Website Transforms the Earth into Tron Map

March 26, 2015 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

Website Transforms the Earth into Tron Map

If you ever wondered how the world would look if you were to be inside The Matrix, Tron or other sci-fi movies, a website transforms the Earth into Tron map so you can actually see how it would be. While we may never know how it would look in real life, we can now imagine it with the help of a recent website that transforms the Earth intro a Tron map of the world.

Vector Map needs a browser that is WebGL enabled in order to function. If you have such a browser, make sure you take a look at how the world might look like in the movie Tron. And if you don’t, well, make sure you install a browser as the website is quite the eye-candy.

The map was built with the help of Tangram from Mapzen. The software takes data from OpenStreetMap and transforms it into an animated world filled with neon lights. This works for any location, as long as you know the coordinates.

The website was discovered by Maps Mania and while Vector Map doesn’t yet feature a search function you can use a website to get the coordinates you wish and then just add them to the end of the URL. You will have to replace the coordinates already written in the address of the website.

It’s not very easy and user friendly to explore the world in Tron-like vision but if you take just one glance at popular locations, like the Eiffel Tower in France you will clearly forget all the small inconveniences. The Earth looks amazing as a video game and you will find yourself searching all kinds of locations to view them in sci-fi vision.

One thing’s for sure, we spent a lot of time on the website, without getting bored. We guarantee that you will do the same. Enjoy.

iPhone Rumor Alert: Apple Preparing to Launch 3 New iPhones in the Fall, Including an iPhone 5C

March 26, 2015 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

iphone 6cNew rumors are hinting at the fact that Apple is going to release three new iPhones in the fall of 2015: the iPhone 6S, iPhone Plus 6S Plus and the iPhone 6C.

Apple usually presents its new flagship phones in the fall, during an Apple Media Event dedicated for the unveiling of their smartphones. Last year, the event took place in September and it saw the introduction of two new iPhones, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.

The words is going around that Apple is getting ready to release not two, but three iPhone this September. The S version of the two iPhones 6 and a brand new iPhone, dubbed iPhone 6C, the iPhone 5C’s counterpart.

While it is still early to tell for sure if Apple is really going to add a C to the iPhone family, Apple fans will remember that the rumors for the iPhone 5C started around the same time as the iPhone 6C rumors did, in March.

This particular rumor comes from Digitimes and reveals that Apple’s new iPhone 6C is going to be a 4-inch device, which would mean a comeback to an older and much popular format.

A four inch display isn’t a new concept for Apple’s smartphones, both the iPhone 5/5S and the iPhone 5C had 4-inch displays. The previous models, the iPhone, iPhone 3G/3Gs and the iPhone 4/4S, all had 3.5-inch displays while the brand new iPhone 6 has a display of 4.7 inches and the iPhone 6 Plus, 5.5 inches.

There was a time when Apple said that it would never release a smartphone with a display larger than 4 inches. It even made an ad where it poked fun at Samsung Galaxy’s larger screen, saying that the 4-inch screen was ideal for a human hand. But Samsung had the last laugh, when Apple introduced the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to satisfy a market that is desperate for larger screens.

The introduction of the two larger screen iPhones drew a lot of criticism and some believe that it could push Apple into the direction the rumors are hinting at: the release of a 4-inch iPhone 6C.

The ever-elusive Apple insiders are saying that Apple is very likely to couple up with Wistron to put together the iPhone 6C, while Foxconn and Pegatron will make the iPhone 6Ss.

The report also mentions that all the Apple smartphones that are due in September will feature LTPS panels. LG Display, Sharp and Japan Display will all supply the panels for iPhone 6C and iPhone 6S Plus, while the iPhone 6S will be sourced from LG and Japan Display.

The rumor doesn’t stop there with the reveals: it adds that all the smartphones will feature Corning Glass and the new iPhones 6S and 6S Plus will be powered by a new Apple A9 chip, while the iPhone 6C will have the A8 chip under the hood. All three iPhones will have Apple Pay, which means that they will feature Near Field Connectivity and fingerprint scanners.

