Seoul Virus Outbreak Caused By Pet Rats

The Seoul virus outbreak was caused by two ratteries in Illinois.

The CDC confirmed Friday that pet rats were the source of the Seoul virus outbreak in Wisconsin and Illinois. Based on the agency’s report, eight human cases of infection have been reported so far.

Dr. Jennifer McQuiston, the CDC deputy division director for high consequent pathogens and a veterinarian, says that this is the first time in the U.S. history when humans get infected with the Seoul virus in pet rats.

Previous outbreaks occurred, but all of them were caused by wild rats. McQuiston adds that a similar outbreak linked to pet rats occurred in Europe a few years ago. The first patient who contracted the virus was a Wisconsin resident, who reported having flu-like symptoms.

When his doctor learned about the man’s exposure to small rodents, he decided to check if the patient might have been infected with hantavirus. The sample tested positive for the rat virus, so the public health specialists in Wisconsin sent them to the CDC.

Plus, they also sent a second sample from a family member who was a home-based rodent breeder too. On the 11th of January, the CDC officials confirmed the two cases of Seoul virus infections in both men.

McQuiston explains that the Seoul virus is unusual in the United States. The infection usually triggers mild symptoms similar to the flu, but in the worst-case scenario, it can lead to severe complications, including renal disease.

More precisely, the patients can experience abdominal pain, headache, fever, nausea, chills, rashes, and eye infection. It is worth mentioning that in the rarest cases, this simple infection might lead to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a potentially deadly disease which causes severe aches, fever, and fatigue.

In some patients, the disease might be asymptomatic. The symptoms generally appear within seven to 14 days after the patient contracts the Seoul virus, but in some cases, the symptoms appear after eight weeks.

The investigators discovered that two ratteries in Illinois were responsible for six other cases of human infection. However, only one of the patients experienced the symptoms. Fortunately, the Seoul virus cannot be transmitted from one person to another, so the authorities believe that they will successfully contain the outbreak as soon as possible.

People can contract the Seoul virus if they come in contact with urine, saliva, blood, and other infectious fluids from sick rats.

Google Acquires Fabric Developer Platform from Twitter

Google has acquired Twitter’s Fabric developer platform.

Twitter is looking to get in a better financial situation and for this purpose, it has started to sell some of its non-essential division to other companies. The most recent transaction involves Google who has purchased not only the Fabric developer platform but some of their mobile app tools as well.

After the acquisition of Twitter, last year fell through, the company now has to become profitable on its own. For this purpose, it’s looking to streamline its services and focus on aspects that actually produce revenue. For example, Twitter decided to shut down Vine, the somewhat popular 6-seconds video platform and relaunching as Vine Camera, without the ability to hosts video as it can get quite expensive.

Besides the notable Fabric transaction, Twitter also managed to sell its Answers mobile app analytics, Crashlytics, reporting feature, Fastlane development automation system, and Digits SMS login system. The Fabric developer platform was initially launched in 2014 as modular SKD which allowed devs to choose different options on how to improve the apps. Now, the platform is used for apps with a total of almost 2.5 billion users built by 580,000 developers around the world.

The news of regarding the transaction involving Google was made public by the Fabric on a blog post and was confirmed on Twitter by Jeff Seibert, a senior direct of the product. The post states that the acquisition by Google will lead to a new chapter in the life of the Fabric developer platform. It reveals that the entire team will be joining Google’s own Developer Products Group, working directly with its Firebase team. This make sense since both divisions have the similar goal of helping developers create better apps.

The acquisition by Google was ideal for Twitter, as the company seeks to sell off many of its divisions without upsetting the people which depend on them by shutting them down. The specific terms of the deal were not revealed.

Despite the current and future changes implemented by Twitter, the company is still looking to invest in public APIs, while continuing to retire and sell other divisions like the commerce one. Nonetheless, it will continue to allow users to make donations to various charities.

Microsoft Acquires Maluuba AI Startup

Microsoft has completed acquisition of Maluuba, an AI startup.

