Meryl Streep Is Not Happy With Harvey Weinstein Citing Her In His Legal Defense

February 22, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Meryl Streep at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 2016.

Meryl Streep blasted Harvey Weinstein over citing her in his legal defense.

In an attempt to convince a judge to dismiss a federal sexual misconduct lawsuit, disgraced producer, Harvey Weinstein, has quoted several actresses, including Meryl Streep, to prove that not all of the women he had worked with had a negative experience. Alongside Streep’s example, the new legal filing included quotes from actresses, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lawrence.

On Tuesday, Weinstein’s lawyers told the federal court in New York that the class-action lawsuit filed by six women should be dismissed. According to them, the alleged assaults don’t have enough ground for prosecution, considering that they took place years ago and the accusers failed to offer facts to support claims of assault.

The disgraced mogul’s attorneys cited comments made by Streep, who had said that Weinstein had always been respectful in their working relationship.

Upon hearing of her role in Weinstein’s legal defense, the Meryl Streep issued a response to the use of her comments the next day. Streep said that Weinstein’s use of her statement as evidence for his defense is “pathetic and exploitative”.

“The criminal actions he is accused of conducting on the bodies of these women are his responsibility,” Streep said, “and if there is any justice left in the system he will pay for them.”

Weinstein’s attorneys did not shy away from including comments from actress, Jennifer Lawrence, who at one time told Oprah Winfrey that she had known Weinstein since she was 20 and said “he had only ever been nice to me”.

Gwyneth Paltrow was also mentioned in the court filing, claiming that she went on to star in several of Weinstein’s productions even after she claimed that she was assaulted by the mogul during the filming of 1994’s Emma.

Regardless of their comments, all three actresses have condemned Weinstein ever since multiple news outlets alleged decades of alleged sexual misconduct in October.

Hudson River Riddled With Pharmaceuticals (Study)

February 21, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Photo of Hudson River taken in Manhattan.

Researchers have found traces of 16 types of pharmaceuticals in the Hudson River.

Several areas of the Hudson River have been labeled hot spots for high concentrations of pharmaceuticals, according to new research by the Lamont- Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University. A large portion of the drugs found in the famous New York City river treat blood pressure, cholesterol and common pains and aches.

In 2016, researchers at Columbia University identified 16 different pharmaceutical compounds from samples taken at 72 spots along the Hudson River. The area covered stretched 155 miles, from the northern waters of Troy down to the Battery in New York Harbor.

Researchers found a combination of different pharmaceuticals from drugs that treat ulcers and epilepsy to antibiotics. Some of the highest concentrations of these substances were found near sewage discharge pipes for the city of Kingston.  Other potential hot spots were found near sewage outfalls near Orangetown and Yonkers, where researchers found 90 percent of the 16 compounds they tested for.

The study claims that there is currently no evidence that the compounds lurking in the river water have negative consequences for humans. However, the concentrations could potentially pose a threat to marine life in the Hudson.

“Some levels are high enough that you could be concerned about fish and other aquatic organisms,” said Andrew Juhl, an aquatic biologist at the observatory and co-author of the study.

In addition to the pharmaceutical compounds, researchers also found traces of caffeine and the artificial sweetener, sucralose. This discovery led researchers to believe that sewage is the likely source of most of the pharmaceuticals in the Hudson River.

Other compounds were traced back to blood pressure drugs and anti-ulcer medication, especially one called Zantac, as well as an anti-cholesterol drug called Lopil. Acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, was also found in the river.

The study was published in the journal, Water Research.

Vampire Bats Can Drink Blood Thanks To Their Genetics (Study)

February 20, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Vampire bats flying inside a sewer line.

Vampire bats can drink blood thanks to their unique gut biome enhanced immunity.

We all know what vampire bats love to eat, but what we didn’t know until now is how they are able to stomach their food source. The act of drinking blood, otherwise known as hematophagy, is not a common trait among mammals and rightfully so. Blood is extremely low in carbohydrates and vitamins, it can flood the kidneys, and most of all, it can contain a series of blood-borne diseases that our stomachs can process. So how are these flying creatures able to survive by drinking this seemingly poisonous nectar? Scientists believe that it has to do with their gut bacteria and genes.

On Monday, scientists announced that they were successful in sequencing for the first time the complete genome of a vampire bat. They found numerous genetic traits that allow the flying mammal to survive the diseases and nutritional disadvantages that are associated with drinking blood.

