Bye Bye Ink Cartridges, Hello Cheap Ink Bottles

August 5, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Bye Bye Ink Cartridges, Hello Cheap Ink Bottles

Ever wondered how much money you’re spending on home printing by buying overpriced ink cartridges? If you just summed it all up and the numbers are scary, we have some good news for you: Epson just announced their new ink bottles that hold up years’ worth of ink.

For all printing enthusiasts out there, this translates into the end of breaking the bank each time you need an ink refill. Instead, thanks to Epson, we’ll now get more for less. Their products will forever eliminate the troublesome ink cartridges and replace them with a simpler, more efficient solution.

So how does the magic work? Epson’s got it all figured out. Their EcoTanks will come with the equivalent of twenty cartridges worth of ink contained in small tanks. With the new models costs varying between $350 to $1200, this will save you a lot in the long, especially since you won’t have to think about a refill for years.

Bye Bye Ink Cartridges, Hello Cheap Ink Bottles

The cheapest Epson EcoTank model promises to paint you four thousand black pages and over six thousand color pages before needing a refill. Ready to order one? Then you’ll also be happy to hear refills will cost $13 for a single bottle and $52 for an entire set.

With such good news, it certainly feels like we’re stepping into the future. Let’s admit it, we’re all ready to say our adieus to the microscopic ink cartridges that could hold up so much ink. No more missing deadlines on an important thirty page paper because you only noticed at the last moment that your ink was all dried up.

Epson seems to have hit the jackpot with their new release. If we look at regular printer sales, it’s not rocket science to notice they’re either flat or declining. But not Epson. They’re looking at least at a ten percent sales increased, in comparison with their last fiscal year.

Bye Bye Ink Cartridges, Hello Cheap Ink Bottles

With printers technology having stalled for a good few years now, the latest release should put an end to the worldwide phenomenon of printers gathering dust in a corner with symptoms such as ink magically evaporating over night.

We’re all excited to see if Epson holds their part of the bargain, after claiming they’ve solved the most annoying problem in the printing world. Everyone’s holding their breath to see if pricier printers with cheaper ink are really a better bargain in the long run than cheaper printers and more expensive ink.

Till then, make sure to check your current ink cartridge before starting to print out a thirty page document due in one hour.

Pinterest Sets Diversity Goals For 2016

Pinterest Sets Diversity Goals For 2016

In an announcement made on July 30th, 2015, Pinterest released their diversity goals for the upcoming year, in an attempt to hold themselves accountable on the new changes.

The photo sharing website broke the ice in the industry by publicly posting their diversity goals on their blog. They explained the positive step as an effort to address the important issue of diversity that plagues the tech industry.

While many other companies out there have taken small steps in tackling the problem, Pinterest is the first to take the matter in their hands and display a pro active attitude. Admitting there has been an increase in the company’s female employees number in 2014, Pinterest still wants to take on even more responsibility and set even higher goals.

Pinterest also formally undertook the task of increasing the percentage of underrepresented ethnic backgrounds among its employees.

Pinterest Sets Diversity Goals For 2016

How does Pinterest intend to put its plan into execution? They’re thinking of expanding the number of universities they use for recruiting and even launch an internship program aimed at first and second years.

What is more, Pinterest will take another measure by teaming up with Paradigm and encouraging the implementation of a training and mentorship program. They are also considering starting some “inclusion labs” on the premises in order to find new improvement ways towards their goals.

One of Pinterest’s four diversity goals is entirely dedicated to implementing a Rooney rule-type condition according to which at least one person pertaining to a minority background and one female candidate are interviewed for each leadership position available.

Pinterest Sets Diversity Goals For 2016

Pinterest’s continuous efforts in fighting for tech diversity, are sustained by engineer Tracy Chou. Through a blog post from 2013 she required tech companies to publicly release the hard data they have on diversity, estimating the actual numbers will be lower than anyone wanted to admit.

And she was right. As a consequence, tech companies started sharing the data and even Google opened up. According to their 2015 report, only 30% of jobs at Google are owned by women.

What else is on Pinterest’s agenda? They want to pump up the total number hiring rate for full time engineers to eight percent. They also plan on boosting their hiring rates for every non engineering role to twelve percent.

The five year old company currently has around five hundred employees and over 83 percent of the global users are women who plan their vacations, look for do it yourselves, and find inspiration for their weddings. Pinterest doesn’t display ads, but companies can display their products on pinboards.

HTC Grip Fitness Band Has Been Delayed

July 17, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

HTC Grip fitness band

The HTC Grip fitness band was supposed to be released this Spring. Do you remember their fitness band being showcased earlier this year in Barcelona? Well, forget it, because although the company is still planning on releasing their fitness band, it’s going to be quite different.