A great way for a tech giant to quickly improve their research and development capabilities in a certain field of artificial intelligence is to acquire smaller companies who already have a cohesive team of specialists. This is the case with Microsoft’s latest acquisition of Maluuba, an AI startup.

Maluuba is Canadian company based in Montreal and was founded by graduates from the University of Waterloo like Sam Pasupalak and Kaheer Suleman. The Ai startup focused its efforts natural language processing as a way to develop the overall capabilities of artificial intelligence and eventually build computers capable of thinking like people.

More specifically, Maluuba used deep learning and reinforcement learning algorithms to increase the effectiveness and proficiency of AI system which can answer various questions and even make their own decisions. Microsoft has already completed the acquisition process of the company as it hopes to help them with making AI system increasingly accessible and more useful to the public.

Thanks to the focus on natural language processing of the AI startup, Microsoft can improve the capacity of their computer systems to understand what they are reading, as well as comprehend the natural dialog between people. The system can gradually become better at several tasks like common sense reasoning, memory, finding the information which they lack, and more.

Maluuba issued a statement regarding the Microsoft acquisition, emphasizing the importance of AI systems and the daunting task of improving them. As such, it recognized that they are able to make progress only by tapping into the large resources of a partner such as Microsoft. Furthermore, the announcement regarding the acquisition, both companies recognized that their goals align and their resources would be best served if they work together, with Microsoft providing necessary funding as well as access to a large user base, adequate infrastructure, and support.

Maluuba was able to impress industry experts with the reveal of a virtual assistant capable of handling a wide range of domains, as it was able to overcome some of other similar systems from companies like Facebook and Google. This broader domain focus can lead to a new breakthrough in AI research, more so than focusing on narrow domains.

Scientists Develop Cheap Paper Centrifuge from a Whirligig Toy

Researchers have developed a cheap paper centrifuge from an ancient toy.

Centrifuges are an essential tool for doctors, labs and research centers across the world. However, despite their many benefits, they are quite expensive, quite large and require electricity to function. Such requirement cannot be met in poorly developed regions where doctors need them the most.

However, the future of centrifuges is looking a lot better thanks to the amazing invention of a team of researchers from Stanford University.  Taking direct inspiration from a whirligig toy for children, the researchers were able to create a paper centrifuge which can be spun by hand without any need for electricity, a precious commodity in undeveloped regions.

Furthermore, the device is also extremely cheap, costing only 27 cents to make, and provides results quite fast compared to a normal centrifuge, as it is able to detect diseases like malaria in blood in only 15 minutes.

Researchers across the world recognize the importance of centrifuges and a bid to overcome its limitations, they tried to develop simple and less expensive devices from kitchen instruments like egg beaters or salad spinners. However, none were successful as they did not reach the required speeds specific to an advanced centrifuge.

The new paper centrifuge developed by Manu Prakash and his colleagues from Stanford was detailed in a paper published in the journal Nature Biomedical Engineering. They were able to recreate the capabilities of a modern centrifuge by using paper and wire while being lightweight, low-cost, and human-powered.

The scientists decided to name their paper centrifuge invention the “paperfuge”, which is able to reach an astonishing speed of 125,00 revolutions per minute. It can exert centrifugal forces of around 30,000g. This allows its users to separate white and red cells in a blood sample introduced into its paper core in only a few minutes of usage.

The paperfuge is the fastest non-electrical centrifuge ever developed, being 100 times faster than any previous inventions and it’s considered to have the highest rotational speed for a human-powered device. The inspiration for the device comes from an ancient toy known as the whirligig, dating back to 3.300 BC. It works by pulling the strings which pass through the center of the paper disk which can hold different medical samples. Pulling on the handles connected to the strings unwinds them making the disc rotate at high speeds.

Researchers Develop New Porous Graphene Material

Researchers new strong and lightweight material using porous graphene.

Graphene has been hailed has one of the most incredible materials to be ever invented. However, researchers initially had trouble finding practical applications for it. Thanks to increasing amount of research programs around the world, scientists are able to discover incredible ways to use this amazing material.

