Ara Spiral 2 by Google: New Prototype

January 17, 2015 By Cristopher Hall Leave a Comment

Ara Spiral 2Project Ara, involving the modular phone by Google has captured everyone’s imagination, promising the possibility of customizing your own smartphone to users worldwide. Well, as far as the worldwide part goes, the new smartphone will currently be available only for people in Puerto Rico. However, the Ara Spiral 2 Prototype has been introduced to the public and it is fully functional.

This concept is not yet ready for coming out the market around the world but public tests will begin with this year’s summer. There are no dates or plans on when exactly the new Ara smartphone will hit the markets.

Why Puerto Rico?

The pilot program set in Puerto Rico is meant to offer the necessary data on how to better plan the international launch of the Ara smartphones and the region was not chosen randomly. Google claims that Puerto Rico is the perfect spot for the idea of a modular smartphone mainly because 75% of the internet traffic in Puerto Rico is done through smartphones but many phone users do not actually own a smartphone.

Ara will also be used as a marketing strategy to make more people choose smartphones rather than any other types of phones. Google has signed partnerships with local carriers in the Puerto Rico area, Open mobile and Claro being two of these carriers.

What is Spiral 2?

Ara Spiral 2

Spiral 2 is the fully functional prototype available now but it does not yet have the final hardware version. However, Spiral 2 is way better than the initial Spiral, the prototype having now no troubles in booting and it even has access to a 3G data connection. For the following prototype, Spiral 3, Google announced that they are working on developing a 4G LTE data support.

A modular phone is basically a customizable smartphone with interchanging modules. Google has announced that these modules will consist of the phone screen, speakers, batteries, photo sensors, motion sensors and many more. The ground breaking idea behind this concept is the fact that Google will eventually give users the option to customize their phone to their own needs.

Are you more focused on the camera quality on your smartphone rather than the speaker? Simply choose a bigger camera module with a smaller or no speaker module. This goes on for every function the phone will eventually be capable of.

The head of Project Ara, Paul Eremenko was asked  during a developer conference on Wednesday, if the “endo” which is basically the skeleton of the smartphone where all the modules slide in, is going to be available in different sizes but said that they are trying to keep everything consistent. Ara also raised some questions about security during the above mentions conference but Eremenko said that a set of security guidelines has not yet been released.

What about the price?

Google has yet to release a price for their smartphone. Although they have constantly announced that the smarphone will be available on the lowest price possible, we have yet to see if that is indeed true.

Depending on third party manufacturers and the price of every piece, a price for each and every module is also expected. Of course, the overall price of the smartphone will vary depending on what modules you actually want on your phone, if Google will keep their word on giving us the possibility of choosing what modules you actually want your smartphone to have, before purchasing it.

Ara Spiral 2

Another part of the project which has not yet been worked out is if we are going to be able to switch or swap between different modules. All of this information will most likely be available after the Puerto Rican launch of the Ara smartphone and after analysts will put together all the data they have gathered before and after the release.

Adding and removing modules will supposedly be fairly easy if you know how to do it. Magnets will be used to keep all the modules in place and for you to be able to disengage one of the modules, you will have an app available exactly for that. You will also be able to choose what colors or design you want your modules to be in, making it more aesthetically pleasing.

As Paul Eremenko declared,

“The question was basically, could we do for hardware what Android and other platforms have done for software? Which means lower the barrier to entry to such a degree that you could have tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of developers as opposed to just five or six big manufacturers that could participate in the hardware space.”

Ara Spiral 2

Although there are is no certainty behind it, Google seems to hurry up the launch of the Ara smartphones, considering the modular smartphones an innovation prone to change the way mobile technology is currently going. There are eleven working modules available for the Spiral 2 smartphone and Google plans to make over thirty modules available by the time they will release the Ara smartphone.

Mophie iPhone 6 Case Review

January 16, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Mophie-iPhone-6-Case-2

The Mophie iPhone 6 case will arrive early February or late January. Mophie announced the cases for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus at CES 2015 and they will significantly increase the battery life of your Apple smartphone.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were announced by Apple in September 2014, and even though there are numerous alternatives to Mophie’s iPhone cases, many users still prefer to wait for them to become available.

You can pre-order the cases as of now and there is one iPhone 6 Plus case and two iPhone 6 ones. The Mophie cases will ship in three to about four weeks, in time with Mophie’s commercial in the Super Bowl.

These are the cases that will be available to the public soon:

1. Mophie iPhone 6 Plus Juice Pack, which is for the iPhone 6 Plus and adds 60% more battery for $99
2. Mophie iPhone 6 Juice Pack Air, which is for the iPhone 6 and adds 100% more battery power for $99
3. Mophie iPhone 6 Juice Pack Plus, which is also for the iPhone 6 and adds 120% more battery for $119

All of the cases come in three colors which match Apple’s smartphones. There is a gold, white and black color available for each of them. They are a great upgrade from the previous iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s cases in both features and power.

After we spent some time with all of these cases we can honestly say that these are the kind of battery cases that set the mark for how all battery cases should work because of their amazing features and upgrades from previous versions. Even though they make the iPhone 6 look a little bulky, the extra battery life is worth it and we did find that the case fits pretty comfortably in our hands.

Mophie-iPhone-6-Case-4

The following are features that make the Mophie iPhone 6 cases stand out from the competition and make them the best possible choice for people who wish to get more juice from their smartphone.

Better Cable and USB Port

Mophie-iPhone-6-Case-1

The cases include a much better and cleaner USB port than the one found on the iPhone and will certainly make the device easier to connect to the Micro USB cable. Mophie announced that there is a cable that will help the user know which side goes up when it’s time to charge the device.

Users will still be able to connect their iPhone in a dock as there are contacts on the bottom part of the case. The docks connect using the port at the bottom of the Mophie case so the user doesn’t need to handle any more wires.

A Single Cable for Charge and Sync

Mophie-iPhone-6-Case-3

The biggest complaint about the old Mophie iPhone cases was that people could not sync their iPhones when they were inside the case. That limited more than the possibility of connecting the device to iTunes and people had to remove it and also carry a Micro USB cable for the case and a Lightning cable for the iPhone.

The Mophie iPhone 6 cases, much as the Mophie powerstation plus support charging and syncing the devices with the use of just a single Micro USB cable. This means that users will be able to leave their Lightning cables at home and just bring the one cable.

This also lets cars detect the iPhone as if it were plugged into a Lightning cable. This is crucial for using the case with Apple CarPlay and makes listening to music way easier. We also appreciate that the Mophie iPhone case first charges the iPhone and then the additional battery pack when connected to power.

The technology is available for both the Mophie iPhone 6 Plus case and the Mophie iPhone 6 cases.

Protection

While the case adds 120% to the iPhone battery life, that isn’t the only trick up its sleeve. There is a new impact system inside the case that makes use of bumpers to take in the shocks caused by drops in order of protecting the iPhone 6 from falls and other impacts.