There are three types of bats whose primary food source is blood: the common vampire bat ( Desmodus rotundus), the hairy-legged vampire bat ( Diphylla ecuadata), and the white-winged vampire bat ( Diaemus youngi).

Common vampire bats inhabit parts of Mexico, Central America, and South America. They feed on the blood of livestock such as cattle and horses.

“We decided to study this species because it has an ‘extreme diet’, in the sense that it requires many adaptations in the organism to live on that,” notes Lisandra Zepeda, lead author of the study, and a doctoral student at the University of Copenhagen.

Dr. Zepeda and her team identified several genome features that strengthen the vampire bat’s immunity and viral defense to cope with blood-borne pathogens. In addition to their enhanced immunity, researchers also found a unique combination of gut microbes, which most other mammals wouldn’t be able to process. While analyzing the dropping of these animals, they found 280 bacterial species that are known to cause disease in other mammals.

The study was published in the journal, Nature Ecology & Evolution.

Alien Life Would Be Greeted With Open Arms At Least In The US, Researchers Found

February 19, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Alien planet depicting alien life.

Americans would welcome the idea of microbial alien life, researchers revealed.

If alien life, in its most basic, microbial form, would crash-land on Earth, how would humans react? Would they fear the discovery or be cheerful about it? It appears that most of us would welcome the notion of alien life with open arms, according to a report presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancements of Science.

Michael Varnum, a social psychologist at Arizona State University in Tempe, said that humans would “take the news rather well” if microbial life was discovered in our solar system.

To come to this conclusion, Varnum and his team conducted a survey which involved 500 US volunteers to describe how they would react if they learned that scientists discovered microbial alien life.

Varnum and his colleagues then analyzed each participant’s response using software that determined the number of words indicating a positive emotion, such as “nice”, or negative emotion like “worried”. The researcher’s algorithm also looked for reward- and risk-focused words including “benefit” and “danger”.

According to the report, most people used positive and reward-focused words to describe their potential reactions. The same results prevailed when the participants were asked how everyone else would react to the news.

Varnum and his team conducted another study where they asked another 500 US volunteers to read several newspaper articles. One of them was from 1996 and described the discovery of evidence for fossilized Martian microbes in a meteorite. Another article was from 2010 and was about the creation of a synthetic bacterial cell in a laboratory.

Both groups responded favorably to the articles, however, the most positive reactions were registered among those who read the Martian microbes article. According to Varnum, this would suggest that people are more inclined to discover the presence of alien life rather than the discovery of previously unknown-life forms on Earth.

Varnum, however, notes the small scale of the study as well as the specific population they surveyed. He and his colleagues now hope to perform a similar study on participants from different cultures, to find out if people across the world would react to the news of alien microbes.

McDonald’s Happy Meal To No Longer Contain Cheeseburgers and Chocolate Milk

February 16, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

McDonald's Happy Meal.

The McDonald’s Happy Meal will no longer contain cheeseburgers and chocolate milk.

The most famous fast food chain in the world, McDonald’s, has tweaked its Happy Meal menu in an effort to cut down on sodium, saturated fat, sugar, and calories that its children customers consume.

McDonald’s is thus taking off cheeseburgers and chocolate milk from its Happy Meal menu. While customers could still ask specifically for cheeseburgers or chocolate milk in their kid’s meal, the company hopes that not listing them would reduce how often they are ordered.

In 2014, the company removed soda from the Happy Meal menu and ever since then there’s been a 14 decrease of Happy Meal orders containing this food type.

According to McDonald’s, at least 50 percent or more of the kid’s meal options on menus will meet new global Happy Meal nutrition criteria by the end of 2022. This means that kids menus will have 600 calories or less out of which 10 percent of calories would stem from saturated fat, no more than 650 mg of sodium, and no more than 10 percent of calories from added sugar.

Happy Meals will continue to offer Chicken McNuggets and Hamburgers, according to the company.

The McDonald’s Happy Meal has long been criticized by health advocates and parents who linked the kid’s menu with childhood obesity. McDonald’s responded by tweaking its menus over the year, including cutting the size of its fries and adding fruit options. A recent change included replacing an apple juice option for one that has less sugar.

According to the company, the new changes will be introduced in the US by June.

The McDonald’s cheeseburger and chocolate milk did not meet the company’s new menu criteria, the company claims. However, McDonald’s has said that it is working on cutting sugar from the chocolate milk and hopes that the new option will be back on the Happy Meal menu eventually.

