s also an Earth’s night sky projection dome included in the package which will only project stars all around your room at night. Did I say 2 in 1? Make that 3 in 1.

The Star Wars Science Death Star Planetarium is available on Amazon for $39.99.

8. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars Lightsaber Chopsticks

Star Wars Merchandise Lightsaber Chopsticks

Now I’ll be frank with you, I own two pairs of those, one in red and one in blue. Actually using them for meals – be it from Asian cuisine or not – is really not the ideal experience as they tend to slip a lot. They’re great as a novelty to show off on your shelf or use as hair sticks when you’re sporting a bun. Bet you didn’t think about that, did you?

The chopsticks are a loyal as it can get replica of the light sabers from the series, with the only design exception that they’re a lot more conical for practical purposes. You can get them for $15 a pair; and much to my enthusiasm, there seems to also be a Mace Windu version of purple chopsticks and Yoda’s very own green version.

9. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars Lightsaber Wall Light

Star Wars Merchandise Lightsaber Wall Light

Once again, a great Star Wars novelty that one may find intriguing and pretty cool to say the least is this very appealing lightsaber replica that you will use as a wall light out of all things. While I’m sure you already own an actual lightsaber replica, together with the woosh and everything else, this one you can simply hang and display on your wall. At 25” and 8 different light effects, you can get a suitable hue for your room, at the risk of going all non-canonical (colors included are red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue, purple and… pink. Actual pink, not Mace Windu-like manly purple).

Regardless, it’s available on Amazon for $29.99.

10. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars R2-D2 Pop-up Storage Bin

Star Wars Merchandise R2-D2 Pop-up Storage Bin

Who doesn’t want a new R2-D2 trash bin as a present for Christmas? I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a listing of that once. However, this one is a more respectful storage bin that can fold up and be stored away basically anywhere. Whether you use it for clothing or random objects that you really have no more room for, the R2-D2 Pop-up Storage Bin is a fun alternative for the Star Wars fan.

The only place where we’ve managed to find it available for purchase is BigW however, where it goes for $39.

11. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars Darth Vader Force Glove

Star Wars Merchandise Darth Vader Force Glove

Let’s take it up a notch on the roleplaying ladder and take a look at a toy that not only your kids will enjoy. I’m sure everyone wished that the Force existed at at least one point throughout their lifetimes. Or that one would be able to make metallic objects go crazy like X-Men’s Magneto. You don’t see the connection? Take a look at the Star Wars Darth Vader Force Glove and you will: by combining the magical powers of magnets with a loyal replica of Darth Vader’s most fashionable glove, you get to play pretend at the next level. You’ll have to explain why your outstanding control over the Force only seems to work around magnets and metallic objects, but up until that question arises in your conversation, you can have an unusually large amount of fun just pushing and pulling things around with your Force-tastic glove.

Uncle Milton Store has it for only $19.99.

12. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars Chewbacca slippers

Star Wars Merchandise Chewbacca slippers

I don’t see anyone wearing these for anything else but a downright laugh, but hey – why not? This one is pretty straight forward if I do say so myself; you get the warmest, the furriest and the most comfortable Chewbacca-faced house slippers to wear around your home on those colder and colder days. They only come in large sized but at least on Amazon you can gift wrap them too and have them on their way to their soon-to-be warm and comfortable owner. Currently purchasable for up to $30 a pair.

13. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars Chewie Costume Hoodie

Star Wars Merchandise Chewie Costume Hoodie

Oh my god, they killed Chewie and made a coat out of him! Not really, but the chewie hoodie is a fun thing to wear though I would expect you won’t be taking it with you and wearing it to any galactic conferences anytime soon. Or any conference or other formal events for that matter. However, those cinemas get awfully cold at times and you wouldn’t want to be shivering while you’re trying to get immersed and enjoy the latest Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie, would you?

We’ve found it for sale via the thinkgeek.com store website for just $69.99.

Note: No real Wookiees were harmed in the making of these fake fur hoodies.

14. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars Chewbackpack

Star Wars Merchandise Chewbackpack

While we’re still caught in the apparel category, we’ve got one final item that will allow you to finish your Wookiee clothing collection, even though it comes more as an accessory than anything else: the Chewbackpack. This one won’t just attempt to make your back as hairy as Chewie’s, but instead mounts a smaller scale Wookiee right on there, awaiting a piggy-back ride, with storage space included of course. He even sports a Rebel insignia and a strap that matches Chewie’s bandoleer.

