An Ancient Far Away Galaxy Has Just Been Discovered

November 9, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Ancient and Distant Galaxy discovered by scientists

An ancient and far away galaxy has recently been discovered thanks to the Large Millimeter Telescope

One of the oldest galaxies to date has been discovered by a team of scientists courtesy of the Large Millimeter Telescope LMT). The galaxy is thought to have formed 12.8 billion years ago within and billion years after the Big Bang.

The discovery was made by an international team of researchers from the University of Massachusets Amherst and Mexico’s National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics. Designated G0 83808, the galaxy is so far away that in only showed as a blur on the Herschel space telescope. Only after scientists pointed the Large Millimeter Telescope could they focus on the find. The Telescope is located on the summit of Volcan Sierra Negra in the Galapagos and is the largest steerable dish in the world.

Distant objects are difficult to make out even with today’s state of the art Hubble telescope due to gigantic dust clouds. Telescopes like Hubble are effective when using visible and infrared wavelengths that unfortunately can’t see through the dust. The LMT, on the other hand, uses millimeter-length wavelengths capable of peering through.

This sets G09 83808 as the second oldest galaxy discovered so far with the findings being published in the journal Nature Astronomy. It holds great potential in finding out more about the Big Bang which scientists predict to have happened 13.7 billion years ago.

Astrophysicist at the University of Massachusets Amherst, Min Yu, considers G09 83808 to be one of the first galaxies ever to form after the Big Bang.

„Seeing an object within the first billion years is remarkable because the universe…was too hot and too uniform to form anything for the first 400 million years” he states.

The good news is the LMT telescope is getting upgraded and will be capable of looking even further into the universe as old galaxies tend to drift further to the edges of the universe.

Facebook Wants to Rid Itself of Revenge Porn

November 8, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Facebook is cracking down on revenge porn

Facebook is looking into ways of ridding itself of revenge porn

Facebook is looking into possible solutions for wiping off revenge porn from its platform.  The experiment is taking place in Australia and was greenlit by a joint partnership between the social media platform and the Australian government. The solution, however, is quite unorthodox.

Both Facebook and the Australian government’s e-Safety Commissioner are acting against the unwanted publication of nonconsensual media by way of nude photos. While this may seem a bit unusual, the two organizations believe it to be effective.

How it works

If a person suspects to be a victim of revenge porn they can contact e-Safety and send them a nude photo of themselves through Messenger. Facebook will then use its matching algorithms and essentially track the file on their platform.  This technology can already be found in Facebook’s photo and face matching technology. It has a slight tweak that „hashes” or tracks the media in question. By tracking your intimate photo or video, they will, in turn, be able to prevent it from unwanted attention. The media won’t be saved on their servers but it will continue catching duplicates.  In an interview with ABC, e-Safety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, reassured the public of their strategy:

„They’re not storing the image, they’re storing the link and using artificial intelligence and other photo-matching technologies”

There’s a catch

The only catch is you need to be in possession of the original file to make it work. However, the Verge stated that if you do tag your media in time, this could prevent it from being further altered by third parties.

Australia isn’t the only place where Facebook will stand its ground against revenge porn.  The platform implemented another preventive mechanism in April by photo-matching images that have been reported or taken down.

This new step towards eliminating nonconsensual file sharing appears to be Facebook’s way of giving power to the individual. But there are issues with the strategy as some have already noticed. People might not trust the website, regardless of its authority, mainly because they’d feel like they’re uploading revenge porn themselves. Australia is one of the four other countries currently testing the strategy.

Disney Wants a Big Slice of 21st Century Fox

November 7, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Walt Disney 21st Century Fox

The Walt Disney Company is reportedly interested in buying several entertainment assets from 21st Century Fox

The Walt Disney Company apparently wants to buy some entertainment assets from 21st Century Fox. Among the assets in question, Disney was also reportedly interested in acquiring Fox’s movie and television branches along with the FX cable network and a share of Hulu.

