North Korea’s Missile Range Reportedly Includes All of US Mainland

November 29, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Covered Missile in North Korea

North Korea reportedly has missiles capable of reaching the US mainland in its entirety.

North Korea has successfully incorporated nuclear power into its military, according to its state television. Pyongyang claims the new intercontinental missile, Hwason-15, can reach the „whole” US mainland.

The launch was announced in a special broadcast at midday, as well as in a report released by state news agency KCNA. Hwasong-15, an upgrade of the Hwason-14 intercontinental missile, was reportedly launched at 3 a.m local times from a mobile launcher in Pyongsong, in the South Pyongan Province.

Pyongyang states that the missile reached an altitude of 4,475 km (2,780 miles) and flew 950 km in just under an hour. The missile surpassed previous expectations including that of the South Korean military who responded with a „precision missile strike drill” matching the flight distance. According to Japanese officials, the Hwasong-15 did not fly over Japan as previous tests, and landed 250 km of Japan’s northern coast, within the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un personally signed off on the launch, according to KCNA. According to them, this marks the completion of North Korea’s foray into becoming a nuclear power.

„…now we have finally realized the great historic cause of completing the state nuclear force, the cause of building a rocket power”. Said KCNA.

While previous North Korean missiles were said to reach portions of the US mainland, the Hwasong-15 is considered by the US-based Union of Concerned Scientists as being capable of reaching „any part of the continental United States”. The group concluded that the missile could have traveled more than 13 thousand km on a standard trajectory. The distance between North Korea and the US is just over 10 thousand km.

The KCNA report states that the Hwason-15 intercontinental missile was built as a defense measure against „the US imperialists’ nuclear blackmail policy,” and that it would not be fired upon any country unless North Korea was provoked.

HPV or the Human Papillomavirus and Some Things to Know About It

November 29, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Getting vaccinated might help prevent HPV or the human papillomavirus.

HPV or the human papillomavirus is a condition that is quite hard to diagnose. Also, it seemingly still brings stigma to the person who contracted it. Studies have shown that this stigma around sexual health problems is a barrier that makes it harder both to diagnose and to manage such conditions.

Experts mentioned that the most important thing is to educate people about sexual health issues including the human papillomavirus (HPV). Once people know more and let go of the stigma, they might stop being afraid to get tested and to inform their partners about this condition. There are a few things everyone should know about this condition. For example, one of them is that HPV is rather common.

Almost 79 million Americans are believed to have it. The CDC mentioned that most of the people who got infected are in their 20’s. HPV is a condition to which a lot of people will be exposed at least once in their lives, claim specialists.

The human papillomavirus is considered a sexually transmitted infection. According to the CDC, this condition is an infectious one, and it can be transmitted through intercourse. It could be transferred even if one of the partners doesn’t show any signs.

People Should Ask to Be Tested for the Human Papillomavirus

Many doctors don’t test their patients for this condition unless they notice signs or traces of its presence. HPV can be tested during a Pap smears. As pointed out by some but not all, this infection affects both women and men. A 2014 study showed that 69% of the male participants had HPV and they could pass it to their partners. As it is, men don’t present the same symptoms as women.

Besides its own effects on the health, HPV might also increase a person’s risks of oral or cervical cancer, for example. Some types of this virus can cause genital warts. There is no need to panic because it takes years before this can happen and regular check-ins could help prevent this.

Most people assume that this virus stays in their system for ever. This is not the case. Most such infections are cleared from the system in around two years. There is also a possible prevention method against catching it. People can get vaccinated to lower their risk of infection. Preteens are instructed to take the vaccine because it works better when activated before exposure.

Hawaii Isn’t Taking Any Chances with North Korea; Resumes Cold War-Era Nuclear Attack Warning Sirens Tests

November 28, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Artist's depiction of a nuclear attack aftermath

Hawaii has announced it will hold testing of its Cold War-era nuclear attack warning sirens.

The mounting threat of a nuclear North Korea has prompted the state of Hawaii to resume monthly statewide testing of its Cold-War-era nuclear attack warning sirens. This if the first time in thirty years, that Hawaii is considering firing up the old alarm system.  A state official has told residents to create a plan of keeping track of their families in the event of a North Korean nuclear attack.

As part of the decades-old drill, air-raid sirens will be sounded for a minute in more than 400 locations across the central Pacific Islands. According to state officials, the test will begin at 11:45 on Friday and will be repeated on the first business day of each month. The monthly tests will be accompanied by public service announcements telling Hawaii residents to “get inside, stay inside and stay tuned” if they should hear the siren.