You can purchase it on eBay for $32.99.

15. Star Wars Merchandise – Star Wars Episode VII Star Destroyer BT Speaker

Star Wars Merchandise Star Destroyer BT Speaker

I’ve actually come to appreciate and greatly enjoy products that mix fun with utility. It takes away some of the guilt I feel spending money on things that other people would consider pointless. This Star Destroyer is a great example of items that go well in the list of excusable merch. Keep it turned off and all you’ve got is a Star Destroyer replica that already looks amazing by itself. Turn it on and sync it to your phone via Bluetooth, and suddenly you’ve got your very own Star Destroyer-shaped wireless jukebox speaker to carry with you throughout your house in order to listen to music. With a range of up to 30 feet, its very own charging docking station that looks more like a pedestal than anything else, the Star Destroyer Speaker is available on thinkgeek.com for just $49.99.

Hideo Kojima Talks Going Into Movies, Animations, and New PS4 Exclusive

December 17, 2015 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

Hideo Kojima

Hideo Kojima talks going into movies, animations, and new PS4 exclusive – however, that PS4 exclusive will come the PC medium as well. Kojima Productions isn’t just a video game studio, regardless if the first thing they release will be a game.

Kojima notes that their focus is on digital content – that means anything from movies, animations to video-games and probably even VR experiences. However, the company needs an established IP in games if they want to follow their dream of moving to the big pictures.

Remember that little project with Guillermo del Toro? Well, Kojima says that he still wants to work with the legendary filmmaker, even though del Toro has noted that he may be done with the video game industry entirely.

Kojima has expressed the willingness of going into virtual reality production, one day. He doesn’t know when, but he does believe it has a bright future ahead.

Clearly, Kojima Productions’ first project won’t be a VR one.

And little details are known of the company’s first project. Working alongside Yoji Shinkawa, both key-players in the gaming industry have said that they want to release a complete game – a video-game that has something that people have never seen before, but also something that gamers would expect from them.

Characters need to be more recognizable, more loved by gamers, says Shinkawa, and that’s something that comes from the art side. Visually, it is doable.

Hideo Kojima Talks Going Into Movies, Animations, and New PS4 Exclusive

Kojima hinted that he’s not hindered by Konami’s limitations any more by adding that he – the company; has more agility with projects. They have the freedom to do more edgy titles, while at the same time preserving the quality offered since the release of the first Metal Gear Solid title.

Shinkawa will be overseeing the art direction of Kojima Productions – from background and mechs concepts, to characters and more.

Kojima Productions still hasn’t decided on what game engine they will use. While working for Konami, Kojima and his team developed the Fox Engine – an extraordinary piece of software that is capable of delivering high-quality, photorealistic graphics. But it took several years of development to have it fully functional.

Kojima doesn’t really know what the company will go with – they could very well create an engine from scratch, or choose an existing one.

The PS4 exclusive will be a timed one, as it is already planned to become available to PC gamers after the console release. The statement published by Medium has revealed that Kojima’s game won’t be released on Microsoft’s Xbox one.

Several former team members that Kojima has worked with at Konami have followed him to the new studio.

WhatsApp Court Ordered 48 Hour Service Shutdown

December 17, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Brazilian Flag And WhatsApp Logo

In another example of controversy and law and social media clashing, the 1st Criminal Court of São Bernardo do Campo located in São Paulo, Brazil, decided yesterday to shutdown WhatsApp’s services in all of Brazil.

This ban will last for 48 hours and has already affected the market standing of Whatsapp against its biggest competitor there, Telegram.

In the first three hours since the shutdown went into effect, 500,000 new Brazilian users signed up for Telegram. After four hours of shutdown in total, the number had swelled to 1,000,000. And soon after jumped to 1,500,000.

Telegram was very pleased by the upheaval and determined to make the best of it.

Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook (which owns WhatsApp) and WhatsApp founder Jan Koum were not so pleased. The latter posted the following on Facebook, and Zuckerberg liked the post:

We are disappointed in the short-sighted decision to cut off access to WhatsApp, a communication tool that so many Brazilians have come to depend on, and sad to see Brazil isolate itself from the rest of the world.

