Android Auto and Apple CarPlay Now Available in Ford’s 2017 Cars

July 25, 2016 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

Ford Apple CarPlay

It’s a tight race between Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as both try to dominate the market of infotainment systems.

At CES 2016 which was held in January, the automaker Ford announced that both these services will be available on all of its 2017 models, provided they are equipped with a Sync 3 infotainment system.

While that was good news for owners, now Ford has a new announcement to make: the availability of Sync 3 will also be expanded to all of the company’s 2017 models, which means Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will, as well.

Many of the 2017 models – such as the Mustang, Explorer, Escape, and Fusion – were already compatible with the system, but the American automaker is no expanding the list to include every car (and light truck) in the production line. Later this year, the Super Duty heavy-duty truck will also be fitted with Sync 3 on its launch.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatible with Ford’s Sync 3

The unpopular Sync with MyFord Touch system was replaced in 2016 by Sync 3, whose debut involved various improvements. The new service with its streamlined menus and more responsive touchscreen finally elevated Ford in the business of infotainment systems.

Ford Sync 3 System

Also rolling out the compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will help Sync 3 become a more worthy rival for other carmakers’ systems, many of which already offer even better features.

Both Apple and Android services enable users to access their smartphones by using the built-in controls of their vehicles. The car’s infotainment system is covered by a layer of Apple or Android-specific features, such as similar interfaces, Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Siri voice control for Apple users.

If you want to pair your smartphone with the car’s dashboard, you have to download the corresponding app. Ford reported saying that everything regarding its infotainment system will be carefully maintained and constantly updated with over-the-air software updates.

But if you’re not a fan of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, Ford’s own app suite, called Sync AppLink, is still on the table. Apps for music streaming like Pandora, Spotify, and weather forecast like AccuWeather are already compatible with AppLink, but Ford hopes to attract even more developers.

Evan Blass Tweets Release Date of Apple’s iPhone 7

July 24, 2016 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

Apple's iPhone 7

The day is nearly upon us, folks. According to a reputable source, the much-awaited iPhone 7 will apparently hit the shelves no later than Friday, September 16th.

Apple itself has yet to confirm or deny this rumor, but according to a tweet sent out by leaker Evan Blass, the next flagship handset will soon be released. The not-yet-official release date was originally not as precise, as Blass first posted that was going to release the new iPhone during the week of September 12.

Soon after his first tweet, people started replying about the confusion as to whether or not that date referred to the iPhone 7’s unveiling or the launch event. A follow-up tweet published on Saturday, July 23, quickly cleared things up.

Keeping in mind Blass’ unblemished track record regarding Apple rumors and the company’s history in releasing iPhones, it’s a safe bet that crowds have already planned to line up outside of Apple retail stores around the country on September 16.

Just to give some context for the rumor, some of the readers remember that the iPhone 6s was released by Apple on September 25 and iPhone 6 on September 9. Everything fits in place.

Apple's iPhone 7 rumored specs

If that release date is true, it’s also easy to deduce the unveiling of the iPhone 7 will most likely be scheduled about 10-14 days prior to that. A quick glare at the calendar tells us that Tim Cook and co. might actually hit the stage on September 6 or 7, introducing the new smartphone to the world.

Meanwhile, how much do we know about the features included in the next-gen iPhone? According to pretty much every rumor out there, Apple is most likely saving the jaw-dropping features for the iPhone 7s (which may or may not be released as iPhone 8).

At the same time, the iPhone 7 is not to be overlooked, because a lot of interesting things could be rolling with it. In large part, those might be related to a huge advance forward in terms of camera technology.

But whether or not a dual camera system will be included, or whether iPhone 7 will be significantly larger, the truth is these are all rumors still. If Blass is to be believed, we might soon be sure, as we hold Apple’s new baby in our hands.

New Algorithm Reduces App Update Size in Google Play Store

July 24, 2016 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Google Play Store

A new algorithm has been added to the Google Play Store and it bears good news for users who are constantly fighting with the storage limitation.

According to an Android Developers blog post, the algorithm can reduce the size of the updates released for Android apps, while also displaying to users the actual size of the updates they install.

Google also revealed that over the last year, more than 65 billion apps were downloaded from the Google Play Store. Given the rapid growth that’s visible on the app front, developers are being forced to release more frequent updates so they can keep up with the new content.

At the same time, many updates include fixes of security issues and changes required by the users’ feedback. It didn’t take long, however, for Google to realize there was a problem regarding certain users who rarely connect to Wi-Fi networks.

Updates are straining in terms of data they require to download and install. That’s why the search giant looked for ways to reduce the size of app updates, while also showing to users how much data they require to download.