HTC just confirmed that after an “extensive wear testing and user feedback.”, they have decided to push it a little bit further in 2015. A spokesperson for HTC noted that the company has – “[…] decided to align Grip with the entire product portfolio for health and fitness launching later this year.”

HTC Grip fitness band

The exact HTC Grip fitness band model that we saw earlier this year in Barcelona will most likely be better, performance wise, and rumors have it that the company will still be shipping their product with their initial design.

The HTC Grip fitness band is being developed in partnership with Under Armour.

2015 has been an extraordinarily year for HTC. The company is tackling markets outside of their traditional medium – smartphones. Earlier this year, HTC announced their partnership with Steam, and their plans to build a virtual reality system. Also, they have plans in to develope home lifestyle products.

HTC Grip fitness band

Their new fitness product-line might bring in some sweet revenue to the company.

The HTC Grip fitness band was supposed to cost $199, and it held a close resemblance with Nike’s Fuelband – although, it wasn’t equipped with a built-in heart sensor, and monitor, but the company promised that Grip will come with an in-built GPS-system. We don’t know if HTC will change the price, or it will remain the same.

HTC Grip fitness band

Maybe HTC has finally realized that not featuring a heart sensor, and monitor is a deal-breaker to the majority of fitness band users. At the current moment we don’t know anything more, and hopefully, the Grip fitness band that we saw being showcased in Barcelona won’t be that much redesigned.

Here’s the official HTC statement:

Through our partnership with Under Armour, we have continued to refine our vision and approach to the health and fitness category. Our goal is to offer best-in-class products for our customers and partners. After extensive wear testing and user feedback, we have decided to align GRIP with the entire product portfolio for health and fitness launching later this year. This will be a state-of-the-art comprehensive portfolio of products for this category powered by UA RECORD. We are excited to launch this new comprehensive product suite and will share further details as we get closer to launch.

Epic Games Doesn’t Want to Make a Terrible VR Experience

June 21, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Epic Games Supports Virtual Reality

Epic Games has announced countless times that they are supporting virtual reality in any way they can, but the company doesn’t want to make a terrible virtual reality experience on their Unreal Engine.

Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, and their included resources, offers developers the tools necessary to build a virtual reality game. At the current moment the Unreal Engine supports VR hardware such as Facebook-owned Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Samsung Gear VR.

So you make an idea how much Epic Games loves the virtual reality trend, CEO Tim Sweeney said, earlier this year, that – ” It’s going to change the world. The hardware is going to double in quality every few years for another decade, to the point where, 10 years from now, it’s going to be hard to tell the difference between virtual reality and the real world.”

Epic Games Unreal Engine

That’s a pretty bold statement to be honest. Virtual reality changing the world? Let’s calm ourselves a little bit and reassess our mental state, shall we dear Tim Sweeney? Probably in 50 years or so, but not now – it’s impossible.

Engadget managed to sit down, and talk with Chief Technology Officer Kim Libreri, and Unreal Engine General Manager Ray Davis, at this year’s E3 event, to talk more about the company’s stance on virtual reality, and where they believe the trend is heading.

” We wanna make sure that, whatever platform developers choose to use, they’re well supported in UE 4″ says Libreri, which notes that VR development should have a set of standards that will not only make a developers’ life easier, but they will also ensure a great gaming experience.

Epic Games Unreal Engine Oculus Rift demo experience

Davis continues, and adds that – ” It’s always been sort of our [approach] with the engine. Even going all the way back to the original Xbox [360] and pushing back on Microsoft to make sure they put enough memory in it.”

Davis also notes that sharing what works, and what doesn’t with other VR developers, and of course manufacturers, will ensure that games will only get better with time.

Take a look at the Unreal Engine experience on Oculus Rift.

Can’t imagine what a horror game with vampires, ghouls, werewolves, and other creatures of the night might feel like – wet, that’s how!

As we start to think about the evolution of the shooter game or the exploration/action/adventure game, the Uncharted for VR, I think that it’s better to experiment initially with smaller, digestible things. As a collective, we learn that language quickly.” states Libreri.

It’s good to know that Epic Games, a company which pushed forward  the gaming industry, and its standards,  tackles virtual reality. But can Epic Games provide a good VR experience? That Unreal Engine Oculus Rift demo looks like it was made in two, max three days. What’s up with that Epic Games?