However, the WhatsApp court ordered 48 hour service shutdown isn’t something that came out of the blue. A judicial court order was issued on the 23rd of July, that WhatsApp did not comply with. They received another notification of the order on the 7th of August, when they had still not complied, and were also issued a fine.

Then, yesterday, Judge Sandra Regina Nostre Marques took note that WhatsApp is still not complying so, within the boundaries of the powers she wields under Brazilian law and according to its Internet legislation, ordered the shutdown.

All of the Brazilian phone companies were instructed to block WhatsApp’s texting and Voice Over IP (VOIP) services.

SindiTelebrasil is one of these and has obeyed the order with stringency and zeal.

It comes as no surprise, considering that Brazilian phone companies have kept trying to control companies like WhatsApp and Telegram.

They claim VOIP services are similar to those offered by them and are in fact competition that undermines them.

As such, Brazilian phone companies claim that companies like WhatsApp should be considered telecommunications companies and subjected to Brazilian law, just like SindiTelebrasil and others are.

The staggering fact is that a report shows 93% of the 110,000,000 people using the internet in Brazil used WhatsApp prior to the shutdown.

That’s why there is an economic battle on top of the legal battle, with competitors like Telegram and the Brazilian phone companies respectively, trying to get in on WhatsApp’s action.

Still, the legal battle remains at the core. The Brazilian Network Band News TV claims that the court’s insistence towards the shutdown stems from an investigation focusing on a drug trafficker linked to one of the biggest and most dangerous criminal gangs in São Paulo who used WhatsApp in his dealings.

Top 7 Best Entry Level DSLR Cameras – A Guide to Begin With

December 16, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Best Entry Level DSLR Cameras

If you’re planning to shelf your smartphone and its camera after finally deciding there’s only so much you can do with it and pick up photography and take your skills to the next level, then it’s probably the proper time to start considering purchasing your first DSLR.

If you take into account the fact that the transition between amateur means of taking photos and actual cameras that don’t just advertise themselves through the number of pixels is a pretty confusing and overwhelming process, you shouldn’t just jump in and straight out purchase a professional camera right away. Not only that the learning curve is rather steep, but most professional cameras will most likely shake you of a great portion of your savings too.

Entry level DSLRs may lack some of the advanced features that you only get with professional gear but they will serve you as a gateway device a fair amount of time. However, choosing one that is right for you isn’t very straightforward: no matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to find that one camera that can serve you perfectly in every single aspect or type of photography one can do. Instead, there is a number of factors and types of builds you can use and should consider before making the big purchase.

We’ve taken the liberty of making a small summary of what you should be looking out for when looking to buy a DSLR – be it entry level or professional.

  • Brand

A critically acknowledged factor that we tend to guide most if not all of our purchases on, it applies to DSLRs too. In the trade of photography, there are two major brands that basically lead the market; as you probably already know, the ones in question are Nikon and Canon. And there’s no doubt about it – they are the most popular for a reason, whether we’re talking about seniority in the market, the quality of their products or even things that go as far as innovation.

Best Entry Level DSLR Lead Brands

While the first natural intention would be to lean towards one of the Nikon or Canon DSLRs, it doesn’t mean that you should completely disregard cameras that come from lesser competitors. There is a number of manufacturers that manage to pull off fairly impressive devices which might get overlooked simply because they lack a popular tag to go along with. Some companies that make great cameras which you should take a fair look at are also names such as Pentax or Sony.

  • Price

In terms of price, if you’re just starting up in the ways of photography, you have a few choices. Most new entry-level DSLRs won’t come cheap and take you as far as $1,000 in the worst case scenario, while staying in the $500 range in the best case scenario. If you find yourself on a budget and you want to stick to cheap DSLR cameras, however, you can either opt for a slightly older model – say, a year or a little older than that in order to not miss on the greatly important, newer features that the best entry level DSLR cameras come with – or choose whether you go for a kit lens or body-only purchase.

Buying only the body will be cheaper, at least to begin with. But you still require a lens purchase afterwards which won’t be particularly cheap but which – on the upside – you can choose according to what kind of photography you’re interested in. There won’t be a considerable difference in price unless you go for a less impressive set of lens and honestly, most of the time it’s better if you stick to the default kit lens that you get with the DSLR when you purchase it. It will most probably cover a fair amount of zoom range and is a more generic tool to start yourself off with while still being able to experiment. You should, however, take into consideration the fact that you shouldn’t expect the greatest of image qualities to come out of a basic kit lens, as they’re usually not that great when it comes to taking photos in more difficult conditions.

