South Korean Markets to Benefit Significantly from Samsung Listings

July 17, 2014 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

Things seem to be going quite well for Samsung as the South Korean giant anticipates the best second half since 1999. The Samsung group continues to take more businesses public and consequently recent stock sales have produced three times the Asian average.

south-koreaCredit Suisse, a leading global financial services company has projected that compared to last year companies might raise 30% more from initial and secondary public offerings in the seconds half, which would mean a total of 8.4 trillion won!

This year, the Korean listings rose 79% on average compared to an average of 21% for the region.
Samsung’s listed units comprise about 24% of the index and they are planning to take two more of their companies’ public. According to Daewoo Securities, the offerings might attract more chunks of foreign money to what is now Asia’s fifth largest stock market. The head of the corporate finance division at Daewoo Securities, Kim Sang-tae suggests that a significantly larger pool of competitive companies will be open for investment.

Samsung Everland disclosed its plan to list as early as the first quarter next year and Samsung SDS intends a float by the end of the year.

The following transactions will facilitate the evolution to holding company structure, at least which is what the analysts at Morgan Stanley and CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets suggest.

However factors such as the hospitalization of the chairman and the government ban of family owned conglomerates have contributed to a greater scrutiny of the group.

Nevertheless, the sales continue to help revive the fortunes of Korea’s stock arrangers after the second worst start to a year since the year 2008. The Director at Credit Suisse, Tan Kang expects the outlook to get better as large listings will bring a reviving change in the stumbling IPO market.

Illegal Freshwater Turtle Harvests get three Men Arrested

July 17, 2014 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission had banned the harvest of all local wild turtles for commercial purposes in 2009.
However in Lakeland Florida, wild life officials were forced to charge three men illegally selling, harvesting and buying 2100 pounds of fresh water turtles. The illegality was justified in the rationale that people should be able to see freshwater turtles in the wild and harvest them on a recreational basis rather than commercially.

According to Lt. George Wilson investigators in Polk and Seminole counties caught these mean poaching turtles. The turtles were to be sold illegally to a farm in Okeechobee. Thus, the men were charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors.

iPhone 6 – The Upcoming SmartPhone

July 17, 2014 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

Anticipatory anxiety is the worst, and we can relate to that. There are so many rumors and leaked information regarding iPhone 6 that it is next to impossible to distinguish what is right and wrong about the phone. Also the information is spread vastly over the internet which makes it difficult for people to follow the latest news regarding the phone. So we have compiled all the information we could find about the upcoming phone which will allow you to stay updated.
There is not much to say regarding the rumors that iPhone was to be released early in the year except for the fact that evidently they were incorrect. We now have some conclusive information regarding the release. The phone will be released in September, a year from the release of the iPhone 5s. In fact, we even have a launch date which was initially reported by MacRumours: Friday, 19th September 2014.

I’m sure many of you remember the rumors about Apple releasing different versions of the phone. That was initially true however we cannot say with assurity how that is exactly going to work and more recent information suggests that we may be only seeing the 4.7 inch version and the much anticipated 5.7 inch screen is facing delays due to practical technological problems. The scratch resistant sapphire front panel is also proving to be cumbersome, especially for the larger screen version. However there are still some who are convinced that Apple will release both versions at the same time, what can we say? Only time will ensure certainty.

We also know that Apple has struck a deal with GT Advanced technologies to manufacture sapphire glass at a plant situated in Arizona. Well, it’s not technically glass but it’s infinitely more durable than glass which will ensure that the iPhone is extremely difficult to crack or break.
Moving on to the camera, talk of Optical Image Stabilization was being passed around and the China Post quoted Nomura Securities who stated that Apple may adopt the OIS option with an 8MP camera instead of the rumored 16 MP camera. It seems plausible, in fact, probable that there may be differences in camera between the two models.

iphone-6

With the increasing demand for a bigger display, Apple has finally started to conform to popular opinion and come up with the idea of releasing a phablet and a phone. As mentioned above the phablet should have a 5.7 inch display while the phone should have one about 4.7 inches. While this seems pretty much set in stone, uncertainty surround the information regarding resolution. Typically we would expect Apple to make phones with similar resolutions for practical reasons such as ease for developers and ensuring a standardized way for apps to work for both devices however the increasing competition coupled with the fact that Apple will have to compete with the already released flagship phones like Galaxy S5, HTC One M8, Sony Xperia Z2 and Moto X2 we cannot conclusively say what Apple intends to do. Business Insider has reported a rather interesting rumor which suggests that Apple may use the quantum dot technology to achieve more accurate colors. This technology is not completely new as it has been previously used in Kindle Fire HDX and an apparent weakness of this technology is that some people complain of a light bleed around the edge of the screen.

Previously Apple used the same design for two similar products: 5S and 5C. Considering the expected size difference in both version of the upcoming iPhone 6 it seems obvious that the phones will be built differently. Most rumors speak of iPhone 6 taking design ques from the iPod Nano and the iPhone 5c. However since this will be a high end smartphone it will be made from metal which bring the anodized aluminum body of the iPod Nano to mind. Furthermore, we are likely to see more colors and smoother edges compared to the 5S. That’s it for now, we genuinely hope with all our mind and soul that the intense anticipation is not a complete waste and Apple rewards the patience of its loyal customers with something amazing.

Apple Appeals Against the Court’s Ruling for E-book Price Fixing

July 17, 2014 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

COLUMBUS: Ohio Attorney General Mike Dewine recently announced a proposed settlement of damages against Apple.inc for their involvement in the price fixing conspiracy in the e-books market. If the settlement agreement is approved by the U.S District Court for the Southern District of New York it will resolve claims for damages brought forward by Ohio and 32 other states.
Attorney General Dewine has emphasized the importance of challenging anti-competitive practices and the need to protect consumers from such practices. He suggests that the settlement seeks to provide relief to the consumers and e-book purchasers.
The amount consumers are to receive under the settlement is dependent upon the District Court’s decision for Apple’s appeal against the finding that the company violated antitrust laws and conspired with numerous publishers to raise e-book prices between 2010 and 2012. The appeal remains pending before the U.S Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Nationwide consumers are to receive $400 million in case the court’s ruling is affirmed. In case the appellate court is not able to reaffirm the court’s ruling and the ruling of Apple’s appeal is in their favor the settlement provides a significantly smaller recovery of $50 million.
Interestingly, the settlement combined with earlier settlements with the publishers will amount to twice the actual payable damages in case Apple is held liable and the appeal fails.
E-book purchasers all over the nation have received a total of $166 million in settlement funds paid by the following publishers which have been determined to be involved in the conspiracy: Penguin Group (USA), Inc. (now part of Penguin Random House); Holtzbrinck Publishers LLC d/b/a Macmillan; Hachette Book Group Inc.; Harper-Collins Publishers LLC; and Simon & Schuster Inc.
Notwithstanding the economic inefficiency or lack of cogency in the rationale for compensation these high amounts ought to fulfill the deterrent purpose of damages to say the least.