A Ton of Games Are Being Developed for Project Morpheus

June 16, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Project Morpheus

Wired has somehow gotten Sony to spill the beans about their Project Morpheus virtual reality headset. It’s going to come out sometime next year, and Sony’s focus is to build a huge library of games.

Sony was supposed to showcase their Project Morpheus and talk about their VR device Monday at their E3 keynote, but it didn’t happen like we expected. Sony just stated that it’s going to be a social event. Fortunately for us, Wired managed to get the president of Sony’s Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida to talk.

” We need to convince PS4 owners to spend several hundred dollars to purchase a Morpheus headset, on top of the PS4 they already have, and more gaming content is what will convince them.”, Shuhei Yoshida has said.

Project Morpheus

Can’t say I disapprove with their view on things, and I actually applaud their stance. When the time comes to look for virtual reality headsets I’ll choose the one that offers a huge library of games, and not just a headset that will allow me to watch movies and surf Facebook – I’m looking at you Oculus Rift, which, hopefully, you won’t become a Facebook VR platform.

Yoshida, and Adam Boyes, who is  Sony VP of publisher and developer relations, said that the company will showcase during E3 almost 20 demos so users can get a taste of what Project Morpheus is all about. Besides ““small indie teams [and] outfits.” as Boyes puts it, Sony will also support development of Horizon: Zero Dawn, a new IP, for their VR device, and a version of Ubisoft’s Trackmania.

“We have 30 or more games being developed that we are tracking — not all of them will come out at launch, but there are serious efforts being made on all of them,” the two have been reported of telling Wired.

Project Morpheus

More so, the two also point out that porting a virtual reality game from Oculus Rift to Project Morpheus may take only about a couple of days, and that the company is trying its best to fully support developers, and make their lives easier.

But can Project Morpheus go against the really popular Facebook-owned Oculus Rift? The VR company just announced its partnership with Microsoft, and Oculus managed to snag a couple of well-known dev companies to release exclusive titles on their platforms – Square Enix, Insomniac Games, Ready at Dawn, amongst others.

And let’s not forget HTC, and Valve’s alliance – can their SteamVR, also known as Vive, manage to get the needed attention from gamers? Valve has announced that they will feature a huge library of games easily downloadable through their Steam platform.

Project Morpheus

I’m going to wait this battle out, and I’m not going to jump head first. I’m more inclined of buying the SteamVR to be honest – Project Morpheus also seems really great. Don’t know what to say about Oculus Rift – since the news that they have been acquired by Facebook has been publicly announced, I’m feeling a little bit sceptical. The might sway me over – the company has announced that they are supporting developers with over $10 million.

You can Pre-Order Fallout 4 and Get a Big Discount!

June 4, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Fallout 4

Fallout 4 was just announced yesterday – Bethesda teased us for about 24 hours prior to its announcement with a countdown on their official website. Although we already knew that they were teasing Fallout 4 – you can’t get anything pass this brilliant mind of mine! HA!

The Fallout franchise is one of my favourite game series, and the news that Fallout 4 is real, made me jump up and down for a couple of minutes. It’s been four years since their last game – Fallout: New Vegas; and fans all around the world have been dying for a new release on next gen consoles. I’ll most likely play it on my PC with an Xbox One controller, because that’s how I roll baby!

Fallout 4 is going to come out for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

We don’t know that what the new post-apocalyptic iteration is going to be about, and what we know are minor details. The story will be set in Boston, and the series narrator Ron Perlman is back.

Bethesda is preparing for their E3 event – they will showcase Fallout 4 and probably other stuff on the 14th of June.

Fallout 4

We all know that graphics aren’t really that important when it comes to making a great game – take a look at Heroes of Might and Magic 3; superb gameplay, and I still play it with my friends to this day, even though it was released way back in 1999 – but why do I get the feeling that the new instalment is just Fallout 3 with a different skin? It looks almost like its older brother. The E3 event is going to shine a bright light on this issue – hopefully!

Now, shopto.net has jumped on the bandwagon and they will be offering a pretty huge discount to those who pre-order Falllout 4 for PS4, and Xbox One – no love for PC gamers huh?!

This will probably put it about $40 or something like this – considering the fact that it’s going to be released at $60, I’m already sold.

Fallout 4 Pre-Order

This comes against everything I stand for – pre-ordering games to be more exact. I really don’t want to do this, but we are talking about Bethesda here, and they have yet to disappoint me. Well, their Fallout 3 PC port was just horrible – random memory leaks, and crashes that made me throw punches into thin air, but I still love them for their PlayStation release.

The game is rumoured to be launched this Autumn – more exactly in October. But don’t be disappointed if Bethesda pushes the release for Fallout 4 sometime in early 2016. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves and wait for their E3 presentation.

