Extension of Net neutrality deadline by FCC

August 16, 2014 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

The deadline for comments on the issue of Internet neutrality had previously been September 10 but has now been changed to September 15th, by the Federal Communications Commission so that the public has a few more days to express their opinions about what the government should do to regulate internet traffic.

The FCC has received over one million comments from the public on whether all businesses should be treated equally when it comes to content delivery speed or if businesses should be able to pay to have their content prioritized. The majority seems to suggest that everyone should be treated equally. Many say that internet providers should be treated as common carrier utilities.

The Writers Guild of America has also put its thoughts across, they think that the FCC should hold public hearings on the issue of internet neutrality before they decide to make any changes. Writers Guild president Michael Winship, in communication with FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, emphasized that, “The time has now come for the commission to hold public hearings on the Open Internet rule-making around the country. It is imperative that the FCC members travel beyond Washington, D.C., to hear for themselves the voices of the American people who insist upon an Internet kept available on an equal and democratic basis for all.”

Microscopic Aliens

August 16, 2014 By Leave a Comment

While our curiosity of aliens still goes unsatiated as we look for signs in radio transmissions and the sky, aliens may already be here. Perhaps not as how we imagined, but in the form of microscopic outer-space particles captured by NASA’s Stardust spacecraft over ten years ago and delivered to Earth in 2006.

A research team lead by Andrew Westphal, physicist with UC Berkeley took eight years to locate and study the interstellar bits. The research was also significantly aided by volunteers who were citizen scientists. On Thursday, Westphal and his colleagues including the volunteers announced that the particles were not from our solar system and probably got here through the explosion of a star. They also suggested that they were more than a hundred million years old.

“This dust is relatively new, since the lifetime of interstellar dust is only 50 to 100 million years, so we are sampling our contemporary galaxy,” said UC Berkeley research physicist Anna Butterworth

“A critical aspect of this was the dedication and hard work of the citizen scientists who worked on this,” Westphal said. “We couldn’t have done it without them.” Even though the team can not say with complete certainty that the particles are from interstellar space, it is the likely possibility since they were collected from the right direction – the direction of the interstellar wind.
Once the particles pass certain tests, like the oxygen isotope analysis, scientists can begin a mass collection that will span the varieties of dust from outer-space and perhaps reveal much more to us regarding alien worlds

Apple and Samsung- legal battles ended outside U.S

August 16, 2014 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Apple and Samsung the two biggest competitors have settled to leave all the court cases against each other outside the U.S.

Both the companies have claimed each other over several patent disagreement in nine countries other than U.S. these nine countries are UK, South Korea, Japan and Germany. This deal clearly states that the companies would not back out from the court cases of the United States.

Presently, Apple and Samsung are the two organizations which are the largest player in smartphones and tablet PC market. However, the companies are right now facing each other in legal fights all over the globe.

Apple was the first to sue Samsung in U.S after which a series of court cases started among the companies. It openly claimed that Samsung range of Galaxy smartphones and tablets are the perfect  imitation of iphone and ipad. The feature of “slide unlock” is primarily the bone of contention between two organizations. After that Samsung has also sued Apple over various issues which contain the rights of synchronize photos, music, videos and so on.

Whereas, the major legal fights are still going on in the United state of America. Lately, Apple has won two of these cases in the United States of America.

Apple wants Samsung to pay the amount of $2.2 since it broke two of its main patents. On the contrary, US court ordered Samsung to merely pay $119.6m to the company. This amount is nothing against what Apple asked. The court asked Apple as well to pay Samsung $158000 for infringing some of Samsung’s patents.

New technique increases accuracy of atomic-force microscopes

August 16, 2014 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Researchers at the Australian National University have found a way to make microscope probes 20 times more sensitive and able to identify forces as tiny as the weight of a virus. The technique requires laser beams to cool a nanowire probe ti minus 265 degrees Celsius. According to Ben Buchler from the ANU Research School of Physics and Engineering, the level sensitivity is accurate enough to detect the weight of a virus that is 100 billion times lighter than a mosquito.

The research has obvious medical and practical implications, as it can enhance the resolution of atomic-force microscopes. Atomic-force microscopes obtain a very precise measurement of the microscoping characteristic of a specimen by scanning a wire probe over the surface. The probes are, however, susceptible to vibration. With this new technique the vibrations can be stopped through cooling. Ping Koy Lam, a professor with ANU explains that at room temperature the probe vibrates interfering with the accuracy of the measurement. The lasers can stop the vibration. The lasers make the probe warp and move due to the heat but the movement can be controlled and the scientists were able to manipulate the warping to counter the thermal vibration of the probe.

The probe, however, can not be operated while the laser is on, it has to be switched off first and measurement needs to be taken before the probe warms up again.