  • Sensor

The sensor is more often than not responsible of how the photos you want to take are captured: starting with resolution and going as far as the way it handles the scene you want to take a photo of in terms of lighting. The larger the sensor, the better, at least in most cases. Because the sensor in your camera is responsible for capturing light and using it to create the image itself, one could argue that it is the most important part of the camera altogether.

Best Entry Level DSLR Cleaning Sensor

Sensors come in many types but the most popular you’ll find in entry-level DSLRs are the APS-C sensors – with a crop factor of 1.5x to 1.7x and an usual size of 23.6 x 15.6 mm they remain relevant in terms of ultimate picture quality without sacrificing too much on the space they take. In the end, there are a lot of aspects of the sensor that you should be taking into consideration when browsing for what is to become the best entry level DSLR for you.

  • Shutter speed

This particular factor should never end up overlooked. Much of your photos’ clarity is granted thanks to the shutter speed in close collaboration with the auto-focus feature. Faster shutters are proficient at letting the camera capture photos much faster, together with the burst speed value and the number of AF sensors. If you’re studying your potential DSLR market, you should consider looking for cameras that have burst speeds of 5 frames per second and 1/4000 or above maximum shutter speed.

  • Autofocus sensors

Making use of the two types of autofocus sensors provides a much higher accuracy in focusing your subjects when you’re taking shots. The two types I’m referring to are vertical sensors and cross-type sensors. The difference between the two are the fact that the former only detect and focus on contrast along a vertical line while the latter are two dimensional contrast focus points. Basically, the more the merrier; they grant your camera to be able to detect and focus on each subject in the picture separately, bringing out the different interest points in it.

  • Megapixel value

As you might have been able to tell by my comment related to it in the intro, megapixels are a touchy subject. While this particular aspect is just as important as any other, there is a bad trend that has been adopted by most smartphone manufacturers who advertise their products’ cameras based on the megapixel count alone. In reality, this number only accounts for the maximum resolution that your camera is capable of; and just because the camera can shoot photos in huge resolutions doesn’t also mean the pictures are great.

The list could sincerely go on, counting in every single feature that you may find on some of the best cameras for beginners out there and how they could become something important for you to guide your purchase and beyond. Depending on the type of photography you‘re planning to try out, some things may turn out to be better than others for you and you alone. Knowing every single little thing your future camera can do, however, is never a bad thing.

Now that we’ve taken a short trip down all the aspects that you should be looking at when picking a camera, we’ve compiled a list of the best entry level DSLR cameras that we could find on the market based on an average of stats and features. Do remember that it falls down to you to decide which is the best. But here are some good options nevertheless.

Best Entry Level DSLR Choice #1 – Nikon D3300

Best Entry Level DSLR Choice #1 – Nikon D3300

One of the first choices that came to mind – and for good reason – is the Nikon D3300, actually known as one of the superior entry level DSLR out there. The reason behind that is the very good image quality that it can render, thanks to the fast shutter speed, an antialiasing filter, 1080p at 60 frames per second shooting and even a Guide Mode for beginners. In all sense, the Nikon D3300 is a particularly solid choice when it comes to a DSLR camera for beginners and by extrapolating, probably the best entry level Nikon DSLR.

The Nikon D3300 comes at a price of $399.99, making it very cheap compared to what one would expect.

Best Entry Level DSLR Choice #2 – Canon EOS 750D Rebel T6i

Best Entry Level DSLR Choice #2 – Canon EOS 750D Rebel T6i

The Canon EOS 750D Rebel T6i is one of the cameras that has adopted a 3 inch 1,040k dot vari-angle touchscreen to make your life easier when having to shoot from different angles without a tripod. While that by itself is a great thing to have, especially in a DSLR for beginners, that’s not what makes this particular model great. Instead, it adopts a 19-point all cross-type autofocus system, making it an amazingly accurate and fast photo capture device. It sticks to the average 5 frames per second shooting rate, but all things considered, this is probably one of the best entry level Canon DSLR.

You can purchase the Canon EOS 750D Rebel T6i for $950, making it one of the more expensive options.