Google announced that, now, only the changes brought to the apps in the Google Play Store will be downloaded (changes known as deltas). Then, they are merged with the apps that are already installed on smartphones, significantly reducing the size of the updates.

In the blog post, the company illustrated the power of the new delta algorithm with the help of two recent fixes to the Google Chrome browser for Android.

Originally, the major update from M46 to M47 had a size of 22.8 MB, while the M47 minor update was 15.3 MB. After the new algorithm was applied, the updates’ sizes were reduced to an impressive 12.9 MB and 3.6 MB, respectively.

While these updates can be reduced in size almost by 50 percent, Google also hopes to reduce the data strain of the expansion files required by some apps, such as mobile games. These additional downloads to a main app are much larger, but they will soon be reduced by 12 percent, on average.

With the news of the algorithm also comes the update that will display the amount of data necessary to download apps and updates in the Google Play Store. This will help users with limited data plans to be aware of how much they’re consuming.

Dreambit Allows You To Try New Hairstyles Digitally

July 23, 2016 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Dreambit software

Ask any girl: choosing a new hairstyle can be one of the most difficult tasks on this planet.

And while that might be an overstatement – we know that – it has a lot to do with the fact that we never know exactly how a new hairstyle would fit our faces or complement our appearance.

However, this problem has finally found a solution in the form of a piece of software created by researchers at the University of Washington. Meet Dreambit, the software that allows you to better imagine how you will look with a completely new hairstyle.

You don’t have to try that new bob or shave your head for real to see if a new hairdo will suit you – at least, not anymore. The software can even “turn back time” and allow you to see if a particular color or hairstyle would have looked good on you when you were 12 years old.

Dreambit is useful and entertaining at the same time

Using the software is really easy; all you need to do is upload a photo of you and then type a search term for what you would be interested (e.g. “black curly hair” or “1960s”). After looking through internet photo collections and different categories, the software will seamlessly give you the new look.

To offer an end result that fits your face as much as possible, the new software searches through hundreds of thousands of photographs that people have uploaded on the internet. Then, it copies and pastes only the elements of the appearance that look similar yours.

At the same time, its creators say the software’s abilities are fine tuned to change a person’s look while also keeping the original face shape intact, as well as their pose and expression.

“This is a way to try on different looks or personas without actually changing your physical appearance,” explains Ira Kemelmacher-Shlizerman, one of the developers. “While imagining what you’d look like with a new hairstyle is mind blowing, it also lets you experiment with creative imaginative scenarios.”

Many elements were involved in creating the new software, including facial recognition and processing, age progression, and three-dimensional reconstruction.

Thanks to the age progression software built by Kemelmacher-Shlizerman herself, the software can come up with different photographs representing a specific country, period, and age.

There Is Still Hope for Pokémon Go on Widows Phone

July 21, 2016 By Roxanne Briean 1 Comment

Pokémon Go on Windows Phone

It seems that there is still hope for those who wish to play Pokémon Go on Windows Phone. Microsoft, the mother company, promised to look into the problem and make the dream of all fans of the augmented reality come true.

Currently, the mobile app is only compatible with iOS and Android, and it is not the only unavailable service on Windows Phone. Snapchat, another highly popular social media app is not supported by the Windows OS, angering the fans that cannot keep up with their friends with Android and iOS devices.

At first, there were only rumors that traveled through semi-official channels. Now, Microsoft Portugal emitted a statement declaring that the company “will look into options” to bring Pokémon Go on Windows Phone.

Unfortunately, even though the account is a verified, official one, the statement cannot be 100 percent trusted due to the fact that the people that usually handle the social media part are not in the loop when it comes to new developments.

The Windows Phone OS is renouncing to offer support for a lot of commonly used apps. Recently, representatives of the company announced that Windows Phone would no longer support Skype or WhatsApp.

Microsoft seems more interested in the fact that there are still eight days of free Windows 10 upgrades left, and they haven’t reached their established target. Moreover, the Anniversary Update for Windows 10 will be released on August 2nd, fixing all of the bugs that current users complained about.

It may be that the dream of playing Pokémon Go on Windows Phone is in the hands of Nintendo. Fans believe that the company would be able to bring the game on the Windows platform, but Nintendo did not mention the OS in any of its statements.

Pokémon Go has been on the market for two weeks now, and it already generated a worldwide craze, keeping people glued to their phones or tablets, getting individuals out of the house. Some users even speculated that the app was only launched for iOS and Android because of a secret deal between Nintendo and their producers.

What do you think about the fact that Pokémon Go on Windows Phone is momentarily just a dream? Are you one of the users that cannot access the app? How does that make you feel?