The newest application comes for MIT researchers which developed a material using porous graphene. This allows it be 10 times as strong as steel but only having five percent of its density, which means that it is incredibly light.

The researchers detailed their invention in a new study published in the journal Science Advances.  It reveals how Markus Buehler and his colleagues were able to fuse and compress the graphene flakes in order to create a new material while addressing some of the weakness of the material at the same time.

Graphene was known for its strength ever since its discovery. However, when the material is formed into a 3D shape it loses some of the strength it had when it was in a simple 2D form. Fortunately, the researchers were able to address the problem by changing not its composition but its structure. When the graphene is formed into a unusual geometric pattern which can resemble a sponge of some sorts.

For their study, the MIT researchers looked at the individual atoms of the graphene’s structure. After an extensive observation and analysis, they were able to create a mathematical framework which matches the predicted results of experiments involving the porous graphene.

Building on this framework, the researchers use heat and pressure to compress the various graphene flakes. This resulted in a stable and strong structure which has a similar form to certain corals and diatoms. The porous graphene has large ration between its area and volume.

According to the researchers, despite the fact the graphene is just an atom thick, the new geometrical structure maintains its strength without adding to its heft. As such, the porous graphene material can be used in the construction industry by creating strong and light materials.

Additionally, the as the newly discovered form also includes air spaces within it means that it can also be used as part of filtration system or to improve insulation properties.

Stomach Tissue Was Grown In A Laboratory

Scientists reported that they have managed to grow in a petri dish active human stomach tissue by using stem cells.

Scientists reported that they have managed to grow in a petri dish active human stomach tissue by using pluripotent stem cells.

Stem cells are some of the most interesting features of the human body. These undifferentiated human cells can divide and differentiate into more such cells. In adults, they act as a sort of repair system. By division, they can replenish and rejuvenate tissue.

Now, scientists have managed to influence the cell’s differentiation process. This led to the development of pluripotent stem cells. These are now used in new, innovative procedures.

One such process led to the creation of functional human stomach tissue. This latter was developed in a laboratory’s petri dish.

The achievement belongs to a Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center team of researchers. Jim Wells was the principal investigator. He is a Ph.D. and Cincinnati Children’s Pluripotent Stem Cell Facility Director. Study results and details were released earlier this week.

They were published in the Nature journal. Released on January 04, the study was titled as follows. “Wnt/β-catenin promotes gastric fundus specification in mice and humans”.

The study managed to grow tissue from a specific area. This is the corpus/fundus part of the stomach. Their human stomach tissue was seen to work normally.

It was able to produce digestive enzymes. Acid was also produced by the said tissue.

This Cincinnati Children research team is behind another similar breakthrough. Another achievement in the area came some two years ago. At the time, they managed to generate an antrum.

An antrum is the stomach region which produces hormones. Now, the team will be joining their research results.

The recent discovery has opened up a new path. Both the antrum and stomach tissue can now be grown. As such, new research can be carried out.

Based on these finds, research can now better study stomach diseases. This could lead to the emergence of new treatments. It could also enrich our knowledge of the human development process.

Wells, the aforementioned lead, went to offer details. He pointed out his team’s current abilities. Researchers can grow both the corpus/fundic and antral tissues. More exactly, they can develop gastric human mini-organs.

These will open further study possibilities. For example, research could analyze their physiological interactions. Human stomach tissue responses to different infections or injuries can also be studied. The effect of pharmacological treatments on the gastric tissues would also be studied.

This latest find caps about 6 years of discoveries. The first was achieved back in 2010. Since then, the team has been using hPSC so as to engineer intestines and stomach regions. hPSCs are the aforementioned pluripotent stem cells.

Researchers have used the generated stomach tissue in specific studies. They have used them so as to identify the potential causes of disease. Treatment methods for said issues were also advanced. The diseases analyzed affect the human gastrointestinal tract.

