May 14, 2014 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Transforming the show’s infectiously hummable theme song into an 8-bit masterpiece and setting the bloody tale of warring clans in Super Mario World’s Dinosaur Land. YouTube user NicksplosionFX has given the intro to HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ the 16-bit treatment.

Internet suffering is an admirable job and this makes the internet more attractive.

Mario and Luigi competing for the Mushroom Throne against the Mad King Bowser and Princess Peach, who directs an army of Yoshis. Throw Wario and the dozen or so other Super Mario side characters into the mix and you have fan fiction gold! I can imagine it now easily.

A fan-made video shows us how Game of Thrones’ intro looks like using Super Mario World sprites and it even has the intro score done in 8-bit.

Asthma – A Minor Disease Or Need Your Attention?

May 14, 2014 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways pigeonholed by variable and recurring symptoms, reversible airflow obstacle and bronchospasm

Wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and shortness of breath are the common symptoms of asthma.

It is caused by the various genetic and environmental factors. The diagnosis based on the pattern of symptoms and response towards medications.

Asthma is diagnosed usually as per the symptoms and the level of seriousness is also determined through the response towards the symptoms. But due to the lack of the awareness asthma related cases are resulted as deaths of several people. The mainstream of asthma-related hospital visits and deaths are avoidable. Many patients do not view their symptoms as serious enough to permit treatment or control.

The attitude of these patients leads the minor symptom to an uncontrollable threat. People whose asthma is not under control can possibly be terrified into a lethal situation by the illness.

astAsthma UK wrote to the newspaper “People with very severe asthma have told us of problems doing even simple things like walking, dressing, caring for children, doing the shopping or getting a full night’s sleep, Let us be in no doubt; asthma is serious”.

To control asthma is advised that asthma sufferers avoid triggers and factors that encourage symptoms. For example, dust sets off a person’s asthma; they should avoid outdoor activities or at least cover the face with masks.

ba

It appears asthma occurrence is swelling globally. Currently, approximately 300 million people around the world have asthma. This number is predicted to grow by more than 10 Billion by 2025.

The reason of the occurrence and increase in number is not known and clear but this is for sure that asthma is not a minor decease. We should take precautions as much as possible to safe ourselves and people around us.

Flu Season Gets Worse As 35 States Hit

January 11, 2014 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

In the U.S., the flu season has begun to get worse with the sickness now spreading into more than 35 states, up from the 25 the previous week, according to the Center for Disease Control that released a report on Friday.

Lyn Finelli an expert on flu with the CDC said in the weekly reports on flu that the season has yet to peak, but it is still too soon to determine if it will be worse than what is considered normal.

Thus far, the numbers are not as high as last year. The amount of people that have visited doctors for flu symptoms climbed to over 4% of all visits to the doctor last week, which was near double from just two week before.

North Carolina health officials reported on Thursday that the death toll due to seasonal flu had increased by 2 to 21. Of the deaths, 19 were young or middle-age adults, of which most had underlying medical conditions. Just two of the deaths reported were in people older than 65.

State officials in health said the flu activity was widespread in many states since the middle of December. The season usually does not peak until late January and into February.

Health officials in Washington said on Friday that the state had 11 deaths this season. King County had accounted for five deaths, which is expected since it is the population center for the state. Last season, there were 54 flu deaths officially reported for Washington.

Officials in Washington said the number of deaths was not unusual but that the department urged everyone older than 6 months to be vaccinated.

In Nevada, there have been five deaths in Washoe County, while two-middle aged people and one elderly person died in Clark County.

Officials said people could still have a flu vaccination. Even though the season peaks in January or February, officials warned that it continues many times into spring.

Besides getting a vaccine, it is recommended that people wash their hands frequently, cover their mouths and nose when sneezing and cough to stop as much as possible the spread of germs.

Samsung Electronics Pressured By Shareholders

January 7, 2014 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

The world’s biggest smartphone maker, Samsung Electronics, based in South Korea, has sparked calls from shareholders for dividends after it splashed out what was estimated to be $1 billion on an employee bonus.

Apple’s arch rival drew from its nearly $50 billion in cash to mark a 20-year anniversary, just months after it was criticized by shareholders for not spending enough to make its dividend yield higher.

The bonus was to commemorate the New Management strategy of Lee Kun-hee the chairman and hit the operating profit for the October to December quarter, which Samsung said was likely to fall 6% compared to the same period last year, and 18% from the third quarter which was a record $7.8 billion.

