Global Average – Rise in Sea Level

September 2, 2014 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

The Scientists explained in detail that the melting of the Antarctic ice sheets and contraction of ice shelves has contributed in an excess of nearly 350 Gigatons of fresh water in the surrounding oceans. This led to a drop in the salinity of the surrounding oceans, which has been supported by ship based study of water.

Craig Rye, main author of the research stated that generally salt water is thicker as compared to the fresh water. Therefore, the areas where a surplus of fresh water has accumulated researchers expected a rise in sea level.

The study is printed in the Journal Nature Geoscience.

Moreover, the researchers also carried out a computer simulation of the impact melting glaciers have on the Antarctic Ocean.

The outcome of the simulation thoroughly mirrored the real world picture portrayed by the satellite data.

The relation between air, sea and ice in these seas is essential for the stability of the Antarctic ice sheet. It also affects other environmental developments like the generation of Antarctic bottom water. The Antartic bottom water that cools down and ventilates most of the global ocean abyss.

The work was executed with a partnership of  researchers of the National Oceanography Center with the British Antarctic Survey.

Marta, the Passenger Pigeon Death Anniversary: 100 Years of Extinction

September 1, 2014 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Today is the day of ‘Marta’, the last Passenger Pigeon, which died 100 years ago on September 1 when it was just 29-year-old.

Over a century ago, these unique variety of birds offered enticing views to the nature lovers as they flocked together in millions in the sky over the United States and Canada and now they have reduced to none, thanks to the excessive human intervention.

Almost all of us were not even born to enjoy their mesmerizing beauty. But some of the historians and environmentalists who were fortunate enough to capture their beauty with their naked eyes just call them a real natural beauty.

Doug Gross, supervisor of the Endangered and Nongame Birds Section of Pennsylvania Game Commission, said that there was a time when the passenger pigeon was most abundant bird in North America. The process of its extinction began in 1800s due to the unregulated subsistence and market hunting.

Passenger pigeons were killed in such large numbers that the train cars were filled with their carcasses. The hunters not even spared their youngsters called squabs.

The human intervention was so high that whenever a nesting colony was located, the squabs were captured into barrels to be served as delicacy across the cities.

Famous writer and environmentalist Mark Avery, in his book ‘A Message from Martha: The Extinction of the Passenger Pigeon and Its Relevance Today’ said, “We lost passenger pigeon and much of the rest of North America’s wildlife through ignorance, but we can’t use that excuse today and we still plunder the world’s natural beauty. Now we can see, clearly, what we are doing.”

According to Avery, the major contributor to the extinction of these birds was deforestation or clearing of forests, construction of rail road, telegraph service, better firearms and mass hunting.

Environmentalists say the time has arrived when we should learn from our mistakes and wake up to the message of Martha to save the nature and its beauty.

Maps for Samsung’s Tizen-Based Handsets: Nokia’s Latest Offering

September 1, 2014 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

One of the leading names in the Telecom gear market, ‘Nokia OYJ’ has joined hands with Samsung Electronics to offer its latest hi-tech services in digital maps and locations to one of the biggest Korean electronics companies, the Tizen-powered smart devices. Moreover, the ‘HERE’ corporation,  a location-based services arm of the company will also provide solutions for the Gear S, Samsung’s new Smart Watch product.

The officials at Nokia confirmed that HERE has made an association with Samsung in order to bring its digital maps and location services to Samsung’s latest Tizen-powered smart devices such as the Gear S. The Gear S features a new and reformed walk navigator by HERE which is an application that allows users to experience turn-by-turn public transit routing with advanced navigation features.

Tizen, on the other hand, is an adaptable and open ended operating system which was launched in competition to the contemporary Android and iOS system software.

Most of Samsung’s latest smartphones utilize android operating system, which is also one of the popular OS in mobile phones today. A few years back, Samsung sets used ‘Bada’ software which couldn’t meet a favorable reception by the general public. This is probably one of the main reasons why Samsung is focusing on Tizen which also happens to have a strong backing by the Intel Corporation.

Samsung is now planning to introduce its first Tizen-powered smartphone at the end of this year. This is a step taken to decrease the reliance and dependency on Google’s highly popular Android operating system. Being the world’s leading smartphone developer, Samsung is ready to launch its new Tizen-supported ‘Samsung Z’ at the end of this year throughout the world.

Yellowstone Volcano can create a massive destruction.

September 1, 2014 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

Recently, a study has demonstrated that a volcano which is present beneath the Yellowstone National Park will take time in eruption. This area has already seen three major volcano eruption which happened a long time ago. The first eruption occurred around 2.1 million years ago, the second one 3.1 million years ago and the third one at 64000 years ago.

Researchers made this serious news along with an extremely distressing news that whenever this volcano blaze will explode its  ash will wrap the whole United States. It will coat cities as fas as NewYork, Los Angeles and Miami in Ash.

A super eruption is the highest category of volcanic eruption. This kind of massive incident involves the expulsion of material till 240 cubic miles. Therefore, scientist believe that this Yellowstone volcano can cause a super eruption.

People will certainly begin to worry shortly after this study, but lets make it more apparent. Currently, there are no signs that anything like this will happen soon. Usually scientist come up with theories and later on says that the previous speculation was incorrect.

Larry Mastin, the main author of this study expressed that nobody has ever seen any eruption like yellow stone. However, if it occurs, then it would be of much higher intensity as compared to several eruptions people have observed up till today.

Mastin is a geologist who works in the United States Geological Survey and is the one who assisted the researchers in the design. Researchers and Mastin developed a new Ash3D model and utilized it to locate any sort of movement of volcanic eruption. Moreover, it will facilitate the researchers to determine the chaos and destruction it could produce.

Furthermore, the Ash3D model illustrates that this Yellowstone volcano will cover the most Rocky Mountains with a meter long. It will spread out till the West and East coasts of the United States.

The intensity of  Yellowstone’s eruption would be equivalent to the explosion of  Alaska pale.

As per the prediction of scientist, there are very few chances that anything like this happens.
