E- Cigarettes – Blessing Or Curse?

May 13, 2014 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

An electronic cigarette is a battery powered device that produce smoke like the real cigarette but it is tobacco less device. It usually uses a heating element known as an atomizer that vaporizes a liquid solution. The liquid solution contains nicotine and some have various flavors.

The e-cigarette is developed by a Chinese Pharmacist who was a chain smoker but when his father; who is a heavy smoker died because of the black lungs he research and develop an e-cigarette.

It is clear that the only purpose of Chinese Pharmacist is to invent an alternative of tobacco cigarette and reduce the negative impacts of smoking. The purpose is to switch the smokers from traditional cigarettes to E-cigarette which is harm less.

But researches proof that this had not worked in the same direction. Companies introduced many variants of E-cigarette that attracts non-smokers but also the also attracts the kids.

The mouthwatering flavors such as, cookies and ice cream, gummy football candy etc. could easily attracts the kids and act as a gate way to encourage kids to become nicotine adductors.

There is no such law imposed till date that restricts sale of e-cigarettes to the kids, other than twenty states. As per a research, mostly hard smokers first tried the cigarette at a very young age.

As per a survey conducted for high school kids one of every tenth high school kid had tested a e-cigarette and according to the principal they have to dealt with at least one case every day.

Besides above concern about kids, doctors and consultants are not sure and can’t guarantee the level of “harmless” of these e-cigarettes. According to Erika Sward of American Lung Association, ‘So much is unknown about them and what the long-term complications could be with their use, Bottom line, we don’t know what the consequences of using them are, and we are very troubled that kids would find them attractive.”

However there is no evident of any bad-for-health thing in e-cigarettes but US Food and Drug Association did not like it at all. According to it, the e-cigarette is a power pack of toxic and harmful chemicals. So, the choice is yours.

FDA Approves Blood-Clot Medication Zonitivity for Heart, Stroke

May 9, 2014 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

The pharmaceutical company, Merck has created a new drug known as, Zonitivity, that can be used to diminish and reduce the chances and risks of stroke or cardiovascular death. But it is not recommended in patients who have a history of stroke or a traumatic head injury.

The FDA has recently given the company a go ahead for the new drug, Zontivity, which inhibits blood clots. It is a protease-activated receptor-1 (PAR-1) antagonist.

Produced by the American pharmaceutical manufacturer, Merch & Co., the new medication has the ability to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. It will be available shortly at all major retail pharmaceutical stores by name Zontivity.

Ellis Unger, the director of FDA’s Office of Drug Evaluation I, said, “In patients who have had a heart attack or who have peripheral arterial disease, this drug will lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death.”

https://www.virus.com.gr/site/media/k2/items/cache/fce01341774186a17457104171b805ae_XL.jpg

In patients with cardiovascular disease and arterial disease can take Zontivity to reduce their chances of stroke. However, when the new drug is compared with other blood-clot inhibitors in the market, Zontivity too, increases the risk of bleeding in patients by hindering platelets in the blood from clustering together. Due to these reasons, the FDA does not recommend Zontivity in patients who have suffered from a stroke or traumatic head injury, once in their life.

The approval of Zontivity has been reportedly delayed over safety concerns in patients suffering from other diseases, due to the fatal bleeding in some of the patients who were given Merck’s new medication during the clinical trials.

Zontivity will be a miracle drug for heart patients and will prevent myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular death in high-risk patients. It will improve the blood flow in patients who have had a attack or suffered from artery blockages.

Boko Haram Killed 310 People; Abducted Hundreds Of Girls

May 8, 2014 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan acknowledges that his country’s effort to subdue Boko Haram have not produced the results it had promised to the nation. But he is hopeful that this will be the beginning of the end of this terror group.

“I believe the kidnap of these girls will be the beginning of the end for terror in Nigeria,” said Mr Jonathan at the World Economic Forum in Abuja.

The attack this week left 376 people dead and the mass abduction of 276 kidnapped girls a month ago have brought Nigeria to the fore.

Abubakar Shekau, the leader of Boko Haram has made matters worse by admitting that he plans to sell the girls.

This week the town of Gamboru Ngala, a state capital was attacked in which some victims were burned alive.

Countries including United States, France, Britain and China have promised help to Nigeria for finding the girls, as the world outrage over the plight of 276 girls has grown.

The US President Barack Obama said in statement, “Every day when I wake up and I think about young girls in Nigeria or children caught up in the conflict in Syria, when there are times in which I want to reach out and save those kids. And having to think through what levers, what powers do we have at any given moment, I think drop by drop by drop that we can erode and wear down these forces that are so destructive.”

Pakistan Releases FBI Agent Joel Cox On Bail

May 8, 2014 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Pakistan has just released an FBI agent on bail, after a three days detention for carrying ammunition onto a flight.

The American agent was arrested on May 5 when the authorities at the Karachi airport found 15 bullets for a 9 millimeter handgun and three knives on him, during a routine check. Authorities say that Joel Cox was bound for Islamabad, the capital city.

He has been freed bail after submitting a surety bond of $10,000.

JenPaksi, U.S. State Department spokeswoman had confirmed the FBI agent’s arrest via a press statement on Wednesday, “This individual detained is an employee of the FBI who was on a temporary duty assignment to provide routine assistance to the legal attache at the U.S. mission.”

