April 17, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Collecting Souls

The Wisconsin man told authorities that he had to kill those people because he was collecting souls.

The Wisconsin authorities arrested a 37-year-old who allegedly gunned down four people within three hours. According to the individual’s arrest warrant, the suspect was out collecting souls. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, and the others rushed to the hospital in a critical condition.

Wisconsin Man Collecting Souls Said ‘I Love You, Bro’ To One of His Victims

On Monday, the Wisconsin authorities arrested 37-year-old Joevashaun Ward and charged him with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder.

Allegedly, on that day, Ward went to a barber shop and told someone to fetch a man who was working inside the establishment. After the individual stepped outside, Ward who already unholstered his gun told him a tall tale about him collecting souls.

The victim backed away but could not escape Ward who opened fire. After gunning down his first victim, Ward got into his Jeep Cherokee and drove off. Several minutes later, Wards shoots 34-year-old Ryan Sims who was discovered by the police bleeding on the sidewalk.

First responders tried performing CPR on the man but to no avail. Sims was later pronounced dead at the scene.

After gunning down Sins, the man attempted to shoot another pedestrian. The eyewitness told the authorities that he saw Ward driving past him with the pistol out of the window.

Ward’s last victim was a pharmacy technician whom the suspect gunned down after purchasing several Percocet pills.

According to an eyewitness, the man collecting souls said ‘I love you, bro’ to the pharmacy technician before discharging his gun.

The authorities managed to apprehend Ward later that day. A search of his vehicle revealed several spent shells and his weapon’s case. The Wisconsin man was taken into custody and charged with three counts of attempted murder, one count of first-degree murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Adult Woman, First to Be Cured of Sickle Cell Anemia in Canada

April 5, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

scheme of red blood cells affected by sickle cell anemia

An adult woman was cured of sickle cell anemia thanks to a stem cells treatment.

An adult woman from Edmonton is the first person in Canada to be cured of sickle cell anemia through stem cell treatment. This is a breakthrough treatment that offers new hope to the millions of people around the world that have this painful disorder.

Stem Cell Treatment Offers Hope, Promise to People with Sickle Cell Anemia

A genetic condition, sickle cell anemia is present from birth in the body. This manifest in the form of misshapen cells. As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or CDC explains, the red blood cells of people with sickle cell disease are hard and sticky. These are also shaped like a sickle, the common farm implement, which gives the condition its name.

Sickle cells typically die early, meaning that sufferers have a shortage of red blood cells. Another problem is that sickle cells sometimes get stuck in smaller blood vessels. This can lead to intense pain and sometimes other serious complications as well. People with sickle cell anemia present symptoms such as tiredness, dizziness, difficulty in breathing, and skin problems.

The only treatment, until now, for sickle cell anemia has been blood transfusions. Still, these are expensive, time-consuming, and can create their own complications. For example, these latter can have serious effects on the iron levels in the human body.

However, the stem cell treatment that has been used on Revée Agyepong, the adult woman from Canada, offers new hope. Stem cell therapy is a very serious procedure as it basically destroys a patient’s bone marrow. It then replaces it with healthy marrow. This has to be taken from a compatible donor without sickle cell disease. In this case, the donor was the woman’s older sister.

It is not without risks, given that the patient must take anti-rejection drugs. These help ensure that the body does not react negatively to the bone marrow transplant.

Yet for Agyepong and others like her, the treatment could help relieve pain. It will also likely extend her life expectancy. If it can be successfully replicated, other people with sickle cell anemia in Canada and around the world could have access to a new treatment.

Until now, this cell stem treatment has been used only on children with sickle cell disease, as these present smaller risks of developing complications or adverse reactions.

Bus Driver Bars Man with Goat from Riding on Detroit Bus

March 29, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Goat on Detroit Bus

Brown claimed that Deer the goat has been at his side ever since his traumatic brain injury incident.

This week’s piece of odd new comes all the way from the city of Detroit, where a bus driver’s decision of telling a man to got take hike sparked a heated debate about the service animal. According to the authorities, the bus driver argued with the discontent citizen for several minutes about the man’s intent of riding the bus with Deer, his ‘service goat.’

