Molecular Structure of Water at Gold Electrode Unearthed For the First Time

October 26, 2014 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Whenever a solid is dipped in liquid, the liquid next to the object is molecularly unlike than the bulk of the liquid. If the surface is charged, this dissimilarity can increase even further. In the past it was difficult to understand the molecular structure of the solid-liquid interface. However this is exactly what has been achieved by the researchers at the DOE/Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Researchers have been able to observe the molecular structure of liquid water at gold surface in varying charging conditions. The discovery was published in a recent edition of the journal Science. The discovery will have immense potential and will help researchers understand a variety of biological phenomenon.

Miquel Salmeron, a senior scientist in Berkeley Lab’s Materials Sciences Division (MSD) and professor in UC Berkeley’s Materials Science and Engineering Department said, “At an electrode surface, the build-up of electrical charge, driven by a potential difference (or voltage), produces a strong electric field that drives molecular rearrangements in the electrolyte next to the electrode.”

To determine the arrangement of the molecules next to the electrode surface the researchers used x-ray spectroscopy to probe the interface. The problem was that the XAS technique required the process to be carried out in vacuum and this caused the liquid to evaporate. To get over this problem the researchers made use of a very thin x-ray transparent window in the order of 100 nm, or a tenth of a micrometer with a thin coating of Gold. With this arrangement, the team was able to exposé the water molecules to x-ray without any risk of it getting evaporated.

It was critical for the researchers to determine which part of the current was caused by the x-rays or battery. To achieve this researchers “pulsed the incoming x-rays from the synchrotron at a known frequency,” which enabled the researchers to segregate the current. The experiment enabled the team to achieve absorption vs. x-ray energy curves (spectra) that explained how water molecules within the nanometers of the gold surface absorbed the X-ray. Finally employing a supercomputer the researchers conducted simulations of the gold-water interface. The x-ray absorption spectra of the predicted structures were calculated.

David Prendergast, a staff scientist in the Molecular Foundry and researcher in the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR) explained, “These are first-principles calculations. We don’t dictate the chemistry: we just choose what atomic elements are present and how many atoms. That’s it. The chemistry is a result of the calculation. The main thing we know about the gold electrode surface from the x-ray absorption spectra: how many water molecules are tilted one way or another, and if their hydrogen bonds are broken or not. Water next to the electrode has a different molecular structure than it would in the absence of the electrode.”

2.6 Million Years Ago, Megalodon Sharks Was Terror Of Ocean

October 26, 2014 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

An antiquated shark, the biggest to ever live, likely went terminated around 2.6 million years back, researchers have found.

While scientists don’t know why titan, 60-foot-long Megalodon sharks went terminated, researchers now have a superior assessment for when it happened.

Most Megalodon fossils go over to the center Miocene Epoch (15.9 million to 11.6 million years prior) and the Pliocene Epoch (5.3 million to 2.6 million years back).

The specialists in the new study distinguished 42 of the latest fossils in the wake of sorting through the Paleobiology Database – a vast online accumulation of fossil information.

The group utilized the Optimal Linear Estimation (OLE) strategy to gauge when the Megalodon ceased to exist, ‘Live Science’ reported.

Each of the 42 fossils was entered into the database with an upper and lower date gauge for when it showed up. The specialists ran 10,000 recreations, and every reproduction chose a date for every fossil some place between the upper and lower limit.

The procedure doesn’t pinpoint the accurate date when an animal categories went wiped out, however rather gives the date by which, factually, it can be accepted that an animal types has become terminated, said Chris Clements, an exploration right hand at the University of Zurich, who took a shot at the study.

“We get 10,000 appraisals for the time the species has become terminated by, and after that we take a gander at the appropriation of those evaluations through time,” Clements said.

The thought is to distinguish the point where a large portion of the evaluations group. The results for the Megalodon fossils set that point for this species at 2.6 million years prior.