Best Entry Level DSLR Choice #3 – Canon EOS 700D Rebel T5i

Best Entry Level DSLR Choice #3 – Canon EOS 700D Rebel T5i

The immediate predecessor of the Rebel T6i, the Canon EOS 700D Rebel T5i is a slightly more affordable variant of the above, still featuring an articulated screen. In retrospect however, looking at the 700D, you’ll notice that it only has a 9 point autofocus system and also lacks the Wi-Fi capabilities of its successor. However, given that this particular beginner DSLR is not one of the newest cameras (it was released in 2012), it remains a more or less risky choice. It may lack some of the newer features that you get with the latest DSLRs but it’s still a reliable tool for anyone just starting off in photography.

This particular model is priced at $899.99.

Best Entry Level DSLR Choice #4 – Nikon D5500

Best Entry Level DSLR Choice #4 – Nikon D5500

Not an immense improvement over its predecessor, but the Nikon D5500 has a few things that may catch your attention – starting with an articulated touchscreen. It has no less than an autofocus system consisting of 39 points, out of which 9 are cross type. It can capture up to 5 frames per second and can shoot video in 1080p at 60 frames per second for a maximum duration of 20 minutes.

Sadly, it falls into the rather expensive category. Being a rather recent release, having been released in February this year, its price hasn’t gone down from $850.

Best Entry Level DSLR Choice #5 – Nikon D5300

Best Entry Level DSLR Choice #5 – Nikon D5300

Having come out more than a year prior to the Nikon D5500, the D5300 doesn’t have as much to show for itself, but can easily count itself as a great all-purpose DSLR for beginners. To count some things you’d be missing on by picking the D5300 over the D5500, that would probably be very little to mention to be frank. It has the same 9 out of 39 cross type sensor autofocus system, the same 5 frames per second burst shooting, same video shooting quality. However, the camera is slightly different from a visual perspective and the Nikon D5300 hasn’t been gifted with a touchscreen even though it can still swivel and flex for easy shooting.

As one would expect, the Nikon D5300 is slightly cheaper than the D5500, listed at $750.

Best Entry Level DSLR Choice #6 – Pentax K-50

Best Entry Level DSLR Choice #6 – Pentax K-50

The Pentax entry level series features one of the iconic aspects of all of their cameras and that is a weather-sealed build. While this may not account for much in terms of actual camera performance, it does however account for a highly reliable and sturdy camera for you to start off on. It doesn’t come very close in terms of performance when you bring its direct competitors in the picture (Canon and Nikon that is). It only features a 11 point autofocus system with 9 out of 11 cross-type sensors. Surprisingly, it goes up to 6 frames per second in continuous shooting, exceeding the performance of the previously listed DSLRs.

The listed price for the Pentax K-50 is $779.97.

Best Entry Level DSLR Choice #7 – Sony Alpha a58

Best Entry Level DSLR Choice #7 – Sony Alpha a58

Last but not least, I felt like the Sony Alpha a58 deserved a mention. If not for its performance, at least for the outstanding price to quality ratio, which is pretty good to say the least. It features an electronic viewfinder and outstanding autofocusing speed when you’re looking at the scene in live view. Surprisingly to say the least, while the Sony Alpha a58 isn’t closely as good as the previous mentions, it does manage to pull of 8 frames per second in continuous shooting speed.

The Sony Alpha a 58 is ne of the cheapest camera in the best entry level DSLR list – you can get it for $499 from the manufacturer and probably even less from other 3rd party retailers.

Facebook, Google, Twitter Hate Speech Agreement

December 16, 2015 By Michael Turner Leave a Comment

Facebook, Twitter and Google logos.

The new Facebook, Google, Twitter hate speech agreement reached today is the conclusion of the German government’s efforts of the past months to eliminate hate speech from social media platforms in the country.

In accord with the agreement, these three companies will delete any hate speech present in discussions under their control within 24 hours.

Which, as you can imagine, raises the much dreaded specter of censorship. Or at least censorship should be a much dreaded specter in a democratic state.

However, the issue is a tad more complicated, as human affairs often are.

Because the German government’s efforts to curb and hopefully eliminate hate speech completely come amid the growing tensions caused by the refugee crisis.

The fact that this government has to deal with more than 1 million refugees received this year alone, for which it is directly responsible, makes it understandable that they have to take practical, effective measures like the hate speech agreement, and not just put out declarations and urge the population to play nice.

Also worth taking into consideration is that hate speech is illegal by German law, meaning hatred promoted against any segments of the population. So asking foreign companies to forbid users on German territory to use it is not that much of a stretch.