“Emergency preparedness is knowing what to expect and what to do for all hazards,” said Hawaii Emergency Management Agency chief, Vern Miyagi.

Hawaii’s decision to increase nuclear attack awareness comes on the heels of increased escalation between North Korea and the US. President, Donald Trump has repeatedly taunted the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, by calling him “rocket man” and threatening to unleash “ fire and fury” on his country. North Korean Foreign Minister, Ri Yong Ho called Trump’s insult an “irreversible mistake” saying that an attack on the U.S. mainland was “inevitable”.

White House chief of staff, John Kelly, has said in October that the US needs to be concerned about a potential nuclear attack considering that Pyongyang “is developing a pretty good nuclear re-entry vehicle”.

Nuclear attack sirens were discontinued in the 80s as soon as the Cold War showed signs of coming to an end. However, in light of the recent threats, Hawaii is reintroducing the alarm system as North Korea is reportedly capable of reaching both the state and the US mainland.

Agency spokesman, Richard Rapoza, said that single 150-kiloton weapon detonated over Pearl Harbor on the main island of Oahu would be enough to kill just under twenty thousand people and leave fifty thousand to 120 thousand people injured. Hawaii is 4.600 miles away from North Korea.

Pokemon Go Responsible for Hundreds of Costly Accidents in 148 days Since Launch (Study)

November 27, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

6 people playing Pokemon Go in London

Pokemon Go caused millions of dollars in property damage in a span of 148 days since it released.

Fans of Pokemon Go really enjoy playing the game when they’re driving their cars as economists, Mara Faccio and John McConnell of Purdue University point out.

Niantic’s popular augmented reality app for iOS and Android is responsible for multiple car accidents which occurred in the first 148 days after the game was released in July 2016. The two economists sifted through accident reports from Tippecanoe County, Indiana and found that most crashes and injuries occurred around Pokestops and gyms; the former is where players get virtual supplies while the latter is where they pit their Pokemon against others.

Pokemon Go Go proved to be such a lethal habit for drivers that it eventually resulted in the deaths of two people. According to the ongoing study, the total value from injuries, damage, and the two death cost the county between $5.2 million and $25.5 million. If the damage would transition to the wider US area, this would equal to $2 billion to $7.3 billion in damages.

In 148 there have been 286 additional crashes occurred in the county as opposed to the year before. 134 of these accidents occurred near pokéstops. The paper assumes the increase in crashes was caused by Pokemon Go directly.

Pokemon Go essentially forces people to leave the confines of their homes and search for digital monsters where the game tells them to. While many walk to the designated location, some choose to cheat and drive their way there. Niantic took measures to prevent people from taking advantage of these loopholes by making the game unplayable at certain speeds.

The researchers compared the numbers of crashes between pokéstops and gyms and found that accidents were more frequent near pokéstops, which points to people getting out of their cars while playing Pokemon Go.

Light Therapy Could Help People with Bipolar Disorder

November 27, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

A team of scientists is investigating whether light therapy could also help treat people with depression.

Light therapy is commonly used to treat people who suffer from SAD or the seasonal affective disorder. This condition affects a lot of people during the fall and winter or as the weather starts getting colder and the skies darker. A team of scientists is now trying to use light therapy to help people who suffer from bipolar disorder, especially ones diagnosed with depression.

The Other Uses of Light Therapy

Scientists mentioned that there is no clear motive for why people are more likely to feel sad and depressed from the lack of light. It was suggested that light helps the body produce serotonin. In turn, this might lead to a happier, more optimistic mood. Light therapy for depression consists in replacing the lost sunlight with a daily dose of white artificial light.

A light box the size of a laptop screen is being used for this still in trial mode therapy. Some people also named this lightbox the “happy box”. Scientists wanted to see if they could use this therapy for people with depression caused by bipolar disorder.

To conduct the study, the researchers monitored 46 people who suffered from this condition. Half of the participants were part of a control group and received a red placebo light treatment. The other half received the bright light therapy. All of the participants also took their medication during the study.

Also, all of them were instructed not to talk about the light therapy. They couldn’t discuss it with people from the other group and even from their own. The participants were told to place the light box at around 1 foot from their face and to start with 15 minutes sessions every day. Every week, the exposure was increased until it reached 60 minutes per day.

The researchers observed that after 4 to 6 weeks, 68% of the people who received the white light therapy achieved remission of depression. In comparison, only 22% of the people from the placebo group reached this. The study team mentioned that it is important for people with bipolar disorder not to try this therapy on their own. They point out that the study is at an early stage and that its side effects are still unknown.