Cancer Treatment: Stem cells, a New Approach in Cancer Therapy

October 26, 2014 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

The conventional modern day cancer therapy rests on chemotherapy and radiation, both of which causes massive damage to normal cells and left the patient severely weakened and perilously clinging to life. Worse the above mentioned treatments caused a number of side effects and often patients succumbed to the side effects of cancer therapy than the disease itself. How nice it will be if a method which is safe and acts only on the cancerous cells is perfected. Thankfully this is going to be possible in the coming days. A method which has been tried in mice successfully is now ready for human trials.

Harvard Stem Cell Institute scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital have developed a new method to use stem cells in the fight against brain cancer. A research team led by neuroscientist Khalid Shah, MS, PhD, who recently verified the use of stem cells laced with cancer-killing herpes viruses, now has a perfected a method to genetically engineer stem cells so that they can produce and secrete tumor-killing toxins.

B0007209 Lung cancer cell

Shah’s and his research team demonstrated how the toxin-secreting stem cells can be used to kill cancer cells remaining in mouse brains after their main tumor has been removed. The details have been published in the AlphaMed Press journal STEM CELLS.

It is a completely new approach to cancer treatment. Special stem cells which were cropped in laboratory were able to destroy cancer cells without affecting the normal cells. The method was perfected in a laboratory where the laboratory stem cells were surrounded in a gel and the gel was placed on the brain that had previously been occupied by the tumor. The cancerous cells around the spot were quickly killed by the toxins released by the stem cells.

The method could be replicated in humans and the chances of its success are very high. Scientists agree that the toxins produced by the stem cells are very potent and can kill the cancerous cells. Such an approach has been used in the treatment of blood cancer and the same method is being used in the treatment of solid cancerous tumors for the first time.

The use of stem cells to fight cancer is a new concept and will lead to better prognosis and patient compliance.

Scientists fear – Space may make astronauts infertile

October 26, 2014 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Researchers expect that being in space for quite a while may make both male and female space travelers barren, as studies propose.

Analyzes in creatures demonstrate that space radiation reasons harm to the sperm propagation of men and to ovaries of ladies.

In a study directed via specialists at University of Kansas’ Department of Molecular Integrative Physiology, they discovered that when rats are lifted up on their rear legs, there are changes to their cells that influence their sperm generation, making them barren. The rats were raised to reproduce the conditions in space.

Past studies directed in Russia demonstrated that female and male rats which were sent into space in 1979 did not mate. An alternate study demonstrated that when male rats were set in zero gravity, they generally won’t create sperm, Telegraph UK reported.

Dr. Tash said that they are not certain if the same conditions apply to people, however he said that presentation to radiation could influence the ovaries, eyes, and testes. The U.s. space office is currently contemplating the mating of mice who are ready for ISS (International Space Station) to perceive how grave the issue is.

NASA is likewise worried about the issue, and is as of now offering sperm and egg solidifying for space explorers, particularly since they are get ready for the Mars One mission, which is situated to send the first team on Mars in 2025.

Dr. Tash likewise said that the testes are the piece of the body that is the most touchy to radiation, with the eyes being the following generally delicate. A lot of space travelers who have used around six to eight weeks in space returned with eye issues.

Moreover, investigations demonstrate that space influences sperm in such a route, to the point that they swim quicker in space. In any case, the impact of having speedier sperm is still obscure.

A Mammoth Tsunami Hit Hawaii 500 Years Ago

October 21, 2014 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

Recently, the researchers have revealed the evidence of a destructive earthquake that brought a tsunami on the Kauai’s Island about 500 years ago and there is a possibility that a similar event could hit Hawaii’s shores in the coming future.

The Live Science reported, “The earthquake with the magnitude of 9.0 happened in Alaska and brought 30-foot tall waves to Hawaii between 1425 and 1665. In contrast, the resulting tsunami was at least 3 times the size of a tsunami that caused damage in Hawaii in 1946.”

The study is published in the ‘Geophysical Research Letters’ journal. The researchers investigated a sinkhole 328 feet from shore with walls 23 feet high. David Burney, a paleoecologist at the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Kalaheo, discovered the site back in the late 1990s, but his theory that a massive tsunami left the ocean debris found in the sinkhole was not verified until now.

In a recent study, Honolulu officials have modified their tsunami evacuation maps in case a destructive tsunami hits the region of around a million residents. As per the American Geophysical Union press release, the evacuation areas will be more than double in some locations on the new maps.

