Infrared Camera Catches Endangered Sea Turtles In Florida

July 27, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

A live stream cam has caught something that not many people have been able to witness; the birth of some loggerhead sea turtle hatchlings on a Florida Keys beach. About one hundred of the turtles were born.

4320683_G

The baby turtles – which measure at approximately three inches long – emerged from a mound on the Florida Keys beach and then proceeded to head towards the ocean, all while caught on camera. After they had entered the ocean, they disappeared from the camera’s view.

The camera – which films in high definition – was set up on the beach in order to capture some footage of the new hatchlings. The camera also films by utilizing infrared lenses so that any lights that would be needed otherwise would not affect the new hatchlings. Any artificial light that would be needed otherwise would have adversely affected the hatchlings, and would possibly have interrupted the process of them emerging from the mound and entering the sea.

The camera feed also helps in raising awareness for the efforts currently underway in Florida Keys to help raise awareness about the need to protect sea turtles. Loggerheads – the type of turtles that emerged from the mound on the beach – are among five different types of sea turtle that are currently considered either endangered or threatened, and that nest on Keys beaches and other Florida shorelines.

The webcam is currently funded by the Florida Keys tourism council, and was approved by both the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Nissan Recalling Over 220,000 Vehicles for Air Bags Problem

July 27, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Nissan is recalling over two hundred and twenty thousand more cars due to potentially faulty airbags, according to an announcement by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The announcement comes after more than one million cars were recalled after a separate recall was announced in March.

According to Nissan, they are:

“…recalling certain model year 2002-2003 Nissan Maxima, Pathfinder and Infiniti I35 and QX4; 2002-2004 Nissan Sentra and 2003 Infiniti FX vehicles to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts.

“A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.”

Nissan also went on to say that:

“In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger’s frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking and potentially seriously injuring the passenger seat occupant or other occupants.

“Owners of all vehicles on which a defective air bag may have been installed either as original equipment, or as a replacement, will be notified. Dealers will inspect vehicles, and where a defective air bag inflator is identified, the inflator will be replaced, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin August 11, 2014. Owners may contact Nissan Customer Service at 1-800-647-7261.”

The current recall is an extension to the recall in March, and Nissan has said that they are currently unaware of any injuries resulting from the faulty airbags. Nissan also noted that you can check whether or not your vehicle needs to be recalled by visiting their website.

Jolting Wearable Fitness Tracker for Successful Workout

July 27, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Working out regularly and successfully is the top reason why the Pavlok device was designed in motivating people of all ages to stay fit and healthy all the time. This unique motivation for workout device is not yet released on the market yet its creator and designer, Maneesh Sethi points out how the great features of this fabulous device can make you really do your workout schedule on time and on a regular basis to help you reach your goals.

The Pavlok device is a jolting wearable fitness tracker that lets you track your workout schedule or fitness routines and other activities. It lets you send powerful reminders daily and gives you a zap when you miss any workout schedule or activity based on your programmed setup.

The good thing about this device is that it lets you stay motivated to go on a regular exercise routine and pattern for your health and wellness goals. However, what most fitness experts question here is the way it sends shocks of about 30 to 340 volts once you miss your scheduled activity. Although Sethi points out reassuringly that these tiny shocks aren’t harmful for you, still fitness professionals ask whether these could really put all hard-headed individuals to keep up with their target each day for long term health and fitness goals for greater vitality and vigor. Will this be truly an effective motivator for a successful exercise program or not? Are you suitable for this kind of training device or do your prefer the nice and calm way of your personal trainer or gym instructor?

Jessica Smith, SHAPE magazine’s contributor and wellness coach, told ABC News that the most rewarding thing for long-term wellness success comes from clients themselves when they start to change their habits for a healthier lifestyle in action. Yet, Sethi firmly points out that the Pavlok device is all about changing habits.

Although this new device is not yet on market display, it will be available for pre-order slots later before this current year ends.

Praxada Popular Blood Thinner from Boehringer Ingelheim Not Safe

July 26, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Boehringer Ingelheim, a drug manufacturer, has come under fire for failing to report safety information to drug regulators in the United Kingdom and United States, according to recent reports.

As articles in the BMJ have suggested, the company may have knowingly lied about the safety of one of its bestselling drugs. The drug, Pradaxa, is a medication available through prescription that purports to reduce the risks of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm disorder associated with fainting, chest pain, palpitations and chronic heart failure.