Now, research will set to analyzed the abilities of the human-engineered stomach tissue organoids. More exactly, they will combine them with intestinal organoids. Through this, they will study how the body controls digestion and nutrient uptakes. Various medical conditions affecting said organs will also be analyzed.

In order to create the stomach tissue, the researchers analyzed mice. They noted their stomach’s embryonic development. As such, they stumbled upon a fundamental genetic pathway.

This pathway was later manipulated in a petri dish. Through it, the scientists managed to trigger a human fundus organoids formation process.

According to Wells, the gastric-fundus stomach tissue formation took around six weeks.

Busy Roads Could Potentially Be A Dementia Risk Factor

A new study has determined that living next to busy roads could potentially account as an added dementia risk factor.

A new study has determined that living next to busy roads could potentially account as an added risk factor for the appearance of dementia.

The world is moving at an increasingly faster pace. As such, the traffic is higher and the roads are busier as everyone is trying to get somewhere. But living next to busy roads may have an unexpected, long-term effect.

A new study went to determine the effects of living in such areas. Research was carried out by a team of Canadian researchers. They were led by Hing Chen. The latter is part of the Public Health Ontario.

Research results were released earlier this week. The study was published in The Lancet journal. It was released on January 04 and titled as follows. “Living near major roads and the incidence of dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis: a population-based cohort study.”

Data for the study surveyed 6.6 million adults. These were all Ontario, Canada residents. The analyzed adults were aged in between 20 to 85 years old. All of them have been living for five or more years in the province.

Researchers analyzed their health records. This led to the following results. According to them, people living next to busy roads are more likely to develop dementia.

More exactly, those living within 50 meters of such roads. They were noted to present a 7 percent increased risk of dementia.

Their results were compared to other residents. These live farther away from busy roads and heavy traffic. To be more exact, they are situated 300 meters away from such areas.

When studying the records, the scientists analyzed certain factors. They calculated the likelihood of developing certain diseases. These included the aforementioned dementia. Multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s diseases were also on the list.

However, only dementia revealed an increased incidence risk. No links have been found leading to the other two issues.

Further analyses also revealed the following facts. Distancing from the busy roads reduced the dementia risk. By 100 – 200 meters away, it had already fallen to merely 2 percent.

Living for a longer period of time near such areas also had an effect. As such, the length of time is also a potential factor. It was determined that people that have lived their whole lives within 50 meters of busy roads were more exposed. They had a 12 to 14 percent increased risk of dementia.

The exact reasons behind the increased dementia risks are as yet unknown. However, pollutants are considered as being a potential factor.

Current studies identified the road to dementia increased risks. Still, it did not identify its exact and direct causes. More factors are believed to have contributed to the rise.

The aforementioned study lead pointed out some facts. Diseases such as dementia are increasingly more common. However, as Chen stated, there is still much to learn about them. Their exact causes have yet to be determined. Specific prevention methods are still being established.

Chen declared that the current study could have introduced a new potential factor. Busy roads could be considered environmental stressors. As such, they could also influence the dementia incidence levels.

More research one the matter would be needed. It could help determine or demonstrate the new, potential disease. factor.

BlackBerry has been a dwindling force in the smartphone market in the last few years, but that hasn’t stopped them from developing one last phone named BlackBerry Mercury which is set to be officially unveiled at CES 2017. However, a number of leaks already revealed the design and some of the specs of the company’s latest phone.

Whether it will impress or disappoint, the BlackBerry Mercury, as the phone has been codenamed during its development, it will go down in the history of the industry, as another manufacturer decides to retire its hardware business to focus more on the side of software.

BlackBerry is mostly known for their smartphones featuring the classic QWERTY keyboards, and for their last device, they decided to stick with this design, although it proved extremely unpopular in the smartphone age. Nonetheless, in addition to previous leaks, the most recent one shows the BlackBerry Mercury, whose official commercial name is still unknown, running on Android Nougat 7.0.

