Confusion among the climate scientists

August 12, 2014 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recently requested a figure for its annual report, to show temperature trends over the last 10,000 years there seemed to be an evident problem.

Zhengyu Liu from the University of Wisconsin says that data from observation suggests that the Earth is cooling while the physical data suggests the complete opposite.

The problem has been termed the Holocene temperature conundrum. It has tremendously important implications for understanding climate change and evaluating climate models. The authors have however emphasized that this does not negate the evidence of human impact on global climate beginning in the 20th century. The question however remains, who is right? Liu suggests that maybe none of us are completely right, he suggests a data problems or perhaps a model problem, for example some physical mechanisms may be missing from the model.

Liu says that they are certain that during the last 10,000 years, atmospheric carbon dioxide rose by 20 parts per million before the 20th century. He thinks that these physical changes suggest that, the annual mean temperature should have continued to warm, even as regions around the world experienced cooling.

Liu and his colleagues created three models which took two years to complete, they ran simulations of climate influences that spanned from the intensity of sunlight on Earth to global greenhouse gases, ice sheet cover and meltwater changes. Each indicates global warming over the last 10,000 years. However, the bio and geo-thermostats used in last year’s study in the journal Science indicates global cooling beginning around 7000 years ago and continuing until the mark of humans became apparent. Liu says, in the North Atlantic there is cooling and warming data that the climate change community has not been able to figure out. Liu thinks that with the current knowledge in perspective, it is difficult to imagine any physical forces in the last 10,000 years that could have been strong enough to curtail the warming indicated by the increase in global greenhouse gases. Climate scientists are to meet this fall to discuss this baffling issue.

Kinder Morgan: King of all – Merger of three companies

August 11, 2014 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

Kinder Morgan, a Houston based company, has decided to merge all of its group of gas pipeline and storage companies. This agreement will reform the fiscal structure of the oil and gas pipeline company.

After this amalgamation the company would be the U.S’s fourth biggest energy company since it would be of worth $140 million. This deal will unite all the three companies Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, Kinder Morgan Management and El Paso Pipeline under the roof of Kinder Morgan Inc. since kinder Morgan Inc. will soon buy all the shares of these three companies.

Till  Friday the market value of all these companies was almost $92 billion, whereas Kinder Morgan has proclaimed that it would buy these companies at the monetary of $72 billion with the debt of approximately $27 billion. Due to this fusion the Kinder Morgan Inc. has to call off its unusual corporate partnership structure which lead the way to a great advantage. The Master Limited Partnership was the name of that beneficial corporate structure. MPL saved Kinder Morgan from all the Tax bills since it distribute most of company’s profit to the senior investors and collaborators. MPL has gained a lot of popularity among investors since it pays back a large sum of money to its shareholders. This enthusiasm made it easier for the MPl to raise money to purchase pipelines.

According to Richard Kinder, the company’s founder and chief executive, Kinder Morgan are a big name now and the structure of MPL is restricted therefore this one unit idea will provide the company an opportunity to develop its projects.

US: Fastest Internet in Virginia, Lowest in Alaska

August 9, 2014 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

Nowadays, what we people need is reliability that includes speed of streaming, downloading and buffering and for that we must need a good Internet connection. Recent research proven that the speed of the Internet has been increased by 10% than previous year.

The research that was done for the Virginia obtained the top position in that survey having the fastest Internet service with 13.7 megabits p/s. Whereas Alaska remained at the lowest spot with <= 7.0 mb per second.

Virgina-Alaska

When we talk about the most speedy connection in the world, South Korea is the first one with the speed of over 23.6 MBs per second.

Now if we run in depth, there are few things that are common in five states. All those areas with fastest internet are small in size and when it comes to the logic, this thing makes it much easier to do the wiring stuffs than maintaining the larger ones.

List of the states with fastest Internet;
Virginia and Massachusetts with Delaware: 13.1 mbps
Rhode Island: 12.9
Washington D.C: 12.8
Washington State: 12.5

And the low runner includes;
Alaska, Montana and Kentucky: 7.3 mbps
West Virginia: 7.5
New York: 11.5
California: 10.9
Texas: 9.4

Now if we look deeper, one of the most popular states such as New York are under the list of low runner with the speed of 11.5 MBps is ranked at 14th spot out of dozens.