However, this technology is only available in the Mophie iPhone 6 Plus case that costs $119. We didn’t have the chance to test this feature out but similar designs in other cases we’ve tested have worked quite well and we’re confident that Mophie did a great job implementing this sort of system into the case.

The best possible way you can charge your iPhone with these cases attached to it is when your smartphone’s battery is between 20 percent and 80 percent. This will allow you to use the least amount possible of power coming from the case and improve the overall battery life on your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus. If you are able of avoiding using the case to keep the battery life on your iPhone at 100 percent, you will be able to make the power last a lot longer.

It’s very easy and convenient to plug in your iPhone when you just have to use the one Micro USB cable and not have to worry about the Lightning one which can also be very expensive to replace. You may also sync the device with the Micro USB cable and attach it to the Apple CarPlay system while keeping it safe inside the Mophie iPhone 6 or Mophie iPhone 6 Plus case.

Mophie-iPhone-6-Case-5

On the back of the case there is an LED that will show you exactly how much more power you have left and a switch to turn it on or off that will let you charge only your iPhone and not the Mophie battery pack.

5 of the Best Fitness Trackers for 2015

January 15, 2015 By Nancy Young Leave a Comment

Losing weight or getting in shape is a very common new year’s resolution. It’s true that you can hire a personal trainer or get a gym membership to get into shape but this is pretty expensive and there may be an alternative.

Walking is one of the easiest ways that a person could start living a much healthier life and lose weight. It is recommended for adults to receive at least 150 minutes per week of aerobic activity with mild intensity, like walking, by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The sudden explosion of connected devices on the market has made tracking daily activity a lot easier. We have tested a lot of fitness trackers but only a few have impressed us so far. The following is a list of what we think are the best fitness trackers that will help you to keep your new year’s resolution.

1. Misfit Flash

misfit-flash

Misfit Flash is a fitness device that is able to track your steps, the distance travelled and calories burned. Misfit Flash is even capable of tracking sleep and does so automatically and it makes use of a replaceable battery that can last for six months or so.

The fitness tracker can be placed on the wrist or the waist with the help of a clip-on accessory that is included in the package. The app is available for iOS and Android and can even connect with other systems like MapMyFitness, MyFitnessPal and RunKeeper.

However, there are some things you must take into consideration before purchasing a Misfit Flash. The device doesn’t have a display and uses 12 LEDs arranged in the shape of a ring that notify the user and shows the time. The Misfit Flash retails for $50 in the United States, £50 in the United Kingdom and in Australia for around AU$55.

2. Pivotal Tracker 1

pivotal-tracker-1

This is the most affordable tracker we have tested. A company based in Seattle called Pivotal Living is offering the tracker as a yearly subscription plan. The device is only available in the United States and it costs $12, which also includes an app that is compatible with both iOS and Android devices. When your subscription expires you can pay another $12 to access the app for one more year, and so on. You will also be offered a new fitness band by Pivotal Living, free of charge.

The device is able of tracking the distance traveled, steps taken, active time, sleep and calories burned. The battery lasts for around a week and there are alerts to warn you about inactivity, a silent alarm for waking the user in the morning and activity goals that are made available by the bracelet.

A down side, however, is the fact that it is not waterproof and it’s not very accurate when it comes to tracking distances. We also feel the build quality is sort of shabby but this is to be expected because of the very low retail price.

The app is very well designed even though it doesn’t feature a food tracker and the device can’t be synced with other apps. The traffic from these bracelets has also put a great load on the company’s servers and more than one time it has caused problems. People have said that they have experienced reboots, crashes of the app and issues with syncing.

3. Fitbit Charge

fitbit-charge

Fitbit is one of the oldest manufacturers of fitness trackers. Fitbit Charge improves upon the earlier Fitbit Force which was earlier this year recalled because some users reported irritation of the skin when using it. Fitbit Charge features a small OLED screen that can display incoming calls from your smartphone in addition of tracking steps, calories burned, stairs climbed, distance traveled and sleep.

It also features a silent alarm and the user can put in daily goals. The app can also sync with other third-party ones such as RunKeeper and MyFitnessPal. The app is available for iOS and Android. However, Fitbit Charge is a little inaccurate when tracking distance and it’s not waterproof.

The retail price of the Fitbit Charge is $130 in the United States, £100 in the United Kingdom and in Australia it costs AU$150. Fitbit announced that a newer version of the fitness device will be available in 2015 and it seems like their newest version will be worth waiting for. The new Fitbit Charge HR features a heart rate monitor and a watch strap for only $20 extra.

4. Jawbone Up24

jawbone-up24

Jawbone and Fitbit come to mind when thinking of fitness trackers. The Up24 is very difficult to beat. It is able of tracking almost anything – distance, steps, sleep and calories – and a new update improved its battery life and now lasts 14 days. You can set a silent alarm to wake you, alerts that remind you to start moving and activity goals. It is waterproof which means you don’t have to remember to take it off when getting into the shower.

The app, which is available for iOS and Android, is one of the best we’ve ever seen. It’s able to sync with third party apps such as RunKeeper and MyFitnessPal. However, the Jawbone Up24 doesn’t feature a screen on which you can view your progress but the good part is that it’s one of the most stylish fitness trackers currently available. Jawbone Up3 was announced by the company to be available in 2015. The company’s new model will feature a heart rate monitor which most likely will improve sleep and calorie tracking.

The Up24 costs $130 in the United States, £125 in the United Kingdom and in Australia it costs AU$150 but with the newest version coming this year, the Up24 should be purchased only at a discount.

5. Basis Peak

basis-peak

Manufacturers are currently making a lot smarter fitness trackers. These new devices, like the Basis Peak and Microsoft Band aim to help you improve your fitness workout with feedback and coaching.

There isn’t a perfect smart fitness tracker yet but the one that comes close to this is the Basis Peak. This smart device constantly tracks your activity and heart rate. It offers you feedback about your activity and is capable of tracking your sleep automatically. The device almost feels like it’s built especially for you as it offers goals and daily achievements that fit you best.

The battery lasts for up to three days and the device is waterproof. However, the Basis app could be better. It is compatible with iOS and Android but doesn’t sync with other apps and does not track food. The company promised that a future update will allow the device to receive notifications from your smartphone but it’s uncertain when it will be available.

The Basis Peak costs $199 in the United States and £170 in the United Kingdom.

Although most smartwatches these days have the ability to track certain fitness activities we chose not to include them in our list as they are not designed specifically with fitness in mind. Some of them even offer a heart rate monitor and can track distances traveled but are built for another purpose.

However, if you wish to purchase a smartwatch because it is capable of doing a lot more than fitness trackers we recommend that you search for details before buying one because some of them are more capable than others.

Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact Review

January 15, 2015 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

z3-tablet-compact-1

The newest model in the Z series from Sony did not take long to surface as the Xperia Z2 was announced earlier in 2014. Sony has recently launched a series of devices that all go by the name of Z3. There is the Z3 5.2 inch smartphone, the Z3 Compact 4.3 inch and the 8 inch tablet called the Z3 Tablet Compact. This 8 inch device from Sony is a really welcomed addition if you liked the gorgeous 10 inch Z2 Tablet but wish for something more comfortable to use and carry.

