Uber and Lyft – The Wicked Rivalry Begins

August 13, 2014 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

Two of the most famous start up companies which are biggest rivals are blaming each other. The quarrel of Apple and Google was considered the most fierce in the arena of technology, even that dispute is smaller in front of this bitter accusation.

Though the head offices of Uber technologies Inc. and Lyt Inc. are in the same metropolis, San Fransico but their resentment for each other is now prominent even in other cities. The companies are competing desperately to capture the market of transportation.

The conflict between them was already acute, but recently one claimed that the other one is striving hard to defeat the business.

On Monday Lyft has stated that since October 2013 almost 180  people who work in Uber has ordered and then abandoned. These tacts evidently had a negative impact on the conglomerate because it disturbed their service to a greater extent. Moreover, the company said that it is extremely a disgraceful act of the adversary to apply these techniques in order to slack down the business of Lyft.

Shortly after this accusation, Uber spokesman said that all these claims are untrue and Lyft is merely doing this to damage the reputation of the company. Furthermore, the spokesman said that even Uber has the similar complain with Lyft the driver and employees of Lyft has cancelled almost 13000 trips on Uber. The two companies did not pronounce the sources or evidences of these claims.

The chief purpose of this battle is to achieve the vital role of the future urban transportation. A large number of travelers now prefer Uber and Lyft for moving around rather than hiring a cab or going by bus or train.

Will Candy Crush end up like Farmville?

August 13, 2014 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

After lower than expected second-quarter results, the makers of mobile game Candy Crush Saga have reduced their 2014 forecasts. King Digital Entertainment had said it expected to make $2.25bn to $2.35bn from items purchased within its games compared to their previous estimate of $2.55bn to $2.65bn.

Its shares alarmingly slipped 22%, closing at $18.20 on the New York Stock Exchange. The company financial officer alluded towards the idea of plans to launch a sister title. According to Hope Cochran, Candy Crush will decline but it has a “very strong tail and a long tail.”

According to company reports, its quarterly revenue was $594m compared with $456m in the same period last year. According to King, as of December last year its 150 games were played more than 1.2 billion times per day and analysts value the firm at more than $5bn. Candy crush was also the top downloaded free mobile app of 2013.

Nicholas Lovell, director at Gamesbrief suggests that it has got some “fundamental issues” 78% of its revenue comes from Candy Crush Saga, which suggests that the concentration in one title is very big.

Parallels have been drawn between King and the other significant social gaming giant Zynga known for Farmville. However industry insiders argue that King is a smarter company when it comes to attracting new gamers through social media.

Climate in a warming world

August 13, 2014 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

Presently, people are so used to of global warming that most of them have not experienced the below average cooler temperature of the Earth. 1985 was the last time when the temperature of the Earth fell.

Soon people will expect a rise in temperature of Earth with heat waves since the government has no intentions to take serious measures in order to trim down the green house effect.

Michel Jarraud, Secretary-General of the U.N.’s World Meteorological Organization in an interview said that since the last three decades the global and regional temperature rose to such a great extent that people who are under 30 have never enjoyed a single day without global warming.

Moreover, he stated that the change in climate looks very slow from a human perspective, merely when it comes to scientific  evaluation its occurrence is extremely rapid. Therefore, there ought to be a continuous reminder of this risk.

Granting to the report of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), February 1985 was the last time the temperature went lower than the average temperature of the 20th century.

Currently, the expected age of the population of the world is 29.4 years, which means for the total population of Earth 7.2 billion who have never experienced the lowest temperature of Earth.

People are habitual of this constant change in climate as stated by Thomas Peterson, President of WMO commission of Climatology.

Report: Stop Buying Ivory Will Stop Killing Elephants Too

August 13, 2014 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Many of the present day incidents questions on Humanity. Where is it lost?

To what extent we can go to incur wealth and maintain showbiz.

Over the past years, African elephants are diminishing due to epidemic plundering accelerated by sale of ivory tusks in black market. Among them, elephants in Kenya have been the most targeted ones. Last year, 30,000 elephants approximately were slaughtered in Africa, making it one of the brutal acts and a shame on humanity.

People benefiting from this trade include dealers, cartels, vendors and the poachers themselves. A lesser known fact about this ivory business is that around 70 percent of it is pouring into China. A data shows there has been a steep rise on the demand of ivories and people in China are extravagantly spending on it, an exalted economy has pushed the ivory price around &1,000 in the streets of Beijing. Chinese online websites selling different products of ivory cup, combs, bookmarks, chopsticks are on heavy demand and clear techniques are also found on the forums including how to smuggle. Some rock solid evidence sheds light on the fact 150 Chinese citizens were arrested across Africa, for dealing ivory. And highest number of plundering took place where These Chinese were hired for road construction.

Not only this, the urge of expanding this trade has increased so much that in Tanzania, the impoverished are killing elephants by poisoning pumpkins an rolling them into the streets . In Garamba, many Congolese soldiers have been arrested who were seen with slabs of elephant meats and tusks.

Thanks to some organizations who are taking lead to save these innocent species, this inhuman act would have been more than ever imagined if these organizations haven’t come forward to rescue them.

Last week, a baby elephant that got segregated and lost while following a herd of cows was rescued and saved by the team of Kenya based David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, who has saved many orphaned elephants who would have otherwise destroyed in these heinous acts.

