PlayStation Now Launches on Samsung Smart TVs

June 10, 2015 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

PlayStation Now launches on select Samsung smart TVs

Sony announces that their game streaming service PlayStation Now launches  Samsung smart TVs – the service will be available on select devices for those who reside in the US, and Canada.

Even thought you won’t need a Sony console to play certain PlayStation games, you will need a DualShock 4 controller – fair bargain if you ask me.

The company announced last December that non-Sony devices will be able to support PlayStation Now, and that Samsung was their prime candidate – it makes them the first foreigners that support PlayStation Now.

At the current moment, PlayStation Now offers for streaming over 100 PS3 titles. At launch, the game streaming service featured the possibility of players renting certain games from their vast library, but now, gamers can acquire a monthly subscription for $19.99. Think of PlayStation Now as Netflix, but for games.

“Currently there are over 350 PS3 games available for individual rental and over 100 PS3 games available inside the subscription catalog. Games span a variety of genres, from action to RPG and everything in-between, offering something for everyone.” Sony said.

Uncharted 2 is available on PlayStation Now

Uncharted 2 is available to rent on PlayStation Now!

The catch is, if you wish to rent a specific game, you’ll need to cough up $1 a day for those games that aren’t listed in the initial bargain – you can rent them up to 90 days.

OnLive was a pioneer in the industry, and the sole challenger, but they were acquired by Sony earlier this year – rumours have it, that Sony wanted their patents. Read our very own article if you want to know more about Sony’s acquisition.

Samsung TV’s will support standard features like trophies, online multiplayer, and of course, one key piece of the puzzle, cloud-based game saves.

PlayStation Now made its début on Sony’s PS4, and in May it was made available for the PS3 also. If you don’t own a Samsung, or a Sony smart TV, you can use the game streaming services if you own a Vita, a PlayStation TV, or select Sony Blu-Ray players.

Bioshock Infinite is available on PlayStation Now

At the current moment it is unknown if Sony will add more companies to the list, or if they will form a tight alliance with Samsung.

The news has been well received by gamers, but some ask an interesting question – How about PC’s and Mac’s Sony? When will you show some love for us?

If Sony decides to move forward with their PlayStation Now service, meaning offering support for PC’s and Mac’s, they will most likely dominate the market. There is no challenger to the throne, and Sony can have its way, and that’s not such a good thing. Competition strives innovation.

NVIDIA GTX 980 Ti Will Satisfy Your 4K Gaming Needs!

June 2, 2015 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

NVIDIA just released GTX 980 Ti

Welp, NVIDIA released their GTX 980 Ti, and they praise themselves to have built a graphic card that will suit your 4K gaming needs.

This comes like such a great news for me – I just bought last year’s model for about $550, and now the price dropped to $500 <insert angry face here>.

But let’s not talk about my anger issues. NVIDIA’s new GTX 980 Ti will cost about $650, and it’s a much improved graphic card – first off, it has about 6GB of RAM, and it will run on NVIDIA’s new GM200 GPU.

The GM200 GPU is at the center of their Titan X card series – you know, the ones that cost about $1000?! It’s absurdly expensive, and only if you’re into rendering video you should buy it. In my opinion, it’s overkill for the average user.

GTX 980 Ti

The new GTX 980 Ti will feature the new 2,816 parallel processing CUDA cores with 176 texture units – that’s about %40 more than what its older brother sports. The company claims that it’s perfect for 4K gaming, and it can actually run GTA V at 60fps – of course, with everything set to the max.

Also, NVIDIA’s GTX 980 Ti is 50 percent faster than its predecessor when you take a look at the graphic card’s memory bandwidth – it makes sense, because it runs smoother, and better when you throw big detailed textures at it. The Titan X does the job way better, but it costs $400 more.

Even though this seems pretty great, and it really is pretty great, can’t really say that I’m keen on changing my graphic card. I just bought last year’s model, and it was a huge investment on my part. The thing is, I don’t need 4K gaming in my life, and I can enjoy every bit of The Witcher 3, or Batman Arkham Knight, as someone who buys a $650, or a $1000 graphic card.

Take a look at what 4K Gaming really is, and you decide if it’s really worth it:

But I do applaud NVIDIA for their constant advancements in technology – their $200 GTX 960, and $330 GTX 970 are top-shelf affordable graphic cards.

Gaming has become much more pleasant, and much more easier to get into. I started to game way back in the 90s, and getting a personal computer meant that my mum, and dad had to a) work till they drop , b) sell an arm and a leg, and c) eat only Ramen for six months.

I’ll stick to 1080p gaming thank you very much.

What about you dear reader? Are you planning on buying NVIDIA’s new GTX 980 Ti for 4K gaming? Or are you sick and tired of hearing 4K all around the office? Tell us in the comment section below!

Google is Making a Creepy Smart Toy for Children

May 26, 2015 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

Google Smart Toy

Sure Google, why not?! Build whatever smart toy your heart desires, but leave the children out of this.