The Z3 Tablet Compact, tricky as it may be to pronounce, has a very thin design much like its older brother and is also waterproof. The display has full HD resolution and it runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat. The tablet has a 2.5GHz quad-core CPU and 8MP camera.

So far, it seems like it is a standard Android tablet. However, the Z3 Tablet Compact can also be used as a display for Sony’s PlayStation 4. While the console still does all the work, it will be able to stream the game to the tablet so you could play games such as The Last of Us, Titanfall and Destiny on the Z3 while lying in bed or sitting on the toilet.

Design

z3-tablet-compact-4

The Z3 Tablet Compact looks quite good. The white design looks clean and neat and the device is pretty thin – more specific, it’s 6.4mm thick. The size used by Sony makes the device more pleasant to be looked at in landscape orientation when watching movies because there won’t be any black bars surrounding the video. Its shape also makes it easy to put it in your pocket, even though there is some unused space on the top and on the bottom of the tablet that may make the device a little uncomfortable to hold in your jeans.

Like the previous model, the Z3 Tablet Compact is entirely waterproof. This, above anything else, will keep your tablet safe from any spills while sitting on the coffee table in your living room. This also means that you won’t have to worry when taking the tablet with you when taking a long, relaxing, bubble bath and browse through Netflix or Facebook without having to worry what happens if you drop your tablet in the water.

The tablet has a 3.5mm jack for headphones, a charging port, which is behind a waterproof flap positioned on the bottom of the device and a microSD card, which is also hidden behind a waterproof flap on the side of the tablet. There’s also room for a SIM card next to the micro SD card slot but only if you pay for the 4G capable model.

The Z3 Compact Tablet, as its brothers in the same series, has some rough edges which are only slightly softened on its sides and corners. And while other tablet manufacturers may choose to use their imagination to combine textures and colors, Sony prefers to keep the device looking classy and use steel guards to protect the device rather than make it dazzle. But this doesn’t mean Sony didn’t put any thought into the design.

However, there is a downside for being this light and thin. When you pick up the device you will have the sensation that it’s a little too delicate but the build quality is definitely good. I don’t believe there is someone out there that would rather sacrifice weight and size for it to be sturdier than it already is. Keep in mind the device is waterproof so this mean Sony did not just throw together some pieces of plastic mindlessly.

Display

z3-tablet-compact-5

The tablet’s 8 inch display is full HD, which means it has a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080. This means that Sony’s tablet has a smaller resolution than that of Apple’s retina display found on the iPad Mini or on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S. The full HD resolution is more commonly found on smartphones than on tablets of this size, some smartphones such as the LG G3 having a bigger resolution than full HD with 2,560 x 1,440. You may think the resolution is discouraging but the display looks very good and it’s difficult to see major differences between the Z3’s display and the iPad Mini display.

Text and icons look very crisp and sharp and all high resolution images we’ve tested looked great on the screen. This is partially possible because of the screen’s amazing brightness and the very vivid colors. Viewing angles are pretty good as well, so if you have a few friends around you watching a video on YouTube there will be no problem. The screen also performs amazingly well in direct sunlight.

Overall it is a very good screen and the strong colors make it perfect for watching movies and videos. While we do not consider the screen to be of low resolution, it would have been nice if Sony coughed up a couple of more pixels to compete with other tablet giants.

Audio

We didn’t expect much from the stereo speakers on the tablet. The only evidence that they exist are two missing pieces of plastic below and above the glass of the display and we wouldn’t necessarily say that they look very functional. Given our low expectations, however, it was inevitable that we were pleasantly surprised by the sound quality. The sound is very well defined and the speakers have a lot more volume than you would expect. But at around 75 percent, the audio loses all quality and is replaced by a very annoying distortion while the whole tablet starts to vibrate. The speakers could be a lot better and some bass would have been nice but there are also a lot worse ways in which you could watch a show in the comfort of your bed.

Through headphones, the audio is amazingly crisp and well balanced with great bass. There are a lot of things working in the background to ensure the best possible audio quality such as an audio up scaling engine and the Z3 Tablet Compact also supports numerous high resolution audio formats.

Software

z3-tablet-compact-6

The device uses Android 4.4.4 KitKat, over which the same interface Sony uses for its phones can be found. It’s very simple to use and some tweaks such as a menu sitting right next to the app tray will let the user reorganize all apps. But the interface sort of looks almost too cartoony and colorful for the tablet’s design. Sony also said the device will support Android 5.0 Lollipop in early 2015.

Sony loaded the tablet’s interface with a lot of extras, which, sadly, not all of them are welcome. There are a couple of good choices, such as the PlayStation 4 link, for instance, but most of the extra apps are unnecessary. You will find apps from AVG, Kobo and Garmin that come preinstalled on the device and more than a few Sony apps that seem rather useless.

That and all the widgets on the home screen make the device seem messy even before you’ve started to install your own apps of choice. Thankfully, most of the software that comes with the tablet can be uninstalled as well as the widgets. We suggest you do so before actually starting to use the tablet as they will be very annoying from the very start.

There are some features on the tablet that are pretty awesome. The function that lets the user record the screen is pretty cool even though you probably won’t use it that often. Also, the PlayStation 4 Remote Play is quite awesome. This function lets you use your tablet as a wireless screen for your Sony console if both of them are connected on the same WiFi. The smartphones in the series are also capable of doing this but seeing how the tablet has a bigger screen it feels much more at home on it.

PlayStation 4 Remote Play

The PlayStation 4 still does all the hard work but it streams the video output to the Z3, letting you play games on the screen of the tablet while the TV is free to be used for other things. The main point is that you can continue to play your game if your significant other or anyone else wants to watch TV or when you sit on the toilet.

The feature is quite impressive and easy to set up. The PS4 Link app will search for the console in the same network the tablet is connected to and you will be able to play your games the same as on the TV.

The frame rate dropped a few times while playing The Last of Us and the game did freeze a couple of times. And while in slower parts of the game it is possible to ignore these things, in combat or more action packed segments of the game, these downsides will definitely ruin the game experience. In its defense, the app is still in the early days and Sony didn’t have enough time to polish the product, so there is a possibility the app will work better and be more stable in the future.

We don’t recommend you to purchase the tablet if you’re interested in this function alone, but if you own a PS4 and are searching for a tablet to buy, it’s definitely a reason to consider it over other Android devices.

Camera

z3-tablet-compact-3

The 8MP camera on the rear side of the tablet is quite a step back from the 20.7MP camera available on Z3 smartphones. We understand that tablet manufacturers don’t see the camera as a priority but it’s unacceptable for Sony to allow such a poor camera on its tablet, especially when you have to pay around $500 for the device. There is no flash on the camera, and is only suitable for quick snaps of your cat doing something cute when you don’t have anything else within reach. The 2MP front facing camera is fine, and nothing more, for video calls and really terrible selfies, as long as you stand in good light.

