Smite: A Beginner’s Guide

April 8, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Smite: A Beginner's Guide

The popularity of MOBA games has been constantly increasing these past few years. LoL has become a powerhouse when it comes to multiplayer gaming, with one of the biggest online communities, followed by DOTA in the second position and Smite in third.

Smite, is a free-to-play, 3D-action, multiplayer only game, developed by Hi-Rez Studios, that brings a new perspective to the MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) genre. Although, it has some similar features to Dota (Defense of the Ancients) and LoL (League of Legends), it brings a breath of fresh air to this type of gaming.

Unlike the point and click style of other MOBA games, in Smite you get to play from a third-person perspective. This adds an element of constant panic and, at the same time, the mini-map becomes your best friend. Warding is more necessary than ever before, because, without the elevated view, you can get caught out of position very easy.

In this game, there is no passive dodge skill, so you have to do it manually, with the help of “WASD”. The same thing applies when it comes to aiming, you don’t just get to right-click on your opponent in order to make  your character auto-attack. Here, you have to aim yourself, making everything, from basic-attacks to the abilities you use,  a “skill shot”.

Smite is also a very beautiful game, with bright, vivid colors and “cartoonish” graphics. It is build in the “Unreal Engine 3” and it utilizes the awesome physics engine from Havoc.

Before we get into details about roles, play-styles and gods (your hero in Smite is actually a god from a wide range of mythologies), first you must check if your PC can run the game. It is not a particularly demanding game, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Minimum System Requirements

  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz or Althon 64 X2 2.7 GHz
  • RAM: 2 GB on Win XP, 3 GB on Win 7
  • OS: Win XP SP2, Win Vista or Win 7
  • Video Card: ATI or Nvidia graphics card with 512MB video ram or better and Shader Model 3.0+ support.    (ATI Radeon 3870 or higher, Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT or higher).
  • HDD Space: 10 GB

Recommended System Requirements

  • CPU: Quad-core Intel or AMD CPU
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • OS: Win 7 or better
  • Video Card: ATI or Nvidia graphics card with 1GB video ram or better (Nvidia GeForce GTX 560+ or ATI Radeon 6950+).
  • HDD Space: 10 GB

With the technical part out of the way, let us install Smite. First, navigate you way to “www.hirezstudios.com/smite/nav/game-info/download-game” and click on the download game button. After that, open the game installer, from your downloads folder and follow the given steps.

I have played Smite since early closed alpha and I have more than 10,000 in-game hours, with over 2,000 matches played and I will try, to the best of my abilities, to give new players a complete heroes guide and a few tips.

1qn8MPl

Running Smite for the First Time

When you’ll run Smite for the first time, after you log into the game, by using your account name and password, you will see that the game wants to show you a few introduction videos. I strongly recommend that you watch them, for they will show you all of the basic steps that you need to take in order to be an efficient Smite player.

At the beginning, you will only own 5 random generated heroes from a total of 64 gods. You will also gain 4 free gods, that you will be able to use for a limited period only. With every new patch, the 4 free gods will rotate.

Currency

In Smite, there are three types of currency.

“Favor”, is the in-game currency that you get from completing games and from leveling up (once you reach level 30, the leveling up feature will no longer be available). It is used for unlocking new gods and for purchasing new god-skins. At the beginning, you might also consider spending a little “favor” on renting a hero for a match, so you can try him out, before you decide to permanently buy it.

“Gems”, are usually bought with real life money and you can use them to buy heroes (not recommended, because eventually you will own all gods by simply playing the game), or to unlock new, special god-skins and ward-skins. You can also buy voice packs, that you can use during games. Hi-Rez are hosting a lot of special events, where you can win free “gems” by completing in-game activities, so keep your eyes open for those events.

“Gold”, is the in-game currency used to buy items, potions, wards and abilities from the shop. Every player will passively gain gold in time, but killing and last-hitting minions,  will get you more. The more gold you have, the more items you can buy, the stronger your hero will be, it is as simple as that.

You also have the option to buy the “Ultimate God Pack”, that will get you all of the released gods and all of the gods that will be released in the future, for only $29,99. Also, if you have already unlocked a hero with “favor” and you decide to buy the pack, then all of the spent “favor” will be returned to you.

Roles

Smite: A Beginner's Guide

Smite, is a team game and, in order to win, everybody needs to play their selected role to the best of their abilities. Just one weak link in your team can mean defeat.