The phone will also feature a fingerprint scanner integrated into the spacebar coupled with other identity verification methods due to its various mobile payment software, which is expected to be available on the BlackBerry Mercury. According to the new leak, the phone will be available in the US and it will support Verizon’s CDMA network.

In terms of specs, which are uncertain if they are final or not, the BlackBerry Mercury features a 4.5-inch screen with 1920 x 1080 resolution, powered by a 3400mAh battery. It will include 3GB of RAM, only 32 GB of storage capacity as well as an 18-mp rear camera and an 8-mp front-facing sensor. A lot of uncertainty surrounds its CPU, which many expect to be either a Snapdragon 625 or 821.

The BlackBerry Mercury will be the last phone under the company’s brand as they have licensed their hardware to TCL Communication Technology Holdings based in China. As such, the company has become the fourth-largest phone manufacturer in North America.

Although leaks can be unreliable, and those excited for the new handset should take any information with a grain of salt, the official reveal of the phone is right around the corner, on January 5th.

Similar to all other Apple products, a brand-new Apple Watch is more expensive than other similar products from its competitors. However, you can now save some money by purchasing a certified refurbished Apple Watch Series 1 or Series 2 online or from select retailers.

Although the prices for refurbished Apple Watches start at around $229, they can go up quite fast depending on the model, band and other features you might want, up to $509. Nonetheless, it seems that customers interested in refurbished Apple Watches no matter its price can still save at least 15 percent over the brand-new version.

This marks the first time that Apple has started selling refurbished Apple Watches since they first launched back in early 2015. The refurbished section on Apple’s website includes both the Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2 with various configurations and prices. However, no original Apple Watch models are included.

The shop includes both the aluminum and stainless steel versions of the Apple Watch, in either 38 or 42 mm size options, which also include sport bands with a wide variety of colors. The aluminum Apple Watch Models start at $229 for the 38mm model, which is $40 cheaper than a new one. The 38mm stainless steel version starts at $469, with $80 off.

If you’re looking to purchase a refurbished Apple Watch, it’s important to know that the stock varies on daily basis depending on what models Apple has on hand. Nonetheless, supplies of select models are known to not last long but the refurbished stock is replenished on a regular basis.

You should also know that all refurbished Apple Watches sold on the company’s website include magnetic charging cables, as well as a one-year warranty, in a similar fashion to a new product. However, only Series 2 models come with a power adapter, unlike the Series 1.

Google Home Adds Support for More Services

Google Home has received its largest update yet with more than 30 new actions.

The competition between Amazon’s and Google’s personal home assistant mainly consists in the number of actions and skills each device supports. Besides their design, the number of actions and services each device supports are the main difference between them. As such, both companies are gradually adding more actions to appeal to more customers.

Amazon’s Alexa assistant found in Echo or Dot devices recently received an update with a large number of skills. However, Google Home is not going to be left behind as the company just announced that they have added over 30 news actions for different services and companies.  Google Home actions are similar in function to Alexa’s skills, it gives a user control and ways to interact with the assistant.

The newest update for Google Home is the largest release of actions yet, since its release in October. The Google Assistant platform used to command the device only launched last week and it initially had only three third-party conversation action. However, thanks to a new update that number has jumped to 35.

Jason Douglas, the Google Assistant product lead stated that the conversation actions from Google Home early access partners will gradually be released in the coming weeks for all users starting today. The update consists in a variety of actions, from Domino’s Pizza to WebMD, and many more in hopes to have something for every Google Home users.

There are even actions which will allow the Google assistant to recommend cocktails, movies, and tv shows as well as books. Regarding games, you can play trivia with SongPop, 20 questions with Akinator, and other various games like Genie and Sub War. Finally, Google Home supports a number of news related actions from companies like NPR, NBC, HuffPost, CNBC, and Wall Street Journal.

If you enjoy the Google Assistant, then you should know that it can also be found in Google’s messaging app Allo. The company has also announced a new partnership with Mercedes-Benz which will result in the automaker installing the Google Assistant in their cars. The first official preview of a car with this feature will take place at the Consumers Electronic Show in 2017.