Performance and Battery Life

The Z3 Tablet Compact has a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad core CPU and 3GB RAM which proved to be more than enough in our tests. It is still easy and fast to navigate despite the numerous unnecessary software preinstalled. Web browsing was fast and all apps worked without any hiccups.

Netflix high definition streaming was handled very well and more demanding games such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Asphalt 8 ran just fine. In Quadrant benchmark, the Z3 Tablet Compact scored pretty much the same as the Xperia Z3 smartphone with 19,887. The Sony Xperia Z3 smartphone scored a slightly higher 20,425. All in all, the device has enough power to handle anything you want.

Sony put a 4,500mAh battery inside the tablet and it kept going for just under 13 hours on a video-loop test. Even though the iPad Mini 2 achieved lasted for just under 14 hours on the exact same test, it’s still pretty impressive, considering the tablet’s size and power. But for how long the battery lasts is entirely up to you.

If you use it as a replacement for your laptop or play games on it all day long, you will definitely need to recharge it at night. If you use it to casually browse the web and occasionally watch Netflix videos on it – a full charge once every other day will likely be enough.

Wrapping up…

PROS

– The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is very powerful for how slim it is

– Good quality display

– Waterproof

– The function that allows the tablet to work as a screen for the PlayStation 4 is a great addition, despite having some flaws

CONS

– The interface is full of bloatware and it looks quite cluttered even before you install the first app

– A higher resolution display would have been nice

Verdict

The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact’s waterproof body, thickness, screen and power make it worth taking into consideration when looking to purchase an Android tablet. Even though its resolution isn’t above or even on par with other tablets, the ability to play the games on your PlayStation 4 on it makes it unique, even if the function is still far from being perfect.

The Weirdest and Worst Inventions at CES 2015

January 14, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

The International Consumer Electronics Show, or CES as it is widely known, is a tech and electronics trade show where major companies come to show off their newest inventions to the world. Sometimes those inventions and innovations end up being amazing and also amazingly useful, as you can see in our top gadgets from CES 2015, but other times, companies would come up with products that leave us scratching our head and wondering what on Earth they were thinking. Keep in mind that this year, there were more than 20,000 products on display, so it was quite tough choosing. Here are the weirdest and worst inventions that CES 2015 brought forth, so prepare yourselves!

Sony Walkman NW-ZX2sony walkman

Yes, Sony came out with a Walkman at the CES 2015, but it’s no ordinary Walkman. It’s a bulky, and quite expensive Walkman that can play high resolution audio playback. If we had to express an opinion about it, we would say that it’s unnecessary and that there aren’t enough people in the world who are passionate about hi-res sound in order to keep this product alive.

InMotion V3 Electric Unicycleinmotion

The InMotion V3 Electric Uncyle just seems like an accident waiting to happen. Why would anyone want to make an electric unicycle is beyond us?! Aside from the fact that it take a lot of practice to be able to ride it, it’s also quite expensive and saying that we’re not seeing a market for it would be the understatement of the day.

LuminetteLuminette

Luminette has a great idea behind it: it offers light therapy to all those people who are affected by the lack of light during the colder seasons. It is meant to help increase energy levels and it does it by regulating internal rhythms. Sounds great, we know, but the device itself is bulky and unappealing. They should have put more thought into designing it!

Communication Androidcommunication android

Tech fans love robots, but this year at the CES 2015 there were so many that you felt a little bit uneasy, especially around this humanoid. Her voice was freaky and her stare was nightmare material. We would not want this android in our homes, no sir!

InBodyinbody band

InBody is a health bracelet that tell your body fat percentage, body water balance and segmental muscle distribution. It’s a pretty advanced device, but the charts it puts out are so complex, that it is definitely going to put off many people off it. Unfortunately, the average consumer wants smart and easy gadgets and InBody is just smart. Really smart!

OkuOku

Oku is a personal skin scanning device that can be hooked up to your iPhone and see the damage done to your skin by the sun. Oku shared its premise with us: You wear a device to track your steps, sleep and heart rate. What if you had something that could track your skin health and help you develop a customized anti-aging regimen and motivate you to stay on track?

Bluetooth Air2 Speakerfloating bluetooth speakers

These Bluetooth speakers are quite good, but that’s not what sets them apart from your standard Bluetooth speakers. What’s so cool about them is that they can levitate. With the help of repelling magnets, the smaller speaker floats above the larger one while it is playing music. Pretty awesome, we know, but we think it’s one feature you’re going to get tired of quite quickly.

Breo Dream3 Head and Eye Massagerbreo 4

A head and eye massager is the last need anyone on this planet needs. But that didn’t stop Breo from making this expensive device which uses vibration and compressed air to massage the wearer’s head, eyes and neck. We’ve gathered that the device gives rough massages! Ouch!

Innerlyinnerly

Innerly is a smart pendant whose purpose is to help consumers relax and take back control of their lives. This device will record your voice and all you need to do is press a little button; the memos are then sent to app where you can add photos and text. The thing that makes this device pretty useless is the lack of a camera. If you want to record a memo, why not just use your smartphone?!

Brother’s The Dream Machinedream machine

You can’t look at this machine and not be amazed by it. It is a smart sewing machine that has an HD display, useful for making embroidery plans. It would make such a cool gift for any DYI enthusiast, until you look at the price. Brother’s The Dream Machine is $15,000! Can you really think of anyone you know who would shell out $15,000 for a sewing machine? Neither could we.

Grush Gaming Toothbrushthegrush

The Grush is a smart toothbrush that can be connected to a smartphone and with the help of sensors, it mimics their brushing technique and incorporates it into an interactive game. While the idea behind this contraption is quite a nice one (encouraging children to brush their teeth), it does send out the wrong message.

Swissvoice L7 Telephoneswiss voice l7 phone

Are you tired of your smartphone giving you all the information you needed in a matter of seconds? Are you upset with the fact that you can be connected at all times with the help of a pocket-sized phone? Swissvoice has heard your desperate cry for help and it is giving you  the best of the seventies to home phone in 2015. That’s right, it’s an old-school phone! Good luck with that, Swissvoice!

Robo-Rump Shakerrobo rump shaker

We couldn’t believe our own eyes when we saw this contraption! Hey Robo-Rump Shaker, the 40’s called and they want their gadget back! Do people still believe that shaking your jiggly bits will cause you to lose weight? Even though similar machines have been making a comeback every decade or so, we have faith that this one won’t catch on. Or at least we strongly believe that it won’t and that people have smartened up by now about this type of workout.

7 Best Smartphones Worth Buying in 2015

January 13, 2015 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

This is our review of the best smartphones currently on market. Keep in mind that these are the opinions of people who use them; we just made a list of the most common positive and negative aspects about these devices.

We made this list in order to give you some information about smartphones before deciding which one to buy.