Google filed a patent for a creepy smart toy, and it’s going to be built by their Nexus Rupin division. The Google X project that seems to take their inspiration from the Chucky movie franchise will make the smart toy fully responsive. This thing that nightmares are based on is going to respond to voice commands not only by speaking to whatever you’re asking it, but also with facial expressions and actions.

Sure, that seriously couldn’t backfire in any way, could it Google?

Well, do you know what experts say on this matter? That the smart toy will be easily hacked, and said hackers will have access to the video feed from the bear’s camera, and also to the microphone. Not only will your child’s playtime be available to any creep on the internet who knows how to hack a live feed, but the whole family can be spied on – without a problem.

Google Smart Toy - Rabbits, and Teddy Bears

In an era where everyone is afraid of the NSA spying on us, Google’s patent seriously couldn’t have been leaked at a better time. It seems to be a trend with the big G – Google Glass suffered from the same fate.

If we take a look at the patent, we notice that Google’s smart toy will sport stuffed animals mainly – rabbits, bears, puppies, and other cute creatures, that are just ready to ponce when you’re at your utmost vulnerable state. I keed, I keed.

Now, this isn’t a sure thing. We all know how Google loves to file patents for different things, and not make them a reality – remember that patent for an elevator that would transport people straight to the moon? Where’s that Google? Where is my safe trip to the Moon?

In a statement to BBC, Google has said that – “We file patent applications on a variety of ideas that our employees come up with. Some of those ideas later mature into real products or services, some don’t. Prospective product announcements should not necessarily be inferred from our patent applications.”

Google's Smart Toy Accesibility

” When those devices are aimed specifically at children, then for many this will step over the creepy line. Children should be able to play in private and shouldn’t have to fear this sort of passive invasion of their privacy. It is simply unnecessary.” The Center for Democracy and Technology has jumped straight to the Google’s neck.

Do you think Google’s idea will come to fruition? Or do you think the big G won’t produce the smart toy mainly because of the huge backlash it has received?

iOS 9 Rumours

May 22, 2015 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

iOS 9

The iOS 9 update is rumoured to be released in the first two weeks of June – it coincides with the WWDC 2015 conference in San Francisco, and we all know that Apple has its keynote in the first day. We don’t know many things for certain, and at this point we can only talk about iOS 9 rumours, but boy, aren’t they making me feel all giddy!

iOS 9 Rumours

Before reading further, keep in mind that some rumours are just pure speculation on my part, but they are based on what trends we are seeing on other competitors such as Samsung, Sony, and LG; and rumours are based on leaked information from various tech reviewers. Take everything with a pinch of salt, and enjoy the future!

iOS 9 Release Date

iOS 9

What we know for sure is that developers will be able to download the update as early as next month – it actually makes sense, because this is the pattern that we’ve seen Apple uphold for its past updates. But some unofficial sources state that Apple may be holding back on releasing the update, and in its stead we will see iOS 8.4 with its new artist-driven social network – a key part of Apple’s new music app.

If the unofficial rumours are true then soon after 8.4, iOS 9 will enter public beta, and a final version available for everyone will hit streets sometime around September. I know, it’s going to be a total disappointment if this happens, but we don’t want to experience the same ordeal as last year’s iOS 8 release – *ugh* just thinking about it makes me shiver.

We don’t want a buggy iOS 9 that will only frustrate us.

iOS 9 Compatibility

iOS 9

iOS 7 said goodbye to the iPhone 3GS almost two years ago. I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but I think that iOS 9 will say its farewell’s to iPhone 4 – possibly even iPhone 4S. Don’t kill the messenger, it’s not my fault that the iPhone 4S has an execution date.

If you think about it some more it becomes a certainty. With the iPhone 5, and iPhone 5c Apple introduced 1 GB of RAM – 512 MB more than its previous iteration.

iOS 9 Download Size

iOS 9

This is a huge problem, and we hope Apple addresses it. Rumours have it that it’s going to be small in size, and we can only hope that it’s going to be so.

You need up to 5 GB of free storage space on your device for iOS 8, please don’t tell me that I’m going to need more than that for the next update. It would mean that I have to delete all of my music and pictures – I certainly don’t want to do that.

The counter-argument here is that you can always use a cloud service to save up on space – sorry, but I don’t want to pay a dime more.

To end this phase – iOS 8.3 and 8.4 beta are setting a marvellous example. A smaller download size – under 5 GB for sure.

A New Siri

iOS 9

The new update will also come packed with a new Siri – small changes, but changes that we all need. It’s been reported that developers are hard at work trying to make it as good as the Siri found on Apple Watch.

Siri seriously needs to up its game if it wants to compete with Microsoft’s Cortana, and the really accurate Google Now.

Siri also needs to learn some manners, and shouldn’t speak unless spoken to – I’ve had some problems in the past with Siri activating all by itself when I was talking on the phone, or just talking to myself. I didn’t even said Hey, Siri, just mindless nonsense.

Integration of Beats Music

iOS 9

I can take it or leave it.