Milky Way Center Marked by X-shaped Structure

July 20, 2016 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

milky way center

Astronomers revealed they might have found an enormous X-shaped structure located right in the center of our Milky Way galaxy.

According to the scientists involved, the central bulge of the X structure is made of numerous stars, and its discovery was possible through a research effort funded by Twitter.

The center of the Milky Way – which is a barred spiral galaxy – is filled with hundreds of billions of stars, estimated to measure roughly 100,000 light years in diameter. Unlike conventional spiral galaxies, barred spiral galaxies like ours do not feature a bulge containing spiral arms.

Instead, the center has a particular bar-shaped or rectangular structure inside them and a bulge of constantly moving stars in its center. The intensive study of the Milky Way was possible thanks to the survey data provided by NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE).

It was back in 2010 when WISE surveyed the entire sky, leading astronomers to suspect that the center of the Milky Way includes an X-shaped structure. However, no one had a chance to observe it directly.

Last year, when the galactic maps generated by WISE were posted on Twitter, the curiosity regarding the central bulge of our galaxy came to the public’s attention again.

That allowed astronomers to review the galaxy’s structure thoroughly once more. In turn, the renewed research effort sparked by Twitter resulted in the unexpected findings of the X shape at the center of the galaxy.

What does the X mark tell us about Milky Way’s history?

“We see the boxy shape, and the X within it, clearly in the WISE image, which demonstrates that internal formation processes have driven the bulge formation,” explained Melissa Ness, one of the two researchers from Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany who were leading the study.

More conclusions about the history of our galaxy can be drawn from this discovery. According to Ness, the fact that the shape is fairly undisrupted suggests that the Milky Way has led a quiet life with little to no major merging events after the formation of the central bulge.

This research project could put an end to the longstanding debate about whether or not there is an X-shaped structure at the core of the Milky Way.

Apple Pay Expands to France, Hong Kong

July 20, 2016 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

Apple Pay is slowly expanding its access to more and more countries. On Tuesday, July 19, was the turn of France, the land of good wine, boutiques, and croissants.

Later the same day, Apple’s mobile payment service was also rolled out in Hong Kong. According to the French website for Apple Pay now shows the service is compatible with Mastercard and Visa debit and credit cards issued by Ticket Restaurant and Carrefour Banque.

Apple Pay in France

At the same time, users can also pay with Apple’s service through Caisse d’Epargne and Banque Populaire, which includes the country’s second-largest banking group (accounting for over 20 percent of current payment cards).

The website also listed Boon and Orange, two other issuers of French credit cards, as “coming soon” to Apple Pay.

On the other side of the world, Apple Pay for Hong Kong has partnered so far with Visa, American Express, and Mastercard credit cards from banks Bank of China (Hong Kong), HSBC, DBS, Hang Seng, and Standard Chartered. HKT and the Bank of East Asia will soon be made available, as well.

Making Apple Pay available in France and Hong Kong represents the second and third new regions that the service has expanded to this month only. Switzerland was the first to get Apple’s mobile payment service in early July.

In the United States, Apple Pay is one of the most well-established services among banks and retailers, as all four major US credit cards support it. But that’s not enough for Apple, which wants to achieve a greater presence abroad in light of rival services – like Samsung Pay and Android Pay – gaining traction.

Several French retailers have already jumped on the Apple Pay bandwagon. As per the official web page of the service, Apple Pay is supported by the Apple Store itself, Sephora, Bocage, Eram, Cojean, and Total, to name some on the list.

Users in France will also soon be allowed to add loyalty cards to the Apple Wallet app and then make purchases with Apple Pay by tapping into the loyalty points they accumulate.

Prior to this latest expansion, the service was already available in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Singapore, and China.

Germany Proposes the Introduction of Black Boxes in Self-driving Cars

July 19, 2016 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Tesla self-driving technology

It’s going to be a while longer before everyone gets on board with the whole self-driving idea. Just look at the recent headlines surrounding Tesla’s Autopilot test. People will need time to adjust to the concept of being driven around by their cars on public roads.

According to tech companies and automakers, there will be another stage between the current situation of the road traffic and the fully autonomous (level 4) vehicles.

Before self-driving cars will be capable of roaming around with no human intervention, they will still need a relatively alert human occupant behind the wheel, ready to take control of the vehicle if necessary.

It’s not just automakers behind the push for self-driving vehicles. Not only in the US but elsewhere, governments are also excited by the technology’s potential of significantly curbing the annual death toll caused by car accidents.

According to a Reuters report, Germany’s transport ministry wants to help drivers of self-driving cars to ease up a bit while they’re being transported from point A to point B. To do that, he proposed the cars to be equipped with the vehicle version of a plane’s black box.