Initial estimates on the street put the new bonus at nearly about $650 million, but the extent of the decline in profit reflects a bonus of close to $1 billion. That amounts to a bonus of approximately $4,000 for each of the 240,000 employees.

Because of the bonus, the profit for the fourth quarter is expected to fall below the lowest forecast amongst analysts of 8.8 trillion won, which is the lowest since the second quarter of 2012 when profit was 8.1 trillion won.

Like the majority of companies in South Korea, Samsung has kept a low dividend yield at about 1% or even less, which is the biggest reason its shares are not as valuable as some peers are around the global.

Shares at Samsung experienced their first decline annually during 2013 in over five years due in part to the conservative return policy for shareholders at the company. This came despite operating profit most likely increasing by over 28% to $36.8 trillion won.

Shares were down in Asia on Tuesday by 0.2%, while the broader market was up by 0.3%.

Returns have been around 5.1% of profits, which is the lowest since Samsung purchased back some shares in 2007, when its rate of return has been 15.8%.

Lee took control of Samsung in 1987 from the original founder, his father. In 1993, he ordered his top executives to change everything, with the exception of your wife and children to transform the company from a television set maker to a global leader in technology.

Rates of Obesity Soaring in Developing Nations

January 5, 2014 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

The problems with obesity are no longer just in the United States. The dangerous epidemic that has been long-associated with the West is now beginning to take hold in developing nations such as India and China. This has caused the countries to see many people packing on extra weight.

The Overseas Development Institute, in a new report called Future Diets, used information that covered a period of 28 years from Mexico, China and India, amongst other countries, to demonstrate a trend in developing nations towards obesity. The analysis done by the ODI revealed that from 1980 to 2008 obesity tripled in the developing nations that were examined, which resulted in over 904 million people obese.

According to results from the research, India alone currently has as many as 1.46 billion people considered obese or overweight, with a national rate of 11% for those considered obese or overweight.

In China, a similar rated for obesity is seen amongst young adults, particularly people between 20 and 39 years of age, with overall obesity rates in the country double what it was only 3 decades ago.

The ODI report also showed that there is a greater percentage of obese in poor countries compared to in wealthier nations. The 904 million people considered obese or overweight in the developing nations compares to only 557 million in the majority of industrialized nations.

Many countries that see their people as not having enough food to eat are also the same countries seeing a dramatic increase in their obesity rates.

The paradox is relatively recent and has researchers and scientists looking for reason behind the new trend.

Increases in median income amongst countries most effected, couple with lowering prices of food in the same countries appear to be what is driving the soaring rates of obesity in India, China and other similar nations.

Blame also must be placed on the increase of media and advertising campaigns regarding foods, much of which are unhealthy and full of calories. Higher consumption of salt, sugar and fat has been associated with industrialization. However, the diets across the different nations are not necessary similar.

Consumption in India of animal products has increased, but in dairy products not meat, while in China the increased in consumption of animal products means more meat is consumed.

Facebook in Court Over Alleged Scanning of Messages

January 3, 2014 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Facebook is now facing a class action suit over more allegations that it has monitored users’ private messages. The lawsuit alleges that when users send another website’s link by means of a private message, Facebook scans it in order to profile the web activity of the sender.

The suit also alleges that Facebook intercepts messages on a systematic basis to store user data and in turn profits by sharing that data with data aggregators, marketers and advertisers.

The social media site has called the allegations without merit. The site added that it would defend itself vigorously.

The lawsuit is requesting the greater of $100 a day for each day the alleged violations occurred or $10,000 each for users that were affected.

The lawsuit, which was filed early in the week, cites research that it says found that Facebook reviews the contents of private messages of its users for purposes unrelated to the ease of message transmission.

The suit says users believe they are communicating on a social service free of surveillance and likely will reveal facts about themselves or others that would not otherwise be revealed if the content were known to be monitored.

In other words, said the suit, Facebook is positioned to acquire parts of the profiles of its users that likely are not available to other data collectors.

However, some have come forward and defended Facebook. One security expert wrote in one of this blogs that if Facebook did not examine links that users shared privately Facebook would not be carrying out its duty to care for its users.

The expert said if the links are not properly checked and scanned there is a real risk that scams, span, malicious URLs and phishing attacks could infect the computers of recipients with their malware.

Facebook has received criticism for its policies on privacy. Last year in September, it faced harsh criticism over its proposed change to a privacy policy in which would ads to be created by using photos and names of users on Facebook.

Facebook claimed the proposal only clarified the language of the privacy policy and did not make material changes in it.