There are five hero types in this game:

Assassin: Mostly used as  junglers, they can deliver their opponents a swift death.

Warrior: Just like the name suggests, they are strong warriors, with a good defense and attack rating , great for team fights. They are mostly used as support or as solo-laners.

Guardian: They are the tanks of the game, with strong defenses and a lot of abilities meant to get the opponents out of position or to keep them out of the fight. Because of their high base defenses, combined with high hit points, they are ideal for new players.Guardians are mostly used as support characters.

Mage: In Smite, the mage can be used in, basically in any role, depending on which one you chose. Most of them are better is mid-lane or in solo-lane.

Hunter: They are the hard carries of the game, very fragile in the beginning, but can make the difference in the later stages of the match.

In Smite, there are two types of defenses and, of course, two types of attacks: magical and physical.

When you are picking your hero, you must keep an eye on what type of god your teammates have selected. If your team has, for example, only magical attacks, then the enemy team will very easily counter-build. You need to aim for a balanced team composition.

There are, also 5 roles available in a normal, “conquest” match:

maxresdefault

Mid-lane: Best for a mage, with high lane clearance. You are the heart of your team in early and mid game. You must always keep an eye on the other lanes (especially the one with your carry) and look to rotate, in order to create  superior numbers and get those important early game kills. Also, you and the jungler must coordinate, so you can clear the big neutral creep camps located on both sides of the middle lane. Try and get the attack buff whenever you can, for better lane clearance.

Jungler: Any hero type can fulfill this role, but until you get more familiar with this game I suggest that you choose an assassin or a warrior. Except for the first three minutes of the game, they will not be restricted to any lane, but, instead roam around the jungle, killing neutral creeps, collecting buffs (always get the speed buff, or if it is available, get the damage buff, but never pick up the mana buff, because, if you do that, then you’ll ruin your carry’s laneing phase) and ganging. Always look for the easy kill, but do not overdue it and try to find a balance between ganging and farming. An under-farmed jungler in the late-game, is extremely useless.

Solo-lane: The smaller lane is always reserved for the solo-lanner. Every hero type can fulfill this role, but mages and warriors are better for an inexperienced player. In my opinion, this is the most boring role, because all you do, is stay in your lane and farm up. Remember to ward your side of the jungle, so you will not get caught out of position during gangs.

It is very important for you to push your lane, because, in Smite, every minion hit by a tower, will not yield any gold for the opposition. It is better to stay in your lane and farm-up, but if your team needs you somewhere else, do not be afraid to rotate.

Support: This is a role best for guardians and warriors, but there are some mages that can be very effective too. The support will always go in the duo-lane and do everything in his power to protect his carry and help him farm. If you have o choice to make, between saving your own skin, or saving your carry, then you must understand that you are the most expandable asset in your team. You must always ward in early-game so you can be prepared, in case a gang is coming your way.

Carry: It is, by far, the most important role in the team. The carry, must be protected in early-game, but once he buys good gear, he will destroy the enemy team. You will be very fragile at the beginning of the game, so you must stay safe and avoid team fights at all cost.

Even if you have an overzealous player in your team, that tells you to help out, you must ignore him/them and continue farming, for it will pay off in the end. Kills are very important for this role, so do not hesitate to take them, even if you have to steal them. Your teammates might get upset, but the end goal is to win the game.

The Worshiper System

Hi-Rez has implemented this system, in order to make sure that you know, at least, the basics of your hero, before you jump into ranked matches.

You will get worshipers after every finished game, and depending on the matches duration and on the end result (win or lose), you will get more or less.

Once you have 50 worshipers on a specific god, then that hero will gain rank I “mastery”. The more you play with that hero, the higher his mastery will go.

At “God Mastery I”, you will be able to buy the “golden skin”, for 9500 favor, or for 200 gems. Once you reach “God Mastery V” you will be allowed to purchase the “legendary skin”, for 12,500 favor, or for 300 gems. The maximum “God Mastery ” you can get is X, and, at that point, you will be able to buy the “diamond skin”, for 15,000 favor, or for 400 gems. Once you unlock a mastery skin, it will be available for that specific god only, so keep that in mind before you make your investment.

You will not be able to play ranked matches, until you reach level 30 on your account and own at least 14 gods, with level I mastery.