Praxada was approved by the Food and Drug Authority in the United States in 2010, and of the main advantages it had over its competitors is that it does not require frequent blood plasma monitoring, which is needed by most other drugs that treat the ailment.

BloodViscosityHowever, as reported in the BMJ, many patients have started suffering from bleeding problems which are said to be caused by the drug. The BMJ articles have also insinuated that the taking of Pradaxa was one of the only common factors between each of the patients, aside from the original ailment which needed treatment. According to BMJ’s investigations editor, Deborah Cohen:

“Boehringer Ingelheim, the maker of dabigatran [Praxada], has failed to share with regulators information about the potential benefits of monitoring anticoagulant activity and adjusting the dose to make sure the drug is working as safely and effectively as possible.”

Although evidence purports to show the contrary, Boehringer Ingelheim has maintained that the drug is safe, going so far as to say that:

“Our company has provided regulators with the complete data set and analyses of clinical evidence demonstrating the efficacy and safety profile of Pradaxa, and FDA and European Medicines Agency (EMA) have affirmed RE-LY’s conclusions and stated that Pradaxa provides an important health benefit when used as directed.

AT&T launches Amazon Fire Phone in market for $200

July 26, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

The ‘Fire’ phone – Amazon’s newest unveiling and first foray into the smart phone market – has seen its launch, and, currently, AT&T have the exclusive rights to sell the phone. The unveiling took place on July 25, where AT&T announced two deals which can be taken advantage of alongside the purchase of the new smart phone.

As AT&T have said, you can purchase the phone – which is available both online and in stores – as part of a two year contract for $200, or $27.09 a month for the next two years with their Next instalment plan. This plan has the phone locked as a 32GB handset. Alternatively, you can purchase the 64GB handset for $299 or $31.25 a month with AT&T Next.

Amazon Fire Phone

Before its release, it was known as the 3D Phone because word on the street was that Amazon was implementing some sort of innovative 3D technology into the handset, although, as the new phone shows, this never materialized. The phone has also integrated five front cameras, four of which are used for the Dynamic Perspective.

Amazon has also noted that the phone has a 4.7-inch HD LCD display with 1,280-by-720 resolution at 315 pixels per inch as well as runnig a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, Adreno 330 GPU, and 2GB of RAM. The company has also noted that the phone has a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, and records in 1080p at 30 fps from the front- and rear-facing shooters. Although the phone comes with all this integrated fairly well, it does not include a microSD card slot.

Amazon has also said that:

“Firefly lets you instantly discover helpful information on over 100 million movies, songs, and products. Simply press and hold the Firefly Button on the side of Fire Phone to quickly capture and launch Web addresses, send emails, or make phone calls without typing addresses or phone numbers.”

The phone received a three and a half stars out of five from PCMag, based on the features mentioned above, as well as how well these features were integrated.

McLaren To Unveil New Car On August 16

July 26, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

McLaren, the British Formula One racing team, is set to unveil its concept model for its newest car, the P1 GTR concept design. The new design will be shown off for the first time at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California August 16.

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is considered to be one of the most competitive events in the auto industry, and this year, there will be approximately 200 of the rarest cars will be on show at the once a year event.

mclaren.p1-gtr-concept-design

Since first opening its doors, McLaren has prized itself on its objective of creating the world’s best track-focused drivers’ car, and this new design is set to be no different.

McLaren only plans to build 375 of the P1 GTR models, and to ensure that the cars go to what seems to be the best possible person – or more likely, those most loyal to McLaren – as well as to ensure exclusivity, only owners of McLaren P1 models will be able to purchase the GTR version when McLaren starts production in 2015.

The car is billed as being “track focused”, and as such does not need to meet road car regulations. McLaren have said that, to ensure the car is as good as possible, they have focused on “aggressive aerodynamics and styling, a widened track and slick tires” when designing the car. They car is also purported to have a mid-mounted engine, and, according to reports, McLaren are intending to have the engine give a power output of 1,000 PS.

The debut of the car will take place at the McLaren Brand Centre at the 18th Fairway at the Pebble Beach Lodge, on August 16 for exclusive viewers, and a public viewing will be taking place on the following day.

McLaren are intending to sell the car for $3,360,384.