Conversations between the two entertainment giants have also reportedly ended with no announcement becoming available at the moment. Both Disney and Fox representatives have also refused to comment when asked about a potential sell.  That doesn’t mean they didn’t strike a deal.

Analysts concluded on Monday that Disney’s acquisition makes sense in the long run. Disney can strengthen its line-up of TV shows by taking from Fox’s production business strategy as the company lacks a strong television presence by comparison.

Analyst at RBC Capital Steven Cahall acknowledges the potential Disney can achieve if Fox will give in. Especially considering the company will release its own Netflix-esque streaming platform soon.

„We see the real strategy here as Fox content helping Disney build out its direct-to-consumer strategy.”

The company follows in the steps of other industry giants who are assimilating or buying out their rivals. Multinational company AT&T is in the final stages of acquiring Time Warner and in July Scripps Media was bought by Discovery Communications for over $11 billion. It’s clear that to gain a footing in today’s fast-paced streaming world being medium-sized like 21st Century Fox doesn’t cut it anymore.

While the sources who spoke on the matter decided to remain anonymous, the news can also mean that the Mouse House wants to complete its Marvel lineup. Fox owns several Marvel characters such as Wolverine and Deadpool, and it makes sense the interested party would want to have the family all in one place. It remains to be seen if Fox gives in.

Tonight Show Cancelled This Week after Death of Jimmy Fallon’s Mother

November 6, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Jimmy Fallon The Tonight Show Gloria Fallon

Tapings for this week’s Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon has been canceled after the host’s mother passed away

The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon will not be airing this week due to the death of the host’s mother, Gloria Fallon. Tapings were scheduled for the week of November 6-10. Reruns will replace them instead during that period. A person close to Fallon said the mother was ill and in a hospital at the time of the show’s cancellation.

Variety reported on Friday that NBC canceled the show’s taping for an unspecified family matter on Fallon’s behalf.

E! News confirms that Jimmy Fallon’s mother, Gloria Fallon passed away on Saturday at the age of 68. A representative of Fallon states the host was at his mother’s bedside along with her loved ones when she passed away at Langone Medical Center in New York.

While much of Jimmy Fallon’s life is private, it was obvious the host had a good relationship with his mother. In one segment of the show called #MomQuotes, Fallon reminisces about touching memories the two shared.

„My mom and I were talking on the phone for the third time that day, and she said ’We don’t talk enough’” the host tweeted.

In an interview with Howard Stone for The Howard Stern Show, the comedian and host talked about his mom, stating that she once was a nun for one week before deciding to quit. In the same interview, he shared how his parents met in high school and grew up together.

In a 2004 article for a New York magazine, Jimmy Fallon said how his mother would not be allowed to leave her stoop and how his father was part of a doo-wop group while in Vietnam.

The people and NBC extended their condolences to Fallon and his family for the loss.

Stephen Hawking Fears that AI Technology Might Outsmart Humans and Replace Them Altogether

November 4, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Stephen Hawking sitting in his wheelchair

Stephen Hawking is extremely concerned about the turn AI evolution might take

Many people are concerned about the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, and Stephen Hawking is one of them. He is afraid that we might soon be able to create a really advanced AI system, capable of performing better than humans. This might lead to the apparition of a new life form, which might come to replace humans.

The AI technology might easily become smarter than humans

Hawking is really afraid of the turn AI development might take. Since humans are already able to design viruses which corrupt computers, he thinks it’s not long until they create an AI capable of replicating itself. From there, it’s a small step until these machines become intelligent enough to surpass humans.

This is not the first time when Hawking is extremely concerned about the future of AI. During a conference on the future of intelligence at Cambridge University, he said the evolution of these machines will turn either into the best thing that ever happened to humanity, or into the worst.

The signs are already there, and AI won’t cease to progress

He thinks human brains are extremely similar to computers. This means that the machines should be able to imitate the functions of a real brain, and maybe outperform them. One alternative would be to use AIs to fight climate change and incurable diseases. However, if they are so powerful, then they might soon develop their own volition and use it in malicious ways.