Still, the problem of censorship remains. Where does freedom of speech end?

According to Heiko Maas, the German Justice Minister:

When the limits of free speech are trespassed, when it is about criminal expressions, sedition, incitement to carry out criminal offenses that threaten people, such content has to be deleted from the net. And we agree that as a rule this should be possible within 24 hours.

Germany has asked Facebook to help it better manage the refugee crisis by fighting online racism on its platform since September this year and they initially refused.

That prompted the German government to put on more pressure and in the past few months it started investigating four Facebook executives, including Martin Ott, the managing director for all of Central, Northern and Eastern Europe, claiming they had not done enough to control hate speech and are directly responsible for Facebook’s failure in this direction.

Facebook responded at the time by saying that Martin Ott and all of its employees in Germany have done nothing wrong, performed their duties flawlessly and the accusations lack merit.

Now, it seems Facebook, along with Google and Twitter, have finally decided to agree to the German government’s request. Whether because they see eye-to-eye or because they finally caved to the pressure is hard to determine.

But starting today, users of these social media platforms will be able to report hate speech so that it gets deleted within 24 hours. Specialist teams have been set up to deal with such reports.

Whether for good or for ill, this is happening. What are your thoughts?

LG Optimus L70 Review – The Pretty-Looking Fund Saver

December 15, 2015 By Michael Turner Leave a Comment

LG Optimus L70 Header

No matter how appealing they make them look and how many discounts and offers you find on the market, the cold hard fact is that the holidays are nearly upon us and there’s not much more we can afford. While we were looking for an affordable option for this year’s possible smartphone gifts, we came across the LG OPTIMUS L70 that downright shocked us with its abysmally low price.

Getting it without a contract will probably cost you less than getting a much newer smartphone on a whole two-year commitment contract. Sure, it probably isn’t any jaw-dropping embodiment of state of the art technology or mind-boggling performance, but it’s still a touchscreen phone that will get the job done. The fact that it can connect to 4G networks in a huge plus too.

There’s only so much you can expect from a phone of this caliber. But the things that it manages to do, it does well. Considering the very low price class that it falls into, it can make for a great last minute gift for your kids or other family members, especially if they prefer pre-paid cards over long-term commitments.

Pros:

  • Android KitKat OS
  • 4G capability
  • Nice design
  • One of the most affordable android phones

Cons:

  • Lacks a number of more or less needed features
  • Small and rather dark display
  • Low storage space
  • Mid-tier hardware components

LG Optimus L70 Design

LG Optimus L70 Black

The first time I saw an LG OPTIMUS L70 on the shelf I actually thought to myself that it’s not a bad looking phone. And it really isn’t: it may not innovate anything in terms of design and doesn’t even come close to the gigantic phones of our brimming with technology days, but there’s really not much to complain about when it comes to the looks of this small smartphone. It may not reach the overall size of the current trends, but still exceeds the iPhone 5’s size. For its 127.2 x 66.8 x 9.5 mm dimensions, it manages to pack a 4.5 inch display and sums up a 67.8% screen to body ratio. That’s not too much to speak of and mostly caused by the relatively large bezel, especially at the top and bottom.

However, the LG Optimus L70 has an aspect ratio that you’re most surely not used to; while it’s not that exact ratio, it’s mostly similar to 16:10 layouts, making it look and feel wider than your usual smartphone. Surprisingly, even considering the 9.5 mm it scores in thickness, it’s not difficult to hold at all and even feels comfortable doing so. With the only downside that typing texts on it for example will probably make it more than difficult for you, especially if your hands are more on the large side. It doesn’t come in much heavier than your average Joe phone, weighing only 124 grams; if anything you’ll find it even lighter than most of nowadays’ smartphones – but that’s mostly because of its smaller scale.

I mentioned earlier that the LG Optimus L70 doesn’t innovate much in terms of design. That is mostly because looking at the LG Optimus L70 makes me think of some older Samsung phones, before gigantic displays became the current fad. The way its front face looks, featuring touch-sensitive Back and Options buttons, with your clickable Home button slapped in the middle is reminiscent of Samsung Galaxy S2 or Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini. But it actually ends up looking sleeker and more delicate than that, thanks to the larger display and sharp but slightly curved and softer corners. You’ll even notice the front facing camera along with its own LED flash on the top right corner, making it look anything but outdated.

