FBI Uncovers New Emails in Hillary Clinton Server Case

October 28, 2016 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

hillary clinton server case - new emails surface

FBI reopens investigation in Hillary Clinton server case after new “pertinent” material surfaces.

In an unexpected twist to the U.S. presidential campaign the FBI uncovered potentially significant material in the Hillary Clinton server case.

New emails sent through Hillary Clinton’s private server surfaced after the Federal Bureau of Investigation seized devices belonging to Huma Abedin and her husband, Anthony Weiner in an unrelated case.  The shocking revelation was announced through a letter sent to Congress members.

“In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation.”

The initial investigation into Hillary Clinton’s unauthorized use of a private email server concluded in July with a recommendation of no criminal charges against the Democratic presidential candidate. However, in light of recent events, the FBI has decided to take investigative steps to determine if the newly discovered emails contain any classified information.

“Although the FBI cannot yet assess whether or not this material may be significant and I cannot predict how long it will take to complete this additional work, I believe it is important to update your Committees about our efforts in light of my previous testimony.” declared James Comey, FBI’s director, who previously criticized Hillary Clinton as being careless.

With less than 11 days before the US presidential election, the FBI’s decision to reopen the investigation shows how serios the discovery is. Several lawmakers questioned the timing of the letter, seeing as there is currently no evidence that Mrs Clinton or the State Department withheld information.

“Why would FBI reopen Hillary investigation unless there is evidence of more than extreme carelessness in handling classified information?” tweeted John Cornyn, second-ranking Republican in the Senate.

A senior law enforcement official declared that Comey’s letter was sent out of extra caution. Although FBI’s director provided no details about the nature of the mails, the politically explosive development raises serious questions about the Democratic presidential candidate. The shocking revelation seems to have caught the Clinton campaign by surprise. Tim Kaine, Clinton’s VP running mate, said he has to “read a little more” about the situation before giving an official statement.

GOP nominee Donald J. Trump, realizing that the new development in the Hillary Clinton server case may represent a turning point in the race, was quick to add fuel to the fire. Despite the fact that he has repeatedly called the FBI corrupt and inept, during a campaign event in New Hampshire, he went on to praise the law enforcement agency.

“I have great respect for the fact that the FBI and the DOJ are now willing to right the horrible mistake that they made. This is a grave miscarriage of justice that the American people fully understand.” Donald J. Trump declared.

Comey, who is also a Republican, endured severe criticism in July after he decided not to charge Clinton. The language used by the FBI in the letter made it clear that agents will be going through the newly discovered emails to determine any intent to violate the law. Only time will tell how the Hillary Clinton server case will unfold.

Scientists Develop a 3D Image of the Brain’s Marijuana Receptor

October 24, 2016 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

marijuana leaves

Scientists developed a 3D model of the brain’s marijuana receptor.

In an attempt to better comprehend how pot affects our body, a team of international researchers has created a 3D atomic-level image of the marijuana receptor in our brain. They also studied how weed’s active ingredient, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)l is being activated in the brain.

When trying to understand how marijuana affects our bodies when consumed, researchers thought that creating a 3D model of the marijuana receptor would facilitate their work. However, the development process of the model presented several difficulties. Researchers struggled to create a crystal form of the marijuana receptor when it was bound to a stabilizing molecule which can block the functions of the receptor.

After some number of attempts, the scientists successfully recreated the crystal form of cannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1). After analyzing it, they observed that the complex structure of the receptor has an underlying complicated and expansive binding network consisting of many sub-pockets and channels which connect to the various parts of the receptor.

According to the study, CB1 is part of a large class of receptors known as G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR). They fulfill important roles in a high number of physiological functions. When certain external substances are bound to a GPCR, the G protein within the cell becomes active and creates a specialized cellular response. This reaction can be blocked using AM6538, the stabilizing molecule used on CB1. For this reason, scientists think that it can be a possible addiction treatment.

Researching the CB1 receptor might provide key insights on why certain THC molecules can cause complex and even adverse effects. The new 3D model of the marijuana receptor will help future research with the better understanding of the effects and drugs. It may even impact the creation of drugs from pain, obesity, inflammation, and more.