This year, this charity already saved six orphaned elephants. The aerial surveillance method used by this organization helps them in pointing out the herds of elephants and save if any poacher signals to approach them. They even rescue the lost baby or adult elephant. If an elephant is found in a secluded area, they arrange an airplane to transfer the calf to the organizations’ secure place.

Once these baby elephants are transferred to rehabilitation centers, they are grouped with other elephants to get away with the trauma.

August 12, 2014 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

At the recent DefCon hacking conference @TeamAndIRC hacked the Blackphone, claimed to be a super secure alternative to standard smartphones. Blackphone is a joint venture between Silent Circle and Geeksphone who created the phone with the primary concern of personal data protection. Rather than having a unique OS, this phone has the Blackphone’s Private OS which is built on top of Android technology which is relatively infamous for being easy to breach. The hack comes not long after Blackphone sparred with Blackberry after the latter called the secure device “unacceptable.” DefCon took place in Las Vegas, from 7 to 10th August, 2014.

Amazon up with another dispute – Disney pre-orders

August 12, 2014 By Michael Turner Leave a Comment

The reports from Wall street journal reported  that Amazon has called off the pre-orders of Disney movies which are  CaptainAmerica: The Winter Soldier and Maleficent.  The company has entirely removed the choice of pre-order from its official website since Sunday.

This news of missing pre-order was first released by Home Media Magazine. Shortly, after this news a two page ad was published in the New York Times from the group named Authors United. More than 900 authors endorsed this advertisement that includes numerous popular writers as well like Stephen King and Donna Tart.

Amazon has engaged itself in several contract disagreements with some of the world largest companies in these few months. Previously Amazon fought with Time Warner Inc’s (TWX) Warner Bros, and the Hachette Book Group, which is the world’s fourth biggest publisher to reduce the cost of their products.

This time Amazon wishes to convince the Disney group through a reduction in its  revenue. This tact will certainly put Disney in a terrible state of affairs since the entire entertainment studio depends upon the DVD sales  Currently,. Amazon can be considered as an additional revenue generator for Disney because most of the people make use of internet for reservation. Therefore, Amazon has applied a strong technique in order to pressurize its vendor,

On the other hand, when Amazon was asked to make any commentary on this matter. It simply stated that sales always ascend when the cost is low and it is evidently proved through the data accumulated by the company.

AMD is introducing custom 64-bit ARM processors

August 12, 2014 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

Similar to the way it made customized chips for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, Advanced Micro Devices is willing to make custom ARM server chips to suit the needs of the customer. During a presentation at the Hot Chips conference in Cupertino, California, Sean White who is an engineer with the company explained that the company will consider customizing its 64-bit ARM server processors to meet specific customer needs, as the market for these new types of servers expands.

He further explained that ARM chips are mostly used in mobile devices but interest continues to grow in using the low power processors for Web-hosting and cloud applications.

The company also designs x86 chips on which it competes with the more dominant Intel. Intel is also already making custom processors based on the Xeon chips for large data centers like eBay. AMD increased its focus on custom chips since last year as evident decrease in the PC market became apparent. Because of the millions of gaming consoles being shipped, the company is already making strong custom chip revenues.

At Hot Chips, the company also shared the technical details of its 64-bit ARM processor called Opteron A1100, code named Seattle. It has two DDR3 and DDR4 memory channels and will have up to 4 MB L2 cache with two cores sharing 1MB. A new specification to the ARM chips is the ECC memory, which is essential for servers to correct data errors. Other features include, engines to encrypt and decrypt data, along with compression and decompression of data. The company has started shipping a reference board with the Seattle processor to pick customers that want to write and test applications.

Google celebrate the Perseid meteor shower

August 12, 2014 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

The recent Perseid meteor shower was celebrated by Google by developing an interactive Doodle for the popular website. Google has a thing for special events like birthdays and celebrations. The virtual display includes pictures of meteors streaking across multiple outdoor scenes.

For those of who who are unaware, the Perseid meteor shower takes place once a year, each August. The show will peak on the evening of 12th August this year, although, according to NASA, the appearance of the supermoon will tamper with the show. Annual meteor showers occur when the Earth, during its orbit around the Sun, passes a trail of debris left by a comet. The Perseid meteor shower is a consequence of the orbit of the Comet Swift-Tutle around the Sun. This comet orbits the Sun every 133 years.

The Perseid meteor shower can be the most breathtaking of all annual displays. The shower appears to emanate from the constellation of Perseus, which is how it gets its name.
Sophia Diao designed the display for the meteor shower this year. It isn’t their first, but its supposed to be their most advanced.

Motorola to announce big news, soon

August 12, 2014 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

The Verge, reports that Motorola has sent invites to a launch, where it shall reveal to Smartphones, the moto 360 smartphone and possibly a headset. The invite itself reveals a headset icon, a Moto 360 smartwatch icon and two smartphone icons one indicated by the “G” and the other by the “X”.

The Moto X is the company’s flagship handset while the Moto G is a mid-range Motorola handset, both of these phones came out last year. So it is a possibility, in fact perhaps even a probability, that we may see replacements of both these phones announced at this event. It seems rather far fetched to think that the company will bring these phones to South Africa though. Since the last Motorola handsets in the country were the RAZR and the RAZR Maxx, and this was back in 2011/2012.
