100 years passed since the death of the passenger pigeon

September 1, 2014 By Michael Turner Leave a Comment

The last living female passenger pigeon named as Martha died at the Cincinnati zoo in 1914.  Martha was the last creature left in its entire generation. The bird had ruled the sky of America for several years since it was once the most common species like wild turkey. The most fascinating thing of this wild blue dove is that it can flock in millions at a time.
People loved to eat  and shot them because of which they died more speedily. A number of authors have referred the passenger pigeons in their books and numerous artists have painted them.

Generally, passenger pigeons symbolize the American spirit of  struggle and self-determination. Whereas, most of the people consider it as the story of the people that took the land.

The passenger pigeon was quite dissimilar from the city pigeon. They had a blue smooth and shiny body along with wings of blue color. They used to fly together in billions, even if they are migrating from north to south.

Martha and two other dead pigeons will be displayed today at the Smithsonian. It is now centennial celebrations of the dead pigeons due to which the museum exhibited behind a glass wall. Few scientists and researchers are struggling to bring back passenger pigeons to life  through experimentation.

ADHD Medicines, Drugs doesn’t Stunt Height or Affects Child’s Growth

September 1, 2014 By Michael Turner Leave a Comment

Shedding the concerns over the stunted child’s growth due to the usage of stimulants for treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a new study has found that this type of medication has no adverse impact on the children’s final height in adulthood.

ADHD is the most common childhood neuro-developmental disorders that could often last into adulthood. It is commonly treated through a stimulant medication.

Between 70 and 80 percent of children with ADHD respond positively to stimulants, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report said.

Five percent of children suffer from ADHD, the American Psychiatric Association said. However, these figures are said to be higher in the US. According to recent surveys of parents, it was found that around 11 percent of children between age group 4 and 17 years have been diagnosed with ADHD as of 2011. This makes the total affected from the disease to 6.4 million.

Children who suffer from this neurological disorder face difficulty in paying attention and controlling their impulsive behavior. They are found to be overly active.

According to the CDC, the risk factors or underlying causes that lead to the disorder are not known but genetic problems may play a significant role.
For studying the relation between stimulant medications and final adult height, the researchers involved 340 children with ADHD. All the participants were born between 1976 and 1982. The researchers compared the final height of the participating children when they turned adults with a control group of 680 children without the neurological disorder.

Following analysis of participants’ height and their stimulant treatment information during their adulthood, the researchers found that both ADHD and stimulant treatment were not linked with final height in adulthood.

“Our findings suggest that ADHD treatment with stimulant medication is not associated with differences in adult height or significant changes in growth,” the research group said.

The findings of the study were published in the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) journal Pediatrics.

Tomatoes beneficial in lowering risk of prostate cancer

August 29, 2014 By Michael Turner Leave a Comment

A new research has shown men who eat tomatoes over 10 portions a week are likely to have 18 percent lower risk of developing prostate cancer.

A data shows 35,000 of new cases arising every year in UK, and a toll of 10,000 deaths due to this takes place. Prostate cancer ranks second most common among men worldwide.

It is seen that the rates are higher in developed countries which is considered linked to the diet pattern and lifestyle.

A study was conducted by the researchers at the Universities of Bristol, Cambridge and Oxford who observed the diets and lifestyle of 1,806 men aged between 50 and 69 with prostate cancer and compared with 12,005 cancer-free men.

The NIHR-funded study, published in the medical journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, is the first study of its kind to develop a prostate cancer ‘dietary index’ which consists of dietary components — selenium, calcium and foods rich in lycopene — that have been linked to prostate cancer.

Men who had lower intake of these three were less likely to get prostate cancer.

Tomato juice and baked beans were found to be advantageous, with an 18 per cent reduction in risk found in men eating over 10 portions a week.

This is thought to be due to lycopene, an antioxidant which fights off toxins that can cause DNA and cell damage. Vanessa Er, from the School of Social and Community Medicine at the University of Bristol and Bristol Nutrition BRU, led the research.Studies suggest that tomatoes may be important in curbing prostate cancer; however some extensive studies are required to confirm it. Men should still maintain a healthy diet of vegetables and fruits to stay active and healthy.

Fruits, vegetables and dietary fibre are associated with reduced risk of prostate cancer.

Decrease in Water Level, Increase in the Mountains

August 23, 2014 By Michael Turner Leave a Comment

U.S Experts have informed that the present drought badly affecting regions of the western United Stated. Due to this drought more or less 63 trillion gallons of water have been lost which is equal to 4 inches of water on every square mile of the intact region.

Undoubtedly, drought can have an impression on the local ecology in a several forms. Recently, researcher revealed a novel breakthrough in this matter.

The researchers of The Scripps Institution of Oceanography have figured out that drought is compelling the mountains to rise.

As reported by the San Diego team of the University of California that the crust of Earth has increased 4mm since as compared to last year. Whereas the crust in the California mountains has risen up to 15 mm which is approximately 4 inches. The team has accumulated this data from GPS stations which usually provide services for the purpose of earthquake activity.

It does not mean that mountains are growing larger. It is associated with a type of elasticity. In the winter season the water pushes the surface of Earth (crust) down. The reason behind this is that in winter the air is usually heavier and water is in a great quantity.

On the other hand, this process is quite slow in the summer season because evaporation removes some of the water present in the ground.

Oculix An Amazing Trip Through Netflix Catalogue

August 22, 2014 By Michael Turner Leave a Comment

A group of Netflix programmers fused company’s video with the virtually reality capability. It is presented by the Oculus Rift headset as a fun project Netflix Hack Day.

This application allows the customers of Oculix to surf through a floating 3D Netflix video catalog with the help of gestures. These gestures include turning of head and hand movements which make it fun for users to view a video in a VR theater setting.

Eric Smith, an analyst of Strategy Analytics stated that this new experience is probably an extremely persuasive differentiator for a mature service like Netflix. It will help the company remain on the top of the market. Though it is not suitable for common usage since the user can get perplexed through it.
Motion sickness could also be a major problem even though developments in VR technology are continuously explaining the problem.

Moreover, Smith said that no doubt the company has always lead the way in streaming special content since the last decade. The release of 4K video services in 2014 made the company more influential. This constant struggle helps Netfilx a lot in competing with its rivals.

Brian Blau, a research director at Gartner expressed that this communication with video through VR is quite appealing. Managing the video through gesture is far better than the typical remote control.

Is Universe a 2-D hologram? Scientists are Sorting

August 21, 2014 By Michael Turner Leave a Comment

U.S Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory executed a unique experiment. The scientists have invented a Holometer which is the most sensitive instrument to assess the quantum jitter of space.

The machine begins to accumulate the data which will resolve some tricky question linked with the universe, such as whether we live in a hologram.
The information regarding the Universe is determined in tiny packets in two dimensions. If we look closely to our T.V screens, then we will see small pixels. In the same way scientist believes that the information associated with the Universe is also comes in pixels. The experts consider  natural “pixel size” is nearly of 10 trillion trillion times tinner as compared to an atom. This distance is generally known as “ Plank scale” among the scientists.

Craig Hogan, director of Fermilab’s Center for Particle Astrophysics stated that researchers wish to know whether the space time is a quantum system like matter or not. If scientists discover anything similar to it, then the entire notion of space will change in an instant.

Quantum Theory proposed that it is out of the question to know about accurate location and speed of subatomic particles.  If space is formed by 2-D bits with incomplete information about the exact position of objects, then space would come into the same category of uncertainty.

Basically,  the experiment investigates the limits of the universe that how much information it can store.