After striking a new deal with the payment processor, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. will get atleast $9.4 billion from future value of its finance affiliate. If Alipay or its parent company seek an initial public offering, China’s biggest e-commerce operator will be entitled to the payment. Alibaba also gets the perpetual right to 37.5 percent of the finance arm’s pretax earnings and can buy a stake of about one-third if regulators approve. Since billionare founder Jack Ma spun off Alipay into a Chinese company in 2011, their relationship with the finance business has been contentious. Alibaba may be headed towards the largest IPO in history, the deal locks in a share of earnings from the payments unit, which has expanded into money markets and controls more than 574 billion yuan of funds. Alibaba_Chinese_logo According to Wang Weidong, an analyst at Shanghai based Internet consultant firm IResearch, ”The financial unit is adding more services and becoming bigger in scale and complete in services.” According to what was said in the US regulatory filing, the new deal will transfer Hangzhou based Alibaba’s small business lending arm to Zhejiang Ant Small & Micro Financial Services Group Co. who is the parent of Alipay, for $518 million in cash and annual fees for seven years. The implications of the sale are that financial service assets will be owned by Chinese nationals instead of global investors that may buy shares in the IPO. Yahoo gave a statement saying that the terms outline in yesterday’s filing were negotiated through collaboration and that it supported the agreement. Softbank Corp. led by Masayoshi Son who owns more than 30 percent of Alibaba seems to think the deal is beneficial for both parties.

Mammoth fish of Amazon: Arapaima goes missing gradually

August 14, 2014 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Arapaima fish which measures 10 feet (3 meters) long and weighing about 400 pound (180 kgs) is considered the largest fish on the Amazon basin are depleting gradually. It’s surprising how a massive fish goes on missing.

A recent article based on the study of fishing communities in Amazon Brazil, states that this large fish is non-existent in few parts of the Amazon Basin. And remaining parts reports a major fall off of these fishes.

Scientifically named Arapaima gigas, pertains the characteristic of breathing in air. A major reason contributing to this feature is that it dwells in oxygen- poor waterways according to Tennessee Aquarium.

“Arapaima breeds on the extremity of floodplain forests and appears on the surface to breathe periodically every 5 to 15 minutes and this is the time when they are targeted easily and hunted by fishers with their own home made canoes,” stated by Caroline Arantes, a doctoral student in wildlife and fisheries science at Texas A&M University in College Station, who helped in this research conduct.

Among five species known of Arapaima, three are already lost or unnoticed for a decade and a century ago all of the five species were dwelling here.

“Saddest part of all is, that in spite of the extinction of these, fishers are continuously harvesting these fishes,” said study leader Leandro Castello, an assistant professor of fisheries at Virginia’s Tech College of Natural Resources and Environment, in Blacksburg.

Interestingly Arapaima are not killed in the usual way as the other fishes are harvested instead of that fishers are formulating their own way of preying them using gill nets for the smaller one. Local fishers are not intended to kill the smaller fishes but still while harvesting them, end up killing whatever comes in their way and hence there is large scale depletion.

There is good news along with it, few communities have framed rules such as banning on use of gill nets and restricting minimum capture size for arapaima, is seen to have 100 times more density of these fishes than others, were there are no restrictions for fishing.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Given Hint About The Upcoming Galaxy S6

August 14, 2014 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Samsung intends to launch two new smart phones with a gap of a few months. The company launched Galaxy Note 4 today in Berlin whereas Galaxy S6 will come a bit later. Samsung’s entire focus was on the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Therefore, there are only a few rumors related to the next  flagship phone from the galaxy line.

The recent launch of Galaxy Note 4 provides an insight about the Galaxy S6. Although it is not yet released, but still people have started to a compare the two phones. Earlier, Galaxy Note 3 was considered as the company’s flagship, but now the Galaxy Note 4 swapped it.

Samsung has fulfilled all the expectations of customers associated with the Galaxy Note 4. It came with a 5.7 inch Quad HD display, speedy processor, new 16 MP camera with the option of image stabilization and much more. On the whole, it is reasonable package which is expected to generate a great revenue for the company.

Although Samsung planned to unveil various products, but the most prominent are the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy S5. The company sets out Galaxy S in April and up till now it is considered as the best option for all the Samsung lovers. Nevertheless, the anticipation of people is increasing for Samsung Galaxy S6. The features of Galaxy Note 4 which sheds some light on the future product of Samsung are as follows.

Display:

The Samsung Galaxy Not 4 has a Quad HD display that presents a sharper imagery and text. Quantum display is generally common for the smart phones which came in 2014. However, it is definitely a way better than the Full HD display.

Since the company has altered its display to Quad HD then there is no doubt that people can expect it in Galaxy S6 as well. The Galaxy Note 4 has established a standard, therefore it is certain that Galaxy S6 will maintain latest technology.