Many believe that the iPhone 5C, which is still being sold by companies around the world, needs to be replaced by something similar. The iPhone 5C was marketed as a cheaper iPhone, but the smartphone never really caught on, the way Apple wanted it to. While, the iPhone was indeed cheaper than the iPhone 5S, it was just marginally so.

Could Apple really want to open that can of worms all over again, keeping in mind the heat it took for the iPhone 5C? Maybe, if the iPhone 6C is indeed justifiably cheaper than a potential iPhone 6S. The iPhone 6S is going to happen, because that’s how Apple rolls, but an iPhone C is a gamble that Apple is wise not to take, considering the amount of money and effort it put into Apple Watch, which is a huge gamble for the California company.

New Mortal Kombat X Characters Are Awesome

March 26, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

New Mortal Kombat X Characters

One of the most gruesome movie villains ever created will take its rightful place among the new Mortal Kombat X characters. The developers just revealed that the Predator will be made available as a DLC in the new fighting franchise.

The trailer of the game featuring the Predator also showed that the beloved characters Tanya and Tremor will also appear in the game. The alien will be made available in the $30 Mortal Kombat X season pass along with Jason Voorhees.

It’s clear that the developers of the game, NetherRealm, will spend a lot of time making sure they balance the playing field for the alien. The trophy hunting, agile Predator will be able to resist extreme cold from Sub Zero, extreme heat from Kung Lao, the gunshots from Stryker and the radiation cast by Raiden. The superhuman strength of the alien will probably be on par with Jax’s abilities and the invisibility cloak that it’s able to use will rival Smoke’s skills.

If the alien begins to bleed green and luminous fluids, it’ll mean that your efforts to beat the character are on the right track. It’s entirely possible that the Predator will also have issues with breathing in the case that its respirator will be removed from its face.

About a week before the developers showed off the Predator as a playable character in Mortal Kombat X, they also revealed that Jason Voorhees will be resurrected from the dead in order to start wiping out some foes again.

While the Predator has its invisibility cloak and its spectrum spotting mask, Jason can go on a killing spree with the help of his trusty machete. The cast in Mortal Kombat is well-known for their imaginative ways of de-boning, disemboweling and dismembering their opponents.

Other characters that have been uncovered so far include Sub Zero, Kung Lao, Sonya Blade, Jackson Briggs, Goro, Scorpion, Reptile, Mileena, Raiden, Kitana, Kano and Johnny Cage.

Mortal Kombat X will be launched on April 14 for the PC, PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. There will also be versions of the game for the older Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 that will eventually see the light of day sometime during the summer in 2015. Other playable characters that are rumored to make their appearance in the new Mortal Kombat X include Fujin, Rain, Kabal, Sindel, Erron Black, Smoke, Cyrax, Nightwolf and Stryker.

Below you will find a trailer that reveals the Predator, Tanya, Tremor and Jason Voorhees.

New Study Links Autism and Gut Bacteria

March 26, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

autism and gut bacteriaA new study has found a link between autism and gut bacteria, as many mothers of infants with autism with ages of up to three, have a plethora of GI symptoms, such as diarrhea, constipation and food intolerance or food allergy. The study collected 10 years of data and published in the online journal of JAMA Psychiatry.

The scientists followed infants with ages between 6 months and 3 years and compared gut symptoms in autistic children to the symptoms in children with a typical development.

This particular study is what is called a forward-looking study, which means that it was designed from the beginning to test associations between autism and gut bacteria. A retrospective study is a study that would gather already present data and search for links between two or more factors.

The new study that links autism to gut bacteria was performed by scientists at the Columbia University, New York, headed by Michaeline Bresnahan, PhD at the university.

It was found that gastrointestinal symptoms were more frequently persistent and more common in babies with autism spectrum disorder than in children with a typical development for their age group, or those with a degree of developmental delay.

Bresnahan, along with her colleagues, believe that their study is the first one that examines a population to find links between ASD (autism spectrum disorder), TD (typical development) or DD (development delay) and GI symptoms and disorders.

The aim of the study was to answer the question: are children with ASD at greater risk of experiencing GI disturbances, when compared to the two other groups, TD and DD.

The study looked at data from a whopping 41,000 children with ages between 6 months and 36 months. Out of that number, a total of 195 children had autism spectrum disorder, 40,295 had typical development and 4,636 had a development delay.