FDA Gives Go-Ahead For First Blood Test That Helps Diagnose Concussions

February 15, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Man suffering from concussions.

The FDA has approved the use of a new blood test that can diagnose concussions.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new blood test that can help doctors diagnose traumatic brain injuries known as concussions. According to the FDA, the blood test will be able to identify brain lesions which could have gone undetected if traditional detection methods such as CT scans were used.

Called the Brain Trauma Indicator, this new test was developed to help determine the need for CT scans after head injuries, reducing unnecessary radiation exposure.

According to FDA Commissioner, Dr. Scott Gottlieb, the approval was made as to ensure “that each patient is getting the right imaging exam, at the right time, with the right radiation dose”.

The test is designed to detect two proteins present in brain cells that can leak into the bloodstream following a potential concussion. Banyan Biomarkers, the company that developed the Brain Trauma Indicator, claims that the test can detect brain injuries within 12 hours of the incident.

Patients with a positive test would then be required to get a CT scan to confirm the results and determine if surgery or other treatment is needed. According to Banyan Biomarkers, the blood test would first be used in emergency rooms, however, the company hopes that it will eventually be used on football fields as well as on battlefields.

There were approximately 2.8 emergency department visits in the US in 2013 for evaluation of potential concussions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The FDA claims that most people with concussion symptoms have a negative CT scan.  Concussion symptoms include impaired thinking or memory, movement, sensation or emotional function.

The agency said gave the go-ahead for the blood test after it correctly predicted the presence of brain lesions 97.5 percent of the time. The test was conducted on about 2 thousand blood samples obtained from adults with suspected concussions.

Trump’s Lawyer Claims He Paid Stormy Daniels From His Own Pocket

February 14, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Stormy Daniels

Trump’s attorney, Michael Cohen, personally paid Stormy Daniels $130 thousand.

President Trump’s longtime attorney, Michael Cohen, claims he personally paid $130 thousand to former porn star, Stormy Daniels, who allegedly had a sexual relationship with Trump in 2006.

Cohen confirmed previous news reports describing the potential cover-up, saying that he paid Stormy Daniels (real name Stephanie Clifford) a month before the 2016 presidential election.

“Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with Ms. Clifford, and neither reimbursed me for the payment,” Cohen said.

The lawyer claims that he notified the Federal Election Commission of the arrangements after Common Cause, a non-profit government accountability group, filed a complaint alleging that the payment was of illegal nature.

According to Cohen, the transaction was “lawful” and was not seen as a Trump campaign contribution nor as a campaign expenditure.

Trump’s attorney did not explain why he made the $130 thousand payment to Daniels without seeking reimbursement or for what the money was for in the first place. He stressed that Trump and Daniels did not have any sexual encounters in 2006. However, Cohen declined to answer Tuesday when asked if the payment was intended to silence the former porn actress before the 2016 election.

Daniels was quoted in a 2011 interview where she claimed that Trump had a sexual encounter with her after meeting at a gold tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. This would have taken place a year after his marriage to Melania Trump, the current First Lady of the US.

However, at the end of January of this year, Daniels said via a written statement that the alleged affair never took place. This affirmation was later retracted during her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Daniels said that she didn’t know where the statement came from and the signature didn’t look like hers.

Judge Awards 5 Pointz Artists $6.7 Million After NYC Developer Painted Over Their Graffitti

February 13, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

5 Pointz site

A judge awarded $6.7 million to 21 artists whose work at the 5 Pointz site had been whitewashed.

A New York judge has awarded 21 artists who belonged to the iconic graffiti group, 5 Pointz, a whopping $6.7 million after a developer decided to whitewash their murals in Long Island City, Queens.

On Monday, Judge Frederic Block said there was no remorse from the owner of the warehouse building who decided to tear down the artist’s revered work to make room for luxury apartments.

“The sloppy, half-hearted nature of the whitewashing left the works easily visible under thin layers of cheap, white paint,” Judge Block said.

Twenty-one artists sued the owner of a Long Island City, Queens, location known as 5Pointz. Their works had been painted over in 2013, with the buildings being demolished a year later. The ruling was soon followed by a three-week trial in November.

The destruction of 5 Pointz was met with backlash from both New Yorkers and culture enthusiasts. This move was part of the city’s ongoing effort to strip away the cultural identity of New York neighborhoods and gentrify them with luxury condos.