1. HTC One M8

htc-one-m8

In our research, most people have rated this device with a 4 or a 5 out of a possible 5. The result, therefore, is averaged at 4.5. This smartphone performs amazingly well in some areas such as design but not so great in others such as the resolution of the camera.

One of the first things that come to mind when you see the M8 is that it’s extremely beautiful and has a solid and great metal casing. This is one of the reasons it is appreciated by its users and is what makes this smartphone stand out from the crowd.

The M8’s battery life is said to be better than the previous generation and most people who use the device seem to be happy with it even though there are some people that say the battery life could have been even better. Almost everyone is happy with the specs of the M8, software, display and performance and users tend to believe its price is quite reasonable. Another great feature is that the mobile phone supports a 128GB memory card.

The 4MP camera takes rather good pictures in darker environments and performs well with appropriate lighting. However, the low resolution is not something to be ignored and everybody agrees that it’s one of the lowest points in the M8.

The BoomSound speakers are also an important known feature of the HTC One mobile phones and it is certainly something that no other smartphone can beat at the moment. Even though almost everyone is pleased by the sound quality coming from the speakers, not all users are happy of how big they are.

Some people see the M8, however, as a step back in design quality from the M7 and argue that the smartphone would have been a lot better if it had more than 16GB internal storage.

2. Motorola Moto X

motorola-moto-x

The Motorola Moto X has some features that make it great and was able to score 4.6 out of 5.

It seems that one of the most appreciated features of the Moto X is its rendition of Android OS that seems to be very close to stock. This helps the performance, as well. Even though the processor found in this smartphone is a little old, a lot of people are happy with its performance and how the smartphone can handle almost everything without any form of lag.

Another appreciated fact about the Moto X is its design and how comfortable it is in the hand. Because it has a 4.7 inch screen, the Moto X can be held without problems in just one hand and people also seem to like the AMOLED display.

Even though the Moto X was pretty expensive when it came out last year, this year the device can be pretty affordable.

The quality of the camera, however, seems to be the biggest problem, according to users of the Moto X. The camera that is found on the Moto X is not the same quality as the cameras found on different competitors. Also, the battery life seems to be a little disappointing and another downside is the fact that the device doesn’t support microSD and doesn’t have much storage space.

Some users from certain countries also criticized that the Moto Maker isn’t available in their locations.

3. LG G3

lg-g3

Even though it didn’t score as high as others, the LG G3 is still a pretty important smartphone. The LG G3 scored 4.3 out of 5. Even though the phone is appreciated in most of the cases, it does have some quirks that some people do not enjoy.

One of the most talked about features of the LG G3 is its display of 1440p which looks amazing. People who own the device also seem to be happy about the performance and specs of the LG G3. Many users seem to like the phone’s design and describe it as being compact as the device has very thin bezels. The camera also seems to be good although there are certain issues affecting it also.

The biggest complaint regarding the G3 is its battery life. The resolution of the display in combination with the GPU that sometimes can’t really handle it very efficiently makes the battery life quite short. The resolution of the display seems to make many complain that the device gets rather hot when watching videos or playing games.

The camera doesn’t snap great quality photos in darker environments and one other flaw seems to be the fact that it is rather slow to react. Some like the features offered on the LG G3 but some people feel they are somewhat heavy and unpolished.

4. Samsung Galaxy S5

samsung-galaxy-s5

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has received a score of 3.9 out of a possible 5. This seems to be one of the most controversial smartphones out there. Some people seem to hate the device while others seem to love a couple of features on it and hate others and some just plain love everything about it.

Most users seem to appreciate the battery life of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the display. The screen is said to work very well both outdoors and indoors. Compared to previous generations, the camera seems to have improved a lot and many people are happy that Samsung worked on it. People seem to really like that the device is waterproof, also.

However, it’s not all roses and one of the most complained about feature is the interface called TouchWiz. People also seem to be unhappy with the software Samsung decided to cram into the device as it really slows the smartphone down, even though the Samsung Galaxy S5 had some of the best specs when it initially launched. The software may also lead the device to overheat even when used just for the basic things. Also, some of the Galaxy S5’s features don’t work as they are intended to such as the fingerprint scanner and IR blaster.

Some users really like the design of the Samsung Galaxy S5 but some think the design is quite boring and old.

5. Samsung Galaxy Note 4

samsung-galaxy-note-4

The Samsung Galaxy Notes are usually well received and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 got a score of 4.5 out of 5.

The most important Note 4 features are the display that boasts a quad-HD resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 and is Super AMOLED, the S Pen and great performance. Owners of the Note 4 claim that the S Pen is more natural to use and better than the one found on previous generations.

Cameras found on Samsung smartphones are good most of the times but it look like Samsung outdid themselves with the Note 4 camera. Most users were surprised with the quality of the camera which makes the gap between DSLRs and smartphone cameras seem a lot smaller. The battery life is also great with some users reporting that it even lasts for a couple of days when the device is moderately used.

Even though Samsung smartphones don’t have the best build materials some users say that the Note 4 is a lot better than previous generations.

The biggest down point of the device is the interface known as TouchWiz which has been described as being heavy. The Note 4 also comes with a lot of preinstalled software that eat up both storage space and RAM. Some users wish that Samsung would have put 64GB of storage in their phablet so they would have more space for apps. The 4K recordings the device is capable of doing can also fill pretty fast the internal storage on the device.

Another low point is the price of the device but users are willing to pay the extra money for the device.

6. iPhone 6

iphone-6

Even though it’s probably the most known smartphone in the world and is produced by one of the most important tech company the iPhone 6 only received a score of 3.3 out of 5. Some people love the device because of how easy the iPhone 6 can be used and some people hate it because it doesn’t have very powerful features.

The most important point in favor of the smartphone is the camera. The camera was already great in previous generations but Apple outdid itself with the camera found in the iPhone 6. Many users love the quality of the screen and how well the device performs. The Touch ID also seems to be one of the best features on the device not just because it is a great fingerprint scanner but because it does what it’s built to do, when compared with other such devices that have the same feature. The design of the iPhone 6 seems to have gone down a little since the 5s but the device feels great in the hand and is very thin.

Many users don’t enjoy the restriction Apple imposes on its devices and because they are forced into using iTunes, software that is hated universally. As for hardware, the iPhone 6 doesn’t really lack but some people are disappointed and angry that Apple still decided to put only 1GB of RAM in the smartphone.

The camera protrusion from the rest of the body is also an annoyance for many users, despite the phone looking quite good. Some users also say that the battery life could be better and others wish the iPhone 6, like the iPhone 6 plus would have optical image stabilization and a 1080p display.

7. iPhone 6 Plus

iphone-6-plus

The iPhone 6 Plus received an even lower score than its brother, of just 3.2 out of 5. The main reason for this seems to be its size.

The favorite features found on the iPhone 6 Plus are the camera, how slim the device is, a wide variety of apps to choose from, the slow motion video capabilities and the performance of the CPU. The optical image stabilization also seems to be appreciated by the users of the smartphone as well as the 1080p display.