After careful examination of the date, the researchers found that, compared with children with TD, children with Autism Spectrum Disorder were more likely to have a food allergy or intolerance and constipation reported by their parents between 6-18 months of age.

Children with ASD were also more likely to have constipation, diarrhea, and food allergy or intolerance in the 18-36 months range.

It was concluded by the scientists that even though gastrointestinal symptoms are quite common in early childhood, doctors should know that children with ASD may be experiencing more GI issues in the first 3 years of their life than children with TD and DD.

Ili Pika, Rare Rabbit-Like Creature, Seen For First Time In 20 Years

March 26, 2015 By Kenneth Scott Leave a Comment

ili pikaThe Ili Pika, a rare and rabbit-like creature, was seen alive and photographed for the first time in 20 years.

The Ili Pika is an endangered animal that is native to the Xinjiang region of China, in the Tianshan mountain range. The teddy bear-like animal was photographed for the first time in 20 years, after it was believed by some to be almost extinct.

The Ili Pika is sometimes being referred to as the magic rabbit and it was spotted a few months ago. The Ili Pika is even rarer than the elusive Panda bear.

Chinese officials estimate that there are less than 1,000 Ili Pikas in the China and the world. Scientists admit that the official figures could very well be wrong, because of the elusiveness of the animal.

The animal is supposed to be diurnal, which is why scientists were very concerned about the numbers of Ili Pikas being very low. This recent spotting is the first since the early 90’s, which makes the Ili Pika one of the most elusive and endangered species in the world.

While some scientists attribute the animal’s elusiveness to their remote habitat, others believe that there really aren’t many Ili Pikas left in China, which is why the sightings are so rare.

The Ili Pika live at very high altitudes, where not many people go. They are very sensitive to warm temperature, which means that the present global warming must have been one of the reasons why their numbers have dropped so drastically. As the planet warms up, the Ili Pikas retreat higher in the mountains, until they have nowhere else to go.

Li Weidong, Chinese conservationist, was the man who discovered the Ili Pika in 1983. He was also the person who took the most recent photograph of the Ili Pika.

He stated that the species could become extinct at any time and that he noticed that there simply aren’t any Ili Pikas in areas where they used to be in the past.

The most shocking piece of information is that the Ili Pika is not featured on China’s List of Wildlife under Special State Protection, a part of China’s Wildlife Protection Law, 1988 and it there is no plan to put it there.

Li Weidong hopes that a conservational organization soon becomes interested in the Ili Pika, so that the tiny creature has a chance at surviving.

Facebook Introduces New Feature: “On This Day” Brings Back Blasts from the Past

March 26, 2015 By Karen Jackson Leave a Comment

on this dayFacebook has recently unveiled a new feature, called On This Day that resurfaces old posts, photos and status updates that have happened on a given day in the past.

If a user posted some pictures of a party on this day back in 2012, Facebook will send them an alert reminding them of that particular day and how much fun you’ve had at that party.

In order for the feature to be activated, users must subscribe to the service. If they do, then blasts from the past will appear in the news feed. Users can also go to www.facebook.com/onthisday and see all of the historical posts from that particular day.

Facebook users need to know that the On This Day feature will not turn your older posts public. If a user wants their friends to see the posts or make them public, they can share them to their friends, or tweak the visibility preferences and make them completely public.

This is not the first time the social media giant has tinkered with bringing back blasts from the past, at the end of last year it implemented a Year in Review feature that resembled a digital scrapbook with content gathered from the previous year.

The feature, much like the On This Day, had its fair share of criticism, as many users complained that the feature brought back painful memories from the past. One woman was reminded by the death of her daughter in the Year in Review feature and she went on to release a very painful and eye-opening public letter on how Facebook’s feature did more harm them good.

Facebook isn’t the only online company that likes to delight or shock its users with blasts from the past. Timehop is an app that digs up old posts from various social media networks, such as Twitter, Instagram and even Facebook.

Right now, On This Day is slowly being rolled out, which means that it is not yet available all over the world. There is no word just yet, if the feature will be a permanent one.