Oscar Pistorius To Stay a Little Longer in Prison

November 26, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Oscar Pistorius on the sprint track

Oscar Pistorius’ sentence is now at 13 years and 5 months.

On Friday, South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal doubled the sentence of South African sprint runner and convicted murderer, Oscar Pistorius. The Olympic athlete is now sentenced to thirteen years and five months in prison.

The former Olympic and Paralympic athlete killed Steenkamp at his home on Valentine’s Day in 2013. Pistorius shot Steenkamp four times through a closed toilet cubicle door with his 9 mm pistol. He alleged the act to have been an accident after he mistook her for an intruder. However, the prosecution called it a deliberate act after the two had an argument.

Pistorius was sentenced in 2015 to six years in prison following the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. While originally convicted of manslaughter in 2014, his conviction was overturned and changed to murder.  The minimum sentence for murder in South Africa is 15 years. However, this can be lowered by individual judges if they are presented with compelling reasons to do so.

The Supreme Court called the initial sentence “shockingly lenient” as it would have granted Pistorius parole in mid-2019.

“the sentence of six years’ imprisonment is shockingly lenient to a point where it has the effect of trivializing this serious offense.” Reads the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Under the new sentence, the double-amputee runner will be eligible for parole in 2023.

Pistorius was a multiple Paralympic champion and the first amputee athlete to run at the Olympics. He was nicknamed as the “Blade Runner” due to his carbon-fiber prosthetic legs.

A spokeswoman for Steenkamp’s parents said the new sentence was “justice for Reeva” and hopes that “this is the end of the road and that everyone can move forward.”

Supreme Court Justice, Willie Seriti, noted Pistorius’ failure to convince him and his peers saying that the athlete “does not appreciate the gravity of his actions”.

Thanksgiving came and went and many actors including Uma Thurman have wished their fans happy holidays on social media. However, the actress added a special twist to her social media post by commenting on the disgraced mogul, Harvey Weinstein.

H A P P Y T H A N K S G I V I N G I am grateful today, to be alive, for all those I love, and for all those who have the courage to stand up for others. I said I was angry recently, and I have a few reasons, #metoo, in case you couldn’t tell by the look on my face. I feel it’s important to take your time, be fair, be exact, so… Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! (Except you Harvey, and all your wicked conspirators – I’m glad it’s going slowly – you don’t deserve a bullet) -stay tuned Uma Thurman

A post shared by Uma Thurman (@ithurman) on Nov 23, 2017 at 12:58pm PST

Many actresses have come forward in the past months accusing Weinstein of every possible sexual misconduct under the sun. Thurman, however, showed restraint when asked about her experience with the producer.

“Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! (Except you Harvey, and all your wicked conspirators- I’m glad it’s going slowly- you don’t deserve a bullet),” Thurman wrote on her Instagram this Thursday.

The actress has starred in several movies produced by Weinstein’s former producing company, Weinstein Co, including the Kill Bill franchise and Pulp Fiction.

Thurman hasn’t provided an account of her experience with the mogul but has said she is waiting for the whole situation to calm down before she can tell her story.

“I learned that when I have spoken in anger, I usually regret the way I express myself,” she said.

The Instagram post featured a photo of Thurman when she starred in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill franchise as Beatrix Kiddo aka The Bride.

Thurman is currently in previews for her Broadway debut starring in Beau Willimon’s The Parisian Woman.

Weinstein is under investigation by authorities from Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, New York, and London for alleged acts of sexual assault.

Global Light Pollution is Killing the Night, Scientists Warn

November 24, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Earth from orbit

Global light pollution has increased in part thanks to the rise of LED lights, scientists claim.

Scientists have been looking over satellite data and they concluded that Earth is littered with artificial light. The spread of LED lights has increased global light pollution, which in turn can affect both human and animal health.

Published in the journal, Science Advances, the results show outdoor lighting to have grown at a rate of 3 percent to 6 percent annually in the second half of the twentieth century. In essence, the line between night and day has blurred.

“…we are convinced that artificial light is an environmental pollutant with ecological and evolutionary implications for many organisms,” states Franz Holker of the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries and one of the study’s authors.

Holker added that light pollution can reshape entire social-ecological systems ranging from bacteria to mammals. Holker noted that 30 percent of vertebrates and more than 60 percent of invertebrates are nocturnal.