LG Optimus L70 White Edges

The edges of the phone, even if a lot thicker than what we’ve grown accustomed to with all these new smartphones aspiring to be paper-thin soon, are well rounded to increase grip on it and feature most function buttons. They’re set all around the metallic frame going all around the phone: the right side features a single sleep or power button, while the left hosts the volume rocker and a Quick Launch button – something that will come in very handy and that you won’t find on many other smartphones, especially budget models.

The top is where you’ll find the regular 3.5 mm headphones jack – a more suitable location considering that the phone is relatively small and pocketing it is actually an achievable feat; I’ve yet to own the pair of jeans that will fit anything of the likes of iPhone 6S Plus in their pocket. The bottom of the LG Optimus L70 is where you’ll find the microUSB charging port. The phone was released in the first quarter of 2014; it’s an overstretch to hope for anything such as Type-C USB charging for it.

LG Optimus L70 Bottom

The back of the LG Optimus L70 is a bit of a marvel, at least for the black version that we’ve used for this review. While the only other LG Optimus L70 white variant features a plain and matte back cover, the black one features a hexagonal mosaic pattern on its back in different shades of gray. That gives off a very fun grainy look to the back that’s a lot more appealing than your regular classic black. On the back rests the rear camera sensor, much larger than its front equivalent with its very own LED flash as well as the LG and metroPCS logos. Still, if that is not to your liking, LG put at your disposal the possibility of purchasing an LG Optimus L70 case.

LG Optimus L70 Matte White

LG Optimus L70 Light Cases

One of the catches of the LG Optimus L70 is the back cover. Unlike most of the smartphones these days, you actually get to remove the back cover and thus gain access to the battery compartment and more. The reason I say more is because under the battery you’ll find two very important slots: both the Mini SIM and the microSD slots.

Sadly, there seems to be a downside to most good things in this world: you can an easily accessible and just as easily replaceable battery, but that means that every time you want to swap out your microSD card, you’ll have to turn the phone off and take out its battery in order to do it. Plus, you’d have to go through the entire process of taking the cover off as well if you opt for any of the LG Optimus L70 cases.

LG Optimus L70 Extra Protection Cases

So to sum it up, design wise the LG Optimus L70 is quite nice to look at even if it doesn’t come up to par with what you see in the flashiest, bright lit shelves these days.

LG Optimus L70 Display

I will start off this section by straight out saying that the LG Optimus L70 display may come as a bit of a disappointment to some as it’s far from bright and highly detailed. At 4.5 inches, the display isn’t as large as one might be used to, but you won’t – at any point – struggle to read or view content on it. It makes up through width if anything, sporting a more unusual aspect ratio.

LG Optimus L70 Screen

The display is of the WVGA variety – abbreviation for Wide Video Graphics Array – and only sums up to a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. That accounts for a 207 ppi pixel density value – far from one of the best you can find on a wide variety of hand-held devices. Because of that, watching movies or running graphic-intensive apps on the LG Optimus L70 is not the best experience you will get. The image tends to get a little pixelated at times and you may even find yourself noticing a fair amount of grain and light distortion towards the edges. I’m fairly unsure why that even occurs in the first place but it’s something to take into account.

The display is an IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen build, a fact that probably explains the relative brightness issues. Being the less expensive option for manufacturers, the IPC technology is also at fault for thicker devices. In essence, that means that you lose a fair amount of brightness and contrast potential at the cost of more natural looking colors. I’m going to stick to saying that viewing angles are decent but once again, not the best. The same goes for viewing what your screen has to display when in sunlight.

LG Optimus L70 Specs & Hardware

If there’s any way for me to sum up what kind of hardware you’d be getting in the LG Optimus L70, I’d have to stick to calling it mid-range technology. None of the components will wow you but they still are a relatively decent pick for the phone’s price range. The only downright frustrating issue with it is the storage space, but we’ll elaborate on that later on in the review.

The LG Optimus L70 packs a Qualcomm MSM8210 Snapdragon 200 chipset – making it a very old processor (it was released in in either 2010 or 2011 if memory serves well) that won’t be running any digital marathons soon. Thanks to the dual core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 core processing unit, you will be able to run most basic needs apps and it will serve you well when it comes to anything regarding emailing, net surfing and other less demanding applications. Put it to a multitasking stress test however, and the performance will become sluggish to say the least.