Many issues still plague the device, however, such as the bugs in iOS 8, a very limited app store and restricted functionality. The biggest problem with the device seems to be the size which many people have said that makes the device really uncomfortable to hold. It could have been easier to hold if Apple would have put smaller bezels on the iPhone 6 Plus. Some users dislike the fact that Apple uses its proprietary hardware and software and hate the charger for not being standard.

There you have it. This was our list of the best smartphones out there. We hope we helped you in making a decision of which smartphone to buy.

iOS 8.1.3 The Update We’ve All Been Waiting For – Rumor Roundup

January 13, 2015 By Deborah Campbell Leave a Comment

ios 8.1.3

iOS 8.1.3 is coming our way and rumors are saying that it’s going to become available to all users somewhere at the end of this week or at the beginning of the next week. When exactly that’s going to happen, we don’t know, because Apple does not confirm or infirm any rumors. Today we’re going to take a look at the rumors that have been circulating online and we’re going to discuss when exactly the iOS 8.1.3 update is going to happen. We’re also going to take a look at some reasons why you should upgrade and at some reasons why you shouldn’t.

iOS 8 was an eagerly awaited operating system update from Apple. It was launched to the public on September 17, 2014 and it featured some massive changes to the interface. The Notification Center was completely overhauled, making it much easier for users to rely to texts and mails. Also, iOS 8 saw the introduction of widgets, which expanded it capabilities tremendously.

But iOS 8 also had some bug issues, bugs and problems. It was the most plagued operating system from Apple to date. At one point thousands of people couldn’t make phone calls and Apple had to pull an all-nighter just to release an update the following day to fix that issue. It was also the first time when Apple allowed a rollback, which gave people the possibility to roll back to a previous version of the operating system.

The iOS 8.1.2 fixed most of the bugs, but it is far from being perfect. It is because of this that we believe Apple is eager to move on to the next level and by that we mean iOS 8.2 or even iOS 9. Just like Microsoft has done with Windows 9, which never came after the massive disappointment that was Windows 8. Instead, the tech giant released Windows 10 in hopes it would distance itself from the flop.

iOS 8.1.3 – When and What

Apple is believed and expected to release and slowly roll out its latest update to their operating system, iOS 8.1.3 at the end of this week or at the beginning of the next one. The release of iOS 8.1.3 is aimed at fixing little issues ahead of the bigger and more important iOS 8.2 update, which is going to take place somewhere in the following months.

BGR reported the following:

We’ve been told that Apple is planning on releasing an iOS 8 software update sometime next week. Whether it’s a beta seed or a public release, our source couldn’t confirm, but the company is currently planning on making a move around Tuesday or Wednesday.

There is another piece of clear information, rather than just a rumor, that is pointing at a release of iOS 8.1.3 in the coming days: it appears that there was a spike of web traffic that came from devices running iOS 8.1.3 on Apple’s networks. Some believe that this is proof that the update was made available to some select employees last week. This can only mean that Apple is getting ready to release the iOS update.

Another clue that might point towards the release of iOS 8.1.3 and not the bigger iOS 8.2 is the fact that Apple doesn’t beta test the smaller releases. Our advice is to keep an eye out in your Settings icon to notice if a notification pops up.

Plenty of people were put off by iOS 8, with its issues and people have been quite reserved about upgrading. According to Apple, the latest operating system, iOS 8 is installed on 63% of active iOS devices. This figure is slowly rising, thanks to people giving in and upgrading their devices or simply buying new ones that are already running iOS 8.

Update to iOS 8.1.3 or Not?

This question is on everybody’s mind! Naturally, it is up to you whether you update or not, but you should know a few things before going ahead and downloading and updating the operating system of your Apple device.

  • If you are still using an iPhone 4s or iPhone 5, an update is probably going to slow your iPhone down, which is going to be quite terrible. Because Apple doesn’t allow any rollbacks, it means that you’re stuck with the new operating system update for eternity.
  • If you are using a jailbroken phone, then updating will erase the jailbreak and you’re not going to be able to use your phone the way you used to in the past. If Apple releases iOS 8.1.3, then you’re probably going to be able to jailbreak it again, but if they release iOS 9, there is no change a jail break is going to be available soon.
  • Also, we don’t know what issues the operating system update is going to fix, or what problems it is going to create. So, before rushing ahead and updating, we recommend you wait a couple of days and keep an eye online and see what folks have to say about the update. If the feedback is good, then you can go ahead and update, although you never know if your experience is going to match other people’s experience.

iOS 9 – Could We Get That Instead of iOS 8.1.3 or iOS 8.2?

There have been some very recent rumors that were saying that Apple wasn’t going to continue updating their iOS 8 and that it was going to jump straight to iOS 9 and release it in the near future. While there is some little bit of information online that is pointing into this direction, we’re a bit reserved when it comes to expecting that the next iOS release is going to be iOS 9.

Final Thoughts

Well, one thing’s for sure: iOS 8.1.3 is going to come before Apple Watches and iOS 8.2, which is most likely going to happen this week. So get ready to either download it or avoid it as much as you possibly can. It’s up to you if you update or not!

Qualcomm Connected House Impressions

January 13, 2015 By Roxanne Briean Leave a Comment

We have been teased with a concept of a smart home or connected home for many years now. This year’s edition of CES revealed that a connected home is more of a reality than ever before. Qualcomm has revealed its smart home and showed just how technology is able to impact the way we live our lives. However, this year, the focus was on things people can buy separately; install them in their homes and how we can make use of them in our day to day lives.

Home can be much more when it is connected. Kids spend time on tablets, the adults spend their time on computers while everyone uses a smartphone. Our activities revolve around playing games, surfing the Web, watching movies and listening to music. There are five or more devices that are connected in our homes these days but in the future that number could rise to 50 or even more than that. Qualcomm asks what’s the use of so many smart devices when there is not a smart network capable of bringing together all of them.

Qualcomm networking claims to be able to make your home more digital, smarter and a lot more connected. From Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Powerline that are able of handling media traffic, to hybrid networks and small cells that are able of maximizing flexibility and performance, Qualcomm’s connected home is supposed to redefine how and where we live so we can enjoy a better lifestyle.

Connected-Home-1

Qualcomm Connected House is proof that the future is now. The front door “speaks” to the smoke alarms inside the house and lights flash when you leave the fridge door open. Everything inside the house can be controlled remotely with a smartphone and is linked together.

Some interesting features include a smart lock that unlocks the door when someone who lives in the house is near it. Smart TVs inside the house warn parents when their children are surfing the internet when they are supposed to be sleeping and a system allows the users to set all the clocks inside the house with just one touch of a button.

All the products Qualcomm uses in its house can also be bought separately and are developed by Qualcomm and other companies. All of these devices run the AllJoyn Software which is an open source project initiated in 2011 by Qualcomm. It lets devices using the software to communicate between each other. Qualcomm partnered with numerous other companies to create more smart devices for the house and to develop the software even further.