Google’s music streaming service is the best on the market. No, not Spotify, because it isn’t available everywhere. I travel quite a lot for business, and pleasure, and in certain European countries I can’t use Spotify.

Dr. Dre’s music service seems to have taken quite a leap towards world music domination, with more and more users switching to Beats. What I can say for sure is that Jay-Z’s Tidal isn’t going to pose a problem to the current providers. It’s really expensive, and it doesn’t offer a variety of songs like they promised. If I wanted to hear only commercial music, I would have listened to the radio.

Apple Maps with Public Transit – Trains, Subways, and Buses

iOS 9

It’s been a tough time since Apple Maps decided to be an independent lad leaving its partnership with Google Maps. Over the past years Apple has bought several GPS firms, and the most notable one is its recent acquisition of high-tech GPS firm Coherent Navigation. Could it be that we will able to finally use Apple Maps and get to our destinations safely, and on the correct route?

I seriously don’t want to take a detour through, I don’t know, The Grand Canyon.

Apple is also working on an augmented reality view, but let’s take one step at a time, baby steps actually. I wouldn’t bite more than I can chew.

Stability

iOS 9

It’s safe to say that this isn’t a rumour, just the logical next step – a more stable software. iOS 8 suffers from glitchy starts, buggy transitions, and that super-annoying battery drain bug.

We hope that Apple isn’t rushing anything, even though the adoption rate of Apple devices over Android ones is growing larger every month, and it would make perfect sense to release a new software as soon as possible – please be stupid this time Apple, just for me.

Interface Shortcuts

iOS 9

Whatever anyone may say, interface shortcuts are never enough, and I’m fairly sure that iOS 9 will feature new ones – simple taps, and gestures like what their new Force system can do.

iOS 8 did a pretty good job, leaving all of the bugs aside, with interactive notifications, a multitasking menu, and other shortcuts. We need, no, we demand new stuff Apple – it’s your own fault for teaching us to act like this.

Must-Have Android Apps and Games

May 18, 2015 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

Must-Have Android Apps and Games

The AFP team had a tough weekend. We brainstormed from Friday night to Monday morning, and we have rounded up the best Android apps and games.

iOS users don’t despair, because some of them are available for Apple devices too.

Without further ado I introduce you to our list:

Must-Have Android Apps

  • Meerkat

Must-Have Android App

If you’ve lived under a rock for the past year or so you should know that Meerkat is a fabulous app that lets the user stream live video directly to his Twitter followers. Periscope is the only challenger, but it lacks the stability that Meerkat  offers.

Available on iOS too.

It’s a free app.

  • Microsoft Hyperlapse

Must-Have Android App

Hyperlapse helps you create high-speed short-stories about you, your life, your friends, what you’ve seen on your daily commute – actually, about everything that you can capture with your device.

The craze is all about selfie time lapses – go figure, the selfie killer is a new selfie method.

It’s a free app.

  • Wear Fitness Personal Trainer

Must-Have Android App

If you’re looking for the best fitness app that will track your progress, and keep you on schedule look no further. The WFPT, created by Vimo Labs, is your virtual buddy that will help you get rid of those pesky extra pounds – it’s also available for Android smartwatches.

Available on iOS too.

It’s a free app.

  • Fruit Ninja Math Master

Must-Have Android App

When I was growing up I didn’t have any apps/games that would teach me how to do math. I had to learn it the hard way by going to school, and sitting there for hours until 1+1=2 got crammed up in my brain. Now, with Fruit Ninja Math Master, you’ll be a genius mathematician in no time, and hard equations like (1+1)-(2+2)x(3/5) will feel like a Summer’s breeze.

It’s intended for children between the ages of 5 to 7 and it offers help with addition, subtraction, multiplication as well as sequences and shape recognition.

It costs about $4, and if your child is constantly with his nose in his device you should probably get this app – and also teach him, or her, about the outside world, a mythical land filled with other human beings *GASP*.

Available on iOS too.

It costs about $4.

  • DeeMe

Must-Have Android App

We don’t know if people actually need another instant messaging service, but DeeMe also offers a photo editor. It encourages you to add your very own flavour in the mix – before sending a photo with DeeMe don’t forget to edit it, and get that perfect typography that yells <insert reader’s name here>!

It’s a free app.

  • Desire42

Must-Have Android App

This is an app aimed to couples. Think of it as a safe haven for those nudes you want to send to Cristopher Hall tonight. It’s like a dare that goes back and forth. You take a picture without your clothes on, and I take a picture with all of my clothes on. Wait. How does flirting work?

It’s a free app.

  • Dreamstime: Sell Your Photos

Must-Have Android App

Pair it with Desire42, and you’ll make millions sending your nudes to different stock photography services. But no, that would be horrible, and you shouldn’t pervert this really great app. As I said, you can sell snaps that you took with your phone to various stock photography services. That photo that you took of that weird tree might be worth 40$!

It’s a free app.

Must-Have Android Games

  • VoxelMaker

Must-Have Android App

It’s basically a Minecraft clone. You build stuff with colourful blocks, and cubes, and you can export whatever you made to other software – like Photoshop, Illustrator, and so on. Tremendous potential is hidden in VoxelMaker, and your creativity is needed!