Game Modes

There are six game modes in Smite:

Arena Mode

The Arena game mode, is a 5 v 5 players, brawling, death-match, where your goal is to defeat the enemy players and their minions, by reducing their team ticket count to zero.

Each side starts with 500 tickets. By killing an enemy player, you will reduce that count by 5, while killing an enemy minion will reduce it by 1. If your team manages to kill 10 enemy gods, then a powerful siege-engine will spawn and it will fight alongside you.

A portal is located at the front of each base. If you help a friendly minion reach that portal, then a ticket will be deduction from the enemy team, while helping a siege-engine reach the portal will deduct 10 tickets from your opposition.

As I said above, the first team to run out of tickets, will lose.

Conquest Mode

This is the standard map for competitive, ESports matches.

The mode features a three-lane map surrounded by a jungle area. In order to win, you will need to kill the enemy’s Titan, that is sitting comfortably in their base. In order to do that, you will first need to destroy two towers and a Phoenix, in each lane. You do not have to destroy all three Phoenixes, but the more you kill, the weaker the Titan gets.

Be careful while fighting the Titan, for it packs quite a punch.

Assault Mode

Here, you have the same objectives as you do in Conquest, but there is only a single-lane, without a jungle. Everybody will be given a random hero, that will start at level 5, with 3,000 gold. You can chose to re-roll your god for 250 favor or for  25 gems, or you can try and swap it with a teammate’s.

Remember that in “Assault” once you leave your base, you’ll not be able to return, until you die, so buy items and potions accordingly. Try and get Meditation at the start of the game, because it will help you stay in lane for a longer period, and upgrade it to Salvation later on.

Be careful and try to not over-commit. Play smart and don’t rush the Titan, unless you are 100% sure that you can bring it down. I’ve seen a lot of good “Assault” teams dominating the whole game and then, losing at the end because they were impatient.

Joust Mode

Here, small teams of three players will fight in a one-lane map. There is a jungle area, attached to both sides of the lane.

A balanced team, with a support, a mage and a carry/assassin is highly recommended here. If you are a new player, and you own Hercules, try and pick him in Joust matches. He has great HP (hit points), a lot of regen and he is deadly in small areas.

Siege Mode

This is their latest game mode. It features a 4v4, conquest-like, smaller, two-lane map, with a dense jungle in between the lanes. The objective is still the same, destroy the enemy’s Titan, but in order to do that you must acquire siege weapons.

You must kill jungle camps, players and minions, that will give you siege points and once you reach 100 points, a siege-weapon will spawn for your team.

You can get an instant siege-weapon, by killing the central jungle camp, but remember to bring friends, because this is one tough NPC (Non-Player-Character).

Match of the Day Mode

Each day you will get a different game mode, with different objectives and a large variety of maps. Not much else to say here, because you’ll never know what you will get, but trust me when I say, that in time, you will get very familiar with all of them.

If you want to be prepared, then you can go to “https://smite.gamepedia.com/Match_of_the_Day” and read about each “Match of the Day”.

Characters

All gods in Smite are different, so you might want to know a little bit about each one before you decide to spend favor or gems to buy them. The game does a great job in explaining their abilities, roles and item builds.

They all have one unique passive ability, three normal abilities and an ultimate ability. You can also purchase two abilities from the shop, but be careful, because once bought them, they cannot be sold.

I will now present you with my top 10 favorite gods

Agni

Smite: A Beginner's Guide

God of Fire

Pantheon: Hindu

Class: Mage

Attack Type: Range

Damage Type: Magical

Cost: 1,250 favor/ 200 gems

This is one of the best gods for middle lane, although he will struggle a bit at the beginning, until you reach level 5. He has a great lane clearance with his ultimate ability, called “Rain Fire”, and he’s very good in a team fight as well. You can use his third ability, called “Path of flames” to easily get in and out of combat.

Ah Muzen Cab

Smite: A Beginner's Guide

The God of Bees

Pantheon: Mayan

Class: Hunter

Attack Type: Range

Damage Type: Physical

Cost: 5,500 favor/ 200 gems

He uses bees to fight of his enemies as a physical carry. He can place bee hives (up to six), that will provide him with a movement speed buff, an attack speed buff and he will be healed for a small amount of health, if he remains in close proximity to his hives. This will help him stay in the lane for a longer period of time, but because he has no escape ability, I do not recommend you get this hero until you are more familiar with the carry role.