The study was led by several prominent researchers such as Zhi-Jie Liu, Laura Bohn, Raymond C. Stevens, and Alexandros Makryannis alongside other scientists. Their work was published in the journal Cell and attracted funding from several institutions like the GPCR Consortium, National Nature Science Foundation of China, the Shanghai Municipal Government, and more.

With marijuana gradually becoming a mainstream recreational drug, researchers, drug companies, and governments want to have a better understanding of how the drug affects people. For this reason, a high number of studies attempting to unravel its effects have been started.

Google Will Release Click-To-Message Ads

October 19, 2016 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Google search webpage

Google will globally release the new click-to-message ads feature in the coming weeks

Google previously announced click-to-message ads earlier this year. After an extensive testing period of several months, the company has finally decided to roll out the feature in the coming weeks. It will allow users to send texts to companies that advertise on Google.

After a few months when users could try out the click-to-message ads feature in beta, Google is finally starting to officially release it. The feature will allow users to opt for a new way of communicating with companies and business whose ads are displayed during a Google search.

If you search for specific business or company, or even when ad on top your search results page catches your interest, Google will display several ways you can get in contact with them. One way Google suggested communicating with the respective business is by displaying their phone number. If you clicked the call extension on your phone, then the number will be formed automatically.

With the new click-to-message ads, Google wants to keep their service in touch with people’s preference. According to one of their surveys, around 65 percent of consumers prefer sending a text message rather than calling. In order to satisfy this preference, Google has decided to also add an SMS extension to the ads. With the full release of the feature in the coming weeks, you will also see messaging icon below the phone number. When you click the icon, your messaging app will be launched automatically.

Companies and business that want to make use of the new click-to-message ads feature are required to use Google’s AdWords. After it is installed, all they have to do is enter some additional information in order for the SMS icon to be displayed and users to start texting. Advertisers can also set up their specific text message that is pre-loaded in the messaging app after a user has clicked the SMS icon. They also have flexibility in deciding when the new feature will be displayed with scheduling options.

The new click-to-message ads also offer more flexibility to users who’d rather just text when engaging with a company rather than call them. Although, you won’t get an instant response as from a call, messages allow for better organization and you’ll not be put on hold.

Leaked HTC Bolt Reveals Specs and Features

HTC Bolt

HTC Bolt leak reveals design, specs and features.

HTC Bolt has just been leaked with details about its specs and features. One of the most noteworthy things about it is that it won’t include a headphone jack, just as Apple’s iPhone 7.

The HTC bolt has rumored to be in development for a time now. The leaked images show the physical device in the wild and not as a rendered image. The HTC Bolt has a similar design to the HTC 10 phone, which is the company flagship device. It has a metal design that makes it look great, more solid and safe while appearing like a premium device although according to its specs it is a midrange phone.

The HTC Bolt leak reveals that the company is trying to emulate Apple by not including a headphone jack. Many iPhone users were not pleased with the decision but it remains to be seen if HTC can convince their fans that the phone is worth it. The leaked images and details come from VentureBeat’s Evan Blass. Besides the design of the phone, he has also revealed some of its specs.

The HTC Bolt features a 5.5-inch FHD display, which is larger than the HTC 10. It comes with 3 GB of RAM, 64GB of standard storage capacity which can also be expanded thanks to its microSD card slot. HTC Bolt’s main camera has 18 MP which is superior to HTC 10’s 12 MP.

A previous leak showed that the HTC Bolt will have Android 7.0 Nougat installed right out of the box. As with all HTC devices, the phone will have HTC Sense on top of the basic Android OS. This information has been reinforced by the new leak as well. Many see the HTC Bolt as successor to the 2011 Thunderbolt which was released as a Verizon exclusive. Thus, there are expectations it will continue the trend of being exclusive, although this time to Sprint.

The phone will also be launched in all global markets, as HTC is trying to recover some of the market shares it lost. Samsung’s failure is HTC’s opportunity and the Bolt is capable enough to fill in the gap. However, its success depends on how customers will react to the controversial decision to remove the jack.