Man with Goat Says He’s Got Papers Saying That Deer is His ‘Service Dog’

Who said that riding the bus should be dull? Certainly not the anxious Detroit passengers who were forced to wait a while longer to get home, after the bus driver got into an unusual argument with an individual.

According to an eyewitness, the bus driver was just about to close the door and go to the next station, when another passenger appeared in the door. There appeared to be nothing wrong with the individual until he started climbing the starts.

The bus driver quickly realized that the man was not riding alone but accompanied by than a goat.

At the sight of the animal, the bus driver told the man, later identified as Erick Brown, that the goat can’s go on the bus. Brown quickly became defensive and replied that his goat named Deer was not just an animal but a full-fledged service animal.

More than that, the man offered to show the bus driver some papers, attesting that Deer, the goat, was his ‘service dog.’

However, the driver reiterated the fact that animals are not allowed on the bus and Deer is certainly no service animal. As a result, the man and his goat had to walk home on foot.

Following the incident, the man filed a complaint against the public transportation company. However, the Detroit Department of Transportation declared that the bus driver acted right and that Deer was not a service animal but a therapy pet.

Brazil Warns Entire Nation to Get Yellow Fever Vaccine

March 26, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

yellow fever vaccine

Yellow fever on the rise in Brazil – authorities are warning people to get the vaccine ASAP.

Brazil announced that every citizen needs to be vaccinated against yellow fever. This announcement was made because the country is experiencing a rise in cases of yellow fever. Since the 1940s, Brazil hasn’t seen so many cases of this disease. Brazil’s health minister, Ricardo Barros, mentioned that by 2019 more than 78 million people should be vaccinated.

Yellow Fever Vaccination Campaign Takes Brazil by Storm

Currently, the Brazilian government has begun a vaccination campaign aiming to show people why they need the vaccine and what could happen if they don’t get it. People from all 27 states are advised to take the yellow fever vaccine as soon as possible. Before this announcement, the vaccine was still recommended in only 23, not all 27 states.

This decision shows that more and more people are contracting the disease. Before July 2017, there had been 920 reported cases and 300 people died from this condition. Since the same period last year, there have been 610 cases and 196 reported deaths. The numbers show that the disease is making more victims and that vaccination is necessary.

Another problem is that many people believe that vaccination does more harm than good. There are several online communities centered on spreading false reports that link vaccines to autism or worse. This is why the rate of vaccinated people decreases more and more every year. At this moment, in the state of Sao Paulo, 95% of people have received the yellow fever vaccine. In Rio de Janeiro the percentage drops to 68.5% and further down to 54.4% when we look at Bahia, Brazil’s fourth largest state.

Yellow Fever Crossing Borders

Increasingly worrisome is that yellow fever cases are moving closer and closer to Argentina. The Pan American Health Organization mentioned that there have been at least 11 cases of travelers who were unvaccinated. People who are traveling to Brazil should get the vaccine at least 10 days before arrival. It appears that the virus is moving towards the South where it could affect several other countries in the following months.

The ceremony was held at the Buckingham Palace in London on Tuesday. Prince William stood in for his grandmother, 91-year-old Queen Elizabeth, who is best known for handing out such distinctions.

After receiving the honor, Starr, 77, admitted that he felt a “bit shaky today on my own”  without his bandmates. The Beatles drum player then joked that he would be wearing the medal at breakfast.

Starr’s bandmate and friend Sir Paul was knighted in 1997. The two other members of the Beatles, George Harrison and John Lennon, passed away before they could receive the same honors.

The recently-appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire will now join a hefty list of British musical legends including, Elton John, Rod Stewart, and Mick Jagger, all of whom now have “Sir” as their title.

A picture of the ceremony was posted on Twitter by Ringo’s representatives on Tuesday. Starr can be seen with his wife, actress Barbara Bach, posing happily outside Buckingham Palace with the drummer giving his trademark peace sign salute.

The Weinstein Company Files For Bankruptcy, Cancels Employees’ NDAs

March 20, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Harvey Weinstein.

The Weinstein Company has officially filed for bankruptcy, on Harvey Weinstein’s 65th birthday.

The Weinstein Company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, several months after the studio’s co-founder, Harvey Weinstein, had been accused of sexual assault by multiple women. This decision was first announced on February 25, after talks of a potential acquisition by a group of investors led by Maria Contreras- Sweet fell through.