Anhur

Smite: A Beginner's Guide

The Slayer of Enemies

Pantheon: Egyptian

Class: Hunter

Attack Type: Range

Damage Type: Physical

Cost: 5,500 favor/ 200 gems

He is one of the strongest hitters in the game, but you do need a little bit of practice to pull off his ability combo. I recommend that you set his second ability, called “Impale” on instant-cast. He is not a hard hero, but not an easy one either.

If you get good with Anhur, then you will practically be able to play any hero in the game.

Anubis

Smite: A Beginner's Guide

God of the Dead

Pantheon: Egyptian

Class: Mage

Attack Type: Range

Damage Type: magical

Cost: 5,500 favor/ 200 gems

You need a lot of courage to play this hero. He has two channeled abilities, that will make him very vulnerable, because he is standing still. The trick is, to attack them before they attack you and take advantage of his passive life-steal.

Consider purchasing “combat blink”, so you will have a good escape method. Once you hit level 5, and you have a point in your ultimate ability, go for it. Even if you don’t get the kill, you will force you opponent out of the lane.

Another good thing to do, is to set all of your abilities, except “Grasping Hands” on instant-cast. This way you will be faster when executing a stun-third ability-ultimate combo.

Artemis

Smite: A Beginner's Guide

Goddess of Hunt

Pantheon: Greek

Class: Hunter

Attack Type: Range

Damage Type: Physical

Cost: 575 favor/ 200 gems

She is one of the first hunters that were added to the game. Has a very powerful basic attack (passive critical chance), and a great ability kit. Her ultimate ability, called “Calydonian Boar” will summon a boar that will damage and stun enemies. If you are fast enough, once an enemy has been stunned by the boar, you can quickly place a trap at his feet, that will root him in place.

Very good carry for new players.

Neith

Smite: A Beginner's Guide

The Weaver of Fate

Pantheon: Egyptian

Class: Hunter

Attack Type: Range

Damage Type: Physical

Cost: free

She is, by far, my favorite hunter. You must put her first ability, called “Spirit Arrow” on instant-cast and use it to clear the lane. Do not roam from your lane, but instead, farm as much gold as you can.

Her ultimate ability, called “World Weaver”, fires a single arrow across the map. As long as any of your teammates has vision on your target, you will be able to fire and hit them, regardless of your location on the map. Upon impact, the target will be damaged and sunned. The more you channel it (you will see a circle filling up), the more damage it will do. Use this ability to also help your team (great stun) and not just to get kills, because, at the end of the day, assists will grant you gold too.

Odin

Smite: A Beginner's Guide

The Allfather

Pantheon: Norse

Class: Warrior

Attack Type: Melee

Damage Type: Physical

Cost: 5,500 favor/200 gems

With the help of his second ability, called “Raven Shout”, he has the highest, early-game, damaging ability. Activate your shield and then use your first ability to jump into the action. This will detonate the shield, for a large amount of damage.

He is very good as a support character and also, as a solo-lanner.

Hercules

Smite: A Beginner's Guide

The Champion of Rome

Pantheon: Roman

Class: Warrior

Attack Type: Melee

Damage Type: Physical

Cost: 5,500 favor/200 gems

He is one of the most durable warriors in Smite. His third ability, called “Mitigate Wounds” will heal him for a percentage of the damage that he received.

He is best as a solo-lanner, but can also be used as a support. I strongly recommend, that this is the first warrior that you pick up.

Bastet

Smite: A Beginner's Guide

The Goddess of Cats

Pantheon: Egyptian

Class: Assassin

Attack Type: Melee

Damage Type: Physical

Cost: 5,500 favor/200 gems

She is my favorite jungler in the game. She has good damage and a great first ability, called “Pounce” that will allow her to easily jump into the fight. Press the button again and she will jump back to her initial position.

All you need to do is, jump in, use all of your abilities on the target, including your ultimate ability, and then simply press the button again and jump back.

She is a very good assassin, with a lot of damage and great escape.

Screenshots leaked for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

April 8, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Leaked screenshot

Square Enix’s futuristic action packed sequel –  Deus Ex: Mankind Divided – is currently in development for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Last night, a Russian gaming site has leaked some screenshots from the upcoming title in the Deus Ex franchise – and they look jaw-dropping awesome!

The game will take place in 2029, that is two years after the events that took place in Deus Ex: Human Revolution – but unfortunately we don’t know anything more than that, neither the release date.