With the chipset comes the Adreno 302 graphics processing unit. This GPU will work just fine with basic games such as the likes of Angry Birds, but more demanding games from 2013 and onwards will not share the same fate. Together with the modest 1 GB of RAM, you should probably stick to basic multimedia and not get your hopes up for anything that is more demanding than that.

Now comes the part which I’ve mentioned in the intro and that is the storage space. The base amount you get is a rather shocking 4 GB hard drive only. Considering the operating system alone will clog up a portion of this, you’ll be left with little to none for your own necessity. On the bright side however, you do get the separate microSD storage which – albeit forcing you to open up the phone every time you need to swap out cards – can lend you a helping hand of up to 32 extra GB of storage space.

LG Optimus L70 Software

Straight from the factory, the LG Optimus L70 will come with preinstalled the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system. It’s not your regular stock Android version and instead runs the LG Optimus 3.0 user interface with its own twists and perks. You still get the regular Google apps without having to resort to applied skins and other third party applications. Your Chrome, Gmail, Google Plus, Hangouts and so on are the same as on any other Android device.

The Optimus user interface brings its own input to the party, giving you apps such as QuickMemo – a nifty little thing that will allow you to doodle and make notes directly on the images you can see on the screen. Another example is the QSlide 2.0 that reminds me of how YouTube works on mobile devices when you minimize the video you’re currently watching so you can continue browsing without having to close it off completely beforehand. The QSlide allows you to minimize some apps while you use something else or accessing your menus.

LG Optimus L70 OS

The Metro411 app that you’ll find is the touch that MetroPCS brought to the LG Optimus L70 and consists of a handy hub of nearby restaurants and businesses, inbuilt in your system so you don’t have to rely on websites or other third party apps that will eat at your already scarce storage space.

Sadly, there’s no upgrade to any of the newer Android models on the horizon, not even to the 5.0 Lollipop, so users will most likely not get to experiment the newer Android to its full potential.

LG Optimus L70 Camera

The 5 megapixel rear facing camera will do a great job as long as you don’t try to expand the photos you take to resolutions higher than its native 800 x 480 pixels. While the maximum resolution you can get is 2560 x 1920, with a default 2240 x 1344, the photos start looking a little grainy and they lose detail the more you enlarge it when viewing it on your computer.

This camera doesn’t employ the fastest shutter out there, forcing you to stand still a moment before the photo is actually taken. But otherwise, the photo quality ends up relatively good, clear and decently focused, even when in close range.

There’s a fun feature you’ll find in-built in the LG Optimus L70 phone. That is the voice-activated shutter that will know to take a photo when it hears queue words such as “cheese”. The software gives you a fair amount of settings and post-editing you can do such as 4 scene mode, Panorama, continuous shooting and much more.

The front facing camera is even less fascinating than the at least decent rear one. It does, however, give you the option of saving the photos you take in either landscape or portrait orientation but can only take photos in an even smaller resolution: 640 x 480.

Video recording is an option using both of the aforementioned cameras but don’t expect the next Hollywood movie to be shot with the LG Optimus L70. The quality of the videos shot with it will be underwhelming to say the least, ranging from resolutions that don’t exceed 800 x 480 for the rear camera and 640 x 480 on the front facing camera. At least that makes video conferencing possible, to a degree.

LG Optimus L70 Battery

LG Optimus L70 SIM & microSD

The phone promises between 11 and 12 hours of talk time thanks to its 2,040 mAh removable battery. It’s a decent power pack that will keep the phone going for a fair while, especially given the rather low maintenance display. Even watching videos will keep your battery away from the charger for several hours at a time. Form that perspective, the LG Optimus L70 is a great and reliable thing to have and not find yourself in the position where you always have to carry the charger around with you.

Charging it isn’t the lengthiest of processes either as you’ll probably not need more than 2-3 hours at most to get a full charge going.

LG Optimus L70 Verdict

So, to wrap it all up, by purchasing the LG Optimus L70 you’ll be granted with a great and reliable method of handling your daily businesses in terms of calling, emailing and most of the more basic apps. It’s a great phone that doesn’t overdo display size but in retrospect, you miss out on many features that more recent phones come with.

With a particularly power-hungry build and full access to Android-centric applications and feature, the LG Optimus L70 is worth taking a closer look at if you’re searching for a budget smartphone.

You can purchase the LG Optimus L70 from various online and retail stores. It’s listed at prices between $50 and $75 on most of the above, without a contract.