The once highly successful film company also said that it would release any survivors of alleged sexual misconduct from any non-disclosure deals that prevented them from speaking out. In addition, they also struck a deal with a private equity firm, which will purchase its assets if the deal is approved in court.

“While he had hoped to reach a sale out of court, the board is pleased to have a plan for maximizing the value of its assets, preserving as many jobs as possible and pursuing justice for any victims,” said company chairman, Bob Weinstein.

The Weinstein Company also called the NDA cancellation an “important step toward justice” for the victims who had been silenced by Harvey Weinstein. In addition, they hope that the removal of the non-disclosure agreements will encourage people to come forward with their stories if they wish to do so.

Earlier last month, New York Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman, filed a civil-rights lawsuit against the film company. The lawsuit alleges that the studio violated New York’s “civil rights, human rights, and business laws”. More so, Schneiderman has been in favor of lifting the NDAs for a long time, having issued a statement in response to the recent news. He called the NDA removal a “watershed moment” and hopes that this recent turn of events will empower those who have been “muzzled” to come out and share their experience.

Aside from the company’s turmoil, Harvey Weinstein himself is facing a series of individual civil suits, including one in which he is being sued for alleged sex trafficking.

Weinstein’s lawyers denied all allegations brought against the disgraced mogul.

Earth’s Lower Mantle May Contain Water, Diamond Study Reveals

March 19, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Diamond in kimberlite.

A diamond study revealed that the Earth’s lower mantle may contain water,

Our planet’s life force, water, may be more common than expected. Researchers of a new study have found evidence that water exists deep within Earth’s mantle, approaching 640 kilometers and possibly beyond. This was seemingly confirmed after scientists examined a number of diamonds from around the world.

To reach this conclusion, researchers analyzed diamond samples from locations in Africa and China using a number of techniques, including the use of infrared light at the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The study, published in the journal, Science, looked at microscopic pockets of a trapped form of crystallized water molecules taken from the aforementioned diamonds. These traces of crystallized water, trapped in spaces known as inclusions, measure just a few microns in length and contain the molecular signature of ice VII. Researchers believe that this form of water sprung into existence after liquid water was subjected at very high pressures. The structure and chemical techniques of the crystallized water helped the researchers to determine the pressures and temperatures at which the diamonds were created. This also allowed them to estimate the depths of the diamonds’ formation.

According to the study, the diamonds appeared to originate from deep inside the Earth, within the transition zone located between Earth’s upper and lower mantles.

Researchers found that some of the inclusions likely developed from fluid existing at depths of 402 km to 547 km beneath our planet’s surface. However, some diamonds seem to point to an even deeper point of origin, ranging from 610 to 800 km in depth, possibly within Earth’s “shallow” lower mantle.

“It’s not just a curiosity to have a diamond residing deep in Earth’s mantle- this is direct evidence for aqueous fluid in the deep Earth,” said the study’s lead author, Oliver Tschauner, a professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The Reason Meghan Markle Cannot Accept Clothes for Free

March 16, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

meghan markle holding prince harry's arm with kate middleton to her left

Until her wedding with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle will continue paying for her clothes.

On Monday, Meghan Markle, Prince Harry’s fiancée, stepped out for her first official royal duty with Queen Elizabeth. It wasn’t only the event at Westminster Abbey, but also Meghan’s outfit which attracted a lot of attention.

She wore a white, $1,000 coat from British designer Amanda Wakeley. But this was only a piece of her incredible wardrobe. Let’s just remember another coat she wore for Christmas, the Sentaler one. However, as much as everyone loves her style and class, all of her items are not really that affordable.

What’s even more interesting is that at the moment, she and Prince Harry are paying for everything out of their own pockets. This is because members of the royal family cannot accept designer clothes for free.

For example, assistants like Natasha Archer, who is helping Duchess Kate, choose from a variety of options from many designers. However, the outfit that is worn for that occasion is paid for.

It’s worth noting that after their wedding, which takes place on May 19th, Meghan’s budget for clothing will be covered by the money that Prince Charles gives to Prince Harry from his income of about $28 million.