Since the start of the week, Square Enix has been testing a new game on social media, and Twitch, under the name Can’t Kill Progress. Today they have announced on Twitter that Deus Ex fans should tune in tomorrow at noon (ET) at deusex.com for more info regarding the title’s future.

Twitter announcement

In October of 2013, Eidos Montreal head David Anfossi had stated that the game will – ” stretch across multiple games. Beyond the PC and console games, Deus Ex: Universe will also span across other media, including mobile games, books and graphic novels.” and that almost all of the original team is going to be working on their new project. The main theme they are going to tackle will be trans-humanism segregation.

In March of 2014, Square Enix filled a trademark for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided at the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market – Europe’s trademark and design registry, and since then no new info has been announced, or leaked regarding the games development stage.

Combining first person shooter, stealth and role-playing elements, Deus Ex is a cyber-punk themed video-game that has its roots way back in 2000. The game received critical acclaim and commercial success, and the dystopian world has won several awards – according to PC Gamer, it’s the best PC game of all time, and also by UK based gaming magazine PC Zone.

Trans-humanism segregation sounds like something you would find in an Orwellian world.

Are you eager to play the new installment in the series? Or do you think it will flop? Tell us in the comments section below.

Facebook’s Messenger App Will Add Business in the Mix

March 27, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Facebook's MessengerFacebook’s Messenger app is transforming and evolving into a tool that will be used for more than sending a funny cat emoji to friends, it’s also going to help its users get some business done.

In order to make this happen, Facebook is opening Messenger up to outside programmers, so that they can start building new features that will help Messenger be more business oriented. Messenger will also have added the ability to display store receipts and information about shipping to help its users keep track of their various interactions with businesses and merchants. This new feature will be rolled out starting with the beginning of April and it is expected to be available around the world by the end of April.

Facebook’s decision to update and upgrade its Messenger is, many believe, a means to keep up with the current trends. There is a growing number of mobile messaging applications that offer more direct and also more intimate ways to converse and connect with one’s friends.

Facebook is sensing that its young crowd is spending less time on Facebook and more time on the wide range of mobile messaging apps, such as Snapchat, Kik, Viber, Whisper, Tango, Secret and Line. These apps are taking young Facebook users away from Facebook and the social media giant feels the need to do something to fix it. Improving its Messenger is the main way to do that.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, talked about the Messenger expansion at a developers’ conference on Wednesday in San Francisco. He stated that the company has been building Messenger into a service to express more than just text. Zuckerberg promised that even more features would be rolling out in the coming months.

Facebook’s Messenger was introduced four years ago, and since then Facebook has been doing various tweaks to it, such as the ability to attach photos, video, swap stickers, make phone calls and even send money.

Messenger has more than 600 million users, it was revealed by Zuckerberg at the conference. The main reason for that is the fact that it is connected to Facebook, which has more than twice as many users, around 1.4 billion.

But there is a consequence to the popularity of mobile messaging, which translates to less time spend on social media. Less time on Facebook means fewer chances for the social media giant to learn about its users’ lives and interests and show the ads that bring in the big bucks for the company.

This threat is also what lead Facebook’s CEO to, aside from expanding Messenger, to spend a whopping $22 billion to buy WhatsApp last year. WhatsApp is a mobile messaging service with more than 700 million users; a big part of WhatsApp’s users is located in Western Europe and other less affluent countries outside the United States.

It is expected from Facebook to begin showing ads on Messenger, the moment people start spending more time on Facebook’s Messenger to do more than just chat. Obviously, Messenger is heading towards becoming a marketing vehicle, even though the mother company did not reveal its plans to turn it into one.

Eight years ago, Mark Zuckerberg made the decision to open Facebook to other programmers, and this current decision mirrors that in the entirety. Keeping in mind that the move turned Facebook into the multipurpose giant that it is today, one can only imagine what it would do for Facebook’s Messenger.

David Marcus, in charge of Facebook’s Messenger and former CEO at PayPal, hopes that Messenger becomes the multipurpose giant that Facebook is today. He concluded the company has opened the floodgates.

The social media giant is counting on apps from other developers to allow Messenger users to speak their minds with audio clips, GIFs and other dynamic formats that will make people smile and get them engaged.

During his presentation, Facebook’s CEO made a prediction that, at one point in the future, messaging apps will incorporate virtual reality technology. His prediction is largely based on Facebook’s decision to buy Oculus for $2 billion last year.