What do you think about the HTC Bolt?

iPhone 7 Plus’s Bokeh Effect Gains Popularity

October 2, 2016 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

The Bokeh Effect will make your pictures look more professional.

Apple’s latest IPhone 7 has many surprising features.

Although the iPhone 7 Plus is on the market for some time now, its functions still manage to surprise the consumer. Hyper image sharpening, or, the bokeh effect, is Apple’s new concoction in the area of portrait photography.

The bokeh effect lets the user take advantage of the phone’s dual camera lens system, in order to take stunning and breathtaking pictures. According to Apple’s representative, the new bokeh effect will become available with iOS’s 10.1 version, which is scheduled to launch somewhere in late October.

However, if you are eager to test this new function and simply cannot wait until October, you can enroll in Apple’s Beta Software Program. As part of his tour, you will be able to download the latest iOS 10.1 update and to test out the amazing bokeh effect.

According to the new phone’s specifications, the Seven Plus model used a 12 Megapixel wide-angle lens and a 12 Megapixel Telephoto lens. While the conventional wide-angle lens lets you take stunning panorama mode picture, the telephone lens will allow the software distinguish between what is located in the background and what is in the foreground.

In addition, the bokeh effect will blur out the background details in order to capture a sharper portrait. Usually, this type of effect can be achieved with pricier DSLR cameras. But with Apple’s latest update, you will be able to enjoy the same features offered by a professional camera.

Although we a couple of more week to wait until we can officially test out Apple’s ingenious camera system, it would seem that things have begun to shape up for the IPhone Seven Plus. Since it was launched, users have kept complaining about the missing 3.5 mm headphone jack.

But, as the manufacturer has decided to prove, the newest addition to the IPhone family has many amazing features that can turn this minus into a big plus.

Again, to access the bokeh effect, you will need the 10.1 of iOS. To get the latest version of this OS, you will need to enroll in Apple’s Beta Testing Program. Enrolling in this test program is free of charge, and you will be able to discover even more features.

The bokeh effect will be especially useful for professional photographers who will want to take full advantage of the smartphone’s dual lens camera in order to create amazing, crisp and sharp portraits.

Belly Fat Could Increase Heart Disease Risk

September 29, 2016 By Roxanne Briean 1 Comment

heart disease risk is increased by abdominal fat

Having hidden belly fat could worsen heart disease risk factors.

According to a recent study, having hidden belly fat could worsen heart disease risk factors. The findings proved that people who carry excessive abdomen fat also called ‘spare tire’ have a greater disease risk than those who have fat deposits in other parts of the body.

The US National Heart Lung and Blood Institute mentioned that how much fat one person has is as important as the density of the stomach fat, specifically the hidden fat from the belly area. Normally, the lower the fat density, the higher the fat deposits.

The senior researcher of the study, Caroline Fox, and a former analyst at the U.S. National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute stated that a lower density fat and an increase in the amount of belly fat are linked to a greater disease risk factor.

1,106 adults from the Framingham Heart Study were analyzed using CT scans to examine the location, quality, and quantity of the abdominal fat. Participants were on average 45 years old, and 56 percent of them were men.

Specialists noted that the decreased fat density and increased fat located in the abdominal area were linked to a variation in the heart disease risk. Moreover, every extra pound of fat was associated with an increased hypertension, higher triglycerides, and metabolic syndrome.

Following the next six years of the monitoring period, adult participants gained on average a 45 percent visceral adipose fat also known as the fat inside the belly area and a 22 percent increase in subcutaneous adipose fat, which is fat under the skin.

However, the scientists mentioned that the study only revealed a link between cardiovascular disease and fat accumulated in the abdomen area and it does not mean that belly fat could indeed increase heart disease risk.

Today is the World Heart Day, and the World Heart Federation (WHF) is asking people to take action and transform the one in ten lives that are being taken prematurely because of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

CVD claims more than 17 million lives each year, and this makes it the leading cause of death globally. According to specialists, nearly 80 percent of premature deaths resulting from cardiovascular disease could be avoided.

WHF is asking governments and policymakers to implement reliable monitoring systems for CVD. Moreover, people could monitor their heart health by using the new Heart IQ Test to understand how ‘heart smart’ they are.