The Report stated, “In contr?st to th? ov?rwh?lmingly n?g?tiv? n?tur? of th? qu?rt?rly ch?ng?s, y??r-ov?r-y??r ch?ng?s in ?v?r?g? p??k conn?ction sp??ds w?r? compl?t?ly positiv?, ?nd r?th?r strong, ?mong th? top 10 st?t?s. Across th? group, y??rly incr??s?s r?ng?d from 13 p?rc?nt in New York to ?n impr?ssiv? 68 percent in Maryland. Y??r-ov?r-y??r ch?ng?s w?r? ?lso ov?rwh?lmingly positiv? ?cross th? whol? country, with only Ohio ?nd Vermont s??ing low?r speeds.”

Facebook Profile Color Changing App is a Scam

August 9, 2014 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

Heard that you could change the color of your Facebook profile? Well, its a scam. It tricks people in to clicking on the link and giving away their information and eventually installs malware in to your PC and starts spreading to other PCs in your network, so beware.

The app tells you can pick from nine different colors while a Chinese internet security company called Cheeta Mobile found that it actually downloads malicious software compromising the information of the account and the computer. Cheeta further explained that it is very easy to package viruses and malware in the form of applications on Facebook.

The app initially lures people into the trap through a video which facilitates the hackers access to all user data. That is followed by a message which alerts the user that they have a virus threat and offers an anti-virus which actually installs malicious software. With the already fueling debate over data security on social media websites people are a tad bit paranoid, and perhaps rightly so. Facebook should take this into account and offer better data security to its users.

Samsung in desperate need for change

August 8, 2014 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

Despite being a leader in the smartphone industry Samsung has somehow always retained the image of a follower rather than an innovator like Apple or Google. The label does have a degree of validity as former employees of Samsung would admit so themselves. Jay Subhash a former senior product manager who left Samsung in April says, “The company is in somewhat of a Catch-22 when it comes to changing its culture.”
In light of the falling smartphone sales, Samsung is under pressure to re invent itself. The problem lies in the fact that the Confucian culture of Korea in general remains a secret for its industrial success, those who defy norms, challenge their bosses on creative issues or generally stand out don’t last long. Such a culture holistically prohibits change which obviously adds on to industrial and economic efficiency but it ends up compromising on creativity and innovation.

Samsung has wanted to address this issue for quite some time, but it requires a paradigm shift in the way the employees work and feel about their job. An effort was made this summer to cater a more worker friendly environment by allowing workers to wear shorts to work on weekends, this was done at the main Suwon campus south of Seoul. Flexible working hours were introduced along with maternity leave so that the workers don’t have to worry about job security.

Chairman Lee Kun-hee who is 72, remains hospitalized as a result of a heart attack in May. He had a reputation for managing the company with a sense of “permanent crisis.” The ascension of his Harvard educated son Jay Y. Lee, 46 could lead to favorable changes that benefit the company, however bringing change that effects the whole company creatively is no easy task considering the size of the company and has a possibility of back-firing. Samsung really needs to adopt a culture that welcomes innovation, openness and creativity, but the fact remains, that doing so may jeopardize it’s strongest assets, its militaristic hierarchy which allows it to outpace its competition through high levels of efficiency and productivity. This is no easy task and Samsung understands the problem and has been at it for quite some time now.

Samsung made an effort with its “Creative Lab” program through which employees can individually or in teams take a year’s time to develop an idea if it is deemed worthy of pursuit. Samsung reports that it had 14,000 ideas last year through this and some other initiatives that the company took. So that ought to bring some much needed changes.

It must also be taken in to account that the culture is also constantly evolving with the global society and younger employees don’t just want a healthy pay but require more from their employers. This is bringing about gradual but consistent change in the work culture.

A current Samsung employee suggests that “Change is inevitable.” This may hold some truth but perhaps the important question is whether Samsung can evolve with the particular needs of the industry and maintain its position at the top utilizing the changing trends of society and channeling them in their products lucratively.