Events are triggered when the user performs actions within the house. For example, if a person opens the door on the fridge an event will be triggered and lights will flash or a sound will be heard.

august_lock

In the front door of the house the August smart lock can be found. The lock works by sensing the August app on the home owner’s tablet or smartphone. In order for the lock to be opened, a person with a code must approach the door with Bluetooth enabled on their tablet or smartphone and access the address from the August app. The lock verifies the identity of the user via Bluetooth and allows him or her access inside the house. Red lights on the front panel of the smart lock will turn green and the device will open the door by unlocking it. In order of having access to another person’s home, the home owner must send you an invitation via Facebook or using the address book.

CES 2015 proved that we’re all already living inside the connected dream. Numerous new products presented at CES 2015 were improvements on previous ones. One of our favorite things from CES 2015 regarding a connected home was Parrot Pot. Parrot Pot uses the concept of the Flower Power sensor and improved it by developing a flower pot that is able of keeping someone’s plants alive without them having to worry about when and how much to water them.

Another interesting device was the Misfit Bolt. There is nothing new about smart light bulbs but Misfit Bolt significantly lowered how much the these kinds of products cost and made it a lot easier for everyone to install such things into their own home. D-Link and Honeywell had their share of the spotlight and many other companies besides them presented a series of sensors, hubs and cameras that are able to make our homes smarter.

Smart homes have been dreamed about for years now and they have even been present in entertainment from anywhere between the McFly home in Back to the Future to one of the Halloween specials in The Simpsons. Qualcomm and other companies seem to bring the dream closer to reality and we can’t wait to see if the future will find us living in such homes or at least using some of these devices separately.

Top 10 Best iPhone and iPad Games in 2015

January 12, 2015 By Nancy Young 1 Comment

Other than making calls, watching videos, browsing the web and others, the iPad and iPhones are great gaming machines as well. Some of the games found on these devices are truly amazing and innovative so we assembled a list of some of the best iPhone and iPad games you could enjoy at this very moment. Below you will find a top 10, of what we believe are some of the best iPhone and iPad Games.

10. Monument Valley

Top 10 Best iPhone and iPad Games in 2015

This is a very relaxing game that you could play on the go. While it only lasts around an hour we can honestly say to you that it will be an amazing hour. The game revolves around an Escher style world and the player must rotate and flip pieces of puzzles that will allow princess Ida to safely travel through mysterious and hauntingly beautiful structures.

Monument Valley seems to be a combination of games such as The Unfinished Swan, Journey and Fez all while staying true to an original art style. This game will be an amazing match for anyone searching for a fun, memorable and unique experience and who likes truly relaxing games.

That being said, the game probably won’t appeal to those that wish for a long and challenging game. Monument Valley is pretty short and linear.

Price: $3.99

9. Kingdom Rush

Top 10 Best iPhone and iPad Games in 2015 2

This is a great tower defense game. We know there are a lot of them on the App Store but this particular game was the first one to make use of a cartoon style design which made identifying units a walk in the park and also makes the game eye-candy.

The playable app also offers upgrades which the player can use from one session to another, meaning that the player will constantly receive rewards when playing. This is a great way of making a game that will be played and enjoyed for a long time. It is pretty hit or miss, however. If you enjoy upgrades, the game is right up your alley.

You can level up pretty much anything in it, from structures, spells and more. So if you enjoy leveling up and constantly receiving upgrades, this is the game for you. People who wish to enjoy a good strategy game in quiet will be disappointed to discover that the characters in the game yell out silly catchphrases that get tiresome pretty much immediately.

Price: $2.99

8. The Room Two

Top 10 Best iPhone and iPad Games in 2015 3

While this may not be the second installment to the game based on the popular movie ‘The Room’ by Tommy Wiseau (how cool would that be? Not very, actually…) and it is pretty amazing.

The puzzles in The Room Two are smart and addictive, and developer Fireproof has made a great job of implementing amazing controls into their Room games. You can easily zoom and flick through the numerous and amazingly designed contraptions in the game. Other than having great puzzles, The Room Two also offers an amazing and chilling atmosphere and the player will often be amazed by the sheer creepiness of the game.

It hits the right spot in people who enjoy puzzle games, fans on the game ‘Myst’, occultists, collectors and people who enjoy machinery but it’s not so good for players that don’t have a lot of patience, those looking for an action packed game and also people who wish Lisa didn’t tear Johnny apart.

Price: $2.99

7. SpellTower

Top 10 Best iPhone and iPad Games in 2015 5

Word games have sprung up in the App Store like snails after rain. SpellTower, however, stands apart from the bunch for having a different spin on the word-find game. Verbs, nouns and different parts of speech appear in a vertical grid inside and every move the player makes shifts the board of the game. This is a great match for people who enjoy ‘Scrabble’.

SpellTower feels a lot less like you are limited by the letters you have in front of you and more like a battle between the player and the board game. But the app has its limitations, meaning that you will more than once be frustrated by black squares on the board game and the words that require an exact number of letters in order for the player to use a specific letter.

Price: $1.99

6. XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Top 10 Best iPhone and iPad Games in 2015 6

This is living proof that a game released in 2012 can be just as amazing as it was in 1994. This new XCOM game offers graphical improvements and adjustments to the interface like it is to be expected from every remake but what is truly remarkable about the game is just how the player is attached to the soldiers and battles controlled by him or her. Controls are also top notch, sliding is used to control the camera, pinch is used to zoom in or out and tapping the screen or double tapping it is used for commands and movement.

They truly feel right at home on your iPhone or iPad screen and you don’t feel like the developers sacrificed anything in the game in order to make them work. It is a great choice for people who enjoy deep, engaging strategy games, the importance of making use of cover in a battle and smart deployment and management.

It’s not so good for people who wish to play a game in small skirmish battles, as the battles in XCOM may last more than one might expect. And because the battles require the player to constantly take matters into his or hers own hands, the player is pretty much glued to the screen for the whole time.

Price: $12.99

5. Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

Top 10 Best iPhone and iPad Games in 2015 7

This new card game from Blizzard is a lot like Magic: The Gathering in many ways, even though it is a lot easier to get into and a lot more addictive. Hearthstone is another one of those games that was initially on PCs but played like it was intended for tablets. After a couple of hours spent with the game, the player will begin making her or his own decks and challenge strangers and friends alike.

All matches are over in a few minutes which makes the game accessible. Even though, at some point, the player may be tempted to pay for random booster card packs, the user can spend a lot of time within the game without paying a single dime.

It’s a good match for people who enjoy Blizzard games, Magic: The Gathering and anyone, actually, who is searching for a fun and free online experience. People who don’t wish to pay extra won’t enjoy the game because while the game does a great job of pairing you with players that have the similar level as you do, if you want a deck filled with powerful and rare cards you will have to cough up some money.

4. République

Top 10 Best iPhone and iPad Games in 2015 8

This amazing game developed by Camouflaj is cut up in more episodes and is full of surveillance and stealth action and we gladly recommend it mostly because of how well the game uses touch screen controls for stealth (which is known to require very precise controls).