It costs about $4!

  • Seabeard

Must-Have Android Game

The best copy of Animal Crossing that has been originally developed for iOS. You can explore the world, perform various intriguing tasks like those seemingly easy mini-games that are in fact the work of the devil. Play with your villagers, and help them re-build their island.

Available on iOS too.

It’s a free game!

  • Knights of Pen & Paper 2

Must-Have Android Game

Ever heard of Paradox Interactive? They are the guys and girls behind great games like Europa Universalis, and Crusader Kings – grand strategy video-games that offers the player a chance of ruling the world.

Knights of Pen & Paper 2 is a role-playing turn-based retro-style laugh-inducing mind-relaxing mobile game full of dangerous adventures, and semi-appropriate cultural jokes. Take it with a grain of salt – everything is meant to be funny, and induce a chill mode. Don’t get yourself overly infuriated by humour.

Available on iOS too.

It costs about $4!

  • Lego Star Wars: TCS

Must-Have Android Game

If you’re in love with the Star Wars universe, and are between 5 and 80 years old, you should definitely play it. At first glance you might be fooled of thinking that it’s a child’s game – well, in fact it is, but don’t let society tell you what to do! Everyone can have a ton of fun playing through 2 Lego Star Wars games that were initially available for PC, and consoles. But be warned, before buying it, you need to have at least 735 MB of free space.

Available on iOS too.

It costs about $4!

  • Marvel Future Fight

Must-Have Android Game

It’s an average brawler, but because it’s set in the Marvel Universe it makes it a must-have game for the geek inside you! It consists a ton of characters from past, present and FUTURE comic books. It’s worth giving it a shot. I, for one, absolutely love the fact that I can beat up Spider-Man with Spider-Man – I don’t like Spider-Man that much.

Available on iOS too.

It’s a free game!

  • Earn to Die 2

Must-Have Android Game

Remember the first one? Gee, I do. That’s all that I was doing on my morning subway commute. A couple of my co-workers stopped talking to me a while back because I didn’t want to conversate back with them while travelling to our headquarters.

You smash zombies, and your goal is to squash zombies, in order to save the world from the zombie apocalypse. Zombies Zombie Zombies! What’s the deal with it? It seems like the media is filled with the undead horde – no, no, I’m not talking about Madonna. I loved the trend a few years ago, but now it just feels a little bit like beating a dead horse.

Available on iOS too.

It’s a free game!

  • Grim Fandango Remastered

Must-Have Android Game

Ow, I bought this the day it went live on the store. If you’ve ever played Psychonauts, Brutal Legend, or the Monkey Island franchise you should definitely give this game a try too. I want to live in Tim Schafer’s mind for a year, then come back and write a novel about the hilarious, and scary things that I’ve experienced. Also, I think Tim Schafer might be my spirit animal.

Available on iOS too.

It costs about $10!

  • Bears vs. Art

Must-Have Android Game

Yup. You read it right. Bears vs. Art. You play a bear who goes by the name of Rory. Rory wants pointless pieces of art to be eradicated from the world. It’s a fun, and clever puzzle game. I might have thrown my phone at the wall at one moment, but if you are a well adjusted human being, you’ll not get frustrated by this sweet game.

Available on iOS too.

It’s a free game!

  • Empires vs. Allies

Must-Have Android Game

Have you ever wondered what’s it like to have the perfect army? Destruction at your finger tips? Empires vs. Allies is a discontinued Facebook game – thanks FarmVille, and Zynga. Don’t let it being shut down fool you. It’s really fun, and addictive.

Available on iOS too.

It’s a free game!

  • Mortal Kombat X

Must-Have Android Game

Need I say more? It’s Mortal Kombat X on mobile phones, and it’s frikin’ FREE! No memory leaks, no horrible lag, and no bugs – gee, thanks developers for taking your time with the mobile app. No, why would PC users be angry at you. It’s not like you shipped a game that should have stood in development a little bit longer.

Available on iOS too.

It’s a free game!

  • Goat Simulator GoatZ

Must-Have Android Game

I remember pre-ordering Goat Simulator, taking a day off from work, calling all my best friends over, and just go full goat for a day. It’s really great, and you can set up a connection with your inner animal. Unfortunately, later on that day, I found that the goat isn’t my spirit animal – searching deep inside I found an ugly Blobfish with my name on it. I swore that I would never touch Goat Simulator.

Until now.

It has zombies!

Available on iOS too.

It costs about $5!

10-Core Smartphones to Make their Début at the End of 2015

May 12, 2015 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

10-core smartphones

Yup, you’ve read the title right. 10-core smartphones are going to make their first steps at the end of 2015.

In 2013, MediaTek launched, for the first time, an octa-core mobile processor, and the guys and girls over at Qualcomm called it a gimmick – later that year a Qualcomm representative that goes by the name of Anand Chandrasekher said the exact thing when talking about Apple’s 64-bit A7 chip. Anand was fired, and Qualcomm retracted their statement.