Most Americans Oppose Illegal Immigration

August 7, 2014 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

President Barack Obama is considering sidestepping congress to loosen US Immigration policy meanwhile a Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that Americans are deeply worried that illegal immigration is threatening the American culture and economy. According to the poll 70% percent American which includes 86% Republicans who believe that illegal immigration damages the traditional beliefs and customs of the US. According to media reports, with Congress failing to come to terms with broad immigration reforms, it is possible that Obama may act alone in the coming weeks and give work permits to five million undocumented immigrants and even delay some deportations. This might be supported by the Hispanic and liberal voters but as the survey suggests the rest of the nation may not approve of it.

Furthermore, immigration has become a major issue recently due to media coverage of the surge of immigrants from Central America. People who are away from the US – Mexico border are speaking up against illegal immigrants now. A woman from New Hampshire asked how the authorities could ensure that a child sent from Central America to New Hampshire was disease free.

Immigration has always been seen as a vote winner for Democrats and Obama won more than 70% of the latino vote in his 2012 re-election. If Obama chooses to act alone on the issue it could make Republicans more likely to go out and vote, explained Ipsos pollster Chris Jackson.

US Treasury to relax its reductions in borrowing

August 7, 2014 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

The US Treasury Department said that it would hold borrowing steady instead of cutting federal capacity like it did earlier in the year, on Wednesday.

An official confirmed that the Treasury is satisfied with the current level of funding because finances have improved in past year which can be attributed to higher tax raters.
$27 billion would be auctioned in three year notes on August 12th, $24 billion in ten year notes on August 13th and $16 billion in 30 year bonds on August 14th with the auctions settling on August 15th. Over the past year the Treasury maintained the practice of reduced auctions of two and three year notes and as a result reduced borrowing by $72 billion on an annualized budget. Bills, notes and bonds are sold by the Treasury to finance government operations.

The Treasury also expressed that it would conduct a “small scale” bond buyback so it can test out its technology systems. Officials seemed certain that this test isn’t intended to signal any future changes in the Treasury’s use of buybacks.

Xiaomi defeats Samsung in Middle East smartphone market

August 5, 2014 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

Xiaomi, a Chinese hardware company, has become Middle East’s largest smartphone seller company. It gradually got hold of the entire cell phone market of Samsung. According to reports, the CEO of this company, Lei Jun is known as the Steve Jobs of China.

Jing Wang, a Shangai based Canalys Research Analyst said that this much revenue generating in the Middle East is a great accomplishment for Lei Jun. No doubt, the success which Xiaomi achieved recently is only possible because of the other conditions. The low performance of Samsung throughout the quarter make it more easier for Xiaomi to take the direction of the entire Middle East market. The vital role in this success is played by the alteration in the design and rates of  Xiamoi’s smart phones.

This year Xiaomi sold almost 14 percent of the smartphones dispatched to the Middle East in the second quarter. This is approximately 5 percent more than the amount of smart phones they put on the market in the first quarter. All of this demonstrates that at present the company’s growth rate is 240 percent.

There are several other things which this company manufactures for instance televisions, routers and rather dangerously named Mi pad fodleslab. Xiaomi will soon turn out to be the number one company of China through its fastest selling growth of the cell phones.

Horses Flexible Ears – The Source of Communication

August 5, 2014 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

A survey has been done by the University of Sussex which is printed in the journal Current Biology. It proved that horses can easily distinguish the facial expression as well as their ear and eye movements. This sense of horses helps them in saving themselves from the predators. People usually think that creatures who have eyes on the side of their faces can’t see what other animals are doing. This research has completely rejected this idea.

Previously, the researchers focused on the signals which a deaf human being observes in its surroundings. This time examiner monitors the horses and found out that even the ear position of another horse is also a very important sign for a horse. Moreover, they stated that for the horse’s head direction comes after the position of eye and ear.

In order to execute this experiment, the researchers arranged all life size pictures of horses to record the reaction of other behavioral horses. The result demonstrates that horses assist each other with their gaze in contemplation of food. When the researchers utilize a particular part of that animal, then the horses which were under observation could not find anything.

Several animals are able to rotate their ears almost 180 degrees and horses are one of them. According to BBC, before this research, human used a narrow perspective during the study of communication in horses therefore, they failed to spot these fundamental factors.