Psaki told the press that Washington is working closely with officials in Islamabad to resolve the issue.

Minutes before the bail announcement, Tasneem Aslam, spokeswoman for Pakistani Foreign Office said in her press statement, “Yes, an FBI official was arrested at Karachi airport. The Karachi police officials already have given some preliminary details, the matter is under investigation.”

She also said that Joel Cox was in Pakistan on a short-term visa for his temporary duty at the American embassy, and supposedly did not have diplomatic immunity.

Due to the War on Terror, the United States and Pakistan have had uneasy ties. The relations between the two countries took a major downturn in the year 2011, when a CIA contractor Raymond Davis killed two Pakistani men who he claimed were threatening him.

Later the U.S. Navy Seals had also killed Osama bin Laden on Pakistani soil which is followed by NATO troops misconduct that mistakenly led to the killing of 24 Pakistani soldiers on a border post with Afghanistan.

Thailand’s PM Yingluck Shinawatra Faces Impeachment

May 8, 2014 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

The recently deposed prime minister of Thailand, Yingluck Shinawatra faces impeachment that could ban her from the political field for five whole years. The impeachment is over a costly rice subsidy.

Thailand’s anti-corruption commission has ruled 7-0 to send this case to the Senate with recommendation of impeachment, that has led to enraged supporters who plan to lead mass protests across the country.

Thailand’s Commerce Minister, Niwatthamrong Bunsongphaisan, has been appointed interim prime minister after the deposition of Yingluck. Her deposition comes at a crucial time when elections are scheduled nationwide for July 20th.

Due to the mass protests by Yingluck’s supporters, Election Commission of Thailand has cast doubt on whether they could be arranged in such a deadlocked condition.

“We may have to postpone it,” said Election Commission’s Secretary General, Phuchong Nutawong.

The spokesman for the commision, Vicha Mahakun said, “Even though at this stage it appears that the evidence is not clear that the accused (Ms Yingluck) took part in corruption or allowed corruption or not, the accused did not govern the country as announced in parliament.”

Atmospheric CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) Comparatively Higher Than Last Year

May 5, 2014 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

The amount of carbon dioxide continues to increase even after the authorities have forced stricter emission standards for vehicles.

More than 402 ppm (parts per million) levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide (a green house gas that modifies climate change) have been recorded through a special monitoring equipment placed atop the Hawaiian mountain.

This is the highest recorded level of atmospheric carbon dioxide ever.

The data was reported by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California–San Diego, under the daily record of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/files/2013/05/mlo_record.png

Another high level of about 400 ppm or 0.04%, was recorded in mid-May, 2013. With the new record it is anticipated that the annual CO2 peak will be higher in the mid of May as compared to last year’s figure.

Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations were at 313 ppm when efforts were initially made to record CO2 levels atop Hawaii’s Mauna Loa volcano in the year 1958.

The chart that documents the rise of carbon dioxide concentrations in detail is called the Keeling Curve. It is named after the founder of CO2 monitoring program, Scientist Charles David Keeling, at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

On April 7, an increase in the level of CO2 was recorded at 402.20 ppm, which is slightly different from the level that was presented by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) at 402.11 ppm.

There has not been any consensus on the level of CO2 concentrations matching to this year’s record. But some estimates show, that the records match CO2 concentrations of 800,000 to 15 million years ago, based on the analysis conducted on the air bubbles recovered in Antarctica’s ice cores.

Since billions of years, the Earth has experienced higher CO2 levels, caused mainly by environmental factors, that usually include variations in the solar-energy output and planet’s orbit. But it must be noted that at the time there weren’t 7 billion human beings inhabiting the Earth.

White House Releases Guidelines to Combat Rape in Colleges

April 29, 2014 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

On Monday, the White House took one step more in its effort of combating rape on university and college campuses across the country when it released a new report.

The report consisted of 20 pages. A special task force was step up to produce the report and included Arne Duncan the Secretary of Education and Eric Holder the Attorney General.

The group spent three months compiling recommendations from talking with many people.

The task force is interested in finding out more about the scale and scope of the problem. Statistics were cited in the report from the National Institute of Justice, which said that 1 in 5 women experienced attempted rape or rape during college.

This year the group is pushing institutions of higher learning to use its 2015 tool kit to survey their own campuses. Before 2016, the task force will start making reports. It is planning to explore administrative or legislative options requiring school to carry out the survey.

In 2011, schools were first alerted by the administration about the responsibilities they had to sexual violence survivors. The administration announced that schools under Title IX must address the sexual violence issue to provide an equal access to all for education.

However, schools struggled with that. Over the last three years, many of the schools have been cited publicly for not living up to the standards.

The most recent is when the U.S. Department of Education announced that Tufts University had failed to comply in the way it handles issues related to sexual assaults.

The university wrote it was disappointed and surprised with the government’s finding and added it had a deep commitment to the well-being and safety of its students.

Now the White House has decided to get more specific. It has now emphasized the importance of using confidential advocates. This clarifies what was confusing for many that not all on college campuses have a duty to report.

Recently campus officials have said that all their employees needed to report every detail of what happened to officials. However, the report said that could mean control is quickly lost by the survivor over what takes place next.

Many advocates insist the survivors should never lose control over what takes place next.

The White House report calls for more training for those dealing with sexual violence issues on campuses across the country.