The octa-core mobile processor that was created by MediaTek swiftly gained popularity, and Qualcomm was forced to bite down on their pride and make ones themselves.

With a clear goal in sight, MediaTek wants to be the first company to release, for commercial use, the 10-core processor in 2016. The deca-core, dubbed the Helio X20 will succeed the octa-core Helio X10 which is already powering Chinese flagship smartphones like the One M9+ and upcoming Asia only releases.

10-core smartphones

10-cores seem like an overkill at the moment, but nobody knows what requirements 2016 will come with, and one should look closely at Helio X20’s architecture. Its tri cluster of two 2.5GHz Cortex-A72 cores, four 2GHz Cortex-A53 cores and four 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 cores is basically adding two more Cortex-A72 cores to the original eight that Helio X10 sports. It’s not something revolutionary, but it’s a step in the right direction.

But can the all ten cores run simultaneously?

Finbarr Moynihan, MediaTek’s General Manager of International Corporate Sales has stated that ” I think it’s much more likely that it will be a subset of the ten cores but in different configurations, depending on the load that might be on at the same time. In theory, the scheduler can turn on all ten [cores] if necessary; of course, subject to any thermal constraints that the device may have.”

He also analogized the whole thing for everyone to easily understand what they are doing – think of it like adding an extra gear in a car, in order to improve its fuel efficiency across different terrains.

2 years before the 10-processor smartphones announcement

The Deca-Core Processor

“Adding the next-generation modem and the Carrier Aggregation feature specifically, I think, makes this platform relevant on a much more global scale for higher tier and even flagship devices.” the exec added.

We’ll be able to see 10-core smartphones in action at the end of 2015, but they won’t be available for commercial use, and probably still in their testing phase.

Haptic Glove Adds Touch to Virtual Reality Headsets

April 29, 2015 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

Virtual Reality Hands On Omni Glove

Every week we hear more and more awesome news regarding virtual reality headsets. This time, I’m going to tell you about the new haptic glove that adds touch to virtual reality headsets!

Researchers at RICE University have created a new sort of glove, a haptic glove, that uses air to inflate bladders located underneath your fingers to offer a more realistic experience – imagine that you can grab a weapon, let’s say a sword, and wield it in a virtual reality game!

“What we’ve made is a glove that uses air to inflate bladders underneath your fingers, so you can hook this up to a video game and when you reach out and grab a virtual object, it feels like you’re actually grabbing that object,” said mechanical engineering student Thor Walker.

The glove wears about 350 grams – it’s more than enough for users to not feel it bothering them.

” We had our own constraints based on testing to determine the amount of perceptible weight that could be strapped to your fingers, arms, legs and limbs — the maximum weight that is perceptible to users — and we came up with 660 grams on the forearm and much less than that on the back of the hand or on the fingers.”, mechanical engineering student Koch Kevin has stated.

Virtual Reality Touch Glove in Action

The glove is only right-handed at the moment, and being wireless it was designed specifically to be unobtrusive – it’s going to make you forget you’re even wearing a glove.

It’s a good thing that other companies are jumping on the band wagon. Oculus, HTC, Valve, Samsung and Sony are prioritizing on their headsets – offering a one of a kind audio, and visual, experience is their main goal. We’ll most likely see more gear popping up from other developers in the near future.

Virtuix, the company behind the VR treadmill, is sponsoring the whole project with the intent of making it available for commercial use, and not just a prototype discarded on a shelf somewhere at an University.

Virtuix and the haptic glove’s developers have an agreement on not sharing how it was built, and only to offer software support for those who want to create apps, and games to use with the new touch glove.

It’s gotten a cool name too – Hands On Omni Glove. Take a glimpse at the video down below, and see for yourself the magic RICE University students have unleashed upon the world.

Suunto Ambit 3 Sport Review

April 23, 2015 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

The Suunto Ambit 3 is one of the three new Suunto watches that offer GPS capabilities, a heart rate monitor and other activity tracking features. The watches from Suunto are very configurable, very powerful and can track your heart rate in the pool as well, not just on the trails. That being said, these functions do come at a price – bulkiness and cost.

Suunto Ambit 3 Sport Review

Here is our Suunto Ambit 3 Sport review.

Suunto Ambit 3 – Screen and Design

The most noticeable thing about the design of the Suunto Ambit 3 is how big it looks on the wrist. It has a size of 15.5mm and weighs 80g. This means that even when you compare it to other GPS watches out there, it’s still pretty bulky. Even on larger wrists, the GPS module will still be uncomfortable on the bones. On thinner wrists, it’s difficult to wear the watch comfortably because of its sheer size. The watch simply looks out of place on the wrist.

There are five buttons on the face of the watch – stop/start, light/lock, back/lap, next and view. Some can get pressed way too easily, even when on a soft run. This means that the lock option of the watch is very useful. There are four metal dots on the back of the watch that will snap in place the unusual USB cable. This means, however, that you will have to carry another cable that isn’t equipped with a standard plug.