In other words, the ‘drivers’ – who will still be required to sit behind the controls – will be more relaxed knowing that the car has on-board data recorders that keep an eye on its autonomous behavior.

Tesla electric car

More than any other automaker out there, Tesla has shown that the proposal is possible. The company’s electric vehicles are in continuous communication with Tesla’s servers.

Most importantly, the carmaker has shown it’s not afraid to check data logs after a crash to see exactly the state of the car at the time and what caused the crash.

The most recent kerfuffle has shown that Tesla did not involve Autopilot at all in a recent incident with its self-driving technology, causing a collective gasp in the media.

Other automakers are working on improving their semi-autonomous driving modes. At the moment, any Volvo, Tesla, or Audi (level 2 cars) has only one way of knowing if you’re an alert passenger: by monitoring if you’re holding the steering wheel or not.

It’s possible, however, that the next Audi A8 will also feature a camera that will check to see if the driver is capable of taking control in case of an emergency.

Scientists Spot More Humpback Whales In the Pacific Northwest

July 18, 2016 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

humpback whale

Researchers with whale-watching boats have reported an unprecedented number of humpback whales coming from Bellingham to British Columbia this summer, reaching the Pacific Northwest.

The past twenty years were rough for humpback whales, which are almost extinct due to the rise of commercial whaling. No whale has been spotted in the area during this time, according to Michael Harris, the executive director of Pacific Whale Watch Association.

However, according to a new study published in the Association Press, researchers have started spotting more of the distinctively shaped whale during the past couple of years. The can be seen in groups of 15 or 20 specimens swimming together in the Salish Sea this summer.

In Harris’ own words, “it’s humpback heaven out there right now.” Reports of whale sightings show that they migrate from Central America, Hawaii, and Mexico to Alaska.

In order to avoid hunters – one of the leading causes of their population downfall – the whales have altered their route to go through an inside passage and reach the north in spring.

The Salish Sea is somewhat of a pit-stop for the humpback whales, a place for them to rest before continuing the migration. Scientists have noticed a pattern that shows the mammals migrating to north waters to feed during spring, and to southern waters to breed in the fall.

humpback whale

What contributes to the increasing numbers of humpbacks?

According to Rhonda Reidy, director at Prince of Whales Whale Watching in Victoria, British Columbia, the conditions in the ecosystem and the ocean, in general, are affecting the food chain. In turn, this forces the whales to search for food in southern waters, leading to more sightings.

Usually, humpbacks look for small fishes (anchovy or sardine) and krill for sustenance; however, researchers have yet to discover what exactly they feed on during their time in the British Columbia and Washington waters.

The latest estimations show that there are roughly 85,000 humpbacks worldwide, with more than 21,000 specimens living in the eastern North Pacific.

According to Cascadia Research Collective in Olympia, some 1,600 whales are feeding around the west coast of North America at the moment, with around 500 localized in Washington and British Columbia.

There’s a Dark Hole Growing On Our Sun

July 16, 2016 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

there is a black spot growing on our sun

Even though there is a dark hole growing on our sun, NASA says there is no reason to worry.

A spacecraft belonging to NASA managed to capture a photo of the sun that sends shivers down the spine of viewers. It seems that there is a dark hole growing on our sun. While the photos are grim, researchers reassure people that there is no cause for alarm just yet.

The dark hole growing on our sun is in fact an astronomical event that occurs regularly on the atmosphere of the sun. Data shows that there is no reason for alarm, the phenomenon being normal, and no chance of immediate death was detected.

The coronal hole indicates the location of the areas with low-density where the magnetic field of the star opens up, communicating directly with the interplanetary space.

The dark hole allows the sun’s hot material to escape from the corona, speeding outward towards open space. This results in dimmer areas compared to the bright ones where a higher density of plasma brightens up the star.

“Coronal holes are the source of a high-speed wind of solar particles that streams off the sun some three times faster than the slower wind elsewhere,” NASA declared.

According to the Space Agency, the dark hole growing on our sun can even last for a couple of months. In some instances, the hole can actually end up covering 25 percent of the surface of the Sun.

A professional animator, Tom Yulsman, made a short animated video of the massive dark hole growing on our sun. He did this by using the photographs released by the Space Agency.

At first, the video is distressing because it shows the sun being slowly swallowed by the dark hole. Some viewers were under the impression that our star is shutting down, transforming itself into a black hole. However, scientists are advising people not to lose sleep over the phenomenon because it’s a natural phenomenon that does not affect the density of our star.

The only influence that the dark hole can have is the fact that the solar winds that result from the corona of the sun can lead to the formation of solar storms. These kind of storms are dangerous because they can create significant damage to the satellite and radio communication systems.