Facebook’s revenue for last year went up 58% to $12.5 billion, which allowed the company’s stock price to more than double from $38 in its initial public offering price in 2012.

American Nursing Gender Pay Gap: Male Nurses Earn More than Female Nurses, New Study Shows

March 26, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

gender pay gapA new study has revealed yet another example of the gender pay gap: it appears that male nurses earn around $5,000 more than their female counterparts.

Nursing is mostly a woman’s profession, as nine out of ten nurses in the United States are women; yet men in this profession earn higher salaries than their female counterparts. A new study has come to this conclusion and has revealed that the gender pay gap has remained constant over the last 25 years in America.

According to a new report published in the journal of the American Medical Association, JAMA, the typical gender pay gap has been around $5,000 after adjusting for education, experience, work hours, parental and marital status and clinical specialty.

Ulrike Muench, from the University of California, San Francisco and lead author of the study, said that nursing is indeed the largest female dominated profession, so naturally, one would think that if any profession could have women earning the same as men, it would be the nursing profession.

For the study, Muench and his colleagues use two data sets from the United States to examine earning over a large period of time. One data set was the American Community Survey, from 2001 and 2013, that had information gathered from around 206,000 registered nurses and the other data set was the National Sample Survey of Registered nurses, from 1988 to 2008, with information from around 88,000 nurses.

After careful examination of the data, the scientists found that every single year, each set of data showed that men earned more than women did. The gender pay gap ranged from a whopping $10,243 to $11,306 in one of the studies and from $9,163 to $9,961 in the second study.

The largest gender pay gap was experienced by nurses in the outpatient settings ($7,678), followed by hospital nurses ($3,783).

Overall, men earned more than women in all but one specialty (orthopedics), with the gender pay gap ranging from $3,792 in chronic care to $17,290 in anesthetics.

This present study provides data over enough time to reveal that the gender pay gap isn’t as random as it was thought. Muench concluded:

My hope is that this raises awareness and can start a discussion about what additional steps could be taken to achieve equal pay.

Instagram’s Layout App Takes on Photo Collages

layoutInstagram has just introduced a brand new application called Layout, designed for making and sharing photo collages.

Last year, Instagram released Hyperlapse, an app which took time lapse videos and now it has taken on the popular photo collage. Layout has user-friendly features and analysts believe it is going to be another hit for the social media giant.

Instagram’s Layout is very simple to operate. Instagram knows that its users love taking lots of photos so it made it very easy for Layout users to select the photos they want added to a collage. Layout has three tabs that will help users sort through all of their images: all, faces and recent. The all tab obviously displays all the photos on the user’s phone, the faces tab displays just the photos that have people’s faces and the recent tab is also self-explanatory. What’s cool about the app when choosing photos from the faces tab is the fact that the Layout app automatically centers the image based on where the face is located.

Once you have selected the photos you want to put into your collage, Layout automatically arranges them for you. The best part about Layout is how easy it is to tweak the collage to your taste. You can rearrange the photos in the collage by simply dragging them to the preferred position. You can resize the photos and even make last-minute replacements with the help of the replace tool. There is even a mirror tool and a flip one. The flip will rotate the photo upside down and the mirror function will make your mirror reflection of your photo.

There is also a Photo Booth function that takes a series of up to four selfies and then turns them into a collage. Users should know that the Photo Booth function only works with an iPhone’s from camera, which means that you cannot use flash. The individual photos taken by the Layout app in Photo Booth mode are saved to the camera roll.

Once you’ve finished your collage, you can share it on Facebook or Instagram. There is no Twitter integrated, but thanks to the app automatically saving the collage to your camera roll, you can share it from there.

Whether or not Layout is going to be a hit remains to be seen. Experts believe that Instagram’s backing is going to help the app get more exposure, but there are already many photo collage apps, such as Pic Stitch and PicFrame that have been around for years and have a huge number of users.

What helps Layout and will most definitely make the app stand out among a plethora of photo collage apps is its simplicity. Everything about the features of the app and the experience is simple and highly user-friendly.

While the app is free, at this moment, Instagram’s Layout is only available on iOS. The company said that it plans to release it for Android in the next few months.