Here’s the trailer that riled us up!

Nexus 2015 Rumours

May 19, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

2015 Nexus

We’ve rounded up some of the rumoured features the iPhone 6s will probably have in a recent article so I think it’s the perfect time to show some love to its rival – Google Nexus!

I absolutely loved LG-made Nexus 4, and 5, and when Motorola-made Nexus 6 hit stores, and subsequently my hands, I felt what only a kid on Christmas day who received socks can feel. But no more, because Google is once again partnering with LG, and newcomer Huawei.

There are reports that Google will launch two Nexus smartphones this year – one made by LG, and the other by Huawei. But we don’t know this for sure, and maybe the two companies are bundling together to make the supreme smartphone! Or a smartphone, and a tablet. Maybe a phablet and a smartphone! The possibilities are, well, not endless, but there are a couple of options here.

The 2015 Nexus

Artem Russakovskii, a respected and well know tech aficionado reports that there will indeed be two devices to hit 2015. One made by LG that will sport a 5.2-inch screen, and a phablet made by Huawei at 5.7-inch.

” If Google indeed rolls with both, it’d be the first time two Nexus phones came out in the same year – a strategy that makes a whole lot of sense to me as not everyone is into behemoths like a Nexus 6.” said Artem.

Google went to LG for the Nexus 6, but the company refused to work on the new iteration in the series. It’s quite a back and forth relationship they have, and hopefully the rumours are not false – even though LG is denying of working on the new smartphone. LG has denied working on the fourth, and fifth installment as well, so I don’t quite believe them when they’re making statements.

Google’s Nexus may interfere with LG’s plans for 2015 – it’s already known that they are planning on releasing the LG G4, G Flex 2, and a G4 Note – the last one being a phablet.

Google is planning on releasing 2 Nexus devices in 2015

Google released its Q1 2015 earning call, and it states that the company has witnessed a 23% growth over the year ranking up to $1.8 billion, but still it’s 3% less compared to Q3 of 2014. This revenue is based only on their smaller companies like Google Play and Google Store. Google CFO Patrick Pichette states that ” […]  the year over year increase was driven by growth of the Play Store.”, and the decline is due partly because the Nexus 6 was priced the same as the iPhone 6.

So we should be expecting a price drop when the 2015 version will hit stores. Android buyers expect to get the most bang for their buck when acquiring their devices. Price really makes a difference, regardless of what Google may say, especially to Android devices. You can’t compare them to Apple’s line because not only do they have a cult following, but they are the only one producing smartphones that work with iOS. There is no competition in the iOS marketplace, but there is a ton of challengers on the Android market.

Well, now I’m just speculating, and hopefully, my speculations will come true – I think I can speak for everyone when I saw that we would love to see Google come back to the Nexus 4, and 5 business model.

One thing that confuses the hell out of me is what are they going to name their new smartphone? Can’t really name it the Nexus 7 because it already exists, and just adding 2015 to the title seems awful. Their probably re-name it completely so no more Nexus.

Different Nexus Models

  • When should we be expecting it to drop?

If we take a look at the Google’s release schedule for its previous devices, then we should expect it to be released sometime in Q3 of this year.

  • What specs should we be expecting?

If the rumours are true that LG is indeed going to release the new iteration, then we should be expecting something like, or even better, the LG G4. It has some monster specs. We’ll probably witness QHD+ resolution, a new display technology, bigger and better camera, more RAM, and a new Corning Gorilla Glass protection for sure – amongst other things.

Steam Punk Augmented Reality Shooter From Magic Leap

May 5, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Augmented Reality Steam Punk Shooter

Google-backed Magic Leap is making the internet go crazy with their latest YouTube trailer titled – Just another day in the office at Magic Leap. Their augmented reality steam punk shooter is fresh, and crisp, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves and fall in the band wagon just yet. It’s not the first time we were promised a superb AR, or VR game only to be left outside in the rain – the only place where nobody can see you cry.

“This is a game we’re playing around the office right now (no robots were harmed in the making of this video),” said Magic Leap PR head Andy Fouché.

CEO Rony Abovitz was supposed to appear at a TED talk to speak about the game two months ago, but they pulled out unexpectedly – the reasons are still unknown to why the event was cancelled.

Augmented Reality Steam Punk Shooter

The video game bears Dr. Grordbort’s emblem – it’s a line of steam punk guns, comic books. It was created by an artist at the Weta Workshop, who is known to be a long-time partner of Magic Leap.

The whole game is basically a first person shooter where the player can use real steam punk weapons to fend off a swarm of crazy bloodthirsty robots that possibly want to enslave humanity. YOU are the only one standing in their way.