The Increase in Drug Use Among Rail Workers Leads to Accidents

September 16, 2016 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

the rates of opiate use among rail workers have increased

Because of the increase in opiate use among rail workers, regulators are now expanding the tests

The rise in opiate usage among rail workers was reported by U.S. railroad regulators who are now expanding the testing of employees accountable for driving cargo and people securely. The random drug test proved that the number of individuals who tested positive last year was 0.53 percent from 0.37 in 2014.

According to the Federal Railroad Administration, this is a concerning problem because these rates are an increase after five years of stable rates. Moreover, eight rail workers have tested positive after accidents that occurred this year. It was a 50 percent increase since last year, and it’s acknowledged as the greatest rate since the tests started in 1987.

According to the regulator, the drugs included oxycodone, marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine and morphine. The administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Sarah Feinberg, mentioned that this trend is going in an undesired direction and that it must be stopped.

The FRA decided that tens of thousands of track operators be examined for drugs, in extension to rail workers including engineers, conductors, and dispatchers that were already tested.

Because the testing is scheduled for June 2017, many of the rail workers petitioned the FRA last month, asking that they delay the implementation another year.

The Association of American Railroads announced through a spokesman that freight railroads have presented the 2017 deadline as a priority for their workers but are worried that they could be held accountable for tests including contract workers.

The association mentioned that it’s looking forward to making the roads safer by working with the FRA and starting the synthetic opioid tests. The Association of American Railroads also specified that the importance of the situation is well-known.

Although new scanning procedures do not test for opioids such as fentanyl and oxycodone, the individuals that were involved in accidents were also tested for these substances. A spokesman from FRA mentioned that they require synthetic drugs to be added to their random testing. The same representative of the agency suggested that they are currently working to find a way to include the synthetic opioids tests for rail workers.

The fame of illegal prescription heroin and drugs has progressed dramatically in recent years. Some analysts implied that attempts to decrease illegal prescriptions have supported addicts to use heroin alternately.

The Price Of Marijuana Has Decreased In Colorado

September 13, 2016 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

price decreases for legal marijuana in Colorado

The price of legal marijuana in Colorado has significantly decreased

One of the two U.S. states to legalize marijuana in 2012, Colorado, has excellent reports concerning the legalization of the drug. According to recent news, the sale of both recreational and medical marijuana has increased the state’s earnings by $1 billion of which $135 million consisted in licensing revenue and taxes.

Officials mentioned that most of the additional revenue would be allocated to drug abuse plans, law enforcement, and Colorado schools.

Colorado marijuana consumers will be pleased to find out that legal cannabis prices are now similar to the ones on the black market. The prices decreased from $2,600 per pound in 2015 to $1,600 today. The significant drop has made cannabis more accessible to average customers. Moreover, as consumers will buy the drug legally, this could be translated into more income for the state’s government.

The most simple reason for this decrease could be to enhance the conflict among modest licensed marijuana dispensaries which are appearing to expand in number. However, big businesses do not seem to be in sight of this decrease as the U.S. administration recently chose not to reclassify the drug. It is still an illegal substance or a Schedule 1.

Although the approval of the legalization of marijuana took place at the ballot box, municipalities throughout Colorado were less excited to adopt legal marijuana. Amendment 64 allowed private districts to determine whether to let the marijuana business take root.

168  of the  271 municipalities in Colorado have prohibited the cultivation and sale of retail cannabis. According to the Colorado Municipal League, eight more districts have moratoriums in the discussion.

The deputy manager of the Colorado Municipal League, Kevin Brommer, mentioned that his opinion is that officials established measures to prevent retail marijuana commerce because of the anxiety that it could rise in drug usage among teenagers. Moreover, officials fear that the legalization could lead to crime in neighborhoods adjacent to marijuana stores.

The state has allowed around 450 retail marijuana stores, not including producing facilities, cultivation sites, and examining locations. Denver has more than 200 such shops which could lead to saturation because of the prohibition in other states.

A spokeswoman for the city mentioned that Aurora, a Denver adjacent has implemented a moratorium in 2014 on retail stores to allow the city to create a regulatory system.