California Police Seek Homeless Man suffering from Tuberculosis

July 26, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Police in North California have issued a arrest warrant for Eduardo Rosas Cruz, a homeless man who was diagnosed with TB earlier this week, but refused treatment. According to reports, the warrant was issued because police fear that the particular strain of TB which Cruz was diagnosed with may be highly contagious. Because of this, it is thought that he is a potential threat to others.

Cruz was diagnosed with TB back in March at the San Jaoquin General Hospital complaining of a severe cough, high fever and a shortness of breath. After he was diagnosed, he was told to stay in a particular motel, where medication would be delivered, and a nurse would watch him take it.

Eduardo Rosas Cruz

However, once he left the hospital, he was never seen by the hospital staff again. Medical officials then asked prosecutors to issue a warrant for Cruz’s arrest, as he is currently considered as on the run, and he can be seen as a threat to public safety. It has also been reported that he is from a part of Mexico that is known for its drug-resistant strain of TB.

Medical officials have also said that he is a drug user who is known for abusing Crack Cocaine and Methamphetamines, which not only intensify the onset of TB, but are also known for developing the disease into a drug resistant form if the users TB hasn’t already developed into a drug resistant strain.

San Joaquin County Deputy District Attorney Stephen Taylor told BBC News that:

“We’re interested in this guy because he broke the orders of the health officer. He could be in a homeless shelter. He could be around the corner from the courthouse. We don’t know.”

According to some reports, over nine million people were infected with TB in 2012, which resulted in over one million deaths.

Three New ‘Hot Jupiters’ Drier Than Expected

July 26, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Current theories of water levels on what are called Jupiter-Class planets may have taken a big hit with some recent discoveries. These theories suggest that a certain amount of water is needed in order for a planet to form.

The results of some recent examinations on these so called Jupiter-Class planets – i.e, planets that are somewhat similar to Jupiter – has shown that the heat of these planets is unexpectedly dry, a lot drier than experts have previously predicted.

The size and heat levels of these planets make it fairly easy for astronomers to examine the water levels – as well as other data – on these Jupiter-Class planets, which means that astronomers are currently working on several examinations of these planets, similar to one that examined the planets’ water levels.

jupiter

Due to the fact that these planets are suffering from a dry heat, water levels are much less than planet formation theories have predicted. If the abundances are substantially less than theories predict, as a growing body of evidence suggests for some of these planetary systems, fully characterizing the atmospheres of these planets would warrant a newer, and better, telescopes that are much more sophisticated than the ones we currently have, as well as telescopes that are currently in development.

The examinations of the three Jupiter-Class planets showed water concentrations well below solar abundances – something which previous theories have relied on. The measurements were only 1 percent of solar abundance for one of the planets examined, while another planet had .7 percent of solar abundance. However, these measure weren’t extremely precise, which means that the reality may be closer to what the theories have previously predicted.

Nikku Madhusudhan, who led the team that made these observations, has said that him and his team “are working on several scenarios of planet formation that can make hot Jupiters close to their stars that explains the low abundance that we see.”

Google Mapping Liberty and Ellis Islands

July 26, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Google is currently planning to map Ellis Island, as well as Liberty Island, in a move which sees Google mapping areas which previously did not have detailed mapping. According to reports, Google plans to get a full 360-degree rotational view of Ellis and Liberty Islands as well as a 3D map of the area.

Using a device called the Trekker, they will be compiling the data and getting the proper images for use on Google Maps. Google uses a variety of other tools in relation to collecting data for Google Maps, some of which collect and gather information from places typically only navigable by foot.

Google-Map-Logo

As Google have said several times before, the Trekker is a device can be strapped to a backpack and used while navigating a territory. The Trekker then stores the data it gathers for use later on in compiling Google maps, as well as Google images.

According to recent reports, as well as Google itself, it will take a number months before the mapping data will be live on Google Maps, as Google still need to map the areas, as well as analyse and compile all the necessary data to provide the images and maps.

Currently, most of New York’s land data has been available on Google Maps and Street View, and has been since about 2007. Most of this data has been in great detail, much like everywhere else that Google has maps for, both Ellis Island and Liberty Island and two areas where Google has so far not been able to map and release for the public’s use.

Liberty island has never been mapped before, because it is run by the National Park Service which had a vast amount of legal hoops for Google to jump through before they could start compiling data.

The mapping of the two islands began on Wednesday, July 23.