A tsunami, to the size of the one in the study is projected to happen once every 1000 years, making the odds that it will happen in any given year quite small at 1%.

Butler, a geophysicist at the University of Hawaii at Manoa stated that, “People have to at least appreciate that the possibility is there.”

The sinkhole left by the tsunami that struck 500 years ago holds a layer of sediment with distinct traces of the ocean: coral fragments, mollusk shells and beach sand. The sediment remained a mystery until the 2011 Tohoku earthquake hit Japan and pulled tall, damaging waves inland to flood the island nation.

Butler further stated that, “The Japan’s earthquake was bigger than almost any seismologist ever thought. The live coverage showed the devastation it caused, I wonder, did we get it right in Hawaii? Are our evacuation zones the correct size?”

October 16th Event: What To Expect This Time?

October 15, 2014 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

Apple intends to unveil several new products at its upcoming October launch event. The company has already sent the invitations for this event. Apple has not yet announced anything regarding the details of the event. It seems like it is a tradition of Apple to keep everything secretive in order to create more hype for the future products.

However, rumors suggest that Apple will release iPad 6, iPad mini 3, new Mac, OS Y Yosemite and numerous other devices in it.

Apple has organized this special event on the 16th of October in California. The event will begin at 6 p.m by UK time.

In this review, we will cover the basic details of the products that the company planned to release in October.

Apple TV:

It’s nearly a year since Apple upgraded its media streamer with any major update. Therefore, the company might unveil a new hardware or minor software update for Apple TV.

Apple TV

According to rumors, Apple plans to release the voice feature of Siri in the future Apple TV update. However, the company has not yet declared anything but Siri feature would certainly be a big help for its users.

On the other hand, some speculations proposed that the company might probably release a brand new Apple TV set.  No doubt, it would be a big surprise for the Apple TV lovers if company flaunted something as huge as new Apple TV set instead of minor updates.

iPod Touch:

It looks like in this event Apple is merely determined to upgrade and launch things for old products. The last update for iPod Touch was released two years back in 2012.

However, latest rumors indicate towards an update rather than a new iPod Touch as it is pretty difficult to launch a new iPod Touch for the company at this time.

Some people believe that the wide range of iPhones and smartphone affected negatively to the iPod market. Nevertheless, it is not true there are still millions of iPod users who prefer the iPod Touch over latest phones.

The best way to make assumptions is to look back on the trend of the company. In August Apple slashed the price of iPod Touch which signifies that the company is all set to release a new iPod Touch 6th generation.

MacBook Air Retina:

This is one of the most disliked rumors associated with the October event. The chief reason behind this is that the rumor related to the arrival of new MacBook Air Retina is hovering since last two years. People are now fed up of this waiting tradition of Apple.

There are people who still think that Apple will unveil a new MacBook Air retina in this event. However, some rumors recently surfaced which stated that the Apple would not the new 12 inch ultraportable laptop with a Retina display till the beginning of the next year.

4K Display:

Earlier some rumors proposed the release of a 4K display, which supports connection with a MacBook Pro or MacBook pro Retina.

As per the news of Digi Times there might be a 27 inch 5K Retina iMac display at the upcoming event. If these rumors are true, then you cannot expect a 4K display from Apple at least in this event.

OS X Y Yosemite release:

In June Apple flaunted the first look of the new Mac operating system. The company showed OS X Y Yosemite in the Apple World Wide Developer Conference.  The company sets out the operating system in beta form, whereas the full launch of OS X Y Yosemite is expected in this event.

What about the Galaxy Note Edge? As we said before Samsung has not made any announcement on the Galaxy Note 4 release date. With Samsung’s website only mentioning ‘coming soon’ for the new Note phablet variant, we can at least feel that the Note Edge is not going to arrive soon in the coming month.

The Clove Technology retailer which has already listed the Note 4 on their website claims that the Note Edge won’t be available during the Note 4 release date. In the UK and Canada, the Galaxy Note Edge is expected to arrive in the initial days of the coming year. Rumors have it that the Note Edge will be available for purchase in the US within this year and other countries will get it in 2015.