Internet Explorer: Is it Really Dead?

March 25, 2015 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

There has been a lot of talk as of late concerning the future, or better said the nonexistent future of Internet Explorer. Speculations regarding the browser’s premature demise was  only fuelled by the comments made by Chris Capossela, who is none other than Bill Gates’ former assistant and an executive at Microsoft. Many internet users from around the world flooded Facebook and Tweeter with messages saying the “Internet Explorer is dead” or “Long live Spartan”.

internet explorer

But is Internet Explorer really dead? The answer is “no”. Following Chris’s comments, Microsoft was contacted by Mashable.com and confirmed that Internet Explorer is alive and well. They said that their new browser (codenamed Spartan) will be constructed and implemented in Windows 10, but that they will continue to make IE accessible “with Windows 10 for enterprises and other customers who require legacy browser support.”

A lot of people from around the world, including a few Hollywood celebrities declared that they use Internet Explorer 11 as their primary web browser. To be fair it is not as bad as a browser as critics made it out to be. It has, in most part, the same features other browsers offer, it is not slow and has an outstanding graphic processing.  It is true that it’s not as polished or as responsive as Chrome or Firefox but it isn’t terrible either.

If you were to take a look at NetMarketShare.com you will be surprised to find out that Internet Explorer 11 has the highest market share concerning browsers. It holds the first position with 22.29% and it is followed by Internet Explorer 8 with 19.08% while Google Chrome occupies the third position with only 15.10%.

But why does “everybody” hate Internet Explorer?

I think that in order to answer that question we’ll have to take a step back into the past and revisit the earliest version. Many people do not know that Microsoft didn’t actually create Internet Explorer. They just purchased “Spyglass Mosaic”  from a company called Spyglass in the early 90s, slapped a shinny new sticker on in and renamed it Internet Explorer.

A brilliant marketing campaign from Microsoft made Internet Explorer the number one browser in a very short time outclassing “Netscape Navigator” and managed to mention that spot for many years to come.

On November 9, 2004 a new, free and open-source web browser emerged called Mozilla Firefox or simply known as “Firefox”. It was the new best thing and everybody was using it, praising it and calling it the “browser of the future”. But it had a lot of its own problems and by the end it failed to deliver. I used it for a little while and threw it away as soon as Chrome showed its magnificent head.

I think that it was that exact market dominance that made Internet Explorer so hated, the fact that it was always forced on us by developers. There are still programs to this day that will use Internet Explorer exclusively, just take a look at SopCast.

I prefer Chrome, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t use Internet Explorer too. As a matter of fact I use them both on a daily basic and I think that in the end, it is a question of preference. After its public release on December 11, 2008, Chrome rapidly became the most used browser in the world. Its clean and slick interface made it a favorite for developers and ordinary users alike. Google understood how important accessibility was so they made it so Chrome can be accessed from any computer, smartphone or tablet, by simply entering your Google user name and password.

It saves all your bookmarks, all your settings and browser history so you only have to configure it once and you will never have to do it again. It keeps your information even if you reinstall your OS or format your Hard Drive or SSD. But for everything that it does well you can always find something that Chrome doesn’t do so good. Take third party apps for example and you will find out that Chrome struggles with them. Just count the number of times Shockwave Player will crash during a week and how much it will slow down your computer.

Do not get me wrong I’m not saying Internet Explorer is better or that Chrome is, all I want to say is that when it comes to their bare minimum and you strip them down to the core they are not as different as you might think. Sure, both of them have issues but there is no such thing as a perfect web browser. Who knows, maybe Spartan will be the knight in shining armor we’ve all been waiting for, the one that will rescue us from the endless crashes and debates about what is the best browser.

You may congratulate Google for designing a very solid web browser but never underestimate Microsoft and their desire to finally catch up. With a powerful  name like Spartan I can only look forward to it and hope that it will be faster, more stable, better secured and at least as accessible as Chrome is at this time. The competition can only benefit the customer in the end and nobody can say for sure where our browser architecture would be today without the existence of Internet Explorer.

The Mars One Project – Fact or Fiction?