If you ever wished to jump into surveillance cameras from a dystopian military school in order to help a woman find her way out, this is the kind of game you will definitely enjoy. It is a great fit for fans of stealth games, people who enjoy innovative and unique adventures, those searching for a very amazing experience based on story and voyeurs. République might not look very interesting, however, to people who are fans of action games and people who enjoy quick rounds of gameplay..

Price: $4.99

3. Infinity Blade III

Top 10 Best iPhone and iPad Games in 2015 9

This is definitely an example of how games should be on the iPhone and iPad. The iOS playable app from Chair Entertainment is on the third installment and has evolved over the years from a mindless slashing game filled with gorgeous graphics to a slashing game that is filled with an amazingly fulfilling story, crafting, an additional character that is playable and skill perks.

This is an amazing example of how every game that takes itself seriously should evolve. It will be right at home for anyone who enjoys playing games on consoles because Infinity Blade is an amazing graphical achievement and is a serious example of how touch controls should work. Infinity Blade III is one of the few games to fully take advantage of the newest generation of iDevices and it shouldn’t be ignored.

However, for fans of casual games, Infinity Blade III may not be enough. While it has been diversified over the years, the game did not change the level of challenge it imposes on the player. Infinity Blade III will test your reflexes, patience and perception.

Price: $6.99

2. FTL: Faster Than Light

Top 10 Best iPhone and iPad Games in 2015 10

FTL: Faster Than Light answers the question “what would I do If I were to be a captain of a starship?” But be sure to be prepared for the answer as most likely you would make a very lousy captain. You take control of a small spaceship in the game and every command is at the tip of your fingers.

You will have to assign your crew with tasks, adjust the power systems and target pirate spaceships. It’s as if the game was designed with touch controls in mind. The mobile version of the game is just as good, if not better, as it was on the PC. You will take control of your ship and battle it throughout different regions of space.

It’s right up the alley for people who enjoy simulators and games that are challenging and for every fan of Star Trek or Firefly. However, we do not recommend the game to people who wish to play a very casual game, those who are keen on winning and people who don’t like challenges that have been generated randomly and may sometimes feel unfair.

Price: $9.99

1. The Walking Dead

the-walking-dead

A zombie apocalypse would surely be a terrible thing. Most likely every choice we’d take if we were to survive a zombie apocalypse would be the wrong one and we’d turn on each other pretty quickly. The critically acclaimed game ‘The Walking Dead’ is most likely familiar to any gamer out there but the game feels as if it was specially designed for touch screens.

This is a good time to get the playable app and enjoy it if you haven’t already done this. It feels like a comic book in which you have to take a series of very tough decisions. This is a great game for fans of the comic books and of adventure games. It’s also a good choice for fans of the TV show but who believe the characters and story could be better.

People who are searching a very coherent game full of action won’t appreciate it as much, however. Also, the game is not recommended for those who get scared easily.

The GoPro Hero 4 Takes it Up A Notch

GoPros have gained more and more ground in the past few years, giving a new feel to video recording on the move and capturing dynamism in the most personal manner. Over the years, the GoPro series hasn’t seen much change to the general idea that the original device brought to the market. However, with the release of the GoPro Hero4 family – Black, Silver and White – in October 2014, this has changed quite a bit.

The Hero4 family consists of the three different models mentioned above, with performance and price differences between them – the Black version is the top specification model while the White version comes at the cheapest price you can get as far as GoPros go. All of the models can host microSD cards – the Black and Silver versions can hold cards of up to 64 GB of space, while the White model can only support cards that go up to 32 GB.

Main Features for the GoPro Hero 4

Some changes that have arrived for all of the Hero4 products are the addition of both WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity in their construction and finally, better battery life and housing. The physical design of the cameras is a little stronger as well, having got rid of the difficult to deal with back doors now sporting a spring-based mechanism for opening them.

Dimension-wise, there is no change whatsoever in the size or weight of the Hero4 models in comparison to the older Hero3. So any cases or mounts that you previously used for your GoPro will fit the new acquisition perfectly. One last thing deemed worthy of mention on the Hero4 is the addition of touch-screen display included in the Hero4 Silver model.

Performance of the GoPro Hero4

Considering the speed at which the new Hero4 can shoot at – of up to 120 frames per second on White and Silver, and 240 frames per second on the Black – slow motion recording is amazingly smooth. However, the top fps you can get will cost you on image quality, making you downgrade all the way down to 480p if amazing slow motion is what you are looking for.

Photo capturing modes also received a facelift, now including Single Shot Mode, Continuous – either as long as you hold your finger on the button or until 30 photos are taken at the frequency you want them to, Burst – shooting up to 30 photos inside a second, Time Lapse Mode, Night Photo and Night Lapse – same as regular Time Lapse except it takes on features that make lighting better in pictures shot at night.

For the Black and Silver models only, the GoPro Hero4 comes with a mobile app, allowing you to control the camera through your smartphone and upload or sync your data with your handheld device. This is all done through the new addition of WiFi to the Hero4, that will create a network for your phone to connect to.

After a few initial setup steps, you’ll be ready to go, the app settings giving you full control of how you want to shoot using your GoPro. Live streaming is also possible via the same mobile application.

Video Recording with the GoPro Hero 4

The Black model is the one that has come up with most upgrades in comparison to older models, being able to not only record 4K video at 30 frames per second, or alternatively 1080p in 120 frames per second and the intermediary option of 2.7K video at 50 frames per second. This is a considerable upgrade from the Hero3 that although had the 4K video capability, it could only record in 15 frames per second, forcing you to trade quality for motion clarity.

Another nifty feature that makes the video editing and revision post-recording a breeze is the highlight tag feature that allows you to mark a particular moment while shooting by the press of the WiFi button. This will make it easier for you to find the marked moment easier upon importing the video using the GoPro Studio software application afterwards.

As I mentioned earlier, the Silver model is the only of the Hero4 family that includes a touch screen. In previous GoPros, you could opt in to attach an LCD screen to the back of your device but it would definitely encumber the device and give it a clunky, burdened feel.

The Silver Hero4 however has this feature embedded into the camera itself, without taxing on size at all. Now, while you won’t be getting the 4k video at 30 fps feature, but at a 15 frames per second just like the Hero3, a lot of the pro features that you’d get on the Black version will be able to be found on the Silver as well.

Wrapping Up…

Between the Black and the Silver, the choice stays between truly professional video shooting and opting for the really useful touch screen which makes not only viewing possible while recording, but also gives the Hero4 easier controls via the display rather than having to operate the camera through the side buttons or the tiny LCD.

The White version of the Hero4 is not that long of a shot from the Hero3 / Hero3+. While you’ll probably be getting the most recording time done with it in comparison to the other two models, quality will not be as amazing. It only has a 5 megapixel zoom, unlike its 12 megapixel siblings. However, it will only cost you roughly $130, while the Silver and Black jump the $399 and $499 bars respectively.