Hawking things the signs are already there. Now, cars are capable of driving themselves, and a computer can outsmart a human at a game of Go. Also, researchers continue to invest a lot of time and resources into this technology, and the results won’t hesitate to come. This means that, in a couple of years, the AI achievements will seem both grand and maybe a bit disturbing, showing they should really be feared.

Mars Is the Perfect Environment Where One Can Artificially Produce Oxygen

October 23, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

The atmosphere of Mars

Researchers have found a stable source of oxygen on Mars

Scientists are already making all kinds of preparations for a manned mission on Mars, and are even hoping that, one day, we would be able to establish a human colony on the Red Planet. One big challenge astronauts need to overcome is to find a stable oxygen source, but a recent discovery might solve this problem. It seems the Martian conditions are suitable for producing the gas necessary to maintain life.

There lies a bright future ahead for the next manned mission on Mars

Scientists are actively looking for ways to make it easy for astronauts to go on Mars and establish colonies there. Now, they made another step forward by discovering the Martian conditions are nearly perfect for obtaining oxygen. This would be possible via a process called decomposition, which only requires carbon dioxide.

Usually, the decomposition of carbon dioxide is facilitated by plasmas which reach low temperatures, as the electrons in its composition make the process possible. In a new study, published in the journal Plasma Sources Science and Technology, researchers studied the temperature and pressure present in the atmosphere of Mars.

Mars houses the perfect conditions to obtain oxygen

The results showed Mars has the optimal conditions which allow the production of oxygen from a non-thermal plasma. By combining the atmosphere made up of 96 percent carbon dioxide and the low temperature, the electrons might read a higher vibration than they do on Earth. This way, the molecules of carbon dioxide have enough time to split into oxygen and carbon monoxide.

By embracing such a technology for the next mission to Mars, astronauts will be able to get a stable source of oxygen which can last for a longer period. However, this is not the only useful product of the decomposition process. The resulting carbon monoxide can work perfectly as rocket fuel.

Facebook makes payments easier by integrating PayPal into Messenger

If you are willing to send money to your friends in an easy and secure way, Facebook Messenger is here to help you. The company has just announced it has started a collaboration with PayPal which will allow people to use the service and send money to their friends directly from the messaging app. The feature is already available on iOS, and will arrive on Android shortly. However, this applies only to US users at the moment.

Payments are more accessible now on Facebook Messenger

Facebook knew how money businesses are sometimes urgent, and decided to give users the chance to deal with them via social media. Therefore, it facilitated payments on Facebook Messenger for the first time in 2015. Now, it decided to improve the service, and to allow them to send money within groups. Therefore, a PayPal collaboration will let you deal with this kind of business right away.

This payment feature was actually a part of M, an AI assistant integrated in Facebook Messenger. The Lunar Surface Has Plenty of Caverns which Can Work as Shelters for Future Colonists

October 20, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Cavern on the surface of the Moon

The caverns beneath the Moon’s surface can shelter future colonists

Researchers have hoped for quite a long time that the surface of the Moon is hiding caverns which can shelter possible colonists. Now, a team of researchers from the United States and Japan managed to find evidence that lava actually carved such formations, highlighting a great future for the next exploration missions.

Lava formed caverns beneath the Moon’s surface

While studying the surface of the Moon, scientists uncovered some elaborate caverns close to Marius Hill. It turns out these formations used to be lava tubes and, besides offering great resources of study and the perfect place to study the composition of the surface, they can be perfect for sheltering future colonists.

The Moon is surrounded by no atmosphere. This means that its surface and everything standing on it remains exposed to the harsh rays of the Sun, as well as other extreme conditions. However, the elaborate caverns provide instant protection against all these factors.

For quite a long time, researchers have been studying these formations. They have always assumed they were created by lava, but had no solid proof in favor of the hypothesis. The Moon used to have an intense volcanic activity and, when the lava dried, it left these formations under its surface. Now, the new research reveals that the caverns not only exist, but they can also provide stable shelter.

The caverns can offer shelter to future colonists

With the help of radar observation, researchers detected the hollow tubes under the lunar surface. The radar rays were launched by SELENE, a lunar observation spacecraft launched by JAXA, and, after bouncing on the surface, they returned with information on the composition and geological history of the Moon.