March 25, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

mars oneEver since the Mars One project was announced in 2010, people have been tuning in to find out more about the team that plans to head out to Mars in 2027. But could the Mars One project become a reality, or was it doomed from the beginning? New information released by one of the Mars One finalists is pointing to the latter.

The Mars One project is a bold and one-of-a-kind project that promises to put humans of the Red Planet. The one-way trip is supposed to take place in the year 2027 and its purpose is to colonize the planet. The people heading out to Mars, are not supposed to come back, as it would more than double the price for the mission and defeat the purpose of the mission, which is to colonize and make a habitable spot on the Red Planet.

The Mars One project is the brain child of Dutch man Bas Lansdorp, the CEO of the company behind Mars One. He says the whole mission can happen using the technology that is available to people today.

Needless to say, such a complex and almost unfathomable mission is bound to be plagued by controversy. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has done some research and in 2014 it concluded that the program is not realistic. Other articles that have popped up all over the online media have called into question the ethical, financial and scientific feasibility of the project. With all that around the Mars One, Lansdorp still says that the project is not only feasible, but that it is going to happen at the time when it is supposed to happen.

Mars One and the Science Behind It

In 12 years, Mars One intends to send four people to the Red Planet with the purpose to launch more manned missions and ultimately colonize Mars. This is supposed to be done with the technology that is available to people at the moment. Also, Mars One is not going to design nor manufacture any hardware itself and it is completely dependent on the companies that build systems needed to get and stay on Mars.

What strikes as odd is that, while Lansdorp is a mechanical engineer, he has admitted that he does not understand the scientific details behind the Mars One mission. Mars One plans to outsource every single piece of tech work to various other companies, including Paragon Space Development Corporation that is working on the life-support systems for Mars One. Paragon’s report on the work and science behind Mars One is supposed to come out this April and it is going to be the first attempt at explaining the science behind Mars One.

Andrew Owens and Sydney Do, two of the MIT researchers who performed the study that revealed Mars One’s many flaws, said that the Mars One mission plan is simply not feasible. They concluded that significant technological development is needed before people can walk on Mars, much less support a growing colony of humans.

Dr. Norbert Kraft Says it Isn’t So

Doctor Norbert Kraft conducted research for the Russian Space Agency, NASA and JAXA (the Japanese space agency). He holds an M.D. from the University of Vienna, Austria and he is a fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association. He is the chief medical officer for Mars One and he doesn’t agree with the MIT study that says the mission is not feasible.

Kraft says that the research done by MIT is actually not a research at all. He undermines the scientists’ work and importance by calling them a student and an undergraduate student who just wanted to make a presentation at a conference.

Owens and Do are not undergrads, they are PhD candidates in astronautics and aeronautics at MIT and each of them has a Master of Science in the same fields at MIT. How could Kraft say that the two scientists have not done enough research on the Mars One mission, when he himself has not done enough research on them?

Lansdorp also agrees with Kraft and calls Owens and Do students, but the MIT research didn’t leave Lansdorp all that cold. The MIT research results did change two sections (the goals and the expected amount of plants needed on Mars) on the Mars One website, so Lansdorp and Kraft do believe some of the research results after all, even though they do not want to admit.

Another critic of Mars One is Nobel-prize theoretical physicist, Gerard ‘t Hooft, who says that it would take people 100 years to settle on Mars and at least 10 times the amount of money Mars One is currently listing.

Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian astronaut to walk in space, says the Mars One project is disillusioning people and that it doesn’t address even the most basic ideas about space travel.

NASA did not chime in on the subject of Mars and it is not expected to do so in the near future.

Mars One Finalist Reveals a Plethora of Inconsistencies

Doctor Joseph Roche is a professor at Dublin’s Trinity School of Education and has a PhD in astrophysics and physics. He is also one of the 100 finalists for the Mars One Mission.

Last week Elmo Keep from Medium published an extensive interview with Roche that made took the Internet by storm. The reason behind that is the fact that Roche doesn’t believe Mars One is going to happen and he’s been giving plenty of reasons to support his claim.

The budget for the Mars One mission is very low, at $6 billion and Roche suspected from the beginning that there had to be something suspect about the entire mission. In the interview he revealed that he did not meet a single person from the Mars One project in person. Remember, he was chosen out of, Mars One claimed, 200,000 applicants. Yet, Roche said nobody ever wanted to talk to him in person.