Meghan Markle’s Chic Style and Wardrobe

Last year, Prince William, his wife Kate, and Prince Harry took some of the money they needed for their public lives from a special fund of about $4.8 million.

Also, Meghan wore another controversial, $78,000, Ralph & Russo gown for her engagement portraits with Prince Harry. When those pictures were released back in December, a lot of people expressed their disagreement.

According to reports, Meghan earned about $50,000 per episode when she was still part of the cast of Suits. As for her style, fashion experts are praising it and saying that she has evolved and became a lot more sophisticated than she used to be.

E-cigarettes Are A Gateway To Smoking, Study Says

March 15, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

E-icgarettes next to flavor packs.

E-cigarettes convert many teens and young adults into cigarette smokers, a new study suggests.

Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes, continue to be promoted as a healthy substitute to smoking regular tobacco. The devices heat a liquid solution, which may or may not include nicotine, into a vapor that is inhaled by the user. E-cigarettes have been growing in popularity at a very fast pace in the United States, however, that popularity only drew more negative attention to the devices. A new study, for example, claims that e-cigarettes don’t ween users off of tobacco but actually convert many vapers into smokers.

Researchers at Dartmouth College’s Norris Cotton Cancer Center claim that vaping has led more people to start smoking cigarettes rather than avoid or quit tobacco in favor of e-cigarettes.

To reach this conclusion, they used 2014 census data, published studies and surveys on e-cigarette usage to develop a model which allowed researchers to estimate how many e-cigarette users turned to smoking. Scientists found that about 2,070 cigarette-smoking adults in the US quit in 2015 with the help of e-cigarettes. However, the model also found that, at the same time, an additional 168 thousand teens and young adults who had never smoked cigarettes began daily cigarette smokers after first using the electronic devices.

The Dartmouth model estimates that e-cigarette use in 2014 eventually lead to nearly 1,510,000 years of life lost. This figure was based on an optimistic 95 percent relative harm reductions of using e-cigarettes compared to regular cigarettes.

According to the paper’s lead author, Samir Soneji, who is also an associate professor of health policy at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine, advertising e-cigarettes as a healthier substitute to traditional smoking has done damage, mostly to young people.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned the sale of e-cigs to individuals under the age of 18. However, the vaping devices are still drawing more young people mainly because they can add fruity flavors to their e-cigarettes. These two characteristics have been the main selling points for youths, according to Soneji.

“The harms of e-cigarette use among adolescents and among young adults are serious,” Soneji said. “Kids who vape are more likely to start smoking cigarettes…”

Stormy Daniels Wants To Pay Back Trump The $130K To End Her ‘Hush Agreement’

March 13, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Stormy Daniels.

Stormy Daniels offered to give back the ‘hush money’ she received from Trump in exchange for speaking about their affair.

On Monday, porn actress, Stormy Daniels, reportedly offered to return $130 thousand she received in 2016 from president Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, as to publicly disclose her alleged affair with Mr. Trump.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, claims to have had an affair with Trump which started in July 2006 after the two had met at a celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe. Once the real-estate mogul turned political candidate was about to enter the 2016 elections, Trump reportedly tasked his personal attorney to pay the porn star $130 thousand to buy her silence.

Now, Stormy Daniels seeks to end her deal to keep quiet about her alleged affair with Trump. According to the letter which was sent to Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, from Ms. Clifford’s lawyer, Michael Avenatti, the porn actress is willing to wire the money into an account of Mr. Trump’s choosing by Friday.

Mr. Avenatti set another deadline for Tuesday to give Mr. Cohen time to answer to Daniels’ offer.

According to the letter, if Cohen were to accept the payment, Daniels’ contract would be “deemed null and void”. More so, she would be allowed to speak openly and freely about her relationship with Trump including the “attempts to silence her. The termination of the contract would also allow her to use and publish “any text messages, photos and/or videos relating to the president that she may have in her possession, all without fear of retribution and/or legal liability for damages”.

In addition, the letter seeks an agreement that neither Trump nor Cohen’s shell company, Essentials Consulting LLC, used to pay Daniels, would attempt to block the broadcast of an interview with the porn star that Daniels taped with “60 Minutes” last week.

The letter was also sent to a lawyer working on the case with Cohen, Lawrence S. Rosen.