Pretty cool mechanics if you ask me – turning decorative guns into virtual weapons, and the virtual enemies are projected in into your physical space. Although this mean that you must buy the said decorative weapons from the Weta Workshop, and you’ll need a pretty big space for you to play in.

The prototype has been kept under a tight sealed lid, and nobody actually knows anything about its technological capabilities. What we know is that Google, Qualcomm, Andreessen Horowitz and Kleiner Perkins have invested $540 million.

Augmented Reality Gmail app

At first glance, you can say that Magic Leap is trying to build Google Glass on steroids, but we all know how Google’s product resulted – a mediocre device that didn’t fulfil even the tinniest of promises.

A similar product is Microsoft’s HoloLens, and we’ve seen it in action at Microsoft Build 2015 – also, check out our article regarding the top announcements made at Microsoft Build 2015.

Here’s the YouTube trailer that involves having way too much fun at the office.

Besides just having mindless fun, you can see that Magic Leap’s gear can interact with Gmail and YouTube, and you can plaster the apps anywhere. Probably even make them follow you around.

Silent Hills Game Featuring Norman Reedus Cancelled

April 27, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

Silent Hills canned game

The new Silent Hills game that was supposed to feature Norman Reedus has been officially canned!

Last summer Konami released a playable teaser trailer featuring Norman Reedus, the star of The Walking Dead, just walking about in a foggy city. Names like Guillermo del Toro, and Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima were seen in the line-up also.

But unfortunately we will never see the project come to fruition. During the San Francisco International Film Festival, Guillermo del Toro announced to the public that his collaboration with Kojima is ” not going to happen.”.

Silent Hill cancelled

Later on, Norman Reedus, or how we all know him by his TV name Daryl Dixon, tweeted an article regarding his future with the project. One word – bleak!

Silent Hills cancelled

Konami also confirmed that Norman’s contract expired, and the whole project has been cancelled.

But why would someone want to cancel a game that has a huge fan base? More so, it was the perfect setting to combine 2 fandoms into one huge cluster of geeks. Well, it’s all about the messy break-up between Hideo Kojima and Konami.

Konami owns the gaming studios, and Silent Hills seem to be collateral damage. Even though, Konami has stated that the series will continue, and it will have a bright future with the company. Even Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid will see future installments – but without the loved creator.

It seemed like the perfect landscape, the perfect medium for Guillermo del Toro to shine with his incredible vision, Kojima’s superb ability to create ever lasting characters, and a story that would keep you up at night, and of course Norman Reedus’ perfect voice, face, everything for the genre. Maybe we will see the team meet up sometime in the future, but until then we only have the playable teaser available.

If you own a PS4, and haven’t played the Silent Hills playable teaser, download it quick from the store, it’s free, and it won’t last long – it will be removed on the 29th of April!

Google Handwriting Input – a new app for Android

April 17, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

For Android devices only

Google Handwriting Input is a free app that has just been released, and it’s designed for those butterfingers among us that hate to type messages on a smartphone – you can write notes instead of typing.

Available for any device running Android 4.0.3 or higher, this cute little app transforms your handwriting into a typeface.

Google Handwriting Input supports 82 languages in 20 different scripts. It works with both printed and cursive writing input – with, or without a stylus.

It seems like a life saver for those who just hate typing messages – I know I can’t stand replying to e-mails, or texts with my smartphone, and I would rather call the person that I wish to talk to.

It can also recognize emojis, meaning you can draw your very own smiley face, and send it as a text – or you can make a terrifying angry face and scare Timmy who borrowed some money from you 5 months ago and hasn’t paid it back; it may be only $10, but it’s your money!

You needn’t worry about having a permanent connection to the internet. The app can choose from local or cloud-based handwriting recognition. Although, Google has recommended that the latter should be used by default, because it contains a ton more algorithms, and probably some magic too, that are more accurate.

This isn’t the first time Google meddles with handwriting recognition tools. You could have used this function in the Google Translate app, on mobile search and the Google Input Tool. But it’s the first time Google offers full support for Android devices.

It feels kinda sluggish to be honest. I don’t think it will be as used as Google wants it to. It’s not faster than typing, and sometimes it even misinterprets your words – it’s probably just me and my horrid handwriting, but I suppose I’m not the only one in this world.

All in all, it’s a free handwriting app and we shouldn’t be looking a gift horse in the mouth.

For more info, check out Google’s blogpost.

Plan on using it? Take some screenies with your beautiful, or horrible handwriting and share them with us in the comments section below!