Windows 10 Will Be Released This Summer In 190 Countries

March 20, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

This summer, Microsoft is planning a world wide launch of Windows 10, which will come equipped with a new biometric authentication system, that aims to be a replacement for the traditional passwords. Also,Windows 10 will be released this summer in 190 countries.

However, there hasn’t been given a specific date for the launch, the chief of Windows, Terry Myerson stated during a speech at the Windows Hardware Engineering Community summit that took place in Shenzhen China,  that the company is planning a summer release.

Windows-10-Blue-Wallpaper-3

Myerson wrote in a blog post, that Microsoft keeps on making serious progress, and they have shared with the entire world, they fact that Windows 10 will be released the upcoming summer in 190 countries and in 111 different languages.

He added that Windows has been present on a global level with over 1.5 billion users all over the world and in China there are currently hundreds of million of computers operating on Windows.

Microsoft didn’t respond right away to the request for commenting, regarding a more precise date for the release.

The company has high expectations from the new operating system and it would be the very first big chance of Microsoft to make forgotten the missteps of Windows 8. Microsoft has assured that Windows 10, which will be a free upgrade for users running Windows 7 or Windows 8, and will be run by every device, starting with desktops with huge hard drives to the low cost smart phones that have just one gigabyte to spare.

During his speech, Myerson took use of  the chance to talk about a new feature of the operating system, named Windows Hello, which stands for a new way of authentication process, that requires the face of the owner, its fingerprint or iris in order for the device to be unlocked.

This new option will be supported by a third party system, which includes Intel’s RealSense, a depth-sensing technology which is based on using  infrared cameras to detect the position and location of objects in space.

Biometric authentication, which certifies the identity of people thanks to their unique physical attributes, promises users to create an extra wall of security that would offer protection between devices and malicious exterior threats.

Even though it has been proved that using a finger print is a much more secure way that using a password, there are people who question the fact, whether hackers will find a way of breaking down their biometrics.

Myerson also added, that by the time of the release, there will also be available a version of Windows 10 oriented towards devices of small footprint Internet of Things, free of charge.

Windows 10, will make available, for other Windows versions, a diversified set of IoT devices, varying from powerful devices such ATMs and ultrasound machines, to resource uneasy devices such gateways, explained Myerson.

One other brand new feature, seems to allow users to download updates from other computers, apart from the servers of Microsoft. The latest creation of the future operating system, has been leaked on the internet the past weekend, and has revealed an option that lets you to choose if you want to download updates from the operating system of other PCs, and put them on your personal internal network, or transfer them from PCs on your network or on the web. In this manner, the updating process becomes a peer to peer capacity.

Is Hello Barbie A Threat For Children?

March 17, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

barbie

Mattel’s new “Hello Barbie” might be more than just a beautiful toy that talks to children and there are opinions asking for the doll to be removed. These reactions to the talking doll, only makes us wonder: Is Hello Barbie a threat for children?
By pressing just one button, Barbie’s integrated microphone turns on and starts recording the voice of the child that is playing with her. After that, the recordings are being uploaded to a cloud server where the voice detection technology helps Barbie make sense of the information.

What’s the result? An analytical Barbie who remembers the name of your dog and opens the subject of your favourite hobbies in your next conversation.

However, the doll which has just been presented at the 2015 American International Toy Fair, has been asked to be removed by privacy activists. The children that are using Hello Barbie, are not just talking to a doll, but they are talking directly to the toy industry which is taking advantage of this to make more money, stated the director of Campaign for Commercial-Free Childhood, Susan Linn.

The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, has started a petition against Mattel, and is worried about the fact that the toy makes children extremely vulnerable to the sneaky advertorial efforts of the mogul toy company.
In the demo presented by Mattel, the doll asks many questions that would be answered with a lot of information about a child, her family and her interests. All this information about the child, could be a great value to advertisers and could be used to be marketed immorally to children.

hello-Barbie

Even though, in 2013, Mattel’s toy sales have risen to $7.1 billion, its profits have been declining and the company is facing growing competition coming from the digital games and toys area.

To give Barbie her voice, Mattel, has made partners with ToyTalk, a startup based in San Francisco. ToyTalk has designed iPad games in which children have a conversation with digital animals, calls itself “an award winning” family and entertainment company that creates talking characters.

The CEO of ToyTalk, Oren Jacob, has insisted in saying that the toy will not use the audio recording of the child for marketing purposes and added that the information is never used for things related to marketing and publicity, or any other of these things. That is out of the question.