The screen is a 128×128 one that takes up 29mm in diameter. However, not all of the display is being put to good use. The round design means that there is a lot of unused space on the screen. The display is recessed in the watch which means that it will get fewer knocks.

The display is pretty basic, just like on the Polar M400, but does have some useful graphs on it. It’s also bright enough for you to read out in the sunlight.

Suunto Ambit 3 Sport Review

Suunto Ambit 3 – Features

The Suunto Ambit 3 comes in three different versions. The Ambit 3 Run is the cheapest one and doesn’t have cycling power and swimming heart rate functions and won’t allow you to change the sports while you are exercising. The Ambit 3 Peak is the most powerful of the three watches and features a doubled battery life and water resistance and also an air pressure sensor for reading better barometer, temperature and altimeter.

The Ambit 3 Sport is in the middle of the other two and combines heart rate, multi-sport GPS and other sensors decently with a 24 / 7 tracking of activities. Nevertheless, the general activity tracking function is standard, to put it mildly. All the versions of the Ambit 3 and the MovesCount app and site don’t feature kick out daily steps, for example. However, this thing could be improved by a potential update.

At the moment all that you will get from these watches is a general rating, a calorie count and a chart that shows your activity compared to previous days. The Ambit 3 doesn’t track the sleep at the time, which makes sense, seeing how the watch is uncomfortable and you won’t be able to wear it while sleeping.

The good thing is that the Ambit 3 scores a lot better on sport and exercise than on general movement and sleep. All you have to do is simply press the start button, choose the type of exercise you want and you’re good to go. The exercise you choose will determine how accurate the GPS will be, and thus how fast the battery will drain. This will also determine if the heart rate will be enabled or not, how many laps you should do and whether the GPS will be turned on or not altogether.

The GPS is enabled with the help of the nub (which is rather bulky) below the watch’s face and the heart rate is analyzed wirelessly with the help of a Bluetooth smart chest band. You should consider purchasing the separate Smart Sensor from Suunto which will come very handy. The Smart Sensor is the only band that is able to monitor the heart rate under water. Bluetooth can’t function in water so the strap will store the information while you are swimming. It will then sync the gathered data to the Ambit 3 once you get out of the water. But this means that you won’t have heart rate graphs on the screen while under water.

The alternative to this would be to make use of an optical heart rate monitor. This monitor is built into the watch and until now very few high-end watches have these kinds of optical sensors. They are usually used for analyzing the resting rate because of accuracy issues.

Just like the swimming heart rate, the Ambit 3 also scores high in its way of analyzing multi-sport events and outdoor activities. Turn by turn navigation is built into the watch, even when the watch is tracking an activity, along with a digital compass.

What’s more important for multi-sport users is that you will be able to change the activity in the middle of the exercise with only a few presses of buttons. You can also pre-set the order of sports and the periods of transitions and change between them with only a simple press of a button. For a triathlon you would have to set up swim, then transition, then bike, then transition again and finally run. One button press for every change will make sure the whole event is being tracked. The watch will track open water swims and pool activities in a different matter. The Ambit 3 will make use of the accelerometer info and the length of the preset to analyze laps in the pool automatically and it will use the GPS for open water activities.

The watch also has a feature that will allow you to set intervals of workouts with alarms, so you will be able to jog as a warm up, sprint at a specific heart-rate zone for a certain distance or time or a certain pace, then recover, start again, rest and so on. At the moment this can only be done with the app, but according to Suunto, the website feature will also be up and running soon.

Along this list of features, the watch also supports Bluetooth smart sensors beyond the heart rate. This means that the Ambit 3 supports even foot pods, even though the watch already measures, analyzing the movement of the wrist, things such as bike speed and pace. But the device also supports cadence and power sensors as well.

We tested the device paired with other Bluetooth smart products, like the Adidas foot pod and the Polar heart rate belt and they all functioned properly. However, you should be aware that there have been a few complaints regarding the somewhat poor functionality of the Ambit 3 when paired with certain Bluetooth smart sensors.

You can connect the Ambit 3 to your smartphone as well for data sync, but also to be able to get notifications on the display of the watch. Even though the simple data that is available on the watch may make Apple Watch users giggle, the fact is that if you wish for a basic icon to inform you when you get an e-mail or a Twitter mention, this can be done on the watch.

Suunto Ambit 3 – App

Suunto Ambit 3 Sport Review

Like its rivals, Garmin and Pole, Suunto really needs to take a look at what Fitbit and other manufacturers are doing with their companion apps. When compared to those apps, the app by Suunto is extremely basic.

MovesCount tries to copy the desktop website MovesCount and only adds the capability to program workouts intervals. The companion app is currently available only on iOS but support for Android was promised from the 4.3 version onwards. This means that most Android users will get the chance to use the app as well.

As far as the app and the desktop version go, it will allow you to track and analyze your activities (or Moves) in great detail. Zones and training effects, heart-rate charts and maps are all available in the app as well as recovery time, VO2, calories and other esoteric information.