Design:

Samsung has always placed its line of Galaxy on the upside of all the other products. The company has  attached its product to the plastic design for several years and faced thousands of criticism since at that time the rivals started to offer metal designs. Eventually the company ended its own tradition and begin to manufacture plastic designs with metal border. The new Galaxy Note 4 has a plastic back along with a metal band which is present at the side of the device.  Therefore, it is predicted that Samsung S6 will come with a design similar to Galaxy Note 4. It demonstrates that the company has started listening to its customers.

Although, the sources are unable to obtain a single leaked picture of the future product. Moreover, Samsung has also offered some key sensors such as Galaxy 4’s UV sensor, heart rate sensor and a fingerprint sensor. The company has added the option of fingerprint sensor for the security and ease of users.

As per the reports of Chinese publication, the executive has already stated that the upcoming smart phone will be made of “new materials”. It will have a design similar to Galaxy Alpha. The company is planning to make agreements with some Taiwanese metal supplier for this purpose. Surprisingly, the suppliers which the company chose are famous for their loyalty with Apple. However the news is that these suppliers may increase the material pieces for its non Apple customers.

Storage:

As far as the storage is concerned, the Galaxy Note 4 comes with an internal storage of 32 GB. As always the company has also given the option of  a SD card slot along with a 50 GB  of cloud storage from Drop box. Usually, storage is the chief concern of smart phone buyers because of which Samsung has introduced ample of memory for the storage of games and other  contents. Therefore, assumptions are that Galaxy S6 will offer similar extendable storage.

Software:

As we all are aware that Samsung typically offers the latest Android software, therefore the company released Galaxy Note 4 with Android 4.4.4 Kitkat. In that case Samsung Galaxy S6 should arrive in the market with Android L. Android L is expected to release at the end of this year with some new Nexus hardware.

Improved camera, software and processor:

It is a convention of the company to upgrade three main areas of cell phone every year.  In Galaxy Note altered three things which are a camera of 16 MP, improved snapdragon 805 from Qualcomm in U.S and a brand new S Pen. Hence, there is a possibility that Samsung will upgrade these three things in Galaxy S6 as well.

We would expect Galaxy S6 to come with a new chip of any sort which would perform much better than the Galaxy S5 snapdragon 801 chip. However, it is confirmed that it would not have an S pen like Galaxy Note 4.

Carriers:

The Galaxy S came with a variety of carriers in the U.S, which includes the top five pre-paid in it. The Galaxy Note arrived with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S Cellular and Verizon. It is the tradition which the company followed from several years and the same thing we are expecting in the next year with Galaxy S6.  The company will surely struggle hard to compete with iPhone 6 even in the area of carriers.

Focus on Battery Life

Samsung offered a huge battery life in Galaxy Note 4 which comprises Galaxy S 5 Ultra Power Saving  mode  and fast charging ability.  It is evident that the company is concentrating to increase the battery life of Smartphone every year. Hence the expectations are same with Galaxy S6.

Galaxy S6 without Gimmicks:

This time Samsung is more focused on the features which people really want to see in the rather than the gimmicky software and hardware features. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 released with a lots of battery features since people are more worried about the battery than anything. High Resolution camera is the first thing which people ask before the purchase of new cell phone. Although, the design of the Galaxy Note Edge looks similar to a gimmick, but still cannot be considered as the flagship Smart phone. The acceptable alteration which the company made in Galaxy Note 4 indicates few major changes of the Samsung Galaxy S6.

Since Galaxy Note 4 is available in the markets now people are looking forward towards the rumors related  to Galaxy S6.

Climate in a warming world

August 13, 2014 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

Presently, people are so used to of global warming that most of them have not experienced the below average cooler temperature of the Earth. 1985 was the last time when the temperature of the Earth fell.

Soon people will expect a rise in temperature of Earth with heat waves since the government has no intentions to take serious measures in order to trim down the green house effect.
Michel Jarraud, Secretary-General of the U.N.’s World Meteorological Organization in an interview said that since the last three decades the global and regional temperature rose to such a great extent that people who are under 30 have never enjoyed a single day without global warming.

Moreover, he stated that the change in climate looks very slow from a human perspective, merely when it comes to scientific  evaluation its occurrence is extremely rapid. Therefore, there ought to be a continuous reminder of this risk.

Granting to the report of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), February 1985 was the last time the temperature went lower than the average temperature of the 20th century.

Currently, the expected age of the population of the world is 29.4 years, which means for the total population of Earth 7.2 billion who have never experienced the lowest temperature of Earth.

People are habitual of this constant change in climate as stated by Thomas Peterson, President of WMO commission of Climatology.