Cord Blood Transplants Linked To Improved Survival In Leukemia

September 9, 2016 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

core blood transplants improve survival in Leukemia

Cord blood transplants are linked to a greater survival rate in Leukemia than other transplants

Stem cell or bone marrow transplants are known to save the lives of leukemia sufferers but finding an ideal donor could be a difficult task for most of the patients. When this is the case, alternative methods or umbilical cord blood could provide good results.

Recently, Dr. Filippo Milano, the lead author of the new research mentioned that cord-blood transplant should not be viewed as the last resort, as it is now. He states it must not be treated only as an alternative donor source.

Milano which is also the associate member of the Clinical Research Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center believes that the cord-blood transplant could have significant outcomes.

The current treatment for leukemia replaces through transplant the patient’s bone marrow. The complicated process firstly involves finding a family member who can donate stem cells or bone marrow and whose blood needs to suit the patient’s blood. Unfortunately, the study author says that more than 70 percent of leukemia sufferers do not find a compatible family member donor. The next recommendation from doctors is to find a compatible unrelated donor who will not be entirely compatible according to the physicians.

The study recommends the transplant of cord blood from the umbilical cord or placenta of newborns. Similar to stem cell or bone marrow transplants, a cord-blood transplant can provide stem cells that generate new blood. The best thing about this method is that recipients and cord-blood donors do not have to be entirely compatible.

Specialists analyzed 582 patients suffering from leukemia. Milano highlighted that if the patient did not have a compatible stem cell or bone marrow transplant available, his other choice was either an incompatible transplant from an unrelated donor or a cord blood transplant.

The findings showed that the survival rate after a cord blood transplant was similar to the ones after compatible transplants from unrelated donors. Moreover, patients who underwent a cord-blood transplant were proved to live longer that those who experienced stem cell or bone marrow transplants from unmatched, unrelated donors.

Milano admitted that the prices for the cord blood transplant could be higher because of the amount of blood required. However, he is confident that due to new technology that will decrease the amount of blood needed, the prices will significantly drop.

Although this method seems to surpass the other transplant therapies, researchers believe that more studies are needed to confirm the benefits of cord blood transplants.

First-Trimester Ultrasound Associated To Severity Of Autism Symptoms

September 5, 2016 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Ultrasound influences autism

Ultrasound in the first trimester of pregnancy linked to the severity of autism symptoms

New research associates diagnostic ultrasound in the first trimester of pregnancy with the severity of autism symptoms in the fetus of the ones genetically liable to the condition.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disturbance characterized by weak social interaction, non-verbal and verbal communication, and limited and repetitive behavior. Parents usually notice the signs of the disease in the first two years of their child’s development.

These symptoms develop gradually, although some children with autism approach their developmental milestones at a regular pace and then regress. Although autism is extremely heritable, scientists assume that both environmental and genetic factors as determinants.

Early behavioral or speech interventions can encourage children with autism gain self-care, communication, and social skills. In 2013, autism was estimated to affect more than 21.7 million people globally. It is proved to occur four to five times more frequently in boys than girls.

Specialists from the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Research Institute analyzed data from Simon’s Simplex Collection autism genetic repository which comprises samples from 2,644 families who have a kid with ASD and the information reported there could be a connection between exposure to diagnostic ultrasound.

Sara Webb, the lead author of the study from the University of Washington, mentioned that for kids with autism who have known genetic difficulties, ultrasound could be an environmental stressor that drives them to have worst consequences. Moreover, previous investigations revealed ultrasound exposure in-utero determined mice to display autistic-like symptoms.

Sara also stated that there is no proof right now to imply that ultrasound itself is a risk for autism. Nevertheless, it does insinuate that there are pregnancies, where the fetuses are defenseless.

According to instructions from US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the diagnostic ultrasound must only be used for a medical requirement.

There has been a visible effort in understanding why there are so many children with autism and what is triggering this disease. Moreover, scientists are trying to figure out why are children suffering from autism so different from each other.

The study’s conclusions are associated to the first trimester of pregnancy; data from studying the impact of ultrasound on the third and second trimester revealed no link.