What the app is missing is the general information of fitness such as any goals to work towards and steps per day. There is also a general lack of over-time tracking information and encouragement to use social interactions.

You are able to see other members with the help of the app in your area, see their respective “Moves” and even join groups. But there isn’t much friendly competition or community spirit available in the app. For example, at the time there isn’t a Birmingham group and even the biggest group in London only has 13 members. The London Marathon only has a mere 15 people in the event.

There is at least an easy automatic sync to Strava and this is an option that is really simple to set up. There are multiple formats available for export such as TCX and GPX for other communities of fitness.

One thing is great about the app from Suunto, though, the fact that its watches are opened for third party developers. There are numerous apps that can be downloaded and installed on the Ambit 3. For example, there is a third party app that will display your heart rate in the form of a percentage of maximum or show you an estimated time that remains to 10k.

Suunto Ambit 3 – Setup

Operating and setting up the Suunto Ambit 3 is very easy to do. There is a very simple sign-in process on the watch, with more data that can be inputted with the help of the website or the app, to generate heart-rate zones. After you do this, you’re all set to go.

This is all you need to do, unless you want to get into more complex matters of workout intervals, display types and custom exercises. The desktop software, even though it’s not as well designed as some others, is still pretty easy to use and to set up. Pairing with other devices and belt setup is just as easy to do. Menus on the Ambit 3 are very clear and simple as well.

Suunto Ambit 3 – Performance

Because Suunto has a long heritage in heart rate monitoring and GPS, there’s no wonder that everything works just as it should do. The GPS in the Ambit 3 does take a little more time to get your location when compared to the Polar M400, but this isn’t such a big deal as the difference is only by a few seconds. The heart rate monitor is very reliable and got a fix pretty quickly.

There have been some complaints online regarding the heart rate strap moving during turns in swimming races, but I didn’t face this problem to be completely honest. The GPS is far less accurate in water, however, but this is because the GPS signals don’t work all that properly underwater. GPS won’t work at all when diving.

Suunto Ambit 3 Sport Review

All in all, the performance was quite excellent. The real problem of the Suunto Ambit 3 is its shape and size. The watch is very bulky and it really doesn’t work as a simple fitness band because you can’t forget that you are wearing it at all.

Suunto Ambit 3 – Battery Life

The Ambit 3 claims to have a 14 day basic use battery life or a 15 hour battery life when used with GPS at five second intervals. This is pretty accurate when compared to real life testing.

The Ambit 3 didn’t require to be recharged for many days when used with heavy sport activities such as three days of running, rowing and a couple of bike rides that totaled to about three hours of constant activity.

Should I buy the Suunto Ambit 3?

The answer is a definite yes if you are a multi-sport user. However, if you wish to combine a general fitness band to accurate tracking of your activities, then the answer is no.

For the latter use, you will find yourself easily annoyed by constantly wearing the Ambit 3 and this will also tire you up pretty quickly. The general activity information on the Ambit 3 is at the moment far too inaccurate as well. For this approach, you’d be better off buying the Polar M400.

The Ambit 3 could prove to be a great purchase if you’re more interested in tracking numerous sports, especially if any of those sports are water based. It has an impressive feature list and the watch performs very well, which makes it a good value.

That being said, the Polar V800 has a somewhat similar price and also features multi-sport and swimming support. The Polar V800 also works a lot better tracking general activity and the Ambit 3 pretty much fails in that department. It’s also a lot slimmer and not as obtrusive. Because of these reasons, The Polar V800 might be a better deal.

Wrapping up…

The latest Humble Bundle from EA is Shockingly Awesome

April 16, 2015 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

Origin Bundle 2

Pay what you want and help charities with Humble Bundle: Origin Bundle 2.

Since launching in 2010, Humble Bundle has managed to raise over $50 million for charity. When you buy a bundle you can choose where the money goes – to the developers, to Humble Bundle itself, or to charity. The pay what you want platform has paired, once again, with EA to offer awesome games at a shockingly awesome low price, but this time you won’t be able to choose where the money goes – it will be sent by default to charities.

That’s right, EA, the embodiment of evil, Satan on Earth, has opted out of receiving money for their games. Even more so, every Facebook page, of each game that is included in the bundle, is plastered with ads and links so users know that they can get their games cheaper. Is this a trick to make me like you EA? Because if it is, it’s working!

charities

All the money will go to these charities:

  • Girls Who Code – a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2012, and it helps young women to complete a college-level computer science education and gain skills to compete on the job market.
  • The V Foundation – that is set to make a difference by raising money for Cancer Research. They have awarded more than $115 million to more than 100 facilities nationwide, since its launch in 1994.
  • buildON – has a goal to educate and empower women that don’t have an education. Two-thirds of the world’s 785 million illiterate adults are female. It’s time for a change.

The money will go through PayPal Giving Fund, and you can learn more about it right here.

At the current moment, the average price is $4.89, but you can pay whatever you want.

If you don’t beat the average price and, for example, you pay only $1 you’ll get: Dragon Age: Origins, Peggle, Dead Space 2, Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault War Chest, and Command and Conquer: Generals, plus its expansion Zero Hours.