Researchers noted that that the increase of lighting can disrupt our body clocks and raise the risks of cancer, diabetes, and depression. Global light pollution affects animals as well, either by disorientating migrating birds and sea turtles or by attracting insects.  The study revealed that animal migration patterns are affected the most.

Lead author of the study and physicist at the German Research Center for Geosciences, Chris Kyba, notes that LED lights aren’t the only contributing factor to this new wave of pollution but rather it’s humanity’s tendency to install more and more electrical systems.

“We’ll light something that we didn’t light before, like a bicycle path through a park or a section of a highway…that in the past wasn’t lit,” he told reporters on a conference call.

LED lights have become the go-to means of increasing visibility during the night. They are cost effective and need far less electricity than other lighting systems.

Light pollution became prevalent in developing countries such as Asia and South America, however, countries that were already brightly lit, such as the United State, appeared stable. Even so, scientists believe light levels are rising everywhere in the world.

Children of Obese Mothers Could Have Neurodevelopmental Problems (Study)

November 23, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

adult hand being grasped by a baby hand

A study claims that children born to obese mothers might present higher risks of neurodevelopmental problems.

The weight of the mother can affect the brain development of their baby, claim the latest research. This new study shows that children born to obese mother present a higher risk of neurodevelopmental problems compared to the kids of normal-weight mothers. These former are at risk of suffering from attention deficit disorder, cognitive development delays, and autism.

The Weight-Related Neurodevelopmental Problems

Researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University conducted this study. A meta-analysis, its results were published in the journal Obesity Reviews. It is the first research meta-analysis that investigates the correlation between the weight of the mother and the neurodevelopment of the child.

The researchers used data from 41 studies that examined the link between childhood brain development and maternal weight to conduct their analysis. Neurodevelopment problems cause permanent conditions that can affect a child’s health.

The risk of neurodevelopment problems in kids born from overweight women was 17% higher when compared to that of other newborns. This was then noted to have increased by 51% for kids born to obese mothers. The research team considers this to be a very important study considering the fact that more than 40% of women living in the US are categorized as obese.

A report from the CDC also showed that more children are experiencing neurodevelopment problems. In 2016, almost 15% of kids had at least one such issue.

Previous studies performed on animals showed the same correlation. Despite the fact that this new meta-analysis did not prove a cause and effect relation, it showed a negative association that is considered to be rather significant.

Researchers mentioned that the study results might help women understand the importance of maintaining a healthy weight before and during their pregnancy. Scientists also stated that women need to be better informed on the matter. The researchers consider that this could help the expectant mothers lose weight before the pregnancy, especially if they are obese or even overweight.

Former Backstreet Boys, Nick Carter, Accused of Rape by Former Dream Member, Melissa Schuman

November 23, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter

According to Schumer, the former Backstreet Boys member sexually assaulted her in 2002

Former Backstreet Boys member, Nick Carter, has been accused of sexual assault by Melissa Schuman, a former member of the all-girl pop group Dream. The woman detailed the encounter with Carter in a post on her personal blog. Schuman claims the singer raped her at his apartment in 2002.

The singer claimed she first knew of Carter’s interest in her after their representative set up a phone call in the hopes that they could date.

The former Dream member said she was 18 at the time and a virgin while Carter was 22. Schuman said she was invited to Carter’s apartment during a day off from the movie they were co-starring in.

Schuman along with one of her friends went to Carter’s and listened to some of his new music. Then the Backstreet Boys singer allegedly brought Schuman into the bathroom where he started kissing her.

She states that Carter was disregarding her objections while unbuttoning her pants after which he started to perform oral sex on her. Carter allegedly then demanded her to do the same to him.

“So when he place my hand on his penis my thought was the only way to get out was to get him to finish what he had started,” Schuman wrote.

I’m not afraid anymore #metoo https://t.co/4Mk8Yw7OJX

— MelissaSchuman (@MelissaSchuman) November 19, 2017

The singer also said she couldn’t open the bathroom door due to it being locked and couldn’t call her friend because she didn’t know where she was.

After the incident in the bathroom, Carter then took the singer to the bedroom where he allegedly raped her. Schuman wrote that she told the former Backstreet Boys member that she was a virgin and was saving herself for her future husband, but Carter dismissed her pleas.

“I said it over and over again” said Schuman.

The former Dream member wrote she was inspired to come forward after seeing people victim-shame a fan who claimed to have been assaulted by Carter. Schuman notes that many victims don’t speak out because of victim-shaming.

Carter’s ex-girlfriend, Paris Hilton, accused him of domestic abuse and was arrested in 2016 for taking part in a bar brawl in Florida.