As soon as the radar bursts met the entrance to the caverns, they issued an echo. Then, judging from the pitch and the tone of the echo, they could tell the formations had a volcanic origin. All these caverns are located in areas where NASA had previously identified missing masses of land. Therefore, they are real, and might offer a much more welcoming shelter than we would have thought.

The study has been published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

Russia Used Pokemon Go to Spread Racial Hate Among Americans

October 15, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Digital Pokeball on a grey surface

Russia interfered even with Pokemon Go to spark controversies in the American society

Russia’s attempts to spark controversy and conflicts in the United States are well-known, but it seems they used more weapons than we would have expected. Also, some of these weapons sound extremely unlikely. Apparently, they made use of Pokemon Go to create some racial tension.

Pokemon Go, the most unlikely tool for Russian hackers

A recent report has just revealed how Russia used Pokemon Go to create controversy in the United States, and to give rise to some racial issues. In July 2016, a Tumblr page, which is now known to belong to Russia’s Internet Research Agency, sent a message to all Pokemon Go players who supported the Black Lives Matter cause.

The page told these people to go play the game in areas where police brutality instances have occurred. Also, the players were encouraged to change their current usernames and, instead, use the names of popular black people who fell victims to abusive policemen. However, Russia’s interventions didn’t stop here.

The group sparked racial controversies by using the popular game

The same Tumblr page also promoted a movement, which closely mimicked the activities of Black Lives Matter groups. This movement was called Do Not Shoot Us, had a website, and many pages across all social media platforms. They also used the slogan “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot”. Facebook managed to find out the movement’s page was related to Russia, and it was taken down the platform shortly after that.

On the Tumblr page, there was a post regarding a player who named his character Eric Garner. This man died after a New York Police officer put him in a chokehold. The same post proposed a contest to Pokemon Go players, and the prize consisted of gift cards on Amazon.

It’s not clear if someone actually entered or won this contest, but this Tumblr page is still active. However, it changed its focus on different posts, mostly about Palestine. The Russia YouTube account is, also, still active, but all the other social media pages have been taken down.

The Lystrosaurus and Its Survival Skills Can Teach Us a Valuable Lesson about Mass Extinctions

October 13, 2017 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Green Lystrosaurus

The Lystrosaurus survived the biggest mass extinction on Earth

About 252 million years ago, a mass extinction shook our planet, and led to the disappearance of 70 percent of the vertebrates living on land. However, a tusked mammal was among the survivors. This mammal, called Lystrosaurus, might hold the secret of survival in case another mass extinction hit planet Earth.

Earth was shaken by many mass extinction events

At the end of the Permian era, Earth was shaken by the mass extinction known as “The Great Dying”. Since so many species were wiped out and biodiversity suffered a massive blow, our planet was dominated by disaster faunas. This means that there were few species living in certain ecosystems, and the Lystrosaurus was one of them.

This Lystrosaurus was one of the earliest mammal ever known, and its fossils have been found spread all over Africa, Antarctica, Russia, India, and China. A team of researchers decided to study the evolution of this species and of biodiversity in general, and looked at the changes suffered by a number of 900 species which lived on the ancient supercontinent Pangaea starting 260 million years ago, up until 175 million years ago.

The Lystrosaurus survived one of the biggest mass extinctions on Earth

During this period, two mass extinctions took place, and it also coincided with the rise and fall of dinosaurs. However, these extinctions didn’t only lead to the disappearance of a huge number of species. The entire globe came to be dominated by the few survivors left.

Such events play an important role in the evolution of species, and contributed to their ability to survive similar future occurrences. By looking at the survival mechanism of the Lystrosaurus, researchers can find out how animal distribution changes when facing natural disasters of huge extent.

Because of the intense human activity which destroys natural habitats, our planet is again passing through a mass extinction event. Therefore, the Lystrosaurus can show us a possible model of the ecological changes which are to come. The details of the study have been published in the journal Nature Communications.