However, beyond the marketing purpose of a giant corporation having access to a kid’s inner thoughts, the voice recognising doll, brings many other concerns for privacy advocates, mainly because parents of the children can receive weekly emails containing audio files of the conversations the child has had with Hello Barbie.

Oren Jacob, has explained that this specific feature is created to ensure parents that they are in control of their family information all the time, Susan Linn believes that this added layer of transparency could mean trouble. According to her, children trust their toys a lot, and when they have a conversation with the dolls or the stuffed animals they are playing, they reveal a lot of information about themselves.

The voice recognition technology has become very reliable, and we have become comfortable with seeing this feature in our devices, from good humoured mobile assistant like Siri, to the new smart home gadget created by Amazon, called Amazon Echo.
But, the difference stands in the fact of an adult deliberately giving their information to a company, and a child is unconsciously playing with a data collecting doll. Another person, who has showed concerns regarding the Hello Barbie, is Golan Levin, an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University, whose study area are the new methods of interactive expression.

He admitted that, to him, this situation is creepy and that the difference between Siri and this Barbie, is that he is an adult who has given his consent about giving his information to Apple.
Mattel declared that they are “committed to safety and security”, and Hello Barbie follows the rules established by the government standards.
But with all these serious threats when it comes to online data, not everyone is convinced that is entirely true.

“They’re toy makers, not a cyber security company”.  “Why don’t they talk to Sony about cyber security vulnerabilities?”, stated Levin.

Until its launch on the market, which has been planned for this fall, people will have plenty of time to decide whether they want or not to buy Hello Barbie, which will sell for $74.99.

iPad Air 2 Was Used To Shot A Film Narrated By Martin Scorsese

February 24, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

walts-ipad-4-3

Apple devices never seize to amaze us with their abilities. iPad Air 2 was used to shot a film narrated by Martin Scorsese.

In 2010, Apple showed its first commercial for iPad, during the 81st edition of the annual Academy Awards. So returning to prove their technology in matter of tablets, has evolved it is very normal. This year, Apple is making its strongest point to show that the iPad is a powerful film making tool.

On the background of the new add, which was launched Sunday, is playing Our Hearts Like Gold, by Groenland. Martin Scorsese, the director in a voiceover, talks about creativity and how every step you take is a first step, every brush stroke is a test, every scene is a new lesson, every shot is like a school.

For the commercial, Apple collaborated with the LA County High School for the Arts, a school of performing and visual arts situate din Los Angeles. Filmmaker students were given iPads and shot their project in a weekend and the making off of the filming was shot using an iPad Air 2.

Like in most of the Apple commercials, Scorsese never talks about the Apple iPad Air, apps for movie making and the entire process of shooting who decided to film a movie with an iPad. The spot, with a length of one minute, features clips from different teams using the tablet to film and edit a diversity of scenes.

At the end of the notes, as a small text accessory, the students have used some extra hardware, which included a boom mic, dolly and a radio controlled airplane. But all the rest was completed by using the apps for the iPad from the App Store.

Things that cannot be seen but have been related, is that the commercial was similar to the one that aired during the Grammy awards earlier this month, which has been filmed entirely with the iPad Air2. The iSight camera of the tablet, supports 1080p 30fps video.

This only makes us wonder if Scorsese, the director of movies like The Departed and Taxi Driver, would ever take into consideration shooting and entire movie on a tablet. According to Apple, the film director is presently shooting a movie outside the United States and couldn’t be reached for comments.

“If you want to read the whole voiceover made by Martin Scorsese in the add, you can look at it below:
You can’t do your work according to the people’s values. I’m not talking about ‘following your dream,’ either. I never like the inspirational value of that phrase. Dreaming is a way of trivializing the process, the obsession that carries you through the failure as well as the successes which could be harder to get through.”

“If you’re dreaming, you’re sleeping. It’s important and imperative to always be awake to your feelings, your possibilities, your ambitions. But you also know this, for your work, for your passions, every day is a rededication.
Painters, dancers, writers, filmmakers, it’s the same for all of you, all of us. Every step is a first step, every brush stroke is a test, every scene is a lesson, every shot is a school. So, let the learning continue.”

Apple is well known for using the Oscars to put a light on its products. The first ad created for an iPhone, titled “Hello”, first aired in 2007, with several months before the original device went on sale and the first iPad ad, was first released during the Oscars, three years later.