The judge claims that he would not have assessed so much in damages if the owner had waited for his permits and tore down the murals 10 months later than he did. 5 Pointz was stripped of 45 art pieces which prompted the artists to sue under the Visual Artists Rights Act, a 1990 law that protects artwork of “recognized stature”.

The 5Points site had been an internationally-recognized graffiti mecca of sorts ever since the 1990s. Previous arrangements had allowed graffiti artists to legally paint on the building, even allowed artists to live and work inside it.

One of the more renowned voices who opposed 5Pointz’s destruction was Banksy, the elusive British street artist. He pleaded with New York City lawmakers to save the site in 2013 after displaying art all over the city which was part of a campaign called “Better Out Than In”.

E-Cigarette Flavor Liquids Can Still Damage Lungs Even Without Nicotine (Study)

February 12, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Bottles of e-cigarette liquid flavors.

E-cigarette flavor liquids may still cause lung damage once inhaled, a new paper suggests.

A new US study showed that e-cigarette flavor liquids, especially those with cinnamon and vanilla flavorings, may cause damage to the lungs even when they don’t contain nicotine.

Researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center focused on the potential effects that flavoring chemicals have on monocytes, a type of white blood cell.

All of the e-cigarette flavor liquids analyzed did not contain any traces of nicotine, however, the flavoring chemicals were still reported to cause tissue damage and inflammation. The cells who were exempt from the chemicals’ effects would instead die.

When exposing human lung cells to the liquids, researchers noticed an increased production of inflammation-related chemicals that were known to cause various types of lung damage. These include asthma, fibrosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder. The adverse effects of smoking flavored e-cigarettes are not immediate, however, the compounds may accumulate over time.

“Our data suggest that the flavorings used in e-juices can trigger an inflammatory response in monocytes… providing insights into potential pulmonary toxicity and tissue damage,” the researchers noted.

E-cigarettes convert flavoring and liquid nicotine into vapor that users inhale. A number of health experts have pushed these devices as a healthier substitute to smoking cigarettes, due to the flavoring chemicals’ comestible nature.

The researchers said that, even though the chemicals are ingestible, they are not safe for inhalation. Out of all of the liquid flavors examined, vanilla and cinnamon were found to be the most toxic for lung cells.

Lead author of the study, Irfan Rahman, urged e-liquid flavors be regulated and that all e-juice bottles must have a descriptive listing of all ingredients.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 3.2 percent of Americans are e-cigarette users as of 2016. In that same year, they found 4.3 percent of middle school students and 11.3 percent of high school students to have used e-cigarettes in the past month.

The study was published in the journal, Frontiers in Physiology.

Herbal Supplement Kratom Contains Opioids, FDA Warns

February 9, 2018 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

kratom powder

The FDA is pointing out, once again, that kratom contains opioids.

Recently, Dr. Scott Gottllieb, who is a US Food and Drug Administration Commissioner, warned the public about the dangers of the herbal supplement kratom. This is marketed as an alternative treatment for pain, but it seems that things aren’t that simple.

Is Kratom Dangerous?

On Tuesday, Gottlieb released a statement in which he said that they have no evidence to support the claim that kratom is safe to use, or even effective in treatments. He further explained that kratom contains opioids, which is the addictive family of drugs found in the middle of a national drug abuse crisis.

The kratom plant is native to Malaysia and its leaves are usually crushed and made into tea. Then, people drink this to alleviate their pain and/or the heroin or morphine dependence. Moreover, some use it as a help in trying to reduce withdrawal cravings. The American Kratom Association claims that in the present, there are 3 to 5 million users in the U.S.

FDA, Concerned about the Herb

Kratom can be easily found in gas stations or head shops, for instance. It comes in the form of pills, powders, capsules or energy drinks, and is loosely regulated by the FDA.

However, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention discovered that there are ten times more calls targeting kratom made to poison control centers.

The data it released refers to a 5-year period, between 2010 (when there were 26 calls) to 2015 (263 calls). However, the side effects were minimal to moderate, only 7% of them dealing with serious consequences, and there was a sole death reported.

Still, the FDA is still worried about the fact that kratom contains opioids. Back in 2016, the Drug Enforcement Administration declared that it wants to put kratom on the list of controlled substances.

This means it would respect the same regime as LSD or heroin. At the time, there was a public outcry, and the DEA had to withdraw this plan. Ever since then, it has not taken any action, but many people are worried about the use of this plant.