Roche said that the entire ranking within the project is entirely points-based. Once you apply and join the Mars One Community you are given points as you move on to the next level. You get more points if you buy merchandise from Mars One or if you donate money to the project, which means that you’re basically buying your spot on the team.

So how did Mars One intend to get the $6 billion needed to fund the trip to Mars? With a series of reality shows that presented the entire selection process. Endemol, a TV production company, has announced that it has pulled out of the contract, which leaves Mars One scrambling to gather the money.

Roche stated that he has decided to speak out and let the whole world know that the Mars One selection process was a complete farce. Joseph Roche said that he not only did not meet with anyone from Mars One in person, but that all the interviews were done through Skype. He continued to say that the initial plan was for the contenders to travel to Mars One headquarters and take all the tests and interviews there, but that never materialized.

Roche went on to reveal that:

They made us sign a non-disclosure agreement if we wanted to be interviewed, and then all of a sudden it changed from being a proper regional interview over several days to being a 10-minute Skype call.

Roche’s main worry is that the obvious failure of the Mars One project, as he sees it, is only going to lead people to lose faith in NASA and even scientists. He fears that Mars One could potentially damage the people’s perception of science.

What Now?

Roche’s statements chip away at the whole Mars One mission wall, but they are not enough to tear it down. Naturally, only time will tell if people get to Mars through the Mars One project, but the way the whole mission is shaping up, most likely Mars One will not put men and women on Mars in 2027.

Right now, there are too many unknown factors, too much uncertainty and not enough money for anyone to give a final verdict on Mars One.

At the moment, Mars One has narrowed down its candidates to 100 and it’s planning to get down to 24 of them. They will be offered a job by Mars One, they will be trained and out of the bunch, four finalists will be selected. They will leave Earth and head for Mars in 2027.

Lansdorp knows there are many holes in Mars One’s plans and he says that there are solutions for every problem.

Instagram’s Layout App Takes on Photo Collages

March 25, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

layoutInstagram has just introduced a brand new application called Layout, designed for making and sharing photo collages.

Last year, Instagram released Hyperlapse, an app which took time lapse videos and now it has taken on the popular photo collage. Layout has user-friendly features and analysts believe it is going to be another hit for the social media giant.

Instagram’s Layout is very simple to operate. Instagram knows that its users love taking lots of photos so it made it very easy for Layout users to select the photos they want added to a collage. Layout has three tabs that will help users sort through all of their images: all, faces and recent. The all tab obviously displays all the photos on the user’s phone, the faces tab displays just the photos that have people’s faces and the recent tab is also self-explanatory. What’s cool about the app when choosing photos from the faces tab is the fact that the Layout app automatically centers the image based on where the face is located.

Once you have selected the photos you want to put into your collage, Layout automatically arranges them for you. The best part about Layout is how easy it is to tweak the collage to your taste. You can rearrange the photos in the collage by simply dragging them to the preferred position. You can resize the photos and even make last-minute replacements with the help of the replace tool. There is even a mirror tool and a flip one. The flip will rotate the photo upside down and the mirror function will make your mirror reflection of your photo.

There is also a Photo Booth function that takes a series of up to four selfies and then turns them into a collage. Users should know that the Photo Booth function only works with an iPhone’s from camera, which means that you cannot use flash. The individual photos taken by the Layout app in Photo Booth mode are saved to the camera roll.

Once you’ve finished your collage, you can share it on Facebook or Instagram. There is no Twitter integrated, but thanks to the app automatically saving the collage to your camera roll, you can share it from there.

Whether or not Layout is going to be a hit remains to be seen. Experts believe that Instagram’s backing is going to help the app get more exposure, but there are already many photo collage apps, such as Pic Stitch and PicFrame that have been around for years and have a huge number of users.

What helps Layout and will most definitely make the app stand out among a plethora of photo collage apps is its simplicity. Everything about the features of the app and the experience is simple and highly user-friendly.

While the app is free, at this moment, Instagram’s Layout is only available on iOS. The company said that it plans to release it for Android in the next few months.