If you do beat the average price, then besides the standard games, you’ll also get: Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, Dragon Age 2, Bejeweled 3, Mass Effect 2.

 Game List

Each game can be redeemed on EA’s Origin, or Valve’s Steam – some will be available only on Origin. You can see which game goes were by looking under the game’s picture and hovering with your mouse on the elements displayed there.

The Humble Bundle: Origin Bundle 2 will end in 14 days and until then more games will be added in the beat the average price bracket – at no additional cost. If you bought the bundle at $5, you’ll get ulterior added games without having to pay anything.

Let’s take a look at the games offered.

2009 release

  • Dragon Age: Origins

Released in December 2009, Dragon Age Origins is set in the fictional land of Ferelden during harsh times of strife and anguish. Doom is knocking on the kingdom’s doorstep – a demonic invasion is set to conquer and destroy everything. That is unless you, the player, can stop it. It’s one of the best RPG’s to have been released in the past decade, with over 60 hours of game time for you to indulge in.

Humble Bundle

  • Peggle

Peggle is for the casual gamer. It’s a puzzle video game that challenges the player to shoot pegs, with a limited supply of bullets, in order to achieve a high-score and get to the next level.

Humble Bundle

  • Dead Space 2

The sequel to the exceptional 2008’s Dead Space, Dead Space 2 continues the story of Isaac Clarke and his torment of finding himself yet in another Necromorph outbreak. It’s a third-person survival horror shooter that isn’t for the feint hearted – I swear, I tried to play this game when I got back home from work one at night and I had to sleep with the lights on after a one hour session – It also has multiplayer!

Allied Assault

  • Medal of Honor: Allied Assault War Chest

Released in 2002, Medal of Honor is a fascinating first person shooter that tells the tale of brave soldiers that have fought in WW II, starting with D-Day. Its level’s are compared with Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan.

Generals

  • Command and Conquer: Generals, and Zero Hour

A real time strategy game released in 2003. The game takes place in the future where the world is sickened by terrorist plots. It starts with a nuclear disaster in Beijing set off by the GLA. You can play with three factions: USA, China and the Global Liberation Army.

Garden Warfare

  • Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare

Basically it’s a tower defense game, but also a multiplayer third person shooter. You take control of the zombies, or the plants, and you wreak havoc. It’s mindless fun.

Humble Bundle

  • Dragon Age 2

The sequel to 2009’s Dragon Age: Origin falls a little bit short if you compare it to its behemoth of a predecessor, but that doesn’t mean it ain’t a good play. New graphics, a new story line, and also new spells, weapons, and armor to choose from, it’s one hell of a game. You’ll need about 30 hours to finish the game, half of the first installment’s game time.

Bejeweled 3

  • Bejeweled 3

Another casual games for puzzle lovers. It’s a tile matching game, in which you need to match certain elements to achieve a high score and pass on to the next level.

Humble Bundle

  • Mass Effect 2

BioWare’s best action role playing game is about how humanity, threatened by a insectoid species known as The Collectors, fights back, and defends not only the human race, but every other living being in the galaxy. You are Commander Shepard, the toughest man alive, and your only goal is to save mankind. I highly urge you to play the first installment before taking this beast on. You’ll understand the plot, and the first one is also an incredible gem.

Where’s my credit card?! I need to buy the bundle at once! I already have a couple of these games, but I can gift the ones I already own to my friends. Time for some Command and Conquer: Generals multiplayer!

Take animated selfies with new app named Kong

April 15, 2015 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

Path App

Path, a well known social network designed specifically for photo sharing, has just released its new app named Kong. It lets the user create animated selfies. But how does it work? It’s simple. It turns your selfie into animated GIFs by just one press of a button.

You can find selfie in the Oxford English Dictionary – whether you like it or not, it’s here to stay, so why not indulge in it?

After you add text, emojis, filters you can share your creation with your friends via SMS or E-mail, but also on social networks like Twitter or Facebook – it’s shared automatically to Kong users.

With Kong, Path is attempting to build a huge on-line community based on selfies – but not just by taking random photos. Through gamification, users can follow different channels, or hash-tags like #cutecry, #MyReactionWhen, and post their own creations.

You can also follow channels that cover specific locations like #NewYork, #Dubai where users are encouraged to make gifs in those places, or referencing them.

The one thing that comes straight into mind is how everyone will spam channels with their thousands of selfies stored on their smartphones. You don’t need to worry about this, because every user has permission to post just one entry in each channel. This ensures that spammers would not have their way, and also it pumps up the game – you will try hard to create the most interesting selfie to post on Kong.

People are so in love with selfies that Path’s founder, Dave Morin, will swim in a lake filled with gold coins by the end of 2015. This idea is on the margins of early Facebook.

Dave Morin is trying to monetize the app by looking to partners with brands that would have their own channels – #Starbucks, #Nike, #Google and the likes.

You can download Kong for Android and iOS – if you have Apple’s smart watch even better, it’s also available for download on the store.
